Also, this from James Jacobs, which was made into an official errata: "Improved Natural Attack feat can not be applied to unarmed strike. We'll be issuing an errata for that feat that adds this sentence to the feat: "Improved Natural Attack can not be applied to unarmed strikes." Unarmed strikes ARE still treated as natural weapons for most effects (particularly for the spell magic fang and for amulets of magic fang), but the Improved Natural Attack feat is an exception to that rule." Since this feat, meant to apply to natural attacks, must explicitly state that it does not apply to unarmed strikes, it stands to reason that other feat effects do.

Well, your total is not bad, and I don't want to be greedy, but while I'm aware of the Tiger Claws bonus only happening once, I tend to disagree about the Dragon Style bonus. The feat specifically says it applies to the first attack. The tiger claw is the first attack, with two separate sources of damage occurring simultaneously. I don't see why it would only add to one, when they are both parts of the same first attack. I also don't really find the thread convincing. Only one person actually posted on the subject of power attack with Dragon Style, and the previous reasoning only said they didn't get the 3:1 ratio because they weren't 1.5xStr attacks.
I'm trying to figure out a Master of Many Styles Monk Build at level 8. This guy has a strength of 26, a +8 mod, with his equipment. He also has a +2 Amulet of Mighty Fists and a monk's robe. I am figuring that, with a full attack, this guy is doing 4D6 + 52 damage. Here's how I get there: Basic first attack a round, with power attack, is 2D6 + 24. This is because, for the first attack, Dragon Style reads "you can add 1-1/2 times your Strength bonus on the damage roll for your first unarmed strike on a given round", which is 12, and Dragon Ferocity reads "you gain a bonus on unarmed strike damage rolls equal to half your Strength bonus", for a further +4. Because on this first attack, and it is counted as a natural attack for the power attack effect, "A monk’s unarmed strike is treated as ... a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve ... natural weapons", and does 1.5 x Str, "This bonus to damage is increased by half (+50%) if you are making an attack with ... a primary natural weapon that adds 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier on damage rolls". His BAB is +6, so his base is +4 dam, +2 because of the 1.5x str mod. "natural attacks [are](attacks made without a weapon). These attacks fall into one of two categories, primary and secondary attacks. Primary attacks are made using the creature’s full base attack bonus and add the creature’s full Strength bonus on damage rolls." This describes a monk's attacks, so, when counted as natural attacks, they are counted as primary natural attacks. Now, the relevant text of Tiger Claws states, "you can use a full-round action to make a single unarmed strike with both hands. Use your highest base attack bonus, rolling unarmed strike damage for each hand separately ... If you use Power Attack in conjunction with this attack, can add half your Strength bonus to one of the damage rolls". This is a single unarmed strike with two damage rolls. There is absolutely nothing that implies that you don't add your strength bonus to both damage rolls. Power attack explicitly states that you add it to any damage roll, so it is added twice. This is a single, full-round attack, so it is the first attack of the round, so Dragon Style applies to it. Dragon Ferocity's bonus applies to unarmed damage rolls, so again, it applies to both. All this works out like this: 2 * (2D6 + 12 (str x 1.5, dragon style) + 4 (dragon ferocity) + 6 (power attack) + 2 (AoMF)) + 4 (power attack + tiger claws) Is there any way, according to RAW, this is incorrect?
So, I had a GM tell me today that he thought that Bastion stance, from the Sacred Mountain Monk Archetype, and Style Feats are incompatible, since both refer to stances. However, these are from rather different sources, and my impression that it is only style feats you can't use multiples of, not stances themselves. So, can you or can you not use Bastion Stance and Crane Style at the same time? |
