    Our main love in RPGs is Fantasy so our game is fantasy at its core. With that said we want the game to be built on a chassis that has room for sci-fi elements to play a role. We're thinking about which kinds of races to add to that end, or whether to not pre-make races at all but instead have a list of a la carte add-on powers to create your own character from scratch. Those types of decisions we're still very much "on the fence" on. For now we're trying to focus on what the core math assumptions are, like what kinds of dice are used for skill tests, attacks, what kind of stats shall we use, etc.

    One neat concept we're working on is a sort of limited metacurrency that the players can opt to use (call it "Luck" for lack of a better term at this stage. Very similar to Hero Points in PF) to modify rolls, empower their attacks, or enable a better outcome. The trick is every time a players uses "luck" they have to pay a toll in the form of that same currency to the GM, a sort of "fate" pool. (We're calling it "pushing your luck" or "tempting fate") The GM can then use that pool to pull similar tricks against the party. We want to make it more dynamic and fun that this may sound, but its a work in progress.

    Big stuff. Overwhelming even. But for now it is still fun and interesting to us so we're moving forward!

    Happy 2018 everyone! Been missing you folks and the boards in general. And hey, Murassa's back too! I just wanted to pop in and say hello and hand out well-wishes.

    Two of my buddies and I are actually creating our own TTRPG right now. It is a lot of work but I think we have some awesome ideas! Maybe I'll recruit you guys as playtesters when the time comes.

  • Hello my friends,
    It is with a heavy heart that I have decided I need to pull away from the PbP forums at this time, and so I need to retire Grayface again.

    This is sudden, I know. I first want to say that you've ALL been awesome roleplayers and fun people to game with, and have made this game fun for me. Secondly, I would like to apologize for the abrupt pull out. In particular I want to apologize to Zed as the burden of working PCs in/out of the game falls up on the Gamemaster, and it isn't always easy or fun to hammer out the forced story change.

    In hindsight I believe I came back to the forums too quickly; I was searching for a crutch, a sort of distraction to keep my mind back on normal fun things that I love, diverting from the sadness that was (is) in my heart. It is now clear to me that I returned too early. My head is not where it needs to be to properly run a game or play in one. I am saddened but resolved to do the right thing for my own peace of mind.

    I hope you'll forgive me and maybe we can still be friends who game together again someday. Happy trails and full purses to you all.

The raging heart within the sword began to thud loudly, echoing the fast beating adrenaline-rushed heart that beat within Grayface's chest. The fighter moved right back along the path he had just used to retreat from the swarm, darting forward to engage the metal monstrosity with his hungry steel blade.

    Numerous were their number and their bites, easily overcoming the obstacles before them to reach at least one foe slow enough to remain in their path.   • GM Zed, the aquaponics tanks/pools pictured on the map make it unclear to me whether those spaces could be occupied normally for combat. The blue zone on the southeast corner of the room looks like a pool of water, and the green rectangle on the southwest corner might be one of those tanks you described.

    How deep is that pool? (Can one of us stand in it and still fight effectively?) Can someone fit in and fight from the square just to the left of Titania, in the lower corner of the tank? The reason I ask is maybe we could have a couple of flankers in those spots with one person (me or Titania probably) starting down the doorway to beckon the reclaimers into a flanking trap.

  • The scraping sound was awful on the ears and conjured all sorts of wild imaginings of what sort of being could create - and maintain - such a sound over the course of what was apparently decades or even centuries.

    Gray inclined the Steward upward to look it in the face.
    "That sound is the 'reclaimers'? How long have they been tearing at that door? Tell us what you know of them; anything that might aid us in battle against them if and when it comes to that."

  • He was no pervert but he certainly was a man, and a bold one at that. There was no doubt in his mind whether the girls would be a bit uncomfortable in the nude around him but he brushed it off, secure in the false equivalency that beautiful women made him squirm on the inside as well. He would not stare, nor would he avert his eyes completely.

A man of extremes, the volume of his laughter was typically disproportionate to the levity, as was his anger compared to a provocation.

    She was decidedly pretty in spite of the blood-caked hair; he was suddenly picturing her at ease in the finest of garb, twirling in some ballroom with highborn folk. On some level he would always feel like a low class schlub, especially in the presence of classy women such as these that he ventured with. Reminded of the truth they were equals in most ways that counted, he silently noted that he must try his best to put on a mask of indifference next time these feeling of inadequacy surfaced.

    Turning back to the situation at hand,
    "I don't believe it would be wise to go down that chute unless we had no other option, though the heat would likely not bother me. Have we finally reached the bottom of the Spire? I do not remember any other passages leading down or into other chambers."

