The requirements for pack flanking make it so that I could never see using it. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love them as the benefit this feat grants is amazing. This feat is obviously designed for the hunter. I know there are a handful of archetypes that would also qualify, but the fact that the only way it works is if you can grant a feat to an animal companion makes it pretty hunter focused. My problem then becomes that I could never see being able to build a hunter with an intelligence high enough to meet the prerequisite 13. I mostly play pathfinder society, but even when I dont, my GMs always base ability scores off of point buy. If I'm a melee oriented hunter, the only time I could see using this feat, I'm going to need a high strength to be effective, a high constitution to stay alive, and I may or may not throw a few points into dexterity to kep from getting hit to often. I need to have a decent wisdom if I want to be able to cast spells and I can't dump my charisma if I want to be able to handle my companion reliably at low levels. Really, the only stat I don't need is intelligence. Except for this one feat. This is the only reason. Does anyone else see this as a problem? Am I missing something or over exaggerating an issue? If anyone has any thoughts on this I could use the help.

I second this. I'm planning on building my first animal companion character for PFS and had hoped this forum would contain some helpful information I might have overlooked. It does not. A more appropriate title for this forum would be along the lines of "Are animal companions overpowered in PFS?"
BLUF:I just want to echo the confusion already expressed by others. I do see that the original post is marked as "Answered in the FAQ" but when I checked the FAQ: Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Combat section I found no reference to the feat. Has this actually been answered in the FAQ? If it has, could someone point out where? ********* I found this post because I, like many others, read the description of Boar Style and my first reaction was "Wow, that's amazing!" immediately followed by "there's no way that's how it's supposed to work..." I have read many of the suggestions given by other posters but I can't help but want an official ruling. Meaning no disrespect, if I just wanted a collaborative interpretation I would talk to my own GM. I want to know if the developers really did intend to give a 3rd level character access to 2d6 points of bleed damage because, all interpretations aside, that is what this feat appears to do as written.
So I'm playing a Shoanti barbarian for a Rise of the Runelords campaign and I am taking advantage of the Thunder and Fang feat from the Pathfinder Player Companion Varisia Birthblace of Legends. It reads
VBoL pg 10 wrote: Benefit:You can use an earth breaker as though it was a one-handed weapon. When using an earth breaker in one hand and a klar in your offhand, you retain the shield bonus your klar grants to your Armor Class even when you use it to attack. Treat your klar as a light weapon for the purposes of determining your two-weapon fighting penalty. My first question is, considering that Thunder and Fang provides the same benefit (and then some) as the Improved Shield Bash feat from the Player's Guide, should Thunder and Fang count for the prerequisite for Shield Slam or would I have to take Improved Shield Bash even though it would provide me no additional benefit? Secondly, when using Thunder and Fang, I would take a -2 penalty to attacks made with both the earth breaker and the klar. If I later take the Shield Mastery feat from the Player's Guide, would that alleviate the penalty on attacks with the earth breaker as well, or only the klar? Thirdly, if the Shield Mastery feat allows an enhancement bonus on a shield to apply to weapon attack and damage rolls, does that enhancement bonus count as the required weapon enhancement to give a weapon special properties? Thank you in advance and I apologize if any of this has already been answered somewhere else.
Okay, last question and then I should have a submission ready either tonight or early morning. I am looking at the Fiendish Vessel cleric for Tieflings presented in the Advance Race Guide. Both Fiendish Vessel and Diabolist eventually aquire an imp companion. FV treats the imp as a wizard's familiar. Diabolist treats the imp as a druid's animal companion. Thoughts? I was hoping that this could be resolved as a single imp with the benefits of both. Of course, this is not a problem unitl level...well not for awhile, so this is kind of a forward thinking problem.
Okay, I'm going to try for a semi-intelligent question this time. How do you feel about the Pathfinder Chronicles Book of the Damned: Princes of Darkness? I would like to create a cleric of Geryon (Lord of the Fifth Circle of Hell) who would be a devil summoner and work towards the Diabolist prestige class. I would also like to use Geryon's domains of Evil and Strength and eventually make use of some of the spells the book presents. I also wanted to make sure you were okay with the concept since I see that you do not want the class summoner in your campaign. I would also like to use the Blood of Fiends book to make a Tiefling and was wondering if you had any restrictions on doing so.

