Tahata has some ideas a loud noise or two might spook them but its a little unpredictable, they could turn towards the caravan. Alternatively you and Maitoh may be able to kind of wrangle them. You would assume they are not domesticated but you have a certain skill level making it possible.

The group is several hundred feet away and moving closer but not until about 75 feet off do you notice that many of them appear to have a brand of some sort on them. It looks like a crudely made shape of a two headed humanoid.

Tahata and Durian are helpful but the crossing takes longer then it should. At one point Ulf slips and nearly submerges himself but manages to keep his head above the cold water. After two hours everyone makes it to the other side, exhausted and wet. It seems nothing was attracted to the activity.

From here you will be following rivers northern bank as it loops eastward. This journey will take a couple of days until you will reach the village of Iqaliat.

Unless the party wishes to do more then just rest things are quiet for a few days. On the third day you notice a heard of what appears to be musk oxen lazing about and blocking the path. You are some distance away and they are not alarmed by your presence but also do not appear eager to mover.

Wait the out? Try and move them? Some other idea?

It is assumed not eveyone will have skills so it is checks from those that can. Basically it is about time and resources. A couple more would be good.

You pretty much need to use Geni+ just budget for it. I was not a fan of the concept or paying for things that were free but the app actually worked really well and kept our days moving smoothly. Not the recommendations, they sucked, the ability to que up and using lightning lane is key.

Do your research before the trip. We were prepared but so much has changed at Disney World walking in blind would be rough. The biggest thing to learn about is Geni +, the app that now replaces Fast Pass and other things. I will not bias you with my opinion on the product.

It is a full, uneventful, day and 3/4 before you make it to the Qqpuk Ford. It takes well over a hour before Ulf finds a spot that he deems suitable. In the frozen mud many hoof prints from large animals can be seen. They appear to be the tracks of large oxen or cows headed into the Ford.

"Well this should about do it. You folks ready to give it a go now or wait until the morning? Either works it just means camping on the far side, wet, tonight or traveling wet tomorrow. I have done both."

"Either those with the right skills can pitch in."

I need a decision of when to cross and then some rolls for those that can / will help. Survival and Knowladge Nature are good skills to help out with our you could do a straight up Stregnth of Dex roll. Either way I will need at least two rolls from those helping.

The day passes as you travel, talk and plan. You see the falcon one last time before night falls and you make camp for an uneventful night.

I do not know why I wrote hawk before it is clearly a falcon. Sorry about that.

Rising early you have time to prepare for the day and move out. The snow gained a couple of inches yesterday and today to travel is slow going even with winter gear. Still the group continues and only sees the falcon one time.

Near mid-day mulitiple falcons can be seen circling and the crack of a branch alerts you just before a voice calls out.

"Coming from the Pale Tower we see. This is as far as you go."

Two archers set out from behind trees with bows at the ready, arrows ready to fly.

Off to the side there is movement as a large white wolf steps out from behind the tree and speaks.

"Do I get to feast on royal blood at the end of this hunt. I will have to thank the witch."

Fortunately for the split party there are no further threats in the area of the cabins. Most have holes in the roof or other areas but there are two beyond the one the witchfire was in that are in decent shape. Inside you find many items but they are so worn with age and weather they simply are junk at this point with the exception of two fifty foot silk ropes.

I am unclear where you are sleeping but, as it has been so long since I posted, I will point out that the same thing happens in either place, a good nights rest. So no concerns there though you may want to come to agreement for RP reasons.

The next day is calm and you are told that the following you will come to Qopuk Ford and need to cross Taraska River. It is not a relatively easy place to cross with only occasional mishap. The wagons should have no problem though you will need to stop to warm the animals after.

The visible wolf pauses mid step as Freyr growls and shouts. Giving a little yelp its tail drops and it, along with three others, trot away from what is clearly an alpha predator. A thirteen would have given them pause and demoralized them. A twenty seven is too much for a pack animal.

Nadya quickly catches up with Freyr and goes to the boy.

"This is why I don't like you running off. Your learning but you need more training to travel away from the group." SHe turns to Freyr "Again, I have you to thank it seems. No tracks, they were Boreal Wolves then. We may be clear but normally they will follow a group looking for anyone alone."

