As I had a long post prepared and my computer crashed...I will now be slightly lazy
Mayor The Mayor runs past Noro and the Sheriff and goes to the butcher block by the sink and pull a cleaver from the wood and stands over Lou waiting to see if any goblins come to attack the helpless Lou.
Bale Lights his pipe with the snap of his fingers and sits back to watch the show. Turns to one of his wild eyed table companions and says' "This younger generation is.. feisty to say the least. Dontcha think?"
Rohan you posted out of initiative order, so I will advise everyone to ignore the error this time please. I also ask that you wait for your segment in initiative order before posting during combat please, Rohan. Thank you.

Some questions on this aggro/combat method.
- How does it work with AoE spells? Say Rhasa casts Ice Storm on a group of enemies. Are they suddenly mine to deal with for actions because Rhasa drew the aggro upon herself?
- How does one pull aggro from another (e.g. assuming the above is true: Rhasa casts Ice Storm aggroing a group of enemies. How can the others prevent the group from ignoring them and attacking her)? Is the tank's "taunt" an AoE effect or just vs. one opponent?
- What happens when party members want to focus on the same enemy (e.g. enemy #2 is wounded by Adrien so Talon decides to attack the same enemy in hopes of dispatching them [and Talon's action could interrupt the enemy action that Adrien may have posted during his action])?
Ok I knew I liked all of you for a reason. Keep me on my toes!!!
In your example, if a tank or some other person has not aggro'd them first? Congo Ratz!! Welcome to why you don't flame large groups of evil minions when you are a glass cannon. It goes in the bad idea column. Wait for the tank to catch aggro or focus on mobs you can handle. If a Tank uses the Taunt option it will depend on how he taunts. Wow me with good role play and even Copper will beat on said tank. I kid Drake. But it's about good rp. As to what mechanics I am using to limit it?
Spoken: Has to be heard and understood
Visual: Has to be seen and understood
Remember the rule I set forth requires a skill check. I am going to allow either Bluff or Intimidate. But to use the skill you must do something. Whatever that is will determine range and so forth. So make sure the taunted opponents can see and hear you. Otherwise, its like picking a fight. How worked up can you get the other guy? If calling his mother a cripple who rolls around in a wheelchair don't do it.....find out what will...(Insulting ones parentage not always. Insulting a males package...9 times outta 10). All in all I will let common sense reign and if it doesn't...well that's why I am the rules judge too :P
In your second example: Adrien's action happened first. So his stands. Talon must write accordingly if he wants to attack that mob. And then Adrien must respond. Sure this could result in tug of wars, but this is why I asked the pre-madonnas to check their luggage at the door. If you want to showboat. Do so. Just don't step on your teammates toes to do so.
In all, just assume what has been written cannot be unwritten. That way when it is your turn you have the spotlight, and as long as we remember it's about the party and not the individual...I can assure you that, you will see good posting and team work.
Talon Eldercourt wrote:
Another question on combat - should we just assume average hit points or roll for the monsters total?
Ok to Talon, Noro, and who the heck let Elwyn in here? Just Kidding :P
Um, if I vary from the posted stats on the PFSRD I will tell you. Otherwise assume EXACTLY what is in the entry. The Warchanters, & Gobos on Horseback I realize I did not post so I will get that up now
The actual NPC's in the mix? If you attack them....wait for a response. I only use the aggro rules for combat for grunts, toadies, evil minions, etc. You will always be notified of a non-evil minion by the fact that they have actual names...not gobo #4, or just "the gobo". I will tell you his name is Snubnose Wisekrakenhut. Snubnose Wisekrakenhut is a guard for Chief Fatguyinalilkoot. Anytime you get a name...WARNING NPC DO NOT ACT FOR
I hope this clarifies what I left out. Thank you for continuing to ask questions and keep me on my toes. I will continue to keep working on my end too :)
Brief snippet from my past:

Rysil: That's why TSR made Dracoliches. *Drinks coffee*

Ok folks I have the goblins up and Belor. Talon you're up. I apologize again for slow posting but my internet is not cooperating like I would prefer, but I am working on it.

Goblins(Tsuto's group 2)
The Goblins coming through the front door howl with glee even in the brightness of the daylight now in the room, but the lil monsters scramble across the floor of the Dragon like crazed butchers wielding dogslicers with glee. As Talon comes to the defense of AMieko the lil buggers swarm towards them clambering to get past Talon and trying to stab Amieko with their vicious weapons.
Talon you currently have three goblins in front of you and the rest are lined up in a cross formation between you and the rest of the party.
Goblins(Lyrie's group 1)
The three goblins holding flaming torches charge the back door to the common room avoiding the charging sheriff and try to sqeeze through all at once looking all to comical. The two riding goblin dogs charge towards the sheriff leveling their horsechopper's and kicking their dogs with wild abandon screaming goblin curses as they fly towards the huge Shaonti Tribesman.
Goblin Warchanters(both groups)
The two female goblins begin to jump and gyrate spinning whips in large circles around them as they spit and curse out their ribald rhyme
"Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!
Goblins race and goblins jump.
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!
Chase the baby, catch the pup.
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins! You be food!"

Until then Combat is gonna have to wait unless one of my aforementioned alternates wants to run the goblins amuck and have them try and capture Ameiko or the Mayor or both.....ok who didn't see that coming?

