Unfortunately, due to reduced free time and increased workload on my end, I am going to be withdrawing form this game. GM, thank you for the opportunity to try out the Shadowdark rules, even though my time was brief.

"Well, shall we, then?" Fanki inquires, holding the torch aloft.

Fanki has two torches in her crawler's kit, as well as a lantern and a flask of oil.

"I wonder how to open this," Fanki muses, studying the glyphs.

I'll just use the dagger and leave the staff at home. They do the same amount of damage!

Also, it looks like Gimli got that nat 20 on the first try for the puzzle, so Fanki won't need to attempt it. :)

Okay, I’ll hold the torch for now and wield my dagger in the other hand, ready to drop the weapon I if I need to cast.

Fine with being in the rear for 10-foot hallways. Fanki would prefer to be second from the rear in 5-foot hallways. She needs both hands free for her staff so would not be holding a torch initially.

Fanki had introduced herself to the group at yesterday's celebration. "I'm Fanki. I've done some mercenary work around the colony, but I'm ready to put my magic to better use as a Crawler."

Once in the cave, she looks up at the letters above the door. "It's written in the Primordial language. It says 'Quazquinten.' Wonder if that's the name of the cave, or something that dwells within it?"

Alright, I've put an alias together for my wizard. Fanki learned shamanic magic from the old elf Kurúki. Since there are few wizards in Gorgona, her services were in high demand, and she made decent coin working for the highest bidder. Now, though, she's ready to see what lies beyond and below the colony as an explorer!

Avatar and appearance still might change before game start.

Fanki's eidolon has a maximum load of 460 lbs. Assuming the cat weighs less than that, it could carry the beast if we want to take it with us.

Fanki casts guidance on her eidolon and sends it into battle. It strides up to the nearest dinosaur and swings its weapon in a wide arc.

I'll be taking another short staycation from 1/1 through 1/5. Posting will be sporadic until I return to work on 1/6.

Fanki works a magic spell, surrounding her protector with a field of armor, then nods her agreement. "Yes. We should not linger."

When asked to present herself, Fanki steps forward hesitantly. "I am Fanki. I have been cursed by the gods, but have been blessed by the spirits of the land. I now carry a guardian within my soul, and I seek to learn more about them and their intentions."

When the group comse upon the corpse of the sloth, Fanki gasps. "A great predator is nearby. I will call forth my guardian to protect us."

The young woman closes her eyes in concentration. Her hair and furs stir in an unseen wind, and a glowing sigil appears on her forehead. After a minute, the sigil flares brightly, and the guardian appears beside her--a woman seemingly made of blossoms, bark, and antlerlike branches. The being stands protectively in front of Fanki, ready for trouble.

Fanki sighs. "I wish I could embrace sleep. My thoughts are restless. Perhaps the day's journey will help me quiet them."

Fanki crawls out from beneath her pile of furs, rubbing at her eyes. There is too much on the young woman's mind for her to sleep. Thoughts of the god in the cave, the dark magic that had assaulted her, the protector that had emerged to save her. She could still feel the protector within her spirit, ready to heed her call when the time was right.

She walks through the quiet camp until she catches a glimpse of Gnarok standing on his own. The man is an oddity to Fanki, at once both ancient and youthful, possessed of great knowledge and great sorrow. She cautiously approaches, smoothing her skirt and offering a hesitant smile. "Hello. Can't sleep either?" she asks.

Alright, not sure yet if I'd rather play things out in game or just start with the eidolon, but I'll let you know before we begin in earnest. :)

GM, you had mentioned possibly including the discovery of Fanki's eidolon during the course of gameplay. Did you still want to have this happen in-game or should she start with the eidolon?


With the surfeit of submissions pet classes, I would be willing to change my character to a god-meddled oracle. The backstory would be largely the same, minus the eidolon. Let me know if this will work out better, GM.

That said, that story could fit pretty well into the first adventure if you wanted to play that story out. We'd have to work through the rules details since you wouldn't have the Eidolon or the curse yet. Something like you have already had some magical training, you get the best of your or the Eidolon's skills, maybe some of your stats are higher before you invest some of your power in the spirit.

We can talk about all of that after selection is complete.

Fanki's stats should be complete now. The basic idea I have for her backstory is that she was training to be an apprentice to the clan's shaman and was sent out to make contact with a local god to beseech them for their favor. But the god was capricious and decided to meddle in her fate, subjecting her to a barrage of strange, primordial magic. The magic would have killed her but instead, her psyche manifested an eidolon to protect her and take the brunt of the magical assault. The god was amused and so they let Fanki live.

She can now summon the eidolon as a protector for herself and the clan, and the connection has given her a modicum of arcane magic as well. But the magic of the gods will forever more have strange and unpredictable side effects on her.

Assuming all this is cool, I can do a full write-up next week.

Here is Brainiac's unchained summoner submission. I decided to go with a kami eidolon. The crunch is mostly done, except for traits and equipment.

I also am trying to decide on an oracle curse to go with the soulbound summoner archetype. The three I've narrowed it down to are deaf, god-meddled, or powerless prophecy. GM, is there one of those you like more or think would be more appropriate for the campaign?

Once that's settled, I will write up her backstory.