Freyr you can guess they would not continue to follow you at this point even if that is their normal action.

You were the only one to spot that multiple hawks have flown you and success on the Nature check tells you that it has been the same bird more then once.

Nadya nods to Frjya "Yes pairs is best but he has spent a lot of time in the woods and will stay close. Of course company is better."

Freyr follows after the boy who clearly just wanted to get a walk in the woods. Orm looks back seeing he is being followed and deflates a little but he continues on.

After some time there is movement in the underbrush that catches Freyr's eye. After a moment he can see that it is a white furred wolf lurking about watching. Another wolf quickly bolts from one bit of underbrush to another. From where you are it does not appear that this movement disturbers the snow.

As the others move Tahata and Maitoh strike hard. Their attacks do not do full damage but they do enough that the witch screams and dissipates as its form falls to the ground.

So that was a hard GM fight. As written she would have summoned will-o-wisps before the fight started. That felt like too much.

The cabin now sits empty.

Kvell reacts with a spell that turns out to be very effective against these little goblins. A burst of light bursts forward catching all but one of the creatures. They do not even have time to scream as the light blasts them unconscious and dying!

Well that was very effective given they are evil with 6hp! I really expected them to run off with some of your stuff.

The remaining goblin drops what it was holding and stumbles off into the woods. If there is the desire it an easily be tracked down and killed. Supplies are scattered but nothing managed to make it too far away.

Nadya is very thankful that the supplies were kept and you are able to settle back down for the night. The morning comes and the party gets ready to travel again.

If anyone has special prep let me know. After about an hour of travel you here Nadya tell Orm it is ok if he moves a little off the path to gather firewood as you travel.

Belive it or not this is me taking it easy in this fight. She is suppose to summon will-o-whisps before the encounter. I just couldn't do that to you.

Loren picks up the pattern and runs into the house to keep an eye out while Maitohn advances but fails to connect with a bite.

Durian does what dwarves do best, tries to catch up while Ayame casts another spell causing minimal damage.

The witchfire cackles and drifts back and up, leaving itself open, before turning invisible.

Loren misses his attempt to stab at the phantom as does Tahata. Fortunately Maitoh, despite being sickened, manages to get another mouthful of nastiness. With a charge Durian manages to land one good gut punch causing further damage while Ayame buffs the group and gives herself some protection.

With a cackle the incorporeal creature flies back through the building and out of sight.

The creatures are clearly shocked by Freyr's shout and appear to be thrown off quite a bit. Confused chattering can be heard as they try and pick up as much as they can carry, clearly ready to run off with supplies.

These things are clearly no threat physically but will try and escape with your supplies. They gathering items what do you do?

If it had a sense of humor the creature would have laughed at Durian's comment. As it is someplace in its soul it knows it should.

Loren pelts the undead specter with snowballs that it fails to avoid. Likewise Ayame screams but does not seem to get all of it.

Tahata misses but Maitoh manages to catch the creature, probably getting an unpleasant taste, and doing some damage.

Spinning the witchfire lashes out at the wolf.

Failed Save:

Any creature damaged by the incorporeal touch or ranged bolt attacks of a witchfire must succeed on a DC 22 Will save or become engulfed in sickly green flames. While these eerie flames deal no additional damage, the affected creature glows as per faerie fire and becomes sickened. While under the effects of the witchflame, the victim gains vulnerability to fire and takes half again as much damage (+50%) from fire attacks of any sort. This effect persists for 10 minutes. The supernatural flames can only be extinguished before this duration expires by a break enchantment, miracle, remove curse, or wish spell—the effective caster level of the witchflame is equal to the witchfire’s HD (CL 10th for most witchfires). Any creature entering the same square as a witchfire or striking it with a melee attack must succeed on a DC 22 Will save or begin burning with witchflame, even if the attack would not otherwise harm the witchfire because of its incorporeal nature.

So I am sure you can see that something has been up with me. I am not sick or anything just in over my head in the real world.

The combination of running a company very short staffed and my youngest starting actual school has put me over the edge. No offense to any teachers here but how do they expect parents to work when there are a total of eight, non-consecutive, weeks off a school beyond summer vacation.

Add to that having spent the last year and a half working to keep my company solvent and life is just too much. I see the light at the end of the tunnel but that end is more then six months away.