I'm going to be honest, I'm really hesitant to read the spoiler because I feel like it would make it harder for me to role-play Morgrym. He might know that scraps isn't evil, but that doesn't mean he's going to trust her just yet and he might continue to come off as an ass for a while yet. Even though, in all likliehood, he wouldn't have survived this without her. Just know that he has his reasons. Beyond simply, you know, the fact that goblins and dwarves have been at war since even before the Quest for Sky.
You seem to have issued a creative writing challenge in asking for plausible back-stories for fanciful characters. Well, since background writing is my favorite part of the character creation process you can consider your challenge accepted. Mr. Tassadan, please anticipate my submission Sunday evening as I will need Saturday to brainstorm.

So, I know that with the DM on vacation this isn't really that pertinent, but tomorrow the navy will send me to foreign shores for a yet unknown period of time. I'll check in as often as I can, but I don't know how much access I'll have yet. It's been a lot of fun playing with this group and I should be back by late october.

Well, I have two questions. The first is: would it not be reasonable to run with it for now and re-evaluate later if it becomes a problem? The second is: why wouldn't you want that to happen? It sounds awesome. Plus, it would have to have been a pretty rare occurrence, not only for a 9th level fighter to do that much damage three times in a single round, but for the DM to roll less than three on three Fort saves in a row. In the end, it's up to Nick and I don't want to push this if the rest of the party is against it. I just think the rule is pretty balanced and kind of fun. I just want to know if we are going to use it because an optional ability for me increases the DC for saves against massive damage I cause which is useless if we aren't going to use massive damage.

I don't think every attack would invoke the fort save. By the time we reach a level where either we or the enemy could consistently deal 50 damage, we would hopefully have more than 100 hit points. I haven't played a campaign that's made it past level 10 or so in a long time, but if it does become a problem we can always renegotiate it then, can't we?

"We wants it. We needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false!
That night, compelled to do something she wouldn't ordinarily do, Xenarchy kills her comrades in their sleep and takes back the precious.

Quick question, what is your rule for crossbows as far as keeping them loaded? Since loading them is a pain in the ass I've had some DM's who let you have the first shot for free and some DM's who point out the lack of safety of carrying around a loaded crossbow. Just wanted to get your opinion.

Well, I'm kind of hoping someone will recommend a plan so we can just get started. Roh-Kai's suggestions of a frontal assault may not be the best-advised plans, but he's also not very likely to change them so there's nothing for me to say. Roh-Kai can be the one to step up and lead the way, but he's already stated what he thinks the plan should be.

Another PBP GM i have rolls initiative for the party and for the bad guys. He posts the actions of all the bad guys in one big group and then gives the party 24 hours to post their actions in whatever order they can. If anyone misses the deadline, we all have pre-arranged actions like "I shoot the toughest bad guy" or "I heal the most injured party member". It allows combat to flow pretty smoothly and the whole group isn't stuck waiting for one person.
Male Human
You know, I've been playing this game for 8 years and I'm still waiting for the day when I will actually have a firm grasp on how everything works.

