Julius has attempted to initiate strategic discussion and sadly failed. Now he is tipsy from doing a shot of who knows what. So don't count on any planning tips from him. That's not his specialty area of knowledge or experience.

If you want to leave and go back to the Temple of Nethys, then he will have plenty more to say. :P

She replies to Sarala's query, with an unlucky glitch to her plan.

"Also I could sow thoughts in door guard - get him to let us upto 3rd floor...."

Oddly, this is the explanation you are looking for which is right before your question. I think, though, if you're expecting a semi-tribal character like Ruika to explain in more expansive and modern terms, you are bound for disappointment. If you think Thurrios needs more than a simple description of the magic, I'm more than happy to have Julius intervene and get more arcanely technical.

No updates?...what?

That's a very confusing comment. We're posting and have been talking about our plan now that we are inside and learning about how everything works in the Battle Market.

What update are you needing/waiting for before you join into the discussion?

The pleasant feeling seems to grow and Julius feels warmer.

"Social niceties? What?" Julius asks evidently flabbergasted.

Before he can respond further, Ruika lays out her options and Haleen throws in her two cents. Julius feels much better about her as she's not immediately calling for the guards to kill them and prevent their questionable designs for the future of Battle Market's current operator. He grins at Haleen and then suddenly remembers he was going to say something.

"Soshul nyessseties? Wha—?" he repeats a tad less intelligible this time.

"I thought thish would be the time for marshel acshun. Not nyessseties." Julius blinks and looks at Anapa, Thurrios, and Narkû in turn. "Doncha you free live for that?" The arcanists waves his hand broadly in the direction of the gore soaked arena once again displaying a naivety of those whose careers do not align with his own.

Julius spits beer foam as Ruika casually suggests attempting an assassination in full view of the arena during presentation. He wipes excess off of his mouth and nods along as Haleen encourages Ruika to keep her voice down.

He can't help but groan then when instead of instilling appropriate wariness, Haleen's words incite the orc(?) to a loud display of...racial pride? Julius is a tad uncertain about it. From what he's managed to see of Ruika's features under veil, she definitely seemed surprisingly more attractive than the few orcs and half-orcs he had seen in his travels so far. But who knew? Before meeting Sarala, he had never seen or even heard of a vanara, and his own reaction had been less than enlightened at the time.

"Calm down, Miss White Orc!" he hisses. "Just sit and sip your beer while we figure this out."

Assuming that Thurrios is present, Julius looks to him. "I don't imagine there is any reason to force her ladyship to be included in our ill-advised plans of increasingly evident foolishness." He takes the last gulp of his beer an manages to swallow it without choking or sputtering. He was starting to feel a warm tingle. "So Sir Furious...how are we doing this?"

Haleen wrote:
"...But if Kardswann or Ugruk or Undrella catch wind of you, well, you might be in for a bad time." With a smirk, Haleen eyes Julius pointedly. "Well, since you've found me, I hope your quest was worthwhile."

Julius chokes slightly on the sip of his beer he was trying to take as Haleen's eyes drill into him. He flushes and finds his thoughts scattering as the mature woman seems to be focusing her attention on him. The lies he wanted to tell to assure they seemed like nothing but Narkû's quest companions just didn't quite seem to be making sense in his head. Pretty women always seemed to muddle his thoughts so much.

"Uh...I suppose it is...worth it...?" Julius says unsurely. He glances nervously at Narkû for support.

He clears his throat and asks quietly, "So...what exactly happens when someone is addressed by Kardswann? Just so we understand what we may need to...er, say." Julius waves a hand. "In order to fit in with the regulars who frequent the arena area."

Julius shuts his eyes while his mouth compresses into a thin line. With a slight shake of his head, he mutters, "It's like he doesn't know how to not say things that draw attention to us."

The shot of whatever moonshine the gnoll had given them burned and sucked all the air out of Julius' lungs. He quickly took a gulp of the chaser beer but the quick transition had him sputtering and coughing soon after.

"Erk," he managed in reply to Haleen's encouragement not to belong. Uncertain how she would take their mission, Julius politicks instead.

"The ever verbose cavalier here," he stops to cough again, "convinced us his quest for his friend was worthwhile. So here we are."

