Born in 4667 in Absalom into the Church of Iomedae, Iomar Youbol was the child of a pair of Mendevian Crusaders who left that demon-accursed land after the horrors of the Third Crusade. His mother, Aridia, was a battle-priestess, while his father Victran was a humble weaver. Iomar grew up among Iomedae’s faithful in the Ascendant Court district, where he demonstrated great charisma and leadership qualities early in life, as well as an oddly intuitive sense for things he shouldn’t really have been able to learn. These qualities, coupled with his strong sense of justice, sometimes led him into fights with other children. Such fights often ended in his victory, but only rarely without him being beaten badly first - it was his determination that won him fights, more than his skill. In his adolescence, Iomar began training as a holy warrior of Iomedae, and though she did not grant him spells or miracles, the young man never gave up the faith - if he was to serve without spells, then so be it. He would fight with blade and shield, armor and muscle. When the call came for the Fourth Mendevian Crusade, Iomar was twenty-five. The call signified to him that his time to serve the Inheritor had come, and he went north on pilgrimage to Mendev and its ever-furious foe, the Worldwound. In the next few years saw Iomar’s hair grow prematurely grey, for which he was nicknamed “Greyjay” by his fellow soldiers. Furthermore, he began to hear the clash of battle in his most peaceful moments, a torment of bloody visions and terrible battle. When he was thirty, he first manifested a miraculous ability to heal his comrades and to call upon the powers divine to clash with the demons. Ultimately, though, the war sickened him over its fifteen-year span. He persevered until the last passions petered out, at which point he resigned from the Crusaders and returned to Absalom, hoping desperately to find some measure of peace with the church there. As an oracle devoted to Iomedae, Greyjay (as he had begun to think of himself) was officially Fifth Sword Knight Iomar Youbol, and he strove to uphold that position with pride and justice. Even though dreams of demon’s claws and the terrible deaths of his comrades still haunted his nights, he took on tasks of charity and compassion… but the comparative pettiness and corruption in Absalom’s Church of Iomedae drove him further and further from his peers, especially the young and passionate sorts. In 4710, merely three years after returning from Mendev, Greyjay abandoned the church after they condemned his attempt to protect a Norgorborite against mob justice - not publicly, but in private. It was not the reprimand that troubled him - it was that it had been issued in private, for there was a need to be publicly neutral, despite their disagreement with his work. Infuriated at the political games, Greyjay left the church. Instead, he found a like-minded sort in the captain of the Graycloaks - the watch for the Ascendant Court. Joining up, he felt at home in some ways, once more. While his disdain for Iomedae and her church left him without their support, it did not strip him of his spells or intuition, both of which he used in service of the Guard. In 4719, he fought (along with much of the city) with the dead of the Whispering Tyrant’s attempt to seize the city of Absalom, where the song of true battle began to overwhelm him once more - he knew in his bones that he was made to fight, kill, and ultimately die. He hated it with every fiber of his being, but he did not falter. If he did not protect the innocent, who would? Just recently, with the formation of the Edgewatch, Greyjay was reassigned to the Precipice Quarter, where he hopes to protect and serve the people of both Absalom and those who seek to visit it and experience its wonders.
Quirks, Troubles, and Flaws:
Despite his best efforts, Greyjay cannot abandon his compassion or sense of right and wrong in favor of legal and illegal. Those who earn his sympathy find that he is far more lenient than he should be in his punishments, and he often speaks on their behalf to the courts if it comes to that.
While he has something of a heart of gold, Greyjay remains a grumpy, cynical old man who strives to be the best he can. Nothing irritates him more than people who glorify war - especially those who have never seen it themselves. Never a scholar, Greyjay is wary of, amazed by, and slightly envious of those who have studied more than him. On one hand, they may lack practical understanding of the impact their theories and beliefs have on the world. On the other, they have so much more knowledge than him, and in some ways, he wishes he could have learned some more scholastic subjects. Finally, Greyjay is also deeply scarred by the losses he saw when he was in Mendev, and some nightmares linger - though many have healed in the past decade. He might lash out against demon worshippers in particular, despite his training and best efforts to avoid doing so. Action Symbols:
◆◇↺ Botting Instructions:
Greyjay will generally try to intercept enemies from attacking his squishier comrades, followed by trying to put the hurt on them with his weapons and spells. Personally, I'd prefer that you only use cantrips if you need to bot me - but I'd really rather not use the Revelation spells, as that increases his curse intensity. At the beginning of battle, he may cast bless or call to arms, above. |
