Lets please have a moment of silence for Seoni, who passed away last night in Rise of the Runelords.
*silence*
I've lost characters before and been through this and its triggered a spirited internal discussion. What to do? I've had her in the adventure with 6 characters (I play 2 groups of 3 concurrently) since the spring, now almost done with Adventure pack 4, but now she is "dead".
Sigh.
When Lini and Ezren died back in adventure 2, I "house ruled" that they didn't die, they just should lose something, blah, blah, blah. But that lasted about 10 minutes of it feeling "wrong" and they got put back in the box. I just know for myself, if I don't follow the rules closely, I lose the sense of accomplishment. I know others feel different, I wish I did too, but it loses something if they don't die and keep their skills.
So, for Lini and Ezren I had decided to start from the beginning again with a smaller group to get them up to the level of the other characters again, and then took the 6 characters together (almost) through Adventure 4.
Then, last night, tired, not paying attention, Seoni had only 4 cards left and met the Harpy monk, failed the WIS roll, then met her maker....
Since she is my favorite character by far, it kind of takes away my desire to play a little bit.... But going all the way back and removing all the cards and starting her from scratch by herself this time is... unappealing. Spent hours thinking about it and decided it this way:
Since I have S&S and never played it yet, I moved her there, shuffled in a couple of class decks, the add-on character deck and set up 3 groups of 3 (with the class decks, I figure I'm good here...) which will now start S&S together and I'll put aside RotR until Seoni has got herself back to the same level she had been at before her "death". At that point, she will leave S&S and head back to RotR...
So, she wasn't "killed", she was grievously wounded, but survived. After a period of recovery, she was called to an adventure on the high seas! But, she has never forgotten her wounds from the Harpy monks... She'll be back, revenge is sweet.....
