Going with Thief racket, 18 Dex, 16 Chr. Let's me trip, feint, cast a spell, demoralize, or just attack depending on the situation. Also love the unorthodox combination of rapier and kukri (which I'll envision as some over-engineered knifey-thing) to fit the flamboyant and eccentric persona of the character. Glad I reached out to the community. I came up w/ this character concept before I had even heard of Pathfinder. Cool to him come to life mechanically in a way that looks to be pretty viable in game. Thanks all!
I am working resurrecting a character I played PF1 . He's human rogue raised a gnome organized crime family.. Whereas in 1st edition the gnome thing was mostly about flavor, there are some interesting mechanical things to do with the adopted ancestry feat. For this character, i'm considering gnome weapon familiarity, which gives training and access to kukri, glaive and gnome weapons. And/or a familiar down the road with the animal accomplice ancestry feat. He'll be Rogue who takes Bard dedication, so assume I'll have at least 14 CHR for all builds. Question I'm having is whether to lean more into feinting or tripping, given that kukri has the trip weapon quality. The options I'm considering are: Scoundrel racket. Prioritze Cha for feints and Dex. Dump Str. Forget about gnome weapon feat or kukris.
I guess the main question is whether trips or feints are generally better in combat for a rogue. (this is for PFS btw.) And whether kukris and the trip weapon quality, while flavorful, is worth the investment for trip build. Scoundrel really fits my concept for the character but I read on another thread it's not very good...
Very helpful -- thanks everyone. Also the rules for somatic components say "You can use this component while holding something in your hand, but not if you are restrained or otherwise unable to gesture freely." So I should be good to go with casting spells even with shield and longsword.
Working on my first PF2 character for PFS. The versatility of bards is appealing, but I don't want to necessarily play the 'Face' role at the table. So thinking take Enigma bard and go high strength, and low charisma for more of a smart gish build. Pick buffing type spells that don't require a save like magic weapon. The later class feats for bard are limited and don't seem that exciting. So I'm looking for some advice on dedications. Fighter seems the obvious choice. True strike+ power attack with a bastard sword, or shield cantrip+aggressive block feat looks fun. But what about barbarian? It seems very few spells have concentrate tag so I'm not sure what the downside is there with the rage action. Finally was looking at ranger, or even alchemist but those seem like weaker options. I suspect I might be overlooking something with this approach. Thoughts on dedications? Is having low CHR a bad idea?
Thanks everyone -- really good ideas both for mechanics and this helped hone in on RP ideas. I like the notion of this character being a failed caster. Not charming enough to be a proper bard, or too clumsy to be a proper wizard and can only reliably pull off non-somatic spells. Magic stuff is mostly to be helpful in out of combat situations. Also thinking it makes more sense to get Improved Trip at 1 and grab TWF instead of Shield Slam at Slayer/Ranger 2.
I want to build a shield and flail melee fighter, a bit inspired by the Conqueror class from For Honor. I also liked the idea of a having a dip as an arcane caster for RP reasons, and to have more options in and out of combat. This is for PFS and I don’t think this would go past level 4-5. I was planning on taking two levels of slayer to get the shield slam early. And taking taking a level or two of siegebreaker fighter for the bull rush, overrun add ons. So a kind of bashy, tanky, somewhat brainy fighter who occasionally busts out a spell like Blade Lash or True Strike seemed fun to play, if not optimal. Question is, what is the best caster dip? I considered Bard Archaeologist or Arcane Duelist, but didn’t think the spell list was very complementary. I’m trying to figure out if I should go straight Magus, Skirnir, or perhaps Armored Battlemage. I’m also wondering if Quick Draw feat + Quickdraw shield is worth the feat when I want to cast or two-hand a weapon, or better just drop the shield/weapon? (Can a Skirnir cast with a shield and weapon in each hand?) Current build thoughts:
Slayer 1: Power Attack; Quick draw (?)
Any thoughts would be appreciated! |