He trails off as Haleen greets Narkû with such familiarity. Then suddenly he's swept up nearly off his feet as Anapa and Narkû follow Haleen to the bar.

Suddenly he has a potent spirit in a small cup in his left hand and a tankard with a warm, heavy brew smelling strongly of hops in his right.

"A toast!" Haleen announces.

It's a mystery, Thurrios, especially since you, Narkû, Ruika, and Sarala are all on the second floor unless I'm mistaken. Anapa and Julius are at ground level as they did not ascend the stairs. So how Narkû got here at all to follow Julius is an enigma! :P

As Anapa's patience with Julius' useless banter finally reaches its limit, the paladin rolls his eyes and strides through the door.

"Fine," he says throwing up his hands. He stows his equipped items so he doesn't look suspiciously like the danger they actually were. He walks in looking around and is so distracted by all the activity and dangerous looking folks Julius walks into a wall! The wall is shaped exactly like an Ifrit paladin coincidentally enough.

Julius squints at the doorway and the stairs as the roar of the crowd gets louder for the gladiatorial fight currently underway.

Frowning, he glances at the Ifrit. "I imagine the buyers for the musket slives Narkû was going on about are seeing their product for the first time. Such cheering!" he quips.

Julius considers Thurrios' point. He gives a concession frown waggling his head back and forth.

"Actually...peryton does sound like a Varisian township when one considers the local dialect and naming conventions of the area around Magnimar..."

Julius pauses, but then suddenly snaps his fingers with wide eyes.

"Oh! That's right! Your future bride Undrella mentioned something about the peryton, she just didn't call it a peryton."

”The more dangerous of the two is Kezurkian, a demon conjured up by one of the Carrion King’s priests. In the absence of the gnoll patrols, he stalks the streets, hunting down interlopers… you are fortunate indeed to have not become acquainted already.”

From this post.

"Given that we already took of care the goat-demon, I'm betting the 'winged creature' is surely the peryton we just witnessed circling."

Julius raises a finger taking a teacher's pose once more.

"Also, I forgot to mention, the peryton's most dangerous weapons are their incredibly sharp antlers, which often inflict grievous wounds during battles with them. Sometimes when peryton kill humanoid prey, they have been known to immediately tear into the victim's chest cavity and devour the heart. The display is said to be quite horrific to behold. Personally, I'd hate to witness that happening to any of you."

Julius looks at Felliped sadly not realizing how such a direct gaze following these words may appear to the nervous survivor.

Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

After he really thinks about it for a moment, Julius blurts out, "The creature you're describing sounds like a peryton."

At Thurrios' blank expression, Julius explains further, slowly.

"A peryton is a bloodthirsty creature that revels in consuming the hearts of any creature weaker than it…especially those of humanoids. Bleh!" Julius makes a face, but continues the patronizing lesson on arcane animals. "Like many magical beasts, the peryton is as intelligent as any man despite being such a vicious fiend."

At this point the arcanist sighs and waves a weary, long-suffering hand. "Carry on then. Make plans to kill it. If it's really a peryton, there's absolutely nothing good that can come of it shadowing our steps. If we are to once again head to Kelmarane or the Temple of Nethys, it just won't do to have this flying beacon betraying our presence every step of the way."

Once Sarala insists on the bird being a wolf-in-bird-clothing, Julius exaggeratedly catches the finger telescope and pantomimes twirling it around his fingers as Sarala does with the real shuriken.

"Alright, sure, you are seeing a wolf-bird. Well, let's assume that at this distance it can see us well. Most birds can see very well at height, so a wolf-bird surely wouldn't be any different. So for the moment, it's not attacking us, but you all think that attacking it is the best plan." Julius looks around at everyone with a wry expression. "Has everyone forgotten wolves travel in packs? If we're all staring at the non-aggressive one which is keeping our attention, where are the rest of the wolves, and what are they up to?"

Julius raises a finger suddenly. "Oh! Wolf-birds. Excuse me."

"If you have any way of securing Haidar against any chance to cast spells, I would recommend it. We did find him in a Temple of Nethys among much magical energy, so I can only imagine he has some knowledge of the arcane."

