Background:
Garland's earliest memories were of the coven. At that point in time, she knew nothing of her real mother and only knew of Holly Laakerntzen as her sole parent. Of course, they weren't alone. Garland grew up knowing nothing of the world that wasn't shown to her by the sisters of the coven, her coven. They referred to themselves as the Rime Child Coven. While it was normal to Garland, this coven was very unique. The sisters of the Rime Child Coven always seemed to be with child.
Through her early years, Garland would assist Holly in caring for the pregnant sisters, even having opportunities to watch and assist in the very ritualistic birth rites. These were the happy times. She also recalls the not-so-happy times. These dark times saw the sisters using their considerable magics on these newly birthed infants. To what end...she was not sure. She would never assist in these rituals. Instead, she would find ways to comfort the children and attend to them when she could sneak a moment away from the sisters.
As she aged, Garland realized that she was not like the other children or the other witches. Her skin was much paler, her hair much darker. She could feel the cold inside her, but she knew it was something darker. Garland fought against this rising tide of darkness and cold within herself. But this did not go unnoticed. Holly and the other members of the coven tried to coax the darkness to the surface. They knew something she had yet to figure out: Garland was the offspring of the founding Hag of the coven, a winter hag known only as Minii.
While Garland still didn't know the full truth, she knew she could not stay with the coven anymore. While her blood tried to fight it, she was a good person. She waited for several months and planned her escape. After what felt like a second lifetime, the opportunity came and Garland took it. While the coven was performing one of their perverse infant rituals, Garland ran. She didn't know where she was running to, but she followed her instincts.
After several days of looking back but always looking forward, she found herself on the outskirts of a town, Heldren. By this point, Garland was only 17, a mere child, really. While Heldren did not immediately pose a threat, she hid on the outskirts for several weeks. It wasn't until she saw an old crone in the wood, searching for herbs, that she even made contact. This old crone just happened to be Old Mother Theodora, the town's widwife. While this term meant nothing to Garland, as she talked with and befriended Theodora, she understood where she could fit it.
While Garland certainly did not follow all the lessons of Theodora, she came to see the aging woman as the mother she always needed. Theodora, for her part, treated Garland not only as a valued apprentice, but as a friend, as well. Over the years, Theodora taught her everything she knew and Garland expanded upon those teachings with the mysterious power that her blood and the coven passed on to her. Instead of herbs, Garland started dabbling into alchemy to get the same ends as Theodora. But this did not settle well with her mentor. Certain mysteries are meant to stay as such.
As Garland's power and alchemy grew stronger, the two midwives drifted farther apart. By this point, Garland has established herself as a healer and midwife with the people of Heldren; she has her own home and her own clients. But, it is just a matter of time before Theodora's concerns get the better of her and Garland is forced to move on from her adopted home.