I want to be fair to you guys and the way this has gone is not fair. I am open to ideas. Do you want me to advertise for a replacement GM? What is best for you folks?

I do not like writing this. Those that have been with me from the start know that I was a once or twice a day poster and now I am struggling to make GM posts at all. It kind of breaks my heart but I do not want the stories to end so poorly. I enjoy you guys and your choices greatly so talk about it and tell me what is best.

Durian I just saw the 23 and did not note the nat 20. Damage happens.

Tahata avoids some of the withcfires attempt to sap his strength and he and the wolf position themselves while calling Durian to move out of the house.

Ayame speeds up the group.

Durian moves in landing two strikes, declining to move out of the hunting cabin. The strikes hit but do much less damage then they would against corporal enemies.

Loren calls force a ball of ice and snow connecting with the witchfire for partial damage. Without a natural 20 that would have missed. Wow.

The witchfire is an intelligent foe and decides to get some distance doing a full withdrawal though the side of the house and outside.

It appears that whatever is making the noise does not hear Freyr moving around in the night. In the moonlight he sees creatures, grimacing like a maniac, this lean little bat-eared horror displays a mouth full of needle-like teeth and glowing, orange eyes.

Kvell see no sign of the swarm that flew over and Nadya tries to keep towards paths that have some tree cover. Kvell does manage to spot two rabbits and the party brings them down for fresh meat playing the part of hunters.

As you get closer you here the sounds of life coming from with in the cabin and the lights shift around indicating moving around. Durian knocks and waits a moment, a moment more. After about twenty second the door pushes outward.

Lights can be seen but the hearth is dark. It appears no one is inside after all though you can oddly still here the faint sounds of activity.

Side note we are at the type of thing that is very hard for me in PbP. I don't want to just jump you from encounter to encounter but overland travel is rough that way.

Also I feel I can be much more expressive at the table. Is this hunting cabin fine? Is it a disaster waiting to happen? Its a tougher line in text.

The light of flames can be seen as they shift on the walls inside of the cabin. After a moment a figure moves past the window but does not look out. From the size of the figure and what you glimpsed it appeared to be a slightly heavy middle aged woman.

Moving around and checking the other windows you see nothing amiss.

"My affairs here are settled we can leave after a day I could think. I appreciate the fresh start you all have given me, it is most welcome. If it holds this whole area will be for the better."

The trip is about one hundred and thirty miles and will take eight to ten days depending on weather. That speed is assuming walking with snowshoes and sleds for the wagons. A camp will be needed at night to keep warm and replenish your bodies stores of energy. A camp will allow you to heal as normal, cold weather gear will keep you alive but not be as restful to sleep in.

You first day of travels is quiet and calm excepting a raven swarm passes over headed back the way you came.

One day passes then another.

Mid way though the third day after the bear Ulf holds up the caravan.

"Just ahead we will hit some small hunting lodges. Mostly empty this time of year but during season they are used by Erutaki and southern hunters. Weeks of hunting and skinning in the summer."

It take another hour until you see them. Spaced out.

Tahata and Ayame notice that one of the cabins has a small trail of smoke, as though from a cook fire, rising and a glint of light in the window. There are also others that look empty all scattered over a few hundred yards.

Ended up out of town this week and next week. Spotty internet on the farm.

Loren lands a ball of snow and ice that makes the bear wince. Even with Ayame's help Durian cannot connect but Maitoh and Tahata both do strike true.

Combat Over

Combined with the snowball they bring the bear down, it shutters and almost deflates in death, its hair seeming to hand even loser. There is not a lot to eat in the ice and snow.

Ulf strides forward.

"Well you all handled that quite easily."

He moves to look at the bear.

"Should be some good eating in that at least. Hide could be worth something too, its lose so easy to skin. Give me a hand if you can. Best get comfortable we burning the day cleaning this up but can't waist it."

The day and night past easily enough and you with the caravan are back on the way.

Snowballs connect a moment before Maitoh lands a savage bite on the bear causing to to yelp. The wolf attempts to pull the bear down but it is to big to be moved.

Durian misses twice with his spear while Ayame repositions.

The wolf is the closes trheat and such takes a full attack from the enraged bear.