With that he returns to his food and conversations with Sarala and Ruika, pausing only as Sarala seeks out the healer to chat.

I would just like to clarify Thurrios in character statement then. If you meant to indicate that he's saying his role within the religion has no special focus on the Healing side of the faith, then Julius will be able to gloss over it.

If, however, this is a statement indicating Thurrios'
personal view of Sarenrae, then his statement is borderline heretical, and Julius would be more likely to begin a theological discussion about it. :-)

"Hey, hey now!" comes the concerned cry from Julius when executing Haidar is brought up. "You can't be seriously suggesting killing what amounts to an innocent man! Er, werecat, leopard man..." Julius rolls his hand as if that will assist the stumbling for words he is experiencing. "Whatever we want to call him though Haidar works well enough and leaves out the confusion, I suppose."

Julius eyes shift to the sand to contemplate the wereleopard as he momentarily considers the correct vocabulary. He shakes himself and returns to Haidar's defense earnestly.

"Hey! That's not important! The lycanthropic shift generally is only triggered some of the time. I'm pretty sure that he was only able to make this change because of some magic within the Temple. As long as some care is taken around then full moon to restrain him in a stout and sturdy cage, Haidar's knowledge of this area and the Temple will be invaluable."

Julius begins to beam as he mentions the Temple of Nethys. "If this rather unmagey mage is able to use the magics there to cause his transformation, I'm certain I will be able to solve the riddle of it. Maybe we could even find an answer to restoring him from it! Just think of it!"

Julius eyes are alight with future glory and amazing impossible magic.

"Finding the solution to lycanthropy! We would be hailed as heroes! Being able to control it—turning it on and off at whim! Think of the applications! Think of respect and access to powerful tomes...! I would be renowned as one of the greatest wizards ever..."

Julius is long gone at this point. He sees nothing but himself casting spells to change his cadre of warriors into wereanimals to destroy the evil hordes that exist to prevent his access to the world's mystical secrets.

Julius shows far less concern for Haidar than the others. Having already determined the man is afflicted with lycanthropy, Julius is satisfied by knowing he is no longer in danger of death and does not pay Haidar's current unconsciousness any mind. Instead, he spends much of the return trip in reverie and making occasional notes in his journal about the Temple of Nethys. Julius does express what can only be called disappointment that Haidar had not shown any evidence of magical aptitude or inclination to use magic during the prior conflict. The arcanist seems to have had high hopes for a man trying to maintain exclusive possession of a complex dedicated to the All-Seeing Eye.

Upon arriving at the camp, Julius allows the others to fuss over those injured by the wereleopard and the lycanthrope himself. He chooses to take this time to examine each of the items they had encountered.

His mind still seems to be affected by the Breath of Nethys while not having succumbed to its more torporific effects, the heavy magic must have overloaded his senses for the time being. Sighing, Julius thanks Thurrios and Ruika on their insights for the items they were able to identify.

Approaching Sarala, Julius nods to his friend tiredly, his blackened eye not as obvious in the longer shadows of the darkening sky.

"Oi, Sarala. Let's get some grub. This lot can handle their own," he says referring to the injured and afflicted.

Glancing over to the "white orc" and her lovely Lyssa, Julius gestures for the pair to join their meal. "Would you like to discuss magic, Lady Ruika?"

If she joins them, Julius will begin to make near endless conversation about magic and ask Ruika about her powers and how they work.

As the wave of positive energy washes over him, Julius probably broken nose reverses into a more healthy form. The swelling of his now-shut eye goes down and the bruising settles into the ugly yellow-black of mostly healed. Touching the puffy area, he winces but seems less pained.

"Did I hear someone is doing the one job I can do without failing?" Julius demands playfully. "I can examine the artifacts and other magics in this temple. In fact I am glad to do so."

When Sarala announces her intentions and recommends getting people out of the Breath of Nethys, Julius reluctantly agrees. "This mist can be unsettling for many. We should move those affected as soon as possible."

As Sarala approaches him regarding the hard knock from earlier, Julius shrugs. "I know I was getting a little carried away with my talking." Rubbing his eye, he says to her, "Maybe next time, a 'Shut up, Julius' would be enough."

He winks at her with a grin and playfully punches her arm.

