The Story of Galatea Rayven:
Galatea Gunray, her real name, is the daughter of Nute Gunray, former head of the Trade Federation and separatist leader murdered by Darth Vader at the end of episode 3. Galatea was the favourite of her father, he saw her as the brightest and most ambitious of his five children and suitable to succeed him as head of the Trade Federation. Galatea followed Newt's career with a daughter's loving eyes and lack of objectivity. Newt told her a lot of "his" accomplishments, including much that was supposed to be secret. Much of her childhood was spent in Newt Gunray's Citadel. Galatea was present when Republic forces, led by Jan Dodonna and Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, laid siege to the citadel, hoping to trap Gunray inside. Galatea, her mother and siblings fled when the citadel was breached, separately to Newt. Earlier, an ally of Newt's named Kactil had met his wife and family. Kactil was force sensitive and a member of a force tradition. He told Newt that Galatea was force sensitive and offered to train her. Newt told Kactil he would consider it and then avoided him. Newt did not completely trust Kactil and in any event had no intention of having his daughter taken away by him. From this time on the Gunrays used Newt's great political and financial influence on Neimoidia to keep track of when and where representatives of the Jedi were looking for young potential Jedi. They then kept Galatea well away from them and the Jedi never had any reason to suspect Galatea even existed. After the death of Newt Gunray at the end of the Clone Wars the Gunray family fell apart. Newt's wife fell into despair which lead to alcoholism and an addiction to death sticks that eventually killed her. Some of Galatea's siblings also experienced similar signs of despair in their lives, though most have recovered and none died. Adding to the troubles following their father's death, other Neimoidians tried to defraud them of their father's property. Galatea and her siblings were forced to fight legal and corporate battles against those who would rob them of their inheritance. Eventually successful legal action, negotiations and a couple of murders lead to an end to these attempts at fraud. While much of Newt Gunray's wealth, including most of it held off Neimoidia, has gone, the family remains wealthy. It was at this time Galatea began to receive help from her father's spirit. In an erratic and unreliable way the ghost aided his daughter with visions of what lay behind material objects, premonitions of the future and even occasionally moving small objects to aid her. This is in fact untrained force ability, but Galatea has no idea about that and keeps it totally secret lest people think she is crazy. After doing what she could to consolidate her families wealth and deal with the fallout of Newt's death, Galatea has left Neimoidia to get investigate events surrounding her father's death. This is when she adopted the fictional name Rayven. Galatea does not use the name Gunray and carries nothing identifying her by her real name. Galatea was told things supposed to be secret by Newt and was given hints at others. She knows of the Jedi's role in the siege of Naboo and knows their were powerful actors working behind the scenes. But she lacks details. Galatea is certain her father was murdered. As the Empire seemed to benefit by the destruction of the Trade federation she holds that body responsible. Galatea knows that the Trade Federation's accounts were plundered by Imperial financier and former Federation employee Arsin Crassus and intends to track him down and ... persuade him to give her some answers. She also is near certain Palpatine had some, probably major, role in these events. Galatea does not know anything about the role of the Sith or that it was Anarkin Skywalker a.k.a. Darth Vader who murdered the leaders. Galatea seems to be a very accomplished, mature and self confident young lady, She usually appears composed and likes to be in control of events. But the surface is misleading, there is much conflict beneath. Galatea was raised as her father's daughter, even more the ruthless, untrustworthy, predatory businesswoman than a typical Neimoidian. However, the fallout of her fathers death is pulling her in other, contradictory, directions. Galatea is angry and naturally wants revenge. Her fathers biography teaches her that might is right, there is no such thing as justice and only a fool trusts others. Put simply, it is leading her to the dark side. However, by nature and temperament Galatea is not cruel or villainous. She sees in the history of the Trade Federation many mistakes and ethical defects. She, quite rightly, holds the Empire responsible for her fathers death and wants revenge. It would be natural for her to join the Rebellion, Galatea is under no delusion she can bring down the Empire by herself. Just how the young Neimoidian will turn out remains undetermined. She could follow the light or dark side or steer an independent course. The appearances of her father's ghost sometimes make her worry about her sanity. Galatea does not know she is force sensitive or have any real idea what that means. It is possible she may seek Jedi training if and when she discovers the truth. Galatea has come to Sel Zonn station, far above the world of Brentaal, as part of her investigations of the events surrounding her fathers death. Her detective work have uncovered leads that must be pursued at the space station. |