Well I'll give it a shot. It just means it'll be hard to post my turns from work since my breaks are really short and my phone is crap. But I'll try.
I wouldn't sweat it to much. All you are doing really is just watching for your turn to come up in initiative. Then post when you actually have time. Wait till you get home or when you don't have to rush it on your phone. Remember it is still only a once a day posting requirement and I am not even going to enforce that to hardcore myself considering what I have just been through. Also keep in mind that if you don't like it I did offer the option of going to a more traditional method. I am not inflexible. I did just make this up. So if it doesn't work I am easily willing to scrap it.
Think of it this way. You get the freedom to run your opponent to the ground with your personal writing style instead of waiting even longer for me to do it.
I should also refer you to the above edited post about aggro. It will help to know what to do and how to act a bit better in combat. You especially as a Tank role should enjoy the ability to taunt and grab up opponents to save your fellow party members. Not to mention with Copper you two could double team the heck out of some bad guys and subdue more of them at once. Thus allowing your more powerful damage dealing allies to then take them down.
WoW I spent way to long doing raids and battles in MMOs, yikes.

Interesting way to do combat. So you want us to do that until the enemy each of us is fighting dies?
I just made it up :P
This being only my second honest attempt at board GMing I wanted something that felt heroic and let you guys shine both as individuals and as a group. I thought since you folks had developed some synergies already that this lil flare would help you to unload and focus on your target in a fun writing style, while adding some weight to the players and off a somewhat stressed GM. If it does not work we can return to a more traditional style. So yes, think of your targets as having sticky Aggro. Once you have an opponent like a goblin, it will stick with you until you kill it, stun it, tame it, or whatever. Now no one started as a Monk but I could see Noro going monk levels if she wasn't a Barb. With feats you can get Stunning fist. This means if you stun an opponent or in some way reset aggro is the only way to drop an opponent. The ways to do this without dropping an opponent to zero are as follows:
Any status effect which prevents a target from consciously being aware of its aggro'd opponent will reset it's aggro.
Aggro: is defined as aggression from an opponent directed at a specific target.
In the case of this game Aggro will be set when any PC or NPC targets any unammed NPC opponent and engages it in threatening manner. Yes this means you get aggro if you just threaten someone. So be careful. This can also be useful to the Tanks as they can hold unnamed opponents easier by attacking large groups who will maintain aggro on the opponent who attacked them first. This is great for flankers and Rogues as it means the lil beasties won't turn on you because you did the most damage. Also a word to Adrien and Noro Especially. Due to the way I am handling aggro, you also can use either the Bluff or Intimidate skills to "Taunt" an opponent. A taunt DC will be Based on the Targets Will Save + 10. I was thinking of making Taunt a feat in which you can even effect Named NPCs as well, but I am not sure how unbalancing that would become.
Talon & Adrien : No need to rush. Take your time. Your GM has become a lot more lax in his posting requirements for some bizarre reason...*snort*
Seriously tho. Lets just have fun. I will do my best storytelling and you folks do your best party heroism. Other than that lets not take it so serious. I think that was my fault. God personally removed that stick from my ass recently....you should thank him :P
Male Would appear to be Human in his late 60's but in good shape & good health "Is this thing recording?"
Ok Adrien Run everyone's Initiatives and then I want to see you all post in order of initiatives like I said in Discussion.
NPC Initiative bonuses:
Belor is +3 Init
Mayor is +2 Init
Ameiko is +3 Init
Aldern is +0 Init
Bale is +9 Init
All Gobos are +6 Init
Lyrie +2 Init
Tsuto +3 Init
Have fun and if an NPC should post before you Just skip them and post as long as they are not an opposing combatant.
As to all of your actions I see nothing wrong with any of them. Please continue. If I am gone a day or two I give GM powers to move the story along to Adrien and Zel. That means if you really need to push it along and I am gone like before. Go spoiler yourself on the Module notes if you know them or have them. And RP according to how you think said NPC would react. If either of you does not want this position then elect two people among yourselves for the honor. If I am too slow or life keeps me from posting I fully trust this group to handle themselves as you have impressed me as adults so far.
As to the appearance of Tsuto and Lyrie:
WARNING Spoiler alert!:
If you read the module you know I am running this outside the posted events of the module. I chose to do it this way for my own reasons, but suffice it to say that Neither of these two fights to the death. They will flee the moment they feel threatened. Treat them as one hit wonders.
Sheriff & Mayor will protect each other and Ameiko if they can, but the sheriff will fight to the death to protect The mayor above everyone else.
Aldern is an idiot and a buffoon nobleman that cannot really defend himself and is in a panic to save his dog which the goblins have already killed.
If the PC's make it into the streets they see goblins EVERYWHERE. There are about 40 goblins in total all over Sandpoint. The militia is doing it's best and will have (unaided)run the goblins out of town and subdued most of the fires started by Dawn. For the most point the goblins in town are a distraction.
as of Round 7 Shalelu Andosana has arrived with two militia in tow and any goblins left will fall to her and these two guards in a round.
If the PCs route the two groups at the bar you may assist in running the goblins out of town and putting out fires. Fires can be extinguished with 4 gallons of water easily most times as the goblins really aren't that bright and the people of Sandpoint are not cowards. Feel free to include random unnamed NPC's at this point or introduce possible candidates for the leadership feat. Most of these people are the equivalents of 1st level warriors as they have been fighting for this town for a long time. Also if you look at the Bar I have placed tokens of a wide variety of NPCs. None of them have stats or backgrounds except the Bartender.
The Bartender is a man by the name of Earl and for some reason has just the oddest luck. He can never be hit. Like literally you cannot hit him. Treat his AC (Normal, Touch, & Flat-footed) as 400. If you can find a way to crunch those numbers and break my game then I bow to you as a Munchkin among Munchkins. Earl essentially functions as a 20th level Monk Pacifist with an AC that is higher than the Divine. (It's a quirk of fun based on the scene from the Great Race with Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis. If you know the scene I am referring to then you get how this is funny. If you don't go rent a very old movie and prepare to laugh. Just imagine all hell breaking lose and when the dust settles here is a guy totally unfazed and unharmed.)
Anything more ask me. I posted this here so that those of you who want to write yourselves as slightly clairvoyant or just want to have a lil fun with being a hero you may. Just please keep in mind that with a lot of freedom to do what you please comes the request that you share the spotlight with your fellows. That said, have fun and kick some goblins ass!!!

