It likes heat, hit it with cold. Alchemical ice? Some powerfull spell effects can cause cold. Or maybe a large cart of black powder and metal pieces. That would do a lot of damage...heat though, scrap that. John looks at Tarkin

You said you attacked its heart. Exactly what happened there? Was it an actual heart? How did you harm it? How did the orcs deal with it? If it was a nuisance not a threat to them, that implies they could drive it off.

Ok you want a plan.
find how the orcs dealt with it when it was a nuisance, not a city eater.
Use that information to classify it, determine likely weaknesses.
Act on that information.
yes this plan is vague but we are in an information gathering phase.

You plan seems to be make the gas and hope it works. What if it is immune? That is not risky, that is reckless.
mustard gas is dangerous to make and use. And yes you can make it by hand, but only small quantities.

Mustard gas? You want to use mustard gas? Isn't that a bit twentieth century? Also wouldn't you need a knowledge roll to know the formula?
On a practical note, that stuff is rather dangerous. To us. Deploying it in the past was by artillery or bomb, neither of which we have. Hand deployment would hazardous.
It also takes time to produce in useful quantities, a week or so. And thats assuming we gave the production facilities. At a small alchemy lab much longer.
Sorry if I sound critical, this took me by surprise. DM's decision of course.

Like any story, a role play adventure needs a plot line of sorts, and needs to progress along that plot line. The game master should have an end goal in mind, leaving clues and indications to that goal.
Now we, as the party are moving to take out the beastie, and we don't know what follows, and that's good. Hopefully you do. Obviously you have to be flexible, not locked in stone.

party goals are, I think, kill the beastie, rescue baldwin and the other orcs (if possible). Then resolve our issues with hawcroft.

personal goals for my character is to sort out the guilty from the innocent and lay down justice. He would like to find out about the thing in the night market.

As a personal note, the game is going well I think.

John looked at olwyn, and jack, and the artic gleam shone cold, causing olwyn to flinch. Jack was made of sterner stuff, but he feels the gaze.

those who sacrifice themselves for their fellows are blessed, but these did not sacrifice themselves. They. Were. Sacrificed. They were fooled into a doomed attack, a cover for this brave soul the sarcasm is clear and his confederates to enact their plan.

John voice drops as he speaks what of their souls. Were they devoured, betrayed by those they trusted. Or do they linger, trapped.

John visibly calms himself. But this will not be determined now. We have a job. To save this city. This other will be decided later.

Balance I have no problems with, as justice is symbolized by scales, but punishing those who had no guilt to assuage your fear...That is the most blatant injustice. We are going to save your city now. And we will take our companions with us. John looks at the politician closely.

rick, I'm not certain what you are doing, but I think I'll be at the gibbet, before you sneak round the back and do what you want. John has no idea what you mean to do.

is this the way justice is administered in this city. By mob and panic. Surely you are better than this. Was there a fair and open trial. Clear evidence. I think not. One day ago I saw these men free, so if there was a trial it was very short. Do not put this stain on yourself and your home. I know for a fact that those two orcs are no more perpetrators of this act than you. Victims of it, yes. But culpable, no. And these other two are your best hope to solve this problem. Let us reason this out, as reasonable people. Otherwise things may grow...tense.

myself, jack and roger draw attention, and we see what happens. Defensive casting advised, this could go pear shaped really fast. But I'm hoping to roleplay a solution. If you have any party buffs, nows the time to use it.

John casts a spell quickly ( shield of faith) and then pulls out his pistol and fires it into the air.
Stop this travesty of justice now. John quickly reloads as he moves forward, surveying the opposition. His torc activates a shield spell as he does so. As he does this he casts weapon of awe on his weapon. His eyes glint with artic cold fury as he does so.

You know, I have always thought you should have to pass a test to be a parent. Apart from the physical requirements. I have met too many bad parents. I mean you have too to be a teacher (lots of tests and assignments and people standing judgment over you).

For the first time in a while, john prayed to the god he represented. His belief slipped from time to time, justice and law were more his balwick, but he respected his god as the author of those. He waited until he was alone to do this.

Abador, Lord of law and civilisation, hear me. This city, perhaps the world stands on the daggers edge. Aid us this day, so we have days there after.

He dressed himself, loaded and holstered justice his pistol, sheaved law his mace and doned faith his armor. John's faith was a real thing to him, grounded in the items he owned and his view of the world. Lastly, him put on the golden torc. perhaps I'll name you prudence. Appropriate I guess

Then pack over his shoulder, he went to breakfast.

John thinks a moment and then says

I think that plane was alive. We had been swallowed into a...stomach? A reflection? The beasties were real, and dangerous. Their weak point was their head, their central head. When I shot that it hurt it.

John refills his glass and reflects on the experience. I saw another me get ripped to pieces, and it hurt me. The beasties were like...antibodies destroying bacteria. Yes the more I think about it, the more I think this was how the beast...the plane eats.

I not certain the royal science academy has jurisdiction here, shallrana. But magic exists, Roger, whether from faith, or the mind or the world around us.

John raises a hand to shallrana Yes shallrana, I understand your viewpoint, there is no reason to go into that now. have always believed the person makes the power, so to speak. In that mind, roger, your new power is more like shallrana's than mine, in that it comes from your mind, or self. It is...psionic in effect. But we go off the track here. I think we do Hawcrofts bidding for now, until we can free ourselves of their control. Though I not exactly certain what they want of us.

a point of correction. We did not open the rift. Hawcroft did. We have neither the power or inclination to open a gate like that. Hawcroft engaged in dangerous magical practices and the world is paying the price. The only reason I haven't tried to take them down is the possibility they can fix it

john takes another sip of wine.

Also this contract is another thing. I don't remember signing it, so it's only their word against mine. I have not even seen it. If they want to take it to court I'm willing to fight it. Contracts under duress have no weight in law.. I'm biding my time right now.

Hawcroft is a totally capitalistic corporation, devoted to profit at all costs, with all the empathy and mercy of a shark, with none of its cheerful disposition. Actually, that's a bit hard on the shark. We are not employees, we are properly. And you Rick, represent competition to them. Or an opportunity. Do the maths.

John settles back in his chair. He looks at the party, one by one, and then grins. well I've never chaired a meeting before. Guess we best get started.
He has a sip of the wine and then continues.

We have four items to cover. One, the task hawcroft is giving us. Two, what we are gioing to do about that gate, and hopefully to find Baldwin. Third, freeing us from hawcrofts influence and fourth, of course, you Rick.

John smiles at the gnome.

Now I'm not going to rag onto you about your secrets. A man...er...gnome needs his secrets I suppose. Keep em. But if you are going to be in this group you have to decide if those secrets will bite us on the rear. Cause if they do, it will make me very grumpy. You don't want that. But if the rest of these miscreants, spys, giants and hunters accepts you, whats a lawman to do.

John looks at the others. His eyes lingered on Shallrana.

If any of you have objections about Rick, put them out on the table, out in the open. Then no more sniping after. Decide now if he remains or not. Clear.

He relaxes and waits for the others response.
