I meant to post about this earlier--nice Pulp Fiction reference!

Next time Jim's path crosses that of the gladiator trainer, he murmurs, "Any idea how long we'll have to wait?"

FYI, I'm the Overseer GM for the GameDay PFS1e special, and I have no idea what the time commitment is going to be for it--I've frontloaded all of the overseer posts and saved them on Google Drive, so I can drop them into the various game threads quickly, and that will help. I may be slower to post, though.

Cap'n:
Jim grins at the gladiator. "Why, a man of the world such as yourself should know that a stranger in a game can only lose--either coin or blood, and at the moment I'd prefer to keep both. Besides, if things go sideways in a hurry, at least a couple of us shouldn't be caught sitting down. Once all this is done, though, I'm buying."

Jim waits, looking around the area every now and then. I'm guessing that no one there is much for small talk.

Jim keeps an eye on the party's backtrail, trying to tell how hard it'd be to track the group. Otherwise, he stays mum unless spoken to--it doesn't seem like a chatty occasion.

I'm about to have one of those lovely medical procedures that they like to do every five years or so, once you're Of A Certain Age, so I'll be unconscious for a while later today. Wish me luck--at least the prep for this one has gone better than the last couple of times I had to do this.

The Taldan pats his pack. Feck, I never did pick up any more fire flasks. Ah, well--if we run into a roach swarm, I should be able to outrun the thug. He follows Jaravo's lead, sloshing through the marsh.

"Come at the queen, you'd best not miss. Recall what one of 'em did to you with magic--it's true that an axe 'tween the shoulderblades will cramp any magicker's style, but there's at least two of them. Besides, I don't think they'll interfere with the heist in case it goes sideways. We're their expendables, hey? "

"Feck. We'll have to watch ourselves with one of Calistria's own in the mix. Remember the wasps on that island near Kepre Dua? Where I had the chat with Qualmaga's whale?" Despite the concern in his voice, there's a twinkle in the Taldan's eye as he recalls some other aspects of that particular adventure.

Besides, keep in mind that supposedly the contract magic will let them know if I stop working to get them their magic vial. Jim's going to show up to guard the next morning and be ready to turn coat when the time is right.

Re 5e, I know people who play the game and enjoy it, and that's really the whole point. OTOH, it seemed like Wizards never really got the message on why Paizo has done so well--Paizo started out doing fluff, and developed a rules system to support that. Wizards has focused on rules, which was a fine thing back when the hobby was small and dominated by people with lots of free time to write their own fluff. Most of us don't have that kind of time, which makes the Wizards model self-limiting...especially if you're the kind of company that chases off the folks who are perfectly happy to write fluff for you.

Jim will pay their tab, but nurses his own drinks before making his way back to the Bloody Fortune. He doesn't have the magic or stealth skills of his shipmates, but he'll still take a circuitous route in case he's being followed.

Jim murmurs to Sveteski, "You're good...." Then he shouts, "BUT THERE'S AN OCEAN OF BLOOD IN MY WAKE, AND YOU LOOK LIKE ANOTHER DROP IN IT!"

Shaken Intimidate check: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 - 2 = 21

You can tell how seldom someone tries to disarm Jim that I've messed up the number so badly and never caught it. AFAICT his CMD vs. disarm attempts should be 27 (!?). Check my math:

Base CMD=10 + BAB + STR bonus + DEX bonus

=10 + 7 + 2 + 3

=22

Deceptive Strike adds another +1 vs. disarm with one hand free.

The Improved Disarm feat adds another +2 vs. disarm.

Dodge bonuses to AC also increase CMD, so another +1 for the Dodge feat and +1 for Elusive (which I also never added to his profile, even though I included it in his AC).

My intent was that if no one else seemed to be using lethal force, Jim wouldn't either. My fault for not being clearer. I'll verify Jim's CMD vs. disarm.

If it looks like everyone else is fighting for real, Jim strikes.

Rapier attack, incl. shaken penalty: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 13 - 2 = 15

This time, luck is not with him.

"Pirates know a few tricks, hey?" Jim retreats before the other fighter, trying a hands-free backflip and putting a little extra into it.

Acrobatics check, including shaken penalty and panache: 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (12) + 12 - 2 + (5) = 27

Effectively a showy 5' step back using a move action to get fancy, holding an attack for when his opponent closes.

Thanks for your patience. The special has wrapped, so I should have more time for this (although I'll be going to a conference next week where I'm chairing one session and presenting at two others, so time will be short for other reasons).

Cool. What Game Day is this? Isn't Free RPG Day in June or something?

It's an Organized Play online event, the equivalent of a gaming convention. In addition to the usual PFS/SFS scenarios, there are also three specials--multitable games, where the success or failure of one party can affect how others do. This is my first time running a specials table, but I've played in a few over the past several years.

Jim gives the man a slightly nervous smile.

Bluff attempt to seem worried: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Maybe not that nervous, as the confidence born of many combats shows through for anyone with even a little bit of experience in reading people. "Jim, and I hope so, too." He closes slowly and goes for a disarm.

Disarm attempt: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25

Jim listens to Dingus and Corliss, pausing every now and then to take another swig of grog. "All right, mates--sounds like we have a plan...mostly. Depends on what Kaul gets himself into, hey? Tomorrow, you two go back to the artisan, and I'll try to dazzle Jaravo. How's that?"

After his listening tour, the Taldan settles his tab and rejoins the party. "Well, I found out a couple of things. First, the Arena Bar pours a decent mug. Second, the gent who auditions fighters likes showoffs. I think I can do a bit of that, and Kaul can scare the sh1te out of any number of foes--probably go over pretty well."

Acrobatics check, including panache: 1d20 + 12 + 1d6 ⇒ (17) + 12 + (2) = 31