The goblins in the first group replace their Short Bows with Torches that have the same stats as the short sword, but do have a chance to cause flammable objects to ignite.
Torch +1 (1d4/x2 + dc 12 Ref or take 1d4 fire the following round with usual rules for extinguishing fire)
Sorry for that I wanted to edit but it would not let me.

Thank you folks. I appreciate it.
To the Combat situation.
Since we seem to be a decent group of individuals who understand and grasp the game let me explain.
On the map you have 4 circles representing the spell "BlackLight" It creates "MAGICAL" Darkness. It allows the caster to see through it but not much else. It is thwarted by Daylight, but otherwise works like I have indicated from the beginning.
The attack you are facing is obviously from Goblins
Inits will be handled once Talon has had a chance to fully indicate his surprise round actions as the gobos and darkness just "Poof" out of nowhere into the crowded bar. Anyone with Spellcraft or Knowledge:Arcana checks can try and guess at what is going on magically, but likely unless you smack it out of the park with a 25+ roll...your character will be scratching it's head.
When it comes to combat, I am not going to hide stats from you. If you don't want to play IC and use the OOC knowledge IC? Up to you. If that's fun for you, then by all means. Just don't ruin anyone else's fun is all I ask.
Ok when I get ready to post combat I will post the vitals for the combatants. Normally the DM runs all the monsters and such for combat, but I know you are all capable adults now, and I want you to handle you own combats.
What this means:
If you attack a combatant I want you to take that combat from beginning to end. So it will look like this
Attack on Goblin #1:
I swing my fists into the goblins tiny little body 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 121d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 (After I type this I hit preview to see my rolls and write accordingly) The little goblin ducks and dodges my fists not allowing me to connect.
Goblin: The goblin tries to swing his torch at me as I close with my fists 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13 (Preview again)and misses me as I turn the torch aside and come in for the next blow.
Each of you can see from the example a very very basic example of what I expect from you. I want you to handle all of your actions in combat this way. If you aid another player you must state your action and roll any dice you need to hit and damage. Basically write your own heroic perspective of combat. Follow the dice like normal, but remember...write like this is a movie and the "Party" are the main Heroes. Write like it's Hollywood. If you want to bounce of the balcony railing, swing from a chandelier, and dive straight down to impale a goblin from above? GREAT!!! Awesome, just make two acrobatics rolls and add a +1 to hit in addition to charging. If you want to do something...think about what rolls you would ask for as a DM. Then write accordingly. Unless something is over the top wrong I will likely let you have your fun.
The main thing to remember is to follow initiative order.
Adrien:
Since you posted inits for everyone I want you to post again and be our time keeper. I also want you to post first after I call for combat to start. This means that you have a small gift. You always go first. For whatever reason we come up with IC, Adrien is never caught totally unaware. This means whatever the highest init is....Adriens is 1 point better. This way if I am unable to post I have someone to help keep combat moving. You only get this bonus however if you are conscious. You only get it in Normal rounds not the surprise round unless you are laying an ambush. Ok, but the down side is I will post init mods to you for the combatants and you must roll for them as well.
Use some common sense and try to act as if what has been posted ahead of you in combat HAS happened already. Try to learn how to compliment each others actions. Stay on target. Stick with your opponent until subdued (Remember that in pathfinder a combatant is not dead until they have gone into negative numbers equal to their Constitution Score, NOT MODIFIER). If you do not play accordingly...you may find clerics and healers way more annoying than you thought.
I am sure we will run into situations where I will need to be Judge and arbiter, but I am sure we can make this work.
Ok folks I have laid out the map to start. I will only do that for the beginning of combat and then we can write what happens after. Just try to have fun.
The two I left unmentioned are Main NPCs and I will handle their actions plus those of the other NPCs. If you engage one of them, do not take control of combat as I will take a more active role for them. I will sometimes let you know to handle them and then give you stats privately.
If you must Identify them as a target The woman leading the northern group is

I have not read any messages on the boards. I am tired and worn out at the moment. I have been through a lot since that last post and my lil two day flu was like gnat fart in a hurricane. I am gonna leave it at that. I will just say that I have been through a lot of extremely stressful and trying circumstances that demanded I not even think about touching a computer.
I am back with much apology and remorse for leaving, what I considered, the best group I have had in years high and dry like I very sternly asked you all not to do and I ejected Noro over....oh the irony. So yes, Noro I have not read your posts, but a certain lil birdie told me you really want to play still. Yeah like I am gonna be a hard ass now...uh huh...and suddenly the group disappears and I get like 7 "Kick Me" signs on my Blazer? Yeah, not this GM.
SO. I will be still dealing with the fact that my home disappeared out from underneath me and I must now move house. It will be about a week or so before I am regular daily poster again (Which sucks big time). If you all decide to tolerate me just a bit longer and hang in there I will do my best to make this worth it for you.
I will do my reading tonight and tomorrow morning if I can. I will post in Discussion for rulings if you need them, but NPC Posting will be slower as I won't have the necessary time or Mental capacity for about a week.
Once again I apologize. Life is a bugger. I am still breathing. So lets get back to the business of living shall we?
In the words of Jason Mewes "Carpe Diem, B#%@*es!!"
Here is the layout for the surprise round. I know you are all anxious to go do your thing in this whole endeavor, but let me show you how posted combat works for my game.
1. Surprise Round (Roll Init if you are not surprised)
2. Roll Initiatives
3. I will post all Initiatives for all combatants
4. You post in order of Initiative (This is the reason for daily posting)
5. Return to Step 3 and repeat Until Combat is finished.
I only roll once for initiative and add a full round action to the list of possible actions called "REFOCUS". Refocus lets you spend your turn waiting to act so you may act first on the following round. You Must Declare it on your turn though. No waiting to see what happens till the end of the round and then hopping in. Also, You will always know if you get to roll Initiative for the Surprise round because I will make sure you know like I did with Talon.
Ok Folks sorry for the quirky going but I know I am a quirky DM, but if you stick around I hope to make it worth your while.
Oh and Drake...your Character Pic was not quite the thing I was looking for so I slotted you one in the Combat layout. Tell me if you like it.

