There will be more information on contests, game material, and demo play sessions for the Pathfinder Society built around the comic launch soon!

Thanks for your support. All of us on the team are excited to bring you more Pathfinder stories.

I know many of you on here are buying the comics physically through your Paizo subscription, but if any of you want to buy digitally or just want to sample the comic, comiXology is running a sale with most of the issues running for only 99 cents each.

Hey Steve,

The comic is coming back with a 3rd story arc called Pathfinder: City of Secrets that starts in March.

Once you see the art and extras being included with the new comic I think you'll all be very pleased.

I do quite a bit of research while working on the scripts to make sure little details like that are included. On top of that, the Paizo editorial team approves each issue just like they do for the RPG sourcebooks and novels, so they make sure it's canon throughout.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, gang! Everyone on the team works hard to deliver a top notch comic.

I'm proud to show two female characters like Merisiel and Kyra in a healthy relationship together. They're great characters rich with personality wearing outfits that exemplify their skills/role instead of being geared first and foremost towards 'sexiness'.

I hope you give the Special a read and enjoy it. Feel free to let me know what you think of it here in this thread or via Twitter (@jimzub).

Wait, so they went from fighting a black dragon to having a hard time against dire rats?

They're trapped in Ravenswatch prison. They were ambushed last issue and are now wounded, tired, and down to their last spells. The dire rats are a small threat at the start of this issue, not the 'main event'. These are just preview pages of the start, after all.

While trekking through an adventure I assume your adventuring group would fight threats both big and small. Just because the iconics fought a young black dragon one time doesn't mean they'll never fight anything less than that ever again. :P

Upcoming Pathfinder Comic Art Teasers

Pathfinder #19 will be in comic shops October 9th!

All of us on the team are excited about the issues in the pipeline and can't wait for all of you to read them.

In issue #7 on page 10 Harsk finds a dark tooth and calls it a "black fang" while describing it. Ezren uses that term as a nickname for the dragon and it sticks.

In the Pathfinder Beginner Box (which is inspiration for this story arc of the comic) it actually says the following:

"Although no one has seen the killer directly, a long black fang was found in one of the animal corpses, prompting the locals to sub the unseen killer 'Black Fang.'"

Which is what happens in the comic. Ezren is just using the nickname they came up with (which is also why that name is in quotes). The actual dragon doesn't call itself Black Fang.

All clear?

The first Pathfinder collection, Dark Waters Rising, and Pathfinder #7 have both arrivef in comic shops across North America this week.

Jim Zub here. The comic is most definitely not cancelled. We're plugging away on material for new issues and there will probably be a few 'Specials' coming in addition to the regular series. Lots of great Pathfinder comics still to come for 2013.

Our second story arc is called 'Of Tooth and Claw' and, although in ties into events from the first arc, it's also a solid place for readers to get on board if they haven't already.

The art on this second arc is being drawn by Jake Bilbao and you can check out the sample pages he drew to get the gig right here:

I like the story, but the artwork is a big deterrent for me. I think the characters are horribly over-exaggerated and the lines are ugly and out of proportion. It takes a lot of getting used to and I would hate for this to be anyone's first view of Golarion.

I also don't like how they made Valeros into such an obnoxious "frat boy". (Someone else in this thread coined that and I think it fits too well.) I never pictured Val as suave or sophisticated, but I never saw him as obnoxiously crude or arrogantly egotistical. (Was he really that much of a @$$%^&!! when he was being playtested?) That and the art made me almost drop the comic from my subscription.

The rest of it is pretty good, and the artwork for the flashback/ internal doubt section in the most recent issue is really pretty good. I'd love to see them dump Huerta and go with the new artist ASAP.

The story itself is interesting and I like how the goblins and the rest of the characters are written. I hope to see more about everyone's backgrounds.

However, the extra fluff and maps make this an excellent value even with the horrible initial art and the Fratboy hero. I'll keep reading, but I hope some things improve a little.

I appreciate your honest feedback.

As mentioned here and elsewhere, the artist on the series is changing for our second story arc. Jake Bilbao (the artist from the flashbacks in issue #5) is coming on board with issue #7. You can see his test pages here:

Jake Bilbao

Andrew's art wasn't to everyone's taste but I do think he brought a strong comic sensibility to the world. I'm sorry it didn't work for you.

In terms of Valeros- Keep in mind this first story is early in the group's adventuring career. We wanted to present them as flawed and in need of growth/improvement. Valeros is heroic, but obviously still quite rough and far from the person he will become over time.

The Valeros who apologizes to Kyra in the first issue and tells her he'll try to be more worthy the next time they meet is the kind of hero he wants to be, he's just not able to consistently be that, yet. :)

Hey gang,

Jim Zub here. I'm the writer of the official Pathfinder comic being published by Dynamite and Paizo.