As they begin to move people and get ready to bring the other group back to the base camp, Julius eyes the marvels of the temple sadly. Looking at the clawed doors, Julius glances at the unconscious Haidar. "I guess we solved this riddle. I really do need more time with this place though..."

"Haidar is clearly lycanthropic! Try not to get wounded, everyone!" Julius shouts. "He may try to pounce so he can rake you with his claws."

"Haidar, I don't know if you can still understand me, but this is not the way magic is supposed to be treated. Com back to your senses!"

Dropping the javelin, Julius summons power from the aether around him. His own inner power amplifies the spell even further. A jagged ball of ice forms in his hand, and he winds up to throw it at the lycanthrope on the barque.

Julius will expend 1 point of his arcane reservoir.

Julius turns his head and frowns as Sarala suddenly moves towards him with a strange look in her eye. Haidar's response to him had been very unexpected and directed at Ruika and Sarala rather than him.

Sarala's slightly furry head makes hard contact with the bridge of the arcanist's nose, and the world explodes in a sea of stars and bright light. Julius can feel blood gushing from his nose, and the deep red liquid splatters across Sarala's light-colored fur.

"Ooooowwww!!!" he bellows, clutching the the bridge of his nose and the right eye socket. "Ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow...OW!!!"

Sarala wrote:
"Snakes about you and in us! Us Julius way we were. So were our cucumbers, something, guys," is what the Vanara says to justify this action. "Boring bottomless buddy."

"Alight! You don't like snakes. Some look like cucumbers, I can agree with that."

Looking down, Julius checks to make sure he's wearing pants. He was pretty certain...phew, he was!

"That was pretty mean, Sarala. I'm sorry if I have been boring you. I guess I have been letting this place go to my head." Julius pouts. He looks at his friend with a wounded expression partially obscured by his hand covering the hurt area.

Julius looks up at Haidar. "Haidar, this place isn't really a good place to talk. I'm certain you realize the Breath of Nephys is not easily understood by those who focus their faith and studies elsewhere. I think maybe we should go out to the temple area to discuss what is to be done here."

Julius' hand lowers slightly and a confused look crosses his face as he notices the damage Thurrios' acid has done to Haidar's clothes and skin. "Haidar...have you been attacked?"

Looking around and seeing most everyone with weapons drawn and Narkû throwing rope around the barque's bow, Julius becomes horrified.

"Wait! What is happening here??

Julius was unaware of "combat" until now, so this is the end of his round 1 actions.

Many things swirl in Julius' mind at this time.

  • His admiration of the artwork thinks, What about those frescoes? I really need to get those sketched.

  • The spells on the pillars! I must write down those spells! his desire for more magic knowledge bellows.

  • The Breath of Nethys! The future could be ours to see! What visions will the All-Seeing Eye bestow? yearns Julius' expectation of future greatness.

  • Is that Haidar on the ruin of the imitation Barque of Nethys? Julius' curiosity chimes into the mess of thought. What on Golarion is Haidar doing up there?

As is well known among Pathfinders and other scholars, it is the voice of curiosity which most often wins the day, and today is no exception.

Julius moves forward between Ruika and Sarala, and out of his mouth pours the words,

"What on Golarion is Haidar doing up there?"

Not realizing the danger that may be before them, Julius cocks his head and looks up at Haidar, "Why wouldn't you want help? You hurried us off and ran away...but this!" Julius raises outstretched arms, wand of summon monster i in one hand and a javelin in the other. "This place...these artifacts....these magics! We can all benefit. We can all help to make this laboratory great again!"

Julius eyes shine as visions of doing powerful magical research dance through his head. But suddenly, he blinks noticing Haidar's hostile stance.

"Why do you raise a sword?" Julius asks surprised. "Must we fight over the wonderful magic of Nethys?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Julius failed to realize the weapons in his own hands before speaking, sadly.

I knew I should have taken Julius down the counterspell route! Oh, Hindsight, you cruel, cruel devil.

Julius opens his mouth to say something, but Thurrios beats him to the punch.

"All magic is special, but as ineloquent as Thurrios the Furious may have been...his statement is more or less accurate," Julius ends with a sigh.