I don't give a flyin'flip who you are. If you roll a 28 for perception in total darkness....your ears work just fine.
So you can sense that from the entrance of the Dragon comes the scurrying of little feet and what sounds like the muffled sound of hideous squeeky laughter trying to be suppressed. You also smell and hear torches burning. Your best Tactical guess is that the bar is being swarmed from the front by more than a dozen small individuals no larger than children carrying torches.
But this guy rolled an 18 Charisma, and Talon is sitting at a 10 so ...

I ask the forgiveness of my players for a day or so. I am having so real life issues that might require me to be a sporadic poster for a few days, but you will at least know that I am reading as I will post here at least once and in the Gameplay thread to keep it moving. But it will NOT be at break neck speed. I never intended this to be break neck. If you expect a round of combat done in a day then....LMFAO...ok it's not Rifts...but it could take a bit. I put the "Once Per Day" requirement on here because I can't promise more than that on some days. As long as we all get it, and the fact I am not actually ignoring any of you out of malice. Let me tell you how I touch everything here.
I wake up and spend time with family

Post to the boards and reply to email
Go to work
Take breaks throughout the day and check boards (Reading at the very least)
Try to post at least one more time before sleep (Optional)

But that is why I don't expect any more out of you. Relax. Take it easy. The board will still be here tomorrow. Don't worry. Be happeh! (Sorry bad reference. BAD DM! BAD DM! No Cookie for joo!)
Anyways to answer some above questions:
Talon:
This is a scene opener. This means anything could, can, and likely will happen. Don't walk into any situation unprepared in my games. As the DDS (OMG You're freaking Dentist LMFAO) You need to find your level of comfortable paranoia.
Zelaria:
I approve your connection to Belor. Belor is a tough but kind hearted man with a soft spot for the different or weird...and if they are female and young he definitely has a fatherly spot in his soul because he is almost 40 and still single despite many attempts to the contrary, and he is most certainly not into boys or men either. He sees Zelaria like a lot of the adopted children in the gang from the Dragon, as his. He has cleaned up Noro's messes. He's defended helped or recued each of you in some way, and if you don't know or care? That's fine too. Belor does the job for all the good he can do, not the accolades....(He would in fact laugh quite heartily at the thought of accolades).
To the rest of you. My day just hit the fan. I will see you tomorrow.

Sheriff Belor Hemlock: claps and smiles warmly at one of his favorite young talents at The Dragon. "Bravo Esme! Good again, girl!" he turns to Adrien "I have known some of these you introduce me to all their lives, boy." he chuckles knowing that everyone here has likely had way more libation than they should. Any other night he would have cleared half the room, but it had been a long time since the town was able to be truely festive without a true house of worship. So he grudgingly listened to the woman next to him chatting openly with the local drunk.
Mayor Kendra Deverin: turns back from the man she was just talking to with an alcohol induced smile and a glazed look to her eyes somewhat and said "Oh lighten up Belor, You know you just wanna go pet the kitten anyways.."her slightly effected speech trailing off into sheepish drunken girly giggles before she covers her mouth and lays her hand on Adrien's arm saying "I am sorry Sir, must be one to many ales. Please excuse me, but I need to retreat to the loo if you men don't mind." With that she goes to push her chair back and rise....
Sheriff Belor Hemlock:having known the Mayor as long as he has he simply smiles and shakes his head knowing full well the benefits the town will receive in extra kindness after his boss has gotten pleasantly tipsy and embarrassed herself. Nods to Talon and shakes his hand firmly enough to be uncomfortable."Talon, is it?"
Mayor Kendra Deverin: Stops backing her chair to miss the thin little elf girl that bounces along swiftly behind her acknowledging introduction before scurrying off again. Looks to Belor "Ok I have been mistaken for a man twice now. Is it the hair?"