  • Grayface hurried to Titania's side, kneeling down to lift her fallen form in his arms. Though she wore the platemail armor of a warrior, he gently cradled her like a child while the healing magic did its work. He watched as the most grievous wounds mended and ceased bleeding, then turned his gaze to her face, waiting for her to awake.

    "Titania? I've got you now."

    Seeing his companion-in-arms go limp in the creature's growing embrace was enough to dispel any notions of fighting defensively, deciding in favor of dishing out as much punishment as he could muster under the circumstances. If it could take out Titania it could take out any of us. His muscles clenched and heaved in perfect harmony, pulling his throbbing blade through the air in a dance of death.

    His blood surged with anger as he shrugged off the malicious attack. Here it was, the first battle to the death they would face at this level of the spire's depths, yet another bizarre monster that seemed capable of destroying them all given the chance.

    He brushed past Ea to get into position, standing at a flank opposite Titania's position. They would need every edge in this fight; the sound it made when it crashed into his friend was gut-wrenching, and it was clearly ready to dish out more.

  • His brow furrowed at the silent-but-previously-violent scene, then tightened more so at the 2' diameter chute in the wall.

    Grayface moved to the chute for a closer examination, waving his hand over the heat ripples to assess how hot the air was. He then lowered his head to see if any sounds were to be heard from the other end.

  • His big muscles were in desperate need of a soaking, though he would hardly consciously admit that fact to himself. He'd been on the road for weeks bringing bad news and battle to his foes, followed immediately by an equally extensive return trip that left his back and legs aching with every step. Never a man of leisure or excess, Gray's baths usually consisted of utilitarian hogfat soaps and cold water. The perfumed vapors wafting around this room were positively decadent as far as he was concerned.

    Gray tried to think of a witty comeback to Rallos' attempt at belittlement, but he landed on a generic jab at the tiefling's most apparent deformity.
    "Just make sure to wash that tail thoroughly."

  • Feeling a bit more optimistic at the notion of gaining the allegiance of the Emerald Soldiers, Grayface allowed himself to relax a bit. Doing his best not to notice any female nakedness - a best which wasn't perfect - he stood with his back to the pool, fully clothed, armed and armored. Duty and honor mattered more to him than the comforts that he admittedly coveted.

    "I will stand sentinel while you guys relax and cleanse your bodies."

  • Though it was somewhat abstract, the automatons finally spoke of a sort of violence. If they were capable of "redirecting this aggression" then they were capable of attempting harm upon the delving adventurers. Seeing Titania being ushered toward the dressing screen, Grayface hurried to her side, eager to intervene before something bad occurred.

    He placed a firm hand upon her shoulder, stopping her from going along the robot's desired path. He spoke firmly, leaving no room for ambiguity,
    "We do not want any services at this time."

    Grayface turned to Yasmin and raised an eyebrow as if to say What have we gotten ourselves into?.

  • Years ago Gray had awoken one night to the woman he had lain with rubbing his back in earnest, working out the tension he was so adept at retaining. After the briefest of protests he allowed himself to relax and let the woman work her strong hands through his muscles, finding it to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of his life...possibly more enjoyable than the relations the pair had the night previous. And so the warrior was damn tempted to cast aside his arms and armor for a spell in the scented hot waters followed by a deep-tissue massage from one that would not grow tired.

    Gray sampled the fruit, happy to enjoy fresh produce this time of year. What a marvel this entire set up was, replete with food and comfort of several varieties. Though the temptations were strong, his iron resolve kept him in the here and now, firmly aware that they were deep into dangerous territory.

  • Talking machines unnerved him and this particular machine seemed to be figuring out that the group was not its "patrons." Knowing that his mouth would likely get them all killed, he left this situation in more charismatic and capable hands by staying silent.

  • The automatic door mechanism, the rippling shadows along the walls, the painting of the dragon and wizard... such beauty, such wealth. The simple warrior was taken aback by the wonders around him.

    Why the nine hells would this be so far beneath the surface? Who...or what...lives here?

    The sudden activation and declaration of tea time struck the wonder right out of him and sent a shudder up his spine. Grayface was not expecting that to happen. He was about the yank his blade from the sheath but thought better of it; there was no apparent threat. He moved forward, staying close alongside Yasmin to defend her if it became necessary. When she played along with the notion of tea time, he smiled mischievously at her deceitful attempt to gain some semblance of understanding.

  • Gray's silly crush on the ice sorceress reared its ugly head again. He almost wished she would somehow fall so that he could fly up and rescue her, holding her tight in his notably powerful embrace. He half smiled at the idea, then shook his head to clear away such nonsense. She was his friend as were the others here, and they were counting on him to be ready for the serious contingency of a fall.

    The warrior kept a sharp eye on the area above, ready to help if/when it became necessary.

