Glad I scoured the boards before posting. I too was thinking that issue 4, 5 and 6 were dead! I guess issue 4 will be going out with the January subscriptions?

Having just read the first three issues I have to say I like the seris and will try the next 3.
My one complaint is the art seems very inconsistent. Characters almost look different from page to page...almost like different artist are drawing. But that is a minor point.
I loved the tavern scene in issue 1....though I was hoping to see more what Merisiel was up to at the tarvern.

We haven't had word yet from Dynamite about when to expect our shipment of Pathfinder Comic #4.
If you are ever curious about the status of subscription items for the current month, I have been posting Subscription Shipment Updates in the Customer Service Forum around the first week of every new month. Here is December's.
thanks

Dynamite already has issue #5 in their online shop as if 4 was in our hands. I can't help but feel they're putting as much effort into getting the product out as IDW did when they sabotaged the Fells FIve comic. It's like the comic industry refuses to give anything but lip service to tabletop RPGS .

Hey Gang,
As far as I know the delays on the Pathfinder comic have come up around art production, not any kind of 'sabotage' or lack of desire from Dynamite. I know it's frustrating to not have regular delivery on the issues, but having rushed or inconsistent art would cause even more problems down the road when new readers come across those issues and judge the series as a whole by them.
I'm staying ahead on writing to make sure Dynamite has a proper buffer of material to work with and can schedule appropriately. The first 'adventure' wraps up in issue #6 and I'm plugging away on the second story arc already with issues #7+, so know that the Pathfinder comic series will be continuing in 2013.
Thank you for your support!

So the first Pathfinder comic hardcover has been announced. Will subscribers be getting this as part of their subscription?

We'll make it an opt-in, which is to say that if you have an active subscription* at the time the hardcover ships, we'll apply the usual subscription benefits—in this case, a 20% discount off the cover price.
*"Active" means that at the time it ships, you must have already been sent the most recent issue of the subscription, or the most recent issue must be shipping along with it.

It contains content that is not in the comics... tempted to cancel my subscription and just buy the hardcovers: you get every cover that way as well.
I believe that the compilation does *not* include the pull-out map/poster inserts that are included with the individual issues. I don't know if it includes a complete cover gallery or not.

I got issue 4 the other day. Lini made a guest appearance but had to leave after a giving quick aid against the spiders. She couldn't stay and help more because she had a task elsewhere that needed taking care of. Maybe the second arc will have her and some of the others plus some of the other iconics.

I picked up issue #1 today. I liked the story quite a bit.
The art is going to take some getting used to.
I like the story, but the artwork is a big deterrant for me. I think the characters are horribly over-exaggerated and the lines are ugly and out of proportion. It takes a lot fo getting used to and I would hate for this to be anyone's first view of Golarion.
I also don't like how they made Valeros into such an obnoxious "frat boy". (Someone else in this thread coined that and I think it fits too well.) I never pictured Val as suave or sophistivated, but I never saw him as obnoxiouusly crude or arrogantly egotistical. (Was he really that much of a @$$%^&!! when he was being playtested?) That and the art made me almost drop the comic from my subscription.
The rest of it is pretty good, and the artwork for the flashback/ internal doubt section in the most recent issue is really pretty good. I'd love to see them dump Huerta and go with the new artist ASAP.
The story itself is interesting and I like how the goblins and the rest of the characters are written. I hope to see more about everyone's backgrounds.
However, the extra fluff and maps make this an excellent value even with the horrible initial art and the Fratboy hero. I'll keep reading, but I hope some things improve a little.

As mentioned here and elsewhere, the artist on the series is changing for our second story arc. Jake Bilbao (the artist from the flashbacks in issue #5) is coming on board with issue #7. You can see his test pages here:
Andrew's art wasn't to everyone's taste but I do think he brought a strong comic sensibility to the world. I'm sorry it didn't work for you.
In terms of Valeros- Keep in mind this first story is early in the group's adventuring career. We wanted to present them as flawed and in need of growth/improvement. Valeros is heroic, but obviously still quite rough and far from the person he will become over time.
The Valeros who apologizes to Kyra in the first issue and tells her he'll try to be more worthy the next time they meet is the kind of hero he wants to be, he's just not able to consistently be that, yet. :)

Love these comics. Love em. Combining my two favorite hobbies (comics and Pathfinder) is pretty much a godsend. While I can understand the criticism of the artwork in the books, it reminds me of a manneristic style that captures our heroes in a super-ideal sense; it is edgy (literally)and dark, and this heightens the story.
With that being said, I would love to see the other iconics in a story arc. Seelah, Lem, Amiri, Seltyiel, Sajan, and others should get their chance to shine in the comics. I hope to see this...if not...I'll still buy them.

See, now I liked the flashback artwork. So, now I'm looking forward to the next story arc.
Will there still be gaming maps in each of the comincs. Love them.
Yes, I understand that all of the characters are supposed to be flawed, but I hope Val becomes less of a jerk soon. I like the way he's portrayed in the RPG and I'd hate for the comic to be someone's impression of what the character should be like.