I am very very pleased with what i see as the core group that has formed so far. I know my character selection methods may seem odd and quirky for some, but hey....ever met some of the guys behind Elminster and Mordenkainen? Yes well...not exactly normal ok...so don't judge :P
Also, It's not my vote and this is not an impress the DM contest, but I want you all to also consider two things.
1.) I really like Dragon Warriors for a lot of reasons I won't go in to, but once again do NOT let that be the deciding vote unless it's the only way.
2.) I am not your Micro manage DM. If you GODmode some unnamed npcs have fun with it. Just realize that anything that is going against plot or I find is not good for the story or the group I will take back control of and you will likely get a warning. This next goes to PC's that take the Leadership feat.
Leadership Feat:
When I run a game for semi responsible adults I wait awhile before I approve the use of the Leadership feat. I want to see which of my players I can trust to ACT like a Leader. Then I give that person the freedom to take the Leadership feat if they request it at 7th level. I have done this silently for years. Very few know that I do this, but it's because of the power it gives.
Most people today look at the feat and see more work as they now have to manage a bunch of NPCs. What your DM sees is evil minions. This is like having a feat that lets you recruit replaceable lackies. Come on? Really? You mean as a level 7 you get a high powered butt boy or girl (Hey I am not racist...er something) who can be up to 2 levels lower for the price of a feat? Then I did the math on a Sorcerer at 8th level who is stacking Charisma. That's 12 minions folks. If he happens to be a Conjurer or a Necromancer specialist as well....do you see the headache this is for a DM?
I already have too many npc's and with a 20+ leadership score I do not have time to make all those extra npc's for one character. Just like most DM's we shun it and make it go away. But I tell people to wait and ask me again later. Then if they do here are the rules:Leadership.
Now my rules:
1.) First off You make the npc's according to the heroic NPC rules in the Core rules just like you would for any NPC. If you are bucking for this feat pick someone early that you are grooming as your trainee or sidekick. If you continuously keep putting this into the game you will end up creating basically a second NPC for yourself to run.
2.) Your lower level followers MUST BE PAID! While your Sidekick will stick it out just to learn from his/her Master, followers will not.
3.) To grow beyond Leadership score 9 you must Have a permanent Residence. Beyond 12 up to 14 you must have a permanent base that can house the number of followers allowed (2 per room in most multi-room locations, 10 per room in Dormitories (Must be at least 60'x30'). 15+ You must build an Organizational Headquarters that is separate from your Residence. Both your Residence and your Organizational Headquarters should cost no less than 750,000 gold Pieces in Value.
I feel that I have left enough padding into this system to restrain some power players and to also allow for those wanting to reach for it some serious Power (I once did this with a Fighter Sorcerer combo in a fellow DM's game and he said it was like having an old Samurai and his Student. So done right it can be great material. Done wrong and it will get you warned or ejected at worst.

LOL, sorry 'bout that. Picked a long elven first name. Try on Rhasa (pronounced Raza) for short. I already started slipping it into the narratives. Or maybe go with Lara from the last part of the name. I'm not beholden to it either way.
And Cheers!... been a long time since I watched that show. Hmm, I guess it's been a while since it's been on, too.
Ah yes, the warmth of a tavern in the evening...a mug of good....apple cider >.>...RYSIL!! Where everybody knows your name :D
Might be a good time to introduce you all to an NPC you do not know yet in Sandpoint.
Bale Morgaise:
~ Bale is an older gentleman in say his mid to late 60's. He is always wearing what he calls "Mage Armor". It seems to be a mix of a very thin, ultra-light, padded armor underneath with a half robe and leather pants. It does look quite comfortable, but with all the different pieces you wonder how this man gets dressed in less than a few hours. His colors of Dress always range from deep greens to blues to purples. He wears a neatly trimmed short full beard. His snow white hair is down past his shoulders and has thinned to a fine widows peak perfectly in the middle of his forehead, almost unnaturally so. His almost silver grey irises seem to dance and sparkle when he speaks of the past like an old historian, or maybe someone who lived it even. You have no idea his real age but he does seem to move slow, as old bones settle and ache. The most interesting piece of his attire is the gnarled old Maple Staff he never goes anywhere without. Everyone he meets is asked to speak into the staff, at a whisper, and tell it a secret. Every time someone tells the Whispering Staff a secret a new and original rune appears on the shaft. There are so many runes on the staff by now that it holds a slightly blackened and dimpled look as the tiny runes crowd each other for space. At his hip is the ivory and silver hilt & Scabbard, peace-bonded with mithril wire, of what appears to be an exotic sword he calls "Mo'ahndia". He refuses to draw the sword saying only "She would not like it if I touched her in that way", and nothing more. His wisdom is always sound, his advice somewhat cryptic, and his pockets are never empty. Every conversation ends with "Be well, my friend." and a smile, a hug, a kiss, or a handshake.

***The Rusty Dragon Inn***
It's been a fairly decent early spring. The town of Sandpoint itself is full of the hustle and bustle of early spring as ships come and go on the tides and farmers begin to plant crops. The thoughts of things like Chopper or the Cathedral fire starting to settle into distant memory. With the dedication of the Cathedral tomorrow the evenings festivities are light and lively. The Rusty Dragon is especially full tonight. The gangs all here. Even the Sheriff and Mayor have stopped by to have a nice ale or two with the Liaison to Magnimar. Adrien that's you. The balmy yet cool coastal air flows nicely off the bay and up Salmon Street to blow the salt licked breeze through the freshly cleaned and opened windows of The Dragon. Ameiko spends most of her time going from table to table laughing and cutting up with her clientele who she treats just like her family.
One of the favorite adopted daughters of Sandpoint has just left the small stage where she sang "Varsian Maiden" to the applause of everyone here. Esme please add 11 silver to your CS in tips for singing
OOC info:
All of you who have stated in your backstory that you work for Ameiko or at the Dragon may earn 2d6 copper in tips for doing your job at the Dragon tonight before the start of the game officially. Every night you work at the Dragon please roll 2d6 and you will receive that as tips at the end of the night. If you have a Skill that helps you perform said job then copper becomes Silver.

