Backstory Council of Thieves AP:

Kara was born and raised in the ruins now known as Rego Cader the daughter of an escaped slave brought into Westcrown from Nidal several years earlier.

Kara’s mother, Tiara was a slave bought and sold through several houses, her small stature tended to make her less than desirable. When she was with child she became even more of a burden to any master she would belong to.

Finally while nearing full term Tiara was to be put to death she was rescued and brought into the dark shadows of the underworld of Westcrown. A small group of gnomes living in the sewers of Rego Cader who called themselves the Shadow Avengers determined to one day restore freedom to Westcrown. It was here that Kara was born.

Kara was raised among the shadow gnomes of Westcrown’s dead sector studying, experimenting and learning the arts of shadow magic. Kara learned the ways of this part of Westcrown. Learning how to find the Dusk market when she needed to; Learning what parts to avoid and what parts were safe. Kara always had a knack for languages and found it to her advantage quickly learning the various dialects of the city to interpret plans of those that would bring ruin to her family.

Kara’s magical talent far exceeded others of her age some claimed that her Nidal blood was the reason, yet others believed that she was touched by ancient powers. But truth be told, Kara’s mother was a student of the ancient rune magic of the Thassilonians. And it was Tiara that taught Kara all that she had learned as a child.

One evening before the curfew Kara was hiding in an ally following some strangers that she had never seen before. She heard their conversation about a meeting of others that had the same ideals as her.

Kara returned to the Shadow Avengers safe house in the sewers to inform them of this discovery. Tiara told her that it was time for Kara to go and discover on her own. She had learned all she could from those here. Kara’s first mission as a Shadow Avenger is to find out about these people and represent the shadow gnomes of Westcrown.

Backstory Crypt of the Everflame:

I was born and raised in the little community of Whistledown. I was always the outcast my entire childhood with my plain black hair, not the orange and greens nor reds of the other gnomes. As a result, I tended to spend much of my time alone growing up, dreaming of the day I would get the chance to go explore the big world beyond.

It was my 40th birthday and my whole family had planned a big celebration but that is when it all happened. Townsfolk go missing, strange happenings at night. It was on my birthday proper that everyone was ordered inside by the mayor and the town militia was to take up guard posts to put an end to the strange happenings.

Their blood curdling screams woke the town in the dead of night, and after the sun came up only the bravest of the townsfolk ventured out to investigate—(I stayed in my room) -- they found only scattered weapons, dented helmets, and pools of congealed blood.

The next day, a group of Pathfinders cane to town. Mayor Bagalom managed to persuade the adventurers to take care of the problem for the town. Many of us were excited to have people of such prominence in town even though they were from so place called Sothis or some such place and I think they were looking for some dead prostitute. I know, weird huh?

Any way I was watching them going about their business in town, you know shopping, asking questions etc. That’s when I saw him, he was a gnome like me, he even had black hair, and the cutest smile, and the blues eyes.

From that point on I made it a point to learn about him, so I followed the group about the town hiding behind building corners and horse troughs, You girls know what I’m talking about. Anyway I think he saw me right away but he played it all cool, pretending he didn’t notice but I know he noticed but he didn’t know that I knew that he saw me.

I wasn’t long that the adventurers decided to plan their next move while staying in the local tavern. That is when I would make my move. I used some of my magic to look like a bar girl and tried to get close to him. Of course he noticed and tried to accuse me of spying. I broke down and told them everything I did and why. And that boy, all he could do was laugh an laugh, like I wasn’t good enough or something. Boy I got so mad; I never knew I had it in me, it seemed as though the shadows were mine to command and I managed to entangle that boy with his own shadow.

He smiled at me “you have the gift, I knew it the moment I saw you, there are but a few of us that have such talent. I knew you had it from your black hair, it’s our marking.”

Now I was really confused, what the heck was he talking about? I released him but somehow I knew he could have escaped on his own. “After I return from this mission I will explain it all to you, By the way my name is Bink Guidersleeves the third, Shadowmage of the 5th order.

Well Bink and all of his companions succeeded in stopping whatever it was that plagued Whistledown. And there was a great festival in their honor. (Though the fact that they were carting around a 400-year-old corpse of an Osirian concubine was a tad unsettling for most of us). But hey Bink was there and he is so awesome.

