Abilities:

Animal Focus:
At 1st level, a hunter can take on the aspect of an animal as a swift action. She must select one type of animal to emulate, gaining a bonus or special ability based on the type of animal emulated and her hunter level. The hunter can use this ability for a number of minutes per day equal to her level. This duration does not need to be consecutive, but must be spent in 1-minute increments. The hunter can emulate only one animal at a time.
The hunter can also apply one of these aspects to her animal companion. Unlike with the hunter herself, there is no duration on the animal aspect applied to heranimal companion. An aspect applied in this way does not count against the hunter's minutes of duration per day—it remains in effect until the hunter changes it. The companion's aspect can be the same aspect the ranger has taken on or a different one. The hunter can select or change the animal foci on both herself and her animal companion as part of the same swift action.
If the hunter's animal companion is dead, the hunter can apply her companion's animal focus to herself instead of her animal companion. This is in addition to the normal one she can choose, and (as with a companion's focus) remains in effect until the hunter changes it instead of counting against her minutes per day.

Bat: The creature gains darkvision to a range of 60 feet. At 8th level, the range increases by 30 feet. At 15th level, the creature also gains blindsense to a range of 10 feet.

Bear: The creature gains a +2 enhancement bonus to Constitution. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.

Bull: The creature gains a +2 enhancement bonus to Strength. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.

Falcon: The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Perception checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.

Frog: The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Swim checks and on Acrobatics checks to jump. These bonuses increase to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.

Monkey: The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Climb checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.

Mouse: The creature gains evasion, as the rogue class feature. At 12th level, this increases to improved evasion, as the rogue advanced talent.

Owl: The creature gains a +4 competence bonus on Stealth checks. This bonus increases to +6 at 8th level and +8 at 15th level.

Snake: The creature gains a +2 bonus on attack rolls when making attacks of opportunity and a +2 dodge bonus to AC against attacks of opportunity. These bonuses increase to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.

Stag: The creature gains a 5-foot enhancement bonus to its base land speed. This bonus increases to 10 feet at 8th level and 20 feet at 15th level.

Tiger: The creature gains a +2 enhancement bonus to Dexterity. This bonus increases to +4 at 8th level and +6 at 15th level.

Wolf: The creature gains the scent ability with a range of 10 feet. The range of this sense increases to 20 feet at 8th level and 30 feet at 15th level. The range doubles if the opponent is upwind, and is halved if the opponent is downwind.

Wild Empathy:
A hunter can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions as a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person. The hunter rolls 1d20 and adds her hunter level and her Charisma modifier to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.
To use wild empathy, the hunter and the animal must be within 30 feet of one another under normal conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time.
The hunter can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but she takes a –4 penalty on the check.

History and Appearance:

Backstory:
With a sneer the Archheathen of Corentyn turned as if to listen to a voice at his shoulder.
Infernal: *mutterings*
He locked his eyes on the young child before him
“I see what you are boy, I have means beyond your imagining. You blaspheme in my house! I should have you strung up in the grounds! I would do it myself! I would wear your skin as a cloak! But you are my only son, though those words are as acid on my tongue, I’ll not let the family line end… You are forbidden from leaving your room. We shall see if your eyes can be opened to the truth of the Gods in time…”

Years pass...

…The infernal fire spread over the pale flesh like ants, the pain was unbearable, but Gabriel was numb to most of it by now…

In the following weeks...

The manservant wrung his hands

”please sir, not all the gods are behave as those your father courts… I myself have quietly followed the ways of Sarenrae, the Dawnflower would be a help to you, if only you would listen!”

Gabriel did not look up from his writing.

”There are no Gods for me. Idle. Neglectful. Willfully Malicious. All gods demand much and offer precious little but chains in return. I will never parley with, kneel before, or serve any deity! ”

The pen hit the paper, punctuating the end of the letter like a bolt slamming closed.

Yet more years pass...

…The Knock at the door was nothing more than a tap, but Gabriel knew what it meant, opening the door let in the furtive candle light from the corridor. The voice from the threshold was a whisper of doom,
“the newborn is a boy young sir… I’m sorry”
World shattering proclamation made, the candle withdrew. The door was closed with a trembling hand…

That night...

Gabriel takes the backpack from the manservant and shoulders the weight
“I could never thank you for your help tonight Horace, for your help always…”
I will never have the chance, I will never be returning
Gabriel turns and slips through the small sidedoor - out into the night.
“goodbye Horace”
Infernal: “come Vestris”
Gabriel moves off through the dark gardens, headed for the docks with Vestris hovering above,

The shadow wove slowly, cautiously across the gardens. Gabriel was no more…

Hours later...

Dawn has not broken an hour before he arrives at the docks,
“I need to travel immediately, when do you leave?... certainly, costs, I understand... my name? My name is Janus. A map? Sure I’ll buy a map, whatever it takes to get me on a ship! …I'm not interested in where it’s going.”

Moments later...

As Janus sits in his bunk, the Corentyn docks fading to morning mist behind him, a large bird follows the boat on high, a speck in a clear sky. Tears begin to fall on the crude map Janus clutches in both hands. ‘Sargava,’ an uncivilized land of savagery and terror. What escape was this…

Appearance:
Janus is an unremarkable figure, 6 feet tall with short dark hair in a style that, whilst not unfashionable, is perhaps a few years out of date. He looks to have lived a soft, untroubled life. He is somewhat meticulous about his appearance, others see this as just an affectation of the privileged; the truth is that under his clothes the entire of his left arm and chest are a mess of burn scars and tortured flesh. A lasting memory of his father’s kindness. Whilst out of armour he wears the traveling clothes of a noble, always sure to keep gloves on, these clothes look to have never seen intensive use. When armed Janus wears an unblemished suit of scale mail and fights in a classical Chelaxian duelling stance with his basket hilted longsword (crafted for his 18 birthday by a distant uncle currying favour with the Archheathen) and a light buckler. The fact is that Janus has never spilled blood in anger. Since his confinement Janus has become closer and closer with his hunting hawk, Vestris, this growing companionship has awakened limited natural powers in the young man.

Janus is an arrogant man, not through any malice by purely by upbringing. He tries to keep to himself but cannot help intervening when he thinks he knows better.

Vestris' Story:
Vestris is a black Chelaxian Hawkowl, a large breed of raptor used for hunting by the Chelaxian elite. The two had been working together when Janus was imprisoned and Vestris would come to the windows of Janus’ rooms whenever she was able. Janus considers these visitations lifesaving and feels he owes a great debt to the, now aging, bird.

Order of the first Law:
Janus has sworn himself to the order of the First Law, which has the following edicts: The adherant must strive to protect atheists and all those who reject the gods. He must never have a patron deity or willingly serve agents of the divine. He must protect the common folk from suffering due to the actions of divine agents.
