He grips his axe steelily and prepares to follow the rest of the group.

Helferick is no stranger to mining and starts hammering away at one side of the crack with a pick.

"Shouldn't take too long to make it big enough to slip inside. If there's something useful and we want easy access that'd take longer." he answers Jevar. "Probably not enough room for us all to work easily. You should keep an eye open for anything else in the cave. If they didn't notice the bats, it'll be hard to miss us banging away."

Helferick calms down slightly as the last undead falls, then heads back to where the first zombie fell. As he shrinks back to normal size, he retrieves the ring. Poking the dismembered finger out with his own, he casts a spell (Detect Magic) and examines it.

"Thought I spotted this flying past my face." he grins, as he shows it to the others.

As they pick through the remaining corpses, he recasts the spells, attempting to identify anything magical.

"These things have been busy," he remarks as they turn up more gear. "Good thing we've stopped them."

No-one chose five years of hard labor over lifetime of dedication, eh? Not the choice I'd make myself. If I don't understand the magic behind it, doubt a bunch of bandits would. I reckon they probably just took the option that sounded cushier and thought maybe they'd be able to nip off later when no-one was looking. Bandits'll surrender easily enough, but I reckon it's unlikely they'll have a permanent change of heart. Depends how much they're weakened I suppose.

Once things are a bit calmer, Helferick will speak up. [B]"As the one keeping an eye on the money, I'm just wondering if this means the kingdom's going to be footing the bill for looking after them? If they picked hard labour it'd be fine - the work covers the cost of imprisoning them, but it sounds like they'll be treated better than other prisoners. We've got room in the budget for it, but I'd still like to know.

Fangberries are worth it though - they're good eating, and those with the know-how can brew 'em into potions."

I can get by in the wild but that's different from putting it onto paper. If you want all the fancy squiggles on the map to look right, we should probably hire an actual mapmaker.
