Gritz is the truest example of the gods working in truly dumbfounding ways. Of all the creatures to spout the works of Shelyn, the last thing one would expect is a goblin.
A member of the Treestrider goblin tribe in Brinestump Marsh, Gritz had a fairly simple existence of scavenging, hunting, scarfing down anything he could get in his mouth, and training his pet goblin dog, Gubby. Nothing remarkable or interesting. It wasn't until a fateful trip to the Sandpoint dump that his life changed entirely. Laying discarded among the refuse was a picture book, dedicated to the images of Shelyn and her many works. But what intrigued Gritz was the image on the cover. As it turned out, the book was divinely possessed, with the image on the front reflecting whatever race found to be beautiful, masterful, and inspiring. And on this book, Gritz saw himself! Or at least, an idealized version of himself. Standing proudly on a hilltop, the clouds parting and light glistening behind him, Gubby at his side... and a curious looking weapon in his hands.
Fascinating by the book, Gritz took it back (thankfully, it lacked any words to scare him or the others off) and he looked through every page. He was awestruck by the images within, sights of glorious beauty and wonders unimagined! As if guided by divine knowledge, Gritz looked through and understood what exactly the book was explaining and what it was about: the glories of Shelyn and her teachings. He began trying to feebly recreate these images, trying to hook together junk that he found in a way that was worthy of representing these pictures... and each one a failure, in his his eyes at least. Nothing he made came even close to being considered something worthy of Shelyn's attention. He began to grow depressed, realizing that he could not produce anything worthy of the effort... and what was even worse, being the forgetful goblin that he was, he lost the book! (Or, more likely, another goblin stole it.) Now he didn't even have his precious guide to illustrate what he should be striving for!
Lost, without talent or inspiration, Gritz took to sifting less through the junk in the Sandpoint junkyard and more sitting depressed and saddened among the scrap. It wasn't until a few months ago that he came across his second divine intervention: one of his fellow goblins had yanked out a small, rusty glaive from a scrap heap... and it caught Gritz's attention, for it was this very weapon he saw himself carrying on the cover of his picture book! Tackling and wrestling the goblin before he could break it, Gritz took it for himself and swore to never see it broken by goblin hands!
At that moment, Gritz realized his purpose in life: if he could not make pretty things to honor Shelyn, than he would protect them, just as he did with this glaive! He would travel the world and protect the shiny and pretty things in them, encourage others to make the things he couldn't, and strive to become the hero he saw on the cover of his book!
Since finding his weapon, Gritz has been training with it, planning to set out to see the world and protect the pretty things out there. But before he could, he caught wind while sneaking around town that a new cathedral is going to be built to replace the old one that burned down... and this both inspires and worries him! He feels a need to stay around long enough to see the cathedral be built, but also worries that, with the big party the humans plan to throw, that his fellow goblins will try to ruin it! Thus, Gritz has chosen to postpone his Quest of Great Goodness to stay in Sandpoint a bit longer. Just to make sure everything is alright...
