For my group the graffetti was a big clue to Drakthar's nature and after the run in with the were-rats in the bath house they decided to wait a day and pool cash to buy a silver weapon for the main tank (there were also one or two floating around in Life's Bazaar). With 2 clerics, a paladin and sister Jenya at the temple they had a decent chance to know something about vampires (via Knowledge: religion).

He ambushed them three times and retreated as soon as they started casting. Twice he nearly killed the Aisimar Paladin (once tossing him off of that rope bridge) so they returned to the surface. On their third encounter with him, in the cavern below is coffin, he dominated the Dwarf spiked-chain fighter who nearly wiped out the group. 3 players dog-piled the dwarf while the Duskblade got real lucky with a few "Kilgore's Fire bolts" and took down Drakthar.

Drak's got a huge AC vs mundane attacks but very few HP so a steady volley of magic missiles or ranged touch attacks really nuters him.

I also somehow missed that this AP was geared for 6 rather than the standard 4. And here I thought my party of 5 players was just being a bunch of cry babies (/evil laugh). We only lost one member in Jzadirune (gnome wizard)and that was because he forced my hand. Let's just say he "shot the hostage to take him out of the equation" and I felt the beholder should give him more than I slap on the wrist for that(even if they manage to get him unstoned, the death ray still got him too).

There have been several instances of near TPK but they always manage to squeek by and I've yet to have to "save" them. He do use the action pont rules as they apear in the Unearthed Arcana (gives a few more options than the Eberron rules) and I was generous with a 32 point stat buy (and they still whined at first, but now they feel they are too powerful).

We're currently in Flood Season and the group is just a tad ahead of where I expected them to be EXP-wise (they are very thorough explorers) but now I know why. They just lost their second member ( a spell-thief) in the Lucky Monkey.

We start the SCAP tomorrow night for the first time. Our line-up is pretty basic:

1/2 Orc Barbarian (Dream plagued)
1/2 Elf Fighter (/wizard/Spellsword to be; Scion of Surabar[one his human side])
Dwarf Cleric of Moradin (Exorcist to be; Noble)
Human Warlock (Scarred Soul)
Human SpellThief (dragon blooded)

I was generous with 32 points to buy stats. They whined anyway...

Actually the biggest reason that the wouldn't want to turn it over to someone else is that they've been offered 2500 gp to solve it which they don't get if someone else does all the work. After the mugging they pretty much get hired on to do a job that pays well because the cleric girl believes its likely going to be dangerous. Money tends to motivate most players pretty well.

make sure that the gnome mentions that the previous residents of Jzadirune crafted magic items and drop hints that some may have been left behind (cursed or otherwise).

If money and "heroic resolve" fail, try bribery "Please don't turn me into the city watch! I was afraid for my life. If you don't, I promise to [insert bargaining chip here]."
