Background
Garvus Mendelheim is a third-generation guard and citizen of the City of Korvosa. Born into a guard family, Garvus signed up the day that he turned eighteen and knew that there was no other place in society that he would want to be. From day one, Garvus was a model guard. Many criminals attempted to corrupt him but none succeeded, and his arrest record read like a list of Who’s Who in the Korvosan underground.

By the age of twenty-three, Garvus had been made a Sergeant and had began to rub shoulders with the upper middle class of Korvosa’s society and it was here that he met his wife. She was Amelia, the second daughter of a wealthy merchant who saw their marriage as an excellent way to lend his own reputation credence while his daughter would have a safe family life. They spent a year courting and were then married in the Temple of Abadar. They moved into a small townhouse that Garvus bought with his savings.

Life for Garvus and Amelia was good, and their happiness increased when, shortly before Garvus’ twenty-eighth birthday, Amelia gave birth to a daughter. Garvus thought his life was complete, but little did he know that it was about to be brutally ripped apart.

Shortly after his daughter’s fourth birthday, Garvus and his men began to investigate a petty criminal by the name of Gaedren Lamm. Apparently, Gaedren had been operating for years without surfacing but his involvement in a burglary had brought his name across Garvus’ desk and thus Garvus began to chase him down.

Garvus soon realised that Gaedren is a competent criminal as he manages to evade captures for several months. Garvus’ only link to Gaedren was a petty criminal who had been in Gaedren’s employ. While moving the criminal between the prison in which he was being held and the guard offices, an assassin managed to shoot the criminal in the throat with a poisoned crossbow bolt. Despite their best efforts, the criminal expired and so did Garvus’ only lead.

Angered by Gaedren’s audacity, Garvus continued to pursue him. Three months after the criminal had been assassinated, Gaedren kidnapped Garvus’ daughter. Enraged, Garvus hounded Gaedren relentlessly but his actions were to no avail. Six weeks after she was kidnapped, Garvus’ daughter was found near the river. Before she had died, she had been starved and beaten. Garvus flew into an apoplectic rage. For days he stalked the streets of Korvosa, seeing Gaedren in the shadows and lashing out at anyone who came near him. Eventually the guard were forced into action and they arrested him, although they had to beat him into submission.

Garvus’ grief over his daughter was compounded when he found out that while he had languished unconscious in jail, his wife had taken her own life, unable to face the reality of the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death.

Eventually Garvus was released and he returned to the townhouse that had once been his home. A deep depression settled upon him and he sold the house, giving the money to the owner of a small, rundown tavern on the provision that Garvus was given a room and allowed to drink whenever he wanted. The barkeep agreed, reasoning that Garvus would probably be dead inside a year.

Fifteen years later, Garvus is a dishevelled, unkempt mess. He still lives in the tavern, often the object of hushed ridicule and scorn. His desire for revenge died out long ago, quenched by the vast amounts of alcohol he has consumed since those fateful days. Now, he works as an enforcer when he can and a street fighter when he can’t. Over the years, he has saved enough to purchase some leather armour and a hefty club just in case he ever gets the chance to face Gaedren but that chance seems remote, at best.