Since the comic series follows the story of 6 Pathfinder iconics (Valeros, Seoni, Merisiel, Ezren, Kyra and Harsk) quite a few people have asked me if I'll be revealing/dealing with any homosexual relationships in the story and, I'm happy to say, yes!

When Paizo approached me about writing the series they asked me if, in addition to showing action-adventure elements, if I could include relationship drama and I was eager to make it a part of the series. Pathfinder fans have seen these characters for years on the RPG products but never had a sense of their back story or full personality. It's been an absolute blast working on that as the series progresses.

In issue #5 of the comic series (arriving Feb/March) there's a brief aside showing that at least one of the iconics is homosexual and, in our second story arc (issues #7-12), that character's relationship will be part of a subplot running through the arc.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the comic series yet, I suggest you give it a whirl. Along with 22 pages of comic story each issue has new gaming content and a fold-out mini battle map, making it well worth the cover price.

Feel free to drop me a line here or on Twitter if you have any questions/comments.

Dynamite already has issue #5 in their online shop as if 4 was in our hands. I can't help but feel they're putting as much effort into getting the product out as IDW did when they sabotaged the Fells FIve comic. It's like the comic industry refuses to give anything but lip service to tabletop RPGS.

Hey Gang,

As far as I know the delays on the Pathfinder comic have come up around art production, not any kind of 'sabotage' or lack of desire from Dynamite. I know it's frustrating to not have regular delivery on the issues, but having rushed or inconsistent art would cause even more problems down the road when new readers come across those issues and judge the series as a whole by them.

I'm staying ahead on writing to make sure Dynamite has a proper buffer of material to work with and can schedule appropriately. The first 'adventure' wraps up in issue #6 and I'm plugging away on the second story arc already with issues #7+, so know that the Pathfinder comic series will be continuing in 2013.

Thank you for your support!

That is a mahussive failure of expression: a chock is not something you use to make a record, but a piece of chalk might be.

The correct expression would be: "Normally I'd agree with you and chalk it up to innate behaviour..."

This clumsy inaccuracy was so jarring it actually shook me out of my immersion in the story.

My only gripe - What spell did Seoni cast in the tavern? Because it sure didn't seem to match up with anything on her character write-up. And no, I don't care that it's a comic book. If it's going to be based on a RPG, it better adhere to the rules/laws of that universe. With 3 casters in the party, they can't fall into the usual (lazy) comic-book-magic trope of "he/she can cast whatever the plot dictates".

I'm glad you enjoyed issue #1 and hope it keeps hitting the mark for you as the series continues.

Seoni cast the 0-level spell Daze on the brute in the tavern so he took no actions against her.

I'm writing to the stats and the Paizo gang are double-checking things as well to make sure it's do-able within the confines of the rules. :)

They're not really playing. I didn't want all the characters to be a perfect group of friends right off the bat. Personality differences and these kinds of little frictions help build interesting character moments.

magnuskn wrote:

The artwork looks like something out of a third tier 90's Marvel comic. Sorry, but, ugh. I hate the heavily distorted faces, they look like they melted.

The story I could gleam from the preview on Comicbookresources is pretty standard "party meets up in a tavern". I appreciated a look at what size Sandpoint really has and seeing Ameiko serving drinks was cool.

I can see where you're picking up on some of those visual elements, but believe me when I say that Andrew's work has more depth and consistency than the stuff you're referencing. Read through the entire first issue and I think you'll start to warm to it by the end. The quiet scenes 3/4 through the first issue show a subtlety you probably aren't expecting.

I'd much prefer a dynamic and interesting art style to bland/generic or overly photo-referenced comic art that looks like dead mannequins standing around. Andrew's work is developing and I think he's getting stronger with each issue.

Winter_Born wrote:

Totally disagree. It's not trying to be superhero art, but a stylized fantasy and it works great. One of our best artists, Frank Quietly has "distorted faces".

The storytelling/layouts are inventive and clear, and the backgrounds detailed. I'd say they got quite a catch as far as the art.

I know the writing is top notch as Skullkickers rocks.

Four boxes of Pathfinder #1 comics arrived on my doorstep this afternoon!

22 pages of comic story, 12 pages of RPG rules and background material plus a pull-out battle map, all for only $3.99!

The comic printed really well. Andrew’s line art comes through really clearly, as does Ross’ lush coloring. The battle map isn’t stuck into the issue in any way – it’s folded between the staples so you can remove it without damaging your comic, which was a nice surprise.

Pathfinder #1 will be sold in better comic and gaming shops starting August 15th, just in time for Gen Con, North America’s biggest gaming convention!

When I read details about Sandpoint, that mirror sign jumped out at me as a neat feature we could use as they enter the city. It gives extra character to the town.

Although we start of in familiar territory, the group will be exploring other spots that haven't been as well defined before and, especially after the first story arc, they'll be moving on to new/exotic places. Fun times ahead.

Last night I recorded an extensive podcast interview with Know Direction - a Pathfinder Podcast.
