Like most of the stuff in book of the dead (my beloved and favorite book).

Like especially Lich Archetype (I don't get how it's bad, but everyone says so. But that won't stop me from enjoying it.)

My personal opinion, and just drawing from the one item you're asking about...

Lich archetype (I'm not judging if it's bad or not) I would generally say no to (not because it's powerful or not) but because it's generally not appropriate for most campaigns. But, the thing is, Lich specifically is also not a 1st level choice. In fact, you need 6th level spells, putting it at least level 11. So within the context of the campaign we're playing, if you can weave it into the story to make it make sense that you're going after lichdom while not alienating the rest of the party such that they would want to continue working with your character (unlikely in anything except an "evil" party) then...maybe. I might require that you and I (if we were player and GM) have private sessions where you quest after the pieces/items/knowledge required to become a lich. It would depend.

At character creation, if lichdom was your goal, I would tell you "Maybe, but I can't guarantee it's going to happen". It would depend on a lot of stuff happening in between. It wouldn't be as simple as the ritual to become a lich and create a soul cage being a check box, there would be work involved it actually meeting those requirements (which I think is why it's listed as rare in the first place).

Hm. I would think that the other members of your party don't need to know you're striving for lichdom == until you make it and enslave them all. ;-)

Hm. Been a while since anyone posted here. No matter. I've been looking at the Class DC Proficiency Bonuses table. You have all the classes starting at Trained except for Magus, Summoner, Psychic, and the Summoner's Eidolon. With the publication of Dark Archive (Remastered) and Impossible Magic the Magus, Summoner, and Psychic, at least, start (and remain through level 20) at Trained, like the other casters. Not sure about the Eidolon. Does he have a separate Class DC, or does he use the Summoner's, or does he not have one at all? In my reading on the class, I couldn't find an answer.

Do eidolons have a Class DC? If so, do they have their own, separate from the Summoner's, or do the two share the one Class DC?

"Tenser, said the tensor.
"Tension, apprehension, and dissension have begun."

I hope they have a few Elixirs of Life and/or Healing Potions. And a healing kit. :-)

Some changes:

Akorian is a Eurythnian (part of New Thassilon) of Azlanti descent who 10,000 years ago in Azlant worshiped Acavna, goddess of the moon and defensive battle. He was a Battle Harbinger for her because he truly believed in her. Recently transported forward in time he discovered that Acavna died trying to save the world from Earthfall. After discussion with several sages and clerics, he gave his allegiance to Arqueros, the Golden Bulwark, an Empyreal Lord, because he found Arqueros closest in philosophy to Acavna among the gods he could discover today. And those are the only two Rare ancestries for which that is true, at least according to AoN -- which I've found to be pretty accurate in general.

I was never the kid who sat in the back of the car whining through the whole trip "are we there yet?" but... Can we have a Pathbuilder file for Usharak? Or at least a few character sheets? I could get to like this guy. :-)

For myself if the character worships Tsukiyo (for example) he'd have to be from Tian Xia or have some other reason he worships that god (who is presumably not well known in, say, Avistan).

Hm. Tsukiyo is interesting. Apparently he was dead, but then was resurrected.

The comment about holes in Paizo's canon was general, not specific. Paizo's excuse would likely be "we just haven't got around to publishng that yet". Whatever "that" may be. :-)

According to AoN, in PFS selecting Automaton for a character's ancestry "needs a boon to gain access to this option".

Hm. Gravity Weapon isn't a Class Feat, it's a Focus spell. The corresponding Class Feat is Initiate Warden.

Interesting guide. I may have to build one of these. :-)

Interesting. I put together a partial Pathbuilder build. If you see anything you'd do differently, let me know. :-)

Also, I haven't made any spell selections yet.

Interesting. The Appendix to Divine Mysteries is a terribly poorly formatted (for a pdf anyway) list of many gods, with several subdivisions. One of those is "In memoriam," covering "other dead, missing or unaccounted-for gods". Aroden is there. So is Gorum. Acavna is not -- she's listed under "Azlanti gods". Which makes me wonder: are the other Azlanti gods, the ones not killed by Earthfall, still around, or have they died out? I'm guessing still around, though I wonder where they live.

Let's just say there's a lot of holes in Paizo's canon.

Or you could take the General Training heritage to acquire the Incredible Initiative feat & get +2 Initiative. Better than the +1 from Battle Hardened.

Thanks for pointing that out. I had a feeling there was another way to get a boost to initiative, but I'd forgot what it was, and a search of AoN failed to turn it up.

I suppose if I can't have Acavna I'll take the Empyreal Lord Arqueros and if I can't have battle-trained human I'll take skilled human and add Intimidation to his trained skills.

I'll just note that Acavna's entry in Divine Mysteries lists a divine font (heal) and divine spells, among other things she "shouldn't" have.

Also Akorian was born before Earthfall, and brought forward in time as part of the events that resulted in the founding of New Thassilon.

I wanted a god whose preferred weapon is the spear. Surprisingly there aren't many of those.

Stupid <expletive deleted> forum software deleted most of my post. Screw it.

"Your family has trained for battle for generations, granting you advantages against your enemies. You gain a +1 bonus to initiative rolls.

It's apparently not in Aon. :-(

Does anyone stand for the long dead Acavna in providing divine power? Typically it's not the case. Worshippers of Aroden don't have powers from him and aren't clerics.

I wondered about that myself. All I know is that Herolab doesn't seem to care that she's dead.