From now on when I enter this thread I want to hear every single one of you shout "RYSIL!" (Ala "Norm!" from cheers if you are old enough)
LOL I have ben reading all morning and laughing my butt off at the fact that we have the Sandpoint version of Cheers. I can even list all of you.
Sam - Adrien
Diane - Zelaria
Woody - Drake
Carla - Noro
Cliff - Talon
Norm - Mine I tell you MINE!!
Fraiser - Witchie poo (Sorry you name hurts my Lysdexia)
(I would do coach, but I doubt any of you even remember coach)
I love you guys. I wanted to close early anyways, but turn to the person on your left and congradulate them for being in the game. I made a decision yesterday that whoever had there stuff together a day early would be the ones who made it to the final cut. Well I ma add one or two more, but this is your party folks.
I am going to open the game thread. The very first quasi prequel scene opener will be in the Rusty Dragon. I know some of you have likely run the opening bit a few times. so my version is slightly skewed. You will understand later, but just a fair warning. I change up what is in the AP slightly to suit you and me, and also to keep people who read ahead in the AP on their toes. Good luck to you all and Congratulations for being on time, and willing to show you want to play.
Oh and this does not mean that those of you who have not posted round two requirements are free and clear.
You must still post as requested. I will repost the requirements here so that they are easier to reference.
Round two Selection rules.
The Story of (Insert party name) - Each of you will come up with or agree upon a title for the party.
The Party - You are a party of Sandpoint Residents, Migrant popualtion (Sailors, Merchants, Mercenaries), or arriving heroes who form a bond of friendship akin to what some of us remember either having or wanting in High School. You are not strangers. You know each other as friends or have known each other as a close knit group of friends for at least 6 months or more prior to the celebration of the new cathedral in Sandpoint. This goes for ALL those invited.
Ties to Major NPCs - Some of you have already included these in your backstory. I am not opposed to PC's sharing the same tribe or even living and working for Belor or Amieko. This gives me reasons to have established relationships to the PCs with my NPCs from the gate. My biggest concern is that these ties make sense and that I am not still guessing how who knows who is related to what one of my NPCs like Belor or Amieko will say or do next. So if you have intricate ties to multiple NPC's and to PC's make them clear. So clear I am not guessing. Otherwise say you know of them, but other than that you are just another face. This will help me and you. Remember as a DM I have a lot to manage. Please don't make my job harder.
The "I" in "Team" - Each of you will post how (Alias) would fit with this particular party and why they would even want to. Keep in mind that the idea or theme is that all of you invited to the discussion are trying to establish a PRE-existing group of friends who bond together as a team and then an adventuring party as the AP progresses. In party conflict is fun and can be entertaining. Mean, spiteful, or even arrogant showmanship type of behaviors (IC or not) will be warned once and ejected on the next. I do not tolerate people who want to play a group activity as if they are the only one who matters. I simply will not allow that kind of disrespect to me or my players. Please respect this and I can pretty much assure you of an enjoyable role play.

Response:
I looked over your whole submission and I am very happy with all of it. Your ties to the Sheriff and the Mayor put you in a very good position to liaise between the party and the local government officials. Your Ties to Zeleria and Drake also place you in a good position to get to know others through you ties with them. So far you are doing good as the best candidate for party leader, but now you just have to convince them.
This thread needs to be officially closed as I am closing any more submissions. I will still be making my final decision tomorrow on the 21st, but I am taking no new submissions. Thank you all for applying.

Hum... Six months, and ties to the main NPCs? Would this be all the main NPCs, not just Ameiko and Balor, but the mayor and the cleric as well?
Seems I have more writing to do.
No and if I somehow implied that, I apologize. I meant only that if you mention ties to an NPC that you make those ties clear. The six month ties are only for you and the others to figure out.
I should tell you that your DM is old. He forgets and makes errors. Please be patient with me and I also will be patient with you.

As you can all now see there is a method to my madness. I gave out the vows as a way for you to kind of see how I expect your character to act in accordance to each other in a party.
I do expect the vows to be followed for obvious reasons.
This Thread is now open for all of you to post at your whim. This is completely OOC Thread so anything that does not violate board policy is fine here.
MY RULE
Be kind to each other.
It's my only rule. If you break it....well I don't like threats much anymore so I am asking politely :D
At the very worst I will eject you from the AP. Please don't do this. I hate being the bad guy like that. I can play evil NPCs all day long, but don't make the DM be mean...makes him sad :(
This is a game about fantastic things in a fantastic world. If this isn't fun why are you here? If you aren't enjoying the game, Why? Don't stay in a game or in a place that you do not feel comfortable, but most of all don't play games when you aren't having fun. Let's think just a little like kids again, and less like selfish adults :)
One last thing. "It's lonely at the top, that's why I hang out with all my friends at the bottom. Mediocrity is doing a great thing poorly. True greatness lies in doing your least favorite thing with the same pride and joy as you would the most important thing." If you can remember any one of those for me as you play this game...I sure you will go far.
Anyways I open the floor for you all to tell me how you fit together. Please begin and stay open to new ideas and perspectives. Good Luck! Have Fun!
I am having one of those days I will have where I can just not touch every submission. Often times I will skim your posts in game for what I need to make decisions for as a DM. Most of the actual writing gets left to players. This does not mean I will go absent a whole day without at least trying to keep a thread moving. There are just some days where you will get 1-2 posts and others like yesterday where you get dozens. I hope you can all accept this.
To the Short List.
As time has moved forward I have both enjoyed and regretted holding submissions open so long it would seem. I figured it would take two or three days to get one maybe two good submissions. I was wrong. So rather than exclude a ton of people I am going to revise my requirements and open selections to 7.
If you do not have a WHOLE character up (Meaning backstory, crunch, & Alias) by the 21st I will auto exclude you. Until that time I am going to open the discussion thread for people whom I give the invitation, to speak to fellow prospects and get to know one another. It will be in these interactions that I will make my final selection.
To receive an invitation:
1. Whole character (backstory, crunch, & alias)
2. Send me a PM from the Alias you are using asking for an invitation. The PM MUST contain your Crunch & Backstory (in fully written form). No lists of points used as a temporary backstory will be accepted for invitation.
3. Post my invitation response to the Discussion thread with no board quotes.
Short List ONLY:
For those of you on that thread I still want a PM with the above please. I want it for my records only! You are still in round two selection. If I do not have the PM by the 21st I will drop you, so please hurry! (Yes, this means if you have already sent me these things via PM already, please send again)
Once you have done all three you are considered part of the next selection process.