  • Grayface was utterly underwhelmed by Titania's dark secret. It saddened him to know that their world was so critical, so harsh to one such as she based on her heritage - a thing of which she had no control or input. He had grown up with nothing, from nothing, from a group of people who's status as property outweighed all other details like race or sex; anything else was peripheral and inconsequential. He looked at her no differently now than he had moments ago. If he had learned anything in his days it was to judge people on their actions, and thus far Titania was apparently a good and trustworthy friend, or so his friends had told him - and that was good enough.

    The relatively narrow chute wasn't as easy to fly within as the open lava chamber he had experienced last time. He did his best to keep his eyes and ears open while struggling with his magical flight limitations.

    He looked down the shaft, confident that he could make the climb but suddenly reminded of other myriad dangers they'd experienced along the way. It was a good idea to have Yasmin's suggested magical "safety-net."

In spite of the craziness he had witnessed it seemed far fetched, and yet he had little choice other than to believe it was truth. Grayface had heard of magic users that destroyed armies, led nations, and even pursued endless life... but time travel? He couldn't fathom the depths from which someone must draw their power to accomplish such a feat.

    The fighter examined his closed wounds and wiped the spilled blood from his shirt and armor, happy to be again in the company of such marvelous magic power - both divine and arcane. Seeing his friends together again, he knew they were capable of almost anything they set to task.

    "Guess I won't get to enjoy an ale next to hearth while admiring our dragon's head hanging at the Julliver any time soon. To the Spire then."

    He lifted the broken corpse and wiped the ancient bits of flesh off of his sword onto whatever strips of clothing remained intact, then wrapped his sword in leathers across his back with a look of determination.

  • Grayface lowered his pulsing blade when it was clear that the undead thing was no more. Dropping Gorloth's Fury into the snow he slumped forward with his hands on his knees to catch his breath, patting the hellknight on the back of her armor, then looked around to see the rest of his old friends.

    "Strange fortunes keep causing our paths to cross. Yes I was very successful. Not a single slave lord from the camp of my youth yet lives. The camps I found this time have been sacked, with every employee slain and every slave freed. There were no match for me, for they knew not the depths of my hatred for them and their masters. Like wheat before the scythe they fell." A strained half-smile cross his face at the fond memory. "Their coffers were emptied and given to the those who had earned the money. The belongings of the fallen were taken up by my freed brethren as well, though I did find some spoils of my own." He looked down admiringly at the breastplate he wore, gilded with gold and platinum accents with scenes of battle embossed on nearly every open space.

    "I arrived here some days ago but the gate watch denied me. They threatened to arrest me after I insisted they speak to the Lady Commander, and so I've camped out here while deciding what to do. I thought about scaling the wall with my grappling hook, but it was a foolish idea without knowing what was going on inside. This morning I decided to head toward the Spire in hopes of finding you all outside the Fort's walls, and I am glad that I did."

    When he heard Murassa's fate a shadow darkened his brow, which deepened with the news of Royst's disappearance. "There is work to be done then," was all he managed to offer in spite of his more complex inner feelings on the matters.

    He turned toward the hellknight woman, the one who had essentially taken his place when he was called away to action. He studied her but gave up on the scrutiny in favor of simple logic - she was here, she was with his friends, and she was doing battle alongside them. That was what mattered. If they trusted her then so would he.
    "Well met, again."

    At level 9 we are now able to have one of the two options:

  • Two attuned weapons with +1 enhancement bonus on each
  • A single attuned weapon with +2 enhancement bonus

    The same goes with armors/shields. We can have one of these two options:

  • It just occurred to me that I should point out that I bought some Feather Step Slippers, allowing me to ignore difficult terrain, which allows me to take 5' steps in the snow. FYI.

    Also I have no idea what kind, if any, of DR this bad guy has, but my weapon is at +4 enhancement while raging in case this changes anything. (which I think means it can overcome silver, cold iron, and adamantine DR)

  • The lesser foes that lay crumbled at his feet were little more than gnats, though this cold dead lord was something else entirely. The biting cold! The unworldly strength! Grayface saw his lifeblood sprayed upon the pure white snow below him, steaming in the cold air.

    He used the pain to set off his inner fire, prompting him to heights of fury that allowed him to endure significant pain - and he knew more pain was coming. The sudden crunch crunch of footfalls in snow cut through the din of his wall of anger - His minions are surrounding me.

    But it was no minion of this undead lord - it was his friends! What luck had brought them together at this moment he may never understand, but he made a mental note to offer a generic prayer of thanks when he got the chance.

  • That sounds awesome! I love Dark Sun. I fell in love with the setting in '95 when a new friend introduced it to our group and ran a short campaign.