When I was in college in the early 70s, Star Trek was on three different networks at 5, 6, and 7 PM. The trekkies would insist on watching all three in the student union, which really pissed off the people who wanted to watch the evening news.

Nah, you just have to memorize the Paizo source for every piece of artwork they've published. :-)

One of the problems with designing a game where magic has existed for thousands of years is that you would expect that anything that can be done with magic will have been figured out long ago. Including things that aren't in any fantasy game that I'm aware of. Read, for example, Timothy Ellis' stories of the Hunter Imperium Universe. He recommends you start with the Spacemage Trilogy: Yesterday's Spacemage, Today's Spacemage, and Tomorrow's Spacemage. They're all available on Kindle Unlimited, if you have that. That's how I've read them.

Of course, in the Hunter Imperium Universe, magic is simply a matter of intent. 1) you have magic, 2) you intend that something happens, 3) it happens. If you screw up the intent, things might happen that you didn't think you intended. One of Ellis's mages got mad at a bunch of people and yelled at them to "go home!" Near as folks could figure out later, everyone in the galaxy went home at that point, or tried to. :-)

The term bounded spellcasting may not be used in the description for the archetype, but cleric battle harbingers use that spell progression and players who know it will probably still use the term to refer to it

Other than that, yes, it might as well be obsolete

Yeah, I was just looking at the Battle Harbinger and discovered that.

What I said was that the term wasn't used in the description of the (Secrets of Magic) Classes. It was used in the description of the multiclass archetypes. Which is what threw me.

Welcome to the internet

I would imagine I got "here" before most people. My first introduction to what has become the Internet was in 1982 or so. My immediate boss had participated in part of the original Arpanet project at Bolt, Baranek, and Newman. He was probably at BB&N in the early or mid '70s. One day he decided to show me something. Picked up the phone, dialed a long distance number (we were in Hawaii) put the handset into the acoustic coupler, typed a couple of commands on the computer and boom, we're logged in to some computer at MIT. Later he switched us to Cal Tech. It was, as Spock might put it, very interesting. :-)

I guess nobody from Paizo reads this forum. :-(

In Hârnmaster, where wizards are expected to research all the spells they learn after their apprenticeship, and in fact are required to "invent" three new (at least to them) spells for promotion to journeyman, the question of whether a particular spell can exist is left pretty much entirely up to the GM. For example if the GM doesn't want a "Fly" spell to exist, he simply tells the mage that his research effort fails. Every time. Presumably the mage will eventually give up. :-)

In Pathfinder, where the spells that exist are defined by Paizo, or perhaps by third party publishers, there is no real mechanism other than rarity that the GM can use to restrict or eliminate certain spells from his version of Golarion -- or whatever other setting world he's using.

This term was introduced in Secrets of Magic specifically in the discussion of the Magus and Summoner Multiclass Archetypes. It was never really defined, but appears to refer to the fact that in those archetypes as one gained levels, one would have spell slots for only the highest two spell ranks one could cast, and would lose any lower spell slots that one had previously. Reference was made to the base classes, whose spell slots worked the same way, but the term "bounded spellcasting" was never used directly in connection with the base classes. I think this was an oversight.

As I understand the term, then, "bounded spellcasting" refers to a case where, as a character increases in level, that character retains spell slots for only the two highest ranks of spell he can cast, losing any spell slots of lower rank he may previously have had.

The recently published Impossible Magic redesigned both the Magus and Summoner base classes and the corresponding archetypes so that their spell slots are no longer "bounded" in the sense above. In fact the term "bounded spellcasting" appears no where in the book.

As far as I know, no other spellcasting class or multiclass archetype is "bounded" in this way.

Conclusion: The term "bounded spellcasting" is obsolete, at least until (and if) Paizo decides to reintroduce it -- at which time I hope they'll be clearer as to what it means and to what it applies.

Did I miss something?

The guide still mentions bounded spellcasting in a couple of places, but as I understand it the term is now obsolete -- with the publication of Impossible Magic there is no more bounded spellcasting. Did I miss something?

A while back there was a "Risk and Rewards" Playtest for two new classes: Daredevil and Slayer. I think it ended in April. Haven't seen anything since. I assume the idea was a new rulebook called "Risks and Rewards". Still in the pipeline? Eaten by Rovagug? Inquiring minds want to know! :-)

Fscking lawyers.

I don't recall any of your characters, RD, having a class archetype. Have I missed one? Just curious.

On the store, this book is noted as "Remastered", but the pdf I have, which was downloaded in July of 2023, has the OGL, not the ORC in the back. I find only this version in my downloads, in my downloads library, and as far as I can tell, in the store. So has this thing been remastered or not?

"It's not just OGL content that isn't allowed on Infinite, it's also ORC content."

So you can't publish anything to do with Pathfinder on Infinite? That's how this statement reads to me.

"you might be able to write Kineticist content on Pathfinder Infinite specifically."

So on Infinite, but not elsewhere?

Seems to me this question is so thorny it's not worth the effort to write anything for Pathfinder. I'll just go take a nap instead.

I know. :-)

"Cast a Spell" is an activity. An activity is one or more actions. The phrase would be correct if the words "Cast a Spell or" were removed. But then you'd get idiots claiming that it doesn't apply to spellcasting because spellcasting isn't explicitly mentioned, or because it's not necessarily a single action. Damned whatever you do.

Perhaps the phrase would be better with the above removal and the substitution of "activity" for "action", or the addition of "or activity" after "action".
