Kalindrah: "Umm... this way," says Kalindrah. She heads out of the shop, angling for the better-lit main streets. "Not sure what's going on, but who can say with magicians and things out there, right?" She attempts an easygoing chuckle but it comes off more nervous.
Kalindrah: The sudden drop in light levels is generally a harbinger of bad things, and Kalindrah says, "Huh. That's not the kind of illumination to which I usually refer. Should we step outside?"
Kalindrah: "Vellum is an order of magnitude pricier: silver instead of copper. Both are a form of treated animal skin, usually sheepskin or calfskin, but vellum is finer textured, has a semitranslucent look in good light. Vellum is also more fragile. This means it's seen as a sort of 'prestige' material. If you want to impress someone with the price, that's the material to use. If that doesn't matter as much, then parchment or paper will do. In either case the illumination detail can carry a lot of the work of making it presentable, though the whole package benefits from materials: Adding a ribbon or wax seal, perfuming the letter, and so on."
"What sort of budget are you looking at? I can provide some options to fit your pricing."
Kalindrah: "Well, I can try to work with your budget. There are several factors that influence price: the material, the ink, the penmanship... also for really fancy works you'll want the paper perfumed, rolled, and sealed with wax. In this weather you likely want vellum instead of parchment, because it doesn't wrinkle as much."
Kalindrah goes over a few options, doing her best to try to figure out exactly what kind of copy would work best within the prospective client's budget.
Kalindrah: "Ah... yes, yes, I do illuminations," says Kalindrah. "Also copying, accounts, calligraphy, and general scribing. Did you have a specific task in mind?"
Kalindrah: Kalindrah pauses and rubs her eyes. Copying ledgers is tedious, finicky work. Nothing like truly expressing oneself with illumination...
The heat of Westcrown doesn't bother the tiefling, thanks to her fiendish heritage , but the muggy humidity always annoys her. Makes her hair frizzy and makes it harder to write on the page without leaving streaks. She carefully puts her quill down after wiping the ink from it and, one hand on her belt-dagger, slides out of her seat to investigate the sound of the opening door. "Hello? Is someone there?" Being that she's at her day job she's not in armor; what kind of scribe wears armor? Instead she's in her bulky jacket (completely inappropriate to the weather, but it's not like she's going to overheat).
I hadn't thought of that. Any recommendations that make sense for her? Faithe probably lives and works in the Rego Sacera, the priest quarter, as a sexton for a shrine of Pharasma, where she oversees offerings and the graveyard.
Kalindrah works in the Parego Spera, in the Rego Pena, the merchants' district. Her day job is usually copying documents and accounts for merchants, though her true joy is in making beautiful books and illuminations.