He eyes the mist curiously as the magic of ages seems to swirl around in it. He has the nagging feeling there's something about it he should remember. The memory just kept slipping away.

"Ah well...I doubt it is very dangerous, or I would be certain to..." the scholarly arcanist's voice trails off with a slight frown.

Shrugging he increases his pace to keep up with the others.

Julius finds himself examining the altar close to where he had stopped to retrieve the thrown javelin.

"Hmm?" is the impressive and educated response he makes to Ruika's cajoling. With a disgruntled huff, the arcanist moves to follow along with the others.

Realizing Thurrios actually said something that may have been a joke, Julius feels like he should say something clever...but his thoughts seem to be whirling in too many directions at once, and any witty rejoinder he may have conjured fades before he can utter it.

His attention becomes wholly the newly opened cave/tomb opening.

"Well, now," he murmurs. "What might this be?"

A glowing mist begins to coalesce into a form before Julius. A canine shedding holy light appears.

Celestial dog

The holy animal growls and runs toward the asp at Julius directing point.

Forty feet of movement will put it into flanking with Sarala.

The dog lunges at the asp attempting bite the large snake and shake it hard to snap its neck. Holy fire pours from its open jaws.

"Shoot! I don't think I have a Nethysian mask with me," Julius says blushing as if the realization is supremely embarrassing.

"The magic triggered by the altar's defense should end in a short while," he calls to his comrades. "But in the meantime..."

Julius mutters some arcane words and his wand of summon monster i begins to glow.

Pretty sure the summon finishes on my next turn, so Julius' action is now complete.

Not to be outdone by the white orc witch, Julius has a swirl of dancing lights over his head as he strides after Ruika. Javelin and wand held mostly limp as he boggles at the artistry in the room. Of course, he hasn't completely forgotten where he is and immediately begins casting detect magic over the frescos, pillars, lamps, and even the shadows swirling overhead.

Tucking one wand under his arm, the arcanist reequips the other and mutters some words as a bubble emerges from its tip to then settle around Sarala after which it shrinks to enclose her like a second skin.

Gesturing to the hallway with the clawed doors, Julius winks at Thurrios and asks, "While we're still mostly hale and have resources to spare, maybe we should be inquisitive about the nature of what wanted in so badly, eh?"

Tucking the mage armor wand back in its place, Julius shrugs.

"Better than going down a different passage and having it come from behind...though perhaps if anyone has any bit of tracking skills, they should take a gander at which hall has seen more activity lately."

Julius edges closer to the clawed door hallway, his wand of summon monster i held out before him like a shield and his javelin arm pulled back ready to throw.

Julius examined them using detect magic and his eyes only. Julius knows better than to touch when examining magical things. However, if proximity is a factor, I would say, Julius would come up closer to them than say the center of the room. Probably still give them a decent distance say 3-5 feet away at worst. And that's assuming no obvious magical energy suddenly begins building while he magically detects on them.

Some meta discussion has erupted regarding your description of the room, Mahorfeus. Regarding the four "figures," you only explicitly state one of them is a statue. Given I've described Julius as avidly examining all of them close up, is there any chance one of the "figures" is actually not made of stone or other common statue-like material? Such as a figure capable of clawing up a door?

Julius frowns at Ruika's words.

"Claw marks...?" Julius' attention now switches to the doors Ruika has pointed out. His eyes widen in surprise.

"Uh...well," he says lamely. "My guess about this being a dangerous research section may not be very far off the mark, I'm thinking."

Julius draws his mage armor wand again and reapplies the spell seeing as he is uncertain of the time that has passed. Once complete, he puts it away and draws the wand of summon monster i in his off-hand and a javelin in the other.

A much more wary expression rather than an investigative one is now firmly in place on the human's face.

You know, when I first decided to create a Nethys-worshiping vanilla Arcanist, I never expected there to be a Nethys based temple in this AP! I actually looked up the name of the temple on the pathfinder wikia just to know if this was actually in Howl of the Carrion King or is some kind of extra Mahorfeus added. Kind of crazy the chances!

I hope Julius' inane arcano-talk doesn't turn you guys off. I can't really imagine him not acting and talking this way here in the belly of what you could say is his pride and joy dream come true all at once.

Anyway, enjoy your trip, Thurrios!