Bink sat me down and told me all about what made me so special. He said sometimes, every so often a gnome is born with black hair and the ability to see in the dark better than the rest of the gnomes. We are what’s called Shadowborn, and we are born on the night of the full moon, we are blessed with an affinity toward the shadow world. “You have the markings and the talent, not to mention you are kinda cute.”

Bink took me as an apprentice and I was to travel with him while he would show me the arts of shadow magic.

“What makes us unique as opposed to all the other wizards?” I asked.

“Well Kara we work closely with various underworld organizations to help protect the gnome society from dangerous influences. Sivanah has gifted some of us gnomes to serve in that purpose. I have been marked and so have you. Our talents are to be used to get inside the places others cannot go, and work in the shadows to protect those that cannot protect themselves. We do not seek glory, nor do we relish in it.”

“But why not, If we protect them shouldn’t we get the credit?” I asked

“I’m sorry Kara, that is not our way, when that little child smiles knowing that he is safe from harm that is all the reward you need to seek.” Bink told me

“What of the Paladins, aren’t they the same thing?” I asked

“I’m afraid not while they have similar ideals many times our methods are in conflict with theirs” He said.

Well after several week of travel with Bink We became very close. I really liked him and he liked me. He showed me all about the shadow magic, and I watched him slip in and out of the shadows mission after mission never claiming the glory, never claiming rewards.

We journeyed our way through the Bloodsworn Vale and into the city of Skelt. It was there that Bink told me it was time to depart. He made arrangements for me to be enrolled in the Academy of Arcane Sciences there.

“You can find me in Greengold if you want to find me again. Once you graduate from this school, you will be ready to assume my roll as protector of this region. Guard it well” and with that Bink left.

I completed my education at the Academy despite being the only gnome there. Nobody believed me about the shadow world or the shadow mages; I was starting to doubt everything.

I had to find Bink in Greengold. Was he lying to me? What do I do now? I bought passage on a river barge to head toward Vellumas in Lastwall. There I will find passage to Greengold and find Bink.

The barge first was to make a stop in Kassen to re-supply. “Might as well see the sights while here” I thought to myself.

I was no more than 5 minutes leaving the boat when a kid approached me with a message. “Are you the black haired gnome from Varisia?” he asked. I couldn’t help but look at him like he was some sort of idiot considering I am the only gnome that I am aware of in these parts and it was pretty obvious as to the color of my hair; but I thought better than to ridicule the poor boy there was something about him, I just couldn’t put my finger on it.

The boy handed me the message and it was sealed by Bink’s mark. “Now how in the nine hells did he know to find me here?” I opened the note just after the boy turned to leave after a quick glance I looked up and the boy was gone. “Strange” I pondered to myself.

My dear friend Kara, by now you should have completed all of your training and you are well on your way the last task you must complete lies here in Kassen. You will pose as girl needing to complete her rite of passage to adulthood. I have made some arrangements. The boy that delivered this to you, his name is Kaleb, if asked he is your older brother. Don’t worry, He is known in the town and will confirm the claim. He does not live in the town but is a resident of a small farm about 3 miles from the town. Go there and learn all that you can and complete the rite.

I made my way to the farm as was explained in the letter. And there I found that there were several other gnomes like myself, all with the same black hair. Most were no more than 20 or 30 years of age. I soon found the boy that delivered the note.

“how did you know to find me here?” I asked.

“My dear Kara,” he responded, “I have been watching you following you all through your time at the academy. And I must say I am impressed at your progress.” He responded and soon the magic alterations around faded. It was Bink.

I threw my arms around him; so excited to see him again, and then I slapped him. “That was for not telling me, and letting me be ridiculed and teased my entire time there!”

My emotions were mixed but how could any girl resist those eyes and I soon forgave him.

Bink explained the situation “All of these gnomes here will one day be a part of the shadowcaster’s world. I am their teacher. I was inspired by you Kara. But for us to be accepted in this community we need to participate in the rite of passage. Many see it as a passage to adulthood, but for us, a passage to a new world for our kind.”

I knew what I needed to do….

I didn’t go into much detail about what to do in the city since I am not sure how you plan to tie the adventure to the party at the city.
