The Pirate Brethren of the Shackles have no Royals but if they did, John LaCroix would have noble blood.

The LaCroix pirate legacy stretches back centuries and all of the John's ancestors were famous pirates. John's father was a second mate on one of Captain Bloodfist best ships and his mother was a mighty pirate queen in her own right. On John's tenth birthday the current hurricane king himself walked up to the skinny boy and told young John, "A tall ship and a stout heart and you can own the world, lad" and pressed a cutlass into the kid's hand.

The sword has never left John's side ever since. The LaCroix's status among pirates allowed them luxuries other people didn't have. John was educated by a disgraced Alchemist and he learned about things like metallurgy and chemistry. John built his first gun when he was 19, a musket. Six months later, he killed the captain of a merchant vessel with that same gun and his legend began.

But the family has fallen on hard times. "Fingers" LaCroix, John's father, was killed by Privateers from Augustana and his brother-in-law, his sister, and their children were taken hostage. The privateers in Augustana gave John's mother, "Bloody Mary" McGee, a choice: retire from piracy, or the hostages die.

Robbed of their income, the remaining LaCroixs were forced to vacate Red Parrot Key, their ancestral island home. They moved into the slums of other pirate towns and many now scrounge for a living as peasant fishermen. So when John was recruited by the Pathfinders, he saw an opportunity. No LaCroix can work as a pirate in any kingdom of Golarion or his siblings and their families will face the noose. But as a Pathfinder he can go anywhere, earn gold, and perhaps even go to the prisons of Augustana...