Cool map. So, as everyone has already pointed out the alignments are kind of all over the place. I hope no one takes it too personally that Roh-Kai is going to be kind of an ass until he feels that the non-combat members of the party have "proved themselves". If I do offend anyone, let me know and I'll tone it back. This is the first time I've had a character who comes from the deep end of the alignment pool so it's something I'll be perfecting as time goes on.
You get a warning first ;) Seriously, though, one of the requirements is that our character be able to play nice with others. I might not necessarily 'play nice' but the game wouldn't be much fun for either of us if I just tried to kill you in the first ten minutes. Then your back-story novelization would go to waste and that would tragic. I can be a sarcastic person. I swear it is all in good fun, but it doesn't always carry over well into the written word. I just want to say now that I never intend to offend anyone and if I do it was probably an accident.
@ umbral reaver: Actually, I was really looking forward to the role play between our characters. I don't want to ruin the opportunity to actually play it out, but I'm imagining a pretty rocky start before we get to the point of hate-buddies. I anticipate it being a lot of fun. @HarbinNick: In the description for the orc trait "smith apprentice" it says that a craft skill of the player's choice becomes a class skill. Would it be better for appraise to become a class skill since craft is naturally a class skill for every class?
Initial idea: Roh-Kai the Orc is a fighter who uses an Orc double axe and wears heavy armour when it is available. He was learning to be a fighter and a smith in his clan when a naive mistake was seen as an insult against the clan leader's honour. As was the custom of his clan, Roh-Kai had to face his leader in single combat. Although clearly outmatched, Roh-Kai fought and fought, sustaining a beating in the process that would have killed many of his clansmen. Impressed by his tenacity, clan wise woman ordered Roh-Kai's life spared, but he was still banished for his transgression. Today he wanders, selling his skill in battle for a place to sleep and seeking to further his skill in battle and at the forge. He hopes that if he is able to win honour for his clan and present the clan's leader with a weapon suitable for one of that station he may be able to rejoin his clan. Roh-Kai is lawful evil. He never breaks an oath and is not prone to wanton destruction as some might think. However, he considers non-orcs beneath him and would give as much thought to ending the life of a human as you or I would to a cockroach. He worships Battus and inscribes the War God's symbol into all of his works.
Have just finished reading your world description and am really excited for this. I have some better questions. Are you making Orcs a core race? It sounds like you are making some pretty big changes to the core race availabilities and the traits of those races you are keeping.

I had the same question about the front gates. I also agree that once a plan of action is decided upon we should hash out the details here. The only thing is that we are still not all on the same page about what our course of action should be. If we don't have that figured out by tonight, Gordom is going to recommend putting it to a vote (The two options seeming to be ambush them here or let them take the tax and follow them).

@robertness: When I was picking traits, I didn't know if there was any limit about both of them being campaign specific (I did look, I promise) but I just really liked them both and how I could fit them into a back story. Also, I was looking at the map supplied in the Player's companion. It does not have the Greenbelt marked as best as I could tell. However, if Oleg's is a trading and fur post, I figured that it would not be impossible for Gordom to already be familiar with it as most of his income to this point has come from trapping and hunting. In fact, Oleg's might have already been the next stop for Gordom after his claim to nobility was rejected by the court of Restov (and if you don't mind my inclusion of such details in my background, at some point Gordom is going to want his ring back...) I know that was a lot, but the main question was: is it feasible that Gordom already knows Oleg?

Thank you for picking my character. I have never played a PBP but have wanted to give one a try for years so this means a lot to me. Let me know if anything needs to be corrected and I look forwarded to getting started on Monday. Congratulations to everyone else who was selected. This looks to be a great group already.
My submission is a Human Ranger named Gordom. I have never played a PBP campaign before and was excited to see one specifically for beginners. --------------------
I am definitely down to be a part of this campaign. I will need a few days to fully flesh out a back-story/build a character but I was planning on making a human ranger with the bastard and pioneer campaign traits and making him specialize in mounted combat, particularly archery. I have a long experience with 3.5 but not much with pathfinder and none with pbp so I hope I can use this as an opportunity to learn about both. Thank you for the consideration and I should have a full character submission prepared before wednesday.
Not to make anyone think I'm OCD or anything, but I've been updating my browser every five minutes for the past two hours hoping someone else had posted here. I'm really hoping that this goes somewhere as I've been looking into the Kingmaker campaign and it seems pretty interesting, but I still have a ton of questions and don't want to get left behind in my confusion.

I know you said more will follow in the recruitment thread but I was wondering how fleshed out of characters you would want us to have and how much information would you want? Do you want us to create a full character and then send you a scan of the character sheet? DO you have guidelines on what source material/stat generation rules/ etc you would want us to use? Like I said, I've never done this before but am really excited. I just don't want to screw it up right from the beginning.
I'm in the Navy and moving changing residency every couple years makes it hard to find a long-term campaign. I have always been interested in the idea of participating in a PBP game but have never really been able to find a way to do so. That said, if you create a Pathfinder PBP game I am definitely interested. |
