Hûnidark raises a bushy eyebrow as the fleeing elf speeds past him. With the bog before him slowing movement, he’s certain pursuing a frog would lead to being quickly surrounded. Better to draw them in. He sidles away from Ulfbrecht, forming a ragged line with his nearest allies. If the frogs moved in, they might be able to flank the beasts. OK, so does the boggy terrain count as ‘Swamp’? In addition to the 1/2 move, do we also get these penalties: STR and DEX checks versus a +2 CL and WIS checks versus a +1 CL? As he’s been through much of this journey, the large half-orc is toward the front of the group. He advances slowly into the brush in pursuit of the strange sounds. He spies the frogs. A bit of gallows humour flashes through his mind. Never seen a blue-arm-tongued frog before. There’s a rare breed. Not looking forward to wading into a bog for a fight, Hûnidark hides behind the bushes, leaving the path clear for the archers to fire on the frogs. If the amphibians die – so much the better. Otherwise, he expects the frogs may retreat into the river or potentially advance into cestus-range. Huni is on the map. Status: HP: 14 / 14 | AC: 13 (12 w/o DEX)

The half-orc tugs at his beard, thinking. "We don't know this has anything to do with the prisoners. Seems like we should do a few things quick: Look for Miss or traces of her, ask folks if they saw or heard anything odd last night, and then maybe talk to the prisoner. But, even if he had nothing to do with it, I'll wager he tries to barter his freedom using her."

Hûnidark returns to the Baron of Mutton after his dawn constitutional to find the place in an uproar. It takes a moment to sort out what’s happening. He doesn’t try to stop Haldelar as others seem to be engaged in that venture. Rather, he speaks to him quietly. ”Let him go, sir, so we can find the truth. If he sullied Miss, I’ll be happy to pin him down so you can give him a proper beating… But all we know is your girl is missing. That’s the bigger concern, eh?”

Baron of Mutton Hûnidark moves through the tavern towards the group’s table, eyes alert to where trouble may be coming from: large men with the look of brawlers or anyone who gives the half-orc too hard a stare. He takes a seat at the table’s end, making it easy to meet trouble without having to skirt around other people. The chair protests slightly as he settles his bulk in it. He nods politely to Jenneleth’s beau. ”Nice to meet you." He glances at the serving board. "When you have a chance... I’d like chowder, bread, and cheese, please.”

Hûnidark grabs Marko’s rope and pulls him and the horse around the building before untying the unconscious bandit. He lets the body slide none-too-gently onto the ground. Then the half-orc drags the man like a sack of potatoes before ‘depositing’ him in the cell. Once Marko is in as well, Hûnidark turns to the ranger. ”Couple of things. That Carlanis is a tough nut. He cracked my skull pretty good and he ain’t dumb. So, take care with him and expect a trick or three.” He considers for a moment before weighing his words carefully. ”I’m sure your magistrate is a better judge than me… but I think Marko was telling some truth. Maybe he’s just gullible, or maybe the coin was so good he forgot his common sense. I dunno. But I don’t think he set out to be a bandit.” He looks at Marko through the cell window. ”Remember what I told you. Don’t let that bastard fit you for a noose or the executioner’s block. Good luck.”

Hûnidark marks the location of the Silver Crown from beneath his bushy brows. It’s unlikely to be a bandit stronghold… but it was where Marko and his friends were ‘recruited’, so it might be worth a visit. For the moment, he moves with the group to relieve themselves of the prisoners. After that, securing the chest and the rider’s effects was the next priority… which probably meant he would be playing guard this evening.

Do art, gems, and jewelry sell at the same discounted rate as say a helmet, or do they get full price?

Delicately, and with utmost care, he lifts the woman by her waist, as if he were transporting a fragile vase. She’s so small. He doesn’t back away from the horse until Jenneleth’s feet are securely in the stirrups. It was a strange moment, like from the tales he’d read as a boy. The noble knight, full of pure intentions, helped the fair damsel onto his destrier. He’d always wanted to be the knight but, in his head, he’d almost always been cast in the role of the defeated – and very dead – ogre. But now, well, this was maybe the closest he’d ever be to feeling like a real knight. Jenneleth wrote:

He puts his hand over his heart and stumbles a bit over his phrasing, ”It’s… That’s a… great honor, Miss. Thank you.” As the troop proceeds along the road, the over-bright sun and the pounding in Hûnidark’s skull from the brigand’s savage blow seem somewhat lessened or maybe weighing those against the moment with Jenneleth seemed a fair trade.

If he wakes up and worries you, I’ll put him out again.” Hûnidark hesitantly makes a motion to help the lady onto the horse, if she needs it. He expects her to decline, but it was the right thing to do. Marko wrote: "Wait! We are no red-masked cultists! Please... I'd have no truck with such as them! From where he stands by the horse, debating how best to continue the journey, Hûnidark offers another alternative. ”Robbery, maybe extortion, and ransom... Fetters prove little.” He tacks to the matter at hand. ”Miss, can you ride? If you can, we’ll put you on the horse and tie the leader like a saddlebag behind you. Marko there will be tied to the mule and walk behind it... If you can’t ride, I can carry you.”

Hûnidark soberly reflects on the story. ”Well, Marko of Thurmaster, it’s possible Carlanis thought he’d be doing right... except he picked you because you and your friends looked like common men we’d mistake for guardsmen, not those thugs with their bows. Few men can spot a wytch or necromancer on sight, and Carlanis ain’t one of them. What he could spy was folks that might have purses fat enough to be worth stealing. He led you into banditry not heroics. Maybe you knew that, maybe you didn’t - the law will decide. But, you’d be a fool to follow his lead when you come before a magistrate. He’ll fit you for a noose just like he fit your friends for coffins.” He regards the bodies for a moment, noting the clean cuts... and frowns. After a moment, he makes sure Marko’s fetters are secured to the tree trunk and leaves the man to mourn his dead friends while he goes to strip Carlanis of his gear and valuables as well as retrieving Marko's dropped weapon. Hûnidark begins walking the prisoner over to the tree stump, where they can continue the interrogation with the others while sitting down. The half-orc very much wants to get out of the sunshine with his pounding skull and rest a bit. He listens to Marko’s tale and looks at the man closely. Hûnidark lightens his grip on the man’s throat immediately, more out of embarrassment at his momentary lapse of control than for any other reason. He nods, ”Accepted. Now, do you have any prisoners nearby, maybe in a hideout? Think hard. We’re turning you over to the law. Any help you give might lower your punishment. And letting some innocent die makes things far worse for you.” |