To be honest, there's a lot to love about the comics.
But from 40 pages with a map for the first 6 issues, we now get fewer pages, no map, and a release schedule that's 'erratic', to say the least.
What's going on folks? I see lots of ambition with the Goblins spin-off and one-shots, but a degree of monthly release consistency would be very welcome. Oh and more pages. And maps.
Steve Geddes |
I've only been following them for a year or so, but an irregular release schedule seems to be par for the course with comics - even with the larger companies and more mainstream titles. I've been very surprised (given how many years people have been producing comics) just how often the schedule slips - generally with no hint as to why nor when it will get back on track.
Erik Mona made a comment at one point that indicated the maps were likely to return in some format or other. He didnt really elaborate though, so it may not be exactly as it was initially.

Hey Gang,
I wanted to post a link to my blog where I've got a few teasers of upcoming art for Pathfinder #9-12 and the Pathfinder Special:
Upcoming Pathfinder Comic Art Teasers
Pathfinder #19 will be in comic shops October 9th!
All of us on the team are excited about the issues in the pipeline and can't wait for all of you to read them.
GeraintElberion |
I subscribed for the main story, not the goblin spin-off. I really hope it ends soon and we get back to the actual story.
I saw Dark Waters Rising in a bookshop in Birmingham a few weeks ago and it looked good. Is the Goblins line an attempt to push readers like me onto the hardbacks and away from the comics?

What's the 'Pathfinder Special'?
And why do the women in the Ananya piece look like love-dolls while all of the men, even the minor/background men, have faces?

Goblins is a separate series. It doesn't have to end for us to get back to the main story.

I like how all three pics look. This approach seems much less of a hyperbolic look that we have seen from earlier in the series. I appreciate that.

I appreciate the idea of spin-offs. I also appreciate Pathfinder's approach to goblins. I think the goblin spin-offs are fun and witty, but a little goes a long way.
But, I would much prefer a more Golarion-style approach to the stories. I think we see too much slapstick fantasy stuff, and too little serious fantasy material in general. One of the great things about Golarion is that its foundation is informed by the great sword&sorcery tradition, and in general it is dark and gritty. I'd like to see the comic get back to that.
A little bit of side humor is cool, but I also think, in this case, it detracts from the unique pathfinder goblins. There are elements that can be humorous, but in the end these are psychotic killers.

Each story has a different author and stupid/funny is probably the first thing you do with goblins.
Fortunately, the goblins in Zub's story are genuinely horrible.

I say this without any hesitation... the Pathfinder comic is my favorite comic series to read. I like it more than anything else I read regularly, including my beloved Green Lantern :)
The font they use for spellcasting is great, really one of my favorite features of this wonderful comic. Does anybody have any good links from free font sites for fonts similar to the runes they use?
DM Bacon |
Sorry to double post, but I just read #9 and... WOW. Such great storytelling.
[SPOILER WARNER in case you haven't read it yet]
I think the inclusion of two gay characters (or at least one apparently gay [Kyra)] and another apparently bisexual [Merisiel]) is very open minded of the authors and gives an air of authenticity to the comic.
Truly a great series :)
Erik Mona Publisher, Chief Creative Officer |
That's a very difficult project.
It would take at least 36 issues to do even a hugely condensed version of that story in the comic, and I don't have faith that a publisher would want to tie up a title with a single storyline for that long. Given the longevity of comic series in general these days, when publishers more often simply start over with a new #1 (which has already happened with our Pathfinder comic) make it even harder to imagine that we could pull it off.
I'd love to do it (and I mean _I_ literally would love to do it), but it just doesn't seem like the smartest play given the realities of comic publishing at this time. I just couldn't live with myself if the story got canceled a third of the way through or something. I'd be hounded until my dying days.

I got an email yesterday that my copy of City of Secrets #6 6 is getting ready to ship. I expect I'll see it in the next couple weeks. After that, I don't know. :)
Yeah issue six actually hit comic shops a couple weeks ago. It was good, but I want more. There are not enough fantasy comics out there.
Steve Geddes |
Me too. I'm not sure whether there's going to be an issue 7, a new series beginning at issue 1 again or whether the whole thing has been put on hold.
The comic industry is frustrating in its inability to publish and stick to a release schedule. Presumably a function of tiny margins and volatile markets.

The last issue, #6, said to be continued at the end of it, but I have not seen anything in Previews showing a new series or a new issue. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
HenshinFanatic |
I just started with City of Secrets (though I'm missing the first issue) and have to say that it is a lot more interesting than I expected. The style is very pulpy. I really hope there are more of these comics in the future. Waiting for issues #1 and #4 to come to my friendly, local comic shop so that I can finish reading the whole arc.

The hard cover books to these comics are gorgeous as well. I love how they added a small margin to the inner seam so that the comic page doesn't fall into the middle where you can't read it. I will continue to get individual issues, but will also get every hardcover as they are released. Dynamite has done a fantastic job with this series and I hope to see it continue. Wouldn't mind a few new iconics to show up. Maybe cycle characters through, change the line up a bit after each story arc.

I'm not sure when exactly it'll be announced, but very soon we'll be able to tell you about the comic plans. Which is good, because this is the most excited I've been about a comic project in... well, ever. :)
On Bleeding Cool, they have the new Dynamite solicitations up. The new Pathfinder mini-series is listed there. Just as a teaser : Valeros meets Amiri.