Ok last thing is that this will likely be one of the few times remaining that I get to have this much time to check the boards until late this evening. SO. I will say this. IF you have been invited to the RotRL Short List Discussion Thread, then move your discussion here Rise of the Runelords Discussion Thread.
For invitation reply post :Short List Inclusion.
ok that should be all from me for a bit as I handle PM invites and what not as I work on planting. Any questions at this point will be handled by PM. Any future posts to this recruitment board will likely be ignored today. My time will be spent working on getting things ready for the AP and answering PMs from this point on. So follow the above revised guidelines and you will likely get in. May you all have a blessed day.
I am interested in creating a character for this game but i am new to the forums and to PF in general. How do I do that neat alias thing where I can make my character. I realize that with the short list it is going to be very difficult for me to get in but if I come up with something good i still have a shot and if not i can submit it to other games. Also would consider a sixth slot if the back story is good enough? I am partial to halfling rogues and human or dwarf paladins. Thanks even if I can not get in
Mathius
I have only been able to create new alias' from the "My Account" page. If anyone else knows a better easier way please suggest.
Feel free to submit. I am still accepting submissions, but I will tell you that the short list folks have already organized themselves so pushing them off their spots will be difficult.

Is it bad when the DM feels left out and confused? Because youguys took this story and ran with it. As of me posting this I am half way through a thread that is now longer than the original. To say I am impressed is an understatement. Bravo.
Cheveyo Windwalker... there's a whole more intricate backstory, but how does this work for "writing sample" and arrival at Sandpoint?
** spoiler omitted **...
Response:
+ Great way to introduce a character to me. That's like a succor punch at Ye Ol' Heart Strings. Good Job.
- Telling me there is an intricate backstory without letting me read it...tease.
- No crunch up front. I like my meat bone in thanks. Give me something to hold on to. (Any sexual jokes in reference here will likely win you a grin but no points.)
Hit me with your crunch and your "Intricate" backstory and I will hold you in the running for Tank
I would like to submit Noro Kasuri the Human Barbarian(Brutal Pugilist/Raging Drunk) back story is here need to complete the crunch part.
also if need be I can drop the raging drunk (unless you are ok with two archtypes)
I am applying for a tank position I can only hope that I can fit in.
The character personality is included in the story at the end as well as a bit of motivation.

Response:
+ I really really like the time you took and attention to detail. I like your writing style and you have a firm grasp of how to weave facts into fiction. All good qualities.
- Drug addict & Alcoholic. I am all for realism in my games. In fact I try to stay as close as I can in a fantasy game. However starting a character off with those two defects is a bit of a stretch for me. I have nothing against anyone with either of those diseases. However as a recovering addict who has been clean for over 15 years....I don't see the need for it here.
+ I like the fact that you have her tied to several different people or families in Sandpoint. You did it well, and in a way that makes a lot of sense.
- Not having your crunch done before submission. I like to see a complete picture, but in this case I am flexible. I do however like for my potential players to wait to present the finished product.
I will consider you for Tank, but please have the crunch done and try to join in the Prelim thread that was started
So far I am seeing very few good submissions. I have posted today's shortlist and I will not likely come back online much tonight. I know I sound like a grumpy old man, but my life and experience has taught me that the ones who don't want to write a good backstory aren't going to last in a long running PbP game. You are going to have to write. And you are going to have to do it like you mean it most of the time or any PbP game will suffer for it. I am not going to mince words with any of you. I put what I expect of my players out there for all of you to openly read. I love that you all want to play. It makes me smile to see any interest at all. I will not however take submissions where I see someone has let a computer do the crunch work and then they answered a list of 10 questions or less for a backstory. I know that some of you are just trying to get your hat in the ring here and I applaud you. I just don't want you to be discouraged if I tell you that your submission is not up to par. Ask me why I think it isn't up to par in a PM and when I give you feedback go back and revise. It will go a very long way to making your experience in the game and your fellow players experience much more enjoyable.
Once again, I enjoy reading all of the submissions. It's like panning for gold without all the wetness. Please keep them coming and if you aren't on the shortlist today don't give up. Just PM me and lets talk :D
Please consider my alias Tavrik for the DD specialist.
Elf rogue (scout archetype), raised in Korvosa, then among Varisian wanderers. His full sheet and background is in his profile.
I will tell you now that his background is not going to cut it for a submission. If you want to rework it with a bit more detain and also explain why he is in Sandpoint I would take another look.
Rohan might recognize this little lady's name, but her new guise is an Oracle. I obviously need to trim her back from a previous game, and do some more mechanics stuff, but the backstory is there.
She's got the haunted curse, and I made her haunts her dead brothers, or... maybe not, maybe that's just how she perceives them as. It was real fun writing that for the few weeks I could and I would like to explore it more.
If you want to know how to wow your DM read this back story. First pick of the Party is a Zelaria Quiatris as Our Follower of Desna and Resident of Sandpoint. You're in. Welcome aboard.
All of the remaining roles are still open as you can see. I am still waiting for more submissions, but the Follower of (patron Diety) is closed.
Happy submissions all.
Are you going to make all the decisions in one day, or will you be accepting roles, and closing positions as they come in?
If I really like a submission I will insert it into a role and close that role. If I am still iffy on a role I will leave it open. I will however choose a short list day by day so that people know where they are at and can PM me with questions or help needed. I am gonna let you know up front if I like what I have seen. Think of this like auditioning for a play. If you audition well I may not need a second casting call. I say good luck to you all and no decisions are final until I say "You're in" or it's the final list on the 21st.
Arcane Knowledge - How do you feel about crafting magic items, as in a Wizard dedicated to such?
Tank - How do you feel about a Half-Orc having been raised among one of the Shoanti tribes (Tamiir-Quah)? Obviously marginalized and abused, as a youth? Still turned out NG. I can work the backstory, think you'll like it.
Cheveyo Windwalker: Barbarian - 14, 19, 16, 12, 12, 8... HP: 15 minimum, AC: 18, 20 in melee w/shield. Dodge, when appropriate for +1.
Always bow/xbow, then javelin, then melee. Besides not being ugly (low charisma is a bad reaction, but not due to ugliness... mannerisms, harsh speech, not politically correct, etc...), imagining the Uruk-Hai from LotR, especially that alow motion scene.
And Arcane crafter with a bent for crafting him/herself or even one who is a knowledge junkie with a point in as many as possible plus crafting would be very good if the backstory fits.
Half-Orc Barbarian is a very good build. I just recommended such to someone asking advice. I would say though that it would require one heck of a lot of work to impress me with not only party integration but how has he survived to be a part of the celebration in Sandpoint. Only shot I see here is a tie somehow to Sheriff Belor Hemlock as he is a Shoanti. Other than that be creative and I am sure we can see what happens.
An elf witch with the Winter Witch archetype (from Inner Sea Magic) if allowed. If not I can swap to a regular witch.
Name and gender may change.
Need to buy equipment.
Point form background to be fleshed out a bit later.
Function as the "arcane knowledge junkie". No interest in other roles with this character.
If we need to have a link to Ameiko in the background, she could have been the one to help her get back on her feet after landing in Sandpoint peniless.
Flesh out the background story. Tie into Amieko really well and we will see, but right now I am not really feeling it till I see a backstory.
I just read Zelaria Quiatris's backstory and realized how similar our stories are. Perhaps we could be from the same wagons that were attacked by bandits and are close friends because of it.
I agree with you that something could be done to tie your two characters together. If you want to have better chance why don't you PM each other and then send me a joint submission on how you two would have grown up together in Sandpoint and become connected with Amieko.
***TO ALL***
After reviewing what I have so far I would like to let you know the preliminary short list. This list is not final and is subject to revision up to June 21st. But so far this is what I like for a Party.
Tank - Adrien Duran Mandreiv
DD Specialist - Talon Eldercourt
Arcane Specialist - Esmeralda Klimo
Follower of Desna - Zelaria Quiatris
Leader- ??
5th slot- Rohan Drake
If your name is not on this list, why? Have you carefully considered how your crunch effects your backstory? Have you followed the character creation guidlines? If you can answer yes and still wonder why you didn't make the prelim list...PM me and ask. Once again this is NOT a final list. It's just what I like so far. Final decisions will be on the 21st.
If you really want in and are still wondering why you aren't considered? I don't bite. PM me and I will tell you :D
For those of you in the list above. If you want to stay on the short list you must update your character to be 1st level (Zalaria). You must show in a revision of your backstory how you would integrate with each of your fellow preliminary party members. If I do not have this by the 21st I will consider it a lack of interest and will open the spot to those who still wish to play. It does not have to be long, but I want you already thinking how the 5 of you will become a team. Feel free to PM each other for ideas and hit me with a group Leader elected. If I see all five of you working in earnest this early....You could go a long ways to sealing the deal and closing submissions early. Up to you. I will be online throughout the day as I work. I will do my best to continue checking submissions.
Rysil
At this point I will be honest that unless I see a submission that really captures me or one of the existing 5 is not up to the extra leg work to keep their spot I will likely close submission a day early.
Please don't give up though. I am very encouraged by the responsesso far. Keep up the good work
1: For traits... I wasn't aware there were any from the player's guide, I am only seeing bonus feats. (aka upbringing) Is that what you mean? (As in have a bonus feat (a 2nd one, must be upbringing?) (or are you talking traits from the shadows under sandpoint (from APG)?)
2: When the hardcover comes out (I think next month), plan to use that? Or stick with the 3.5 material?
Have to update backstory, character was originally from a RotRL game that didn't make it very far. (Going for TANK)
Background is light, Needs to come down to level one. So far I would not consider this eligible for submission.
Kybryn - I like most of the story. I like the fact that his lineage could be just coincidence in regards to the bounty of his life in Korvosa. I like the fact that he is unsure if it is his lineage and connection to his God. I do not like the confirmation at the end. I would much prefer for the ritual to be the grueling event you wrote it as, but instead of the glowing figure, allow the key to be the only thing left behind on the Altar. Then that night He has a Vision of a Great Demon Rising off the coast of Varisia and attempting to swallow the world.
I will consider this as a Divine Follower of Abadar submission for now. I think his Leadership would need to be proven amongst his teammates. Also consider revising your backstory about 30% I would say if your submission is approved.
Very good work. I am impressed :)
Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to get to work on restructuring my background. I'll let you know when I'm done.
Kybryn
I apologize for saying you were in for divine follower. I realize now my mistake. I like this for the "TANK" role. I apologize for the earlier mistake.
Tossing my hat in the ring for this. Full Sheet on the page. I am applying for the Skill Monkey Slot, with heavy focus on disable and stealth. Can go either melee or ranger once we get started. I posting from work so I will toss a back story once I get home.
The crunch looks decent, but to really have a good chance the backstory needs to wow me as you do not have the Rog or Alch Bonus to Perception and DD for being able to work w/ magic traps and seeing them on the fly. I am really looking for a rogue or an Alchemist specifically for this role. Please keep that in mind for any future submissions.
