  • Arcane Reservoir (Su): At 1st level, the exploiter wizard gains the arcanist’s arcane reservoir class feature. The exploiter wizard uses his wizard level as his arcanist level for determining how many arcane reservoir points he gains at each level. This ability replaces arcane bond.

    An arcanist has an innate pool of magical energy that she can draw upon to fuel her arcanist exploits and enhance her spells. The arcanist’s arcane reservoir can hold a maximum amount of magical energy equal to 3 + the arcanist’s level. Each day, when preparing spells, the arcanist’s arcane reservoir fills with raw magical energy, gaining a number of points equal to 3 + 1/2 her arcanist level. Any points she had from the previous day are lost. She can also regain these points through the consume spells class feature and some arcanist exploits. The arcane reservoir can never hold more points than the maximum amount noted above; points gained in excess of this total are lost.

    Points from the arcanist reservoir are used to fuel many of the arcanist’s powers. In addition, the arcanist can expend 1 point from her arcane reservoir as a free action whenever she casts an arcanist spell. If she does, she can choose to increase the caster level by 1 or increase the spell’s DC by 1. She can expend no more than 1 point from her reservoir on a given spell in this way.


  • Exploiter Exploit: At 1st level and every 4 levels thereafter, the exploiter wizard gains a single arcanist exploit (see page 9). The exploiter wizard uses his wizard level as his arcanist level for determining the effects and DCs of his arcanist exploits. This ability replaces arcane school.

  • Extra Arcanist Exploit (Arcane Bloodline Development): Gain an amulet as a bonded object, as per the sorcerer's arcane bond bloodline power. Since the bloodline power explicitly states that sorcerer and wizard levels stack when using this power, Karcinal is not limited to 1st-level wizard spells being cast spontaneously with the amulet.
  • Skill Focus (Spellcraft): Gain a +3 bonus to Spellcraft checks. This bonus increases to +6 if you have 10 or more ranks in Spellcraft.
  • Spell Focus (Transmutation): Gain a +1 bonus to save DCs of spells from selected school.

  • Quick Study: The arcanist can prepare a spell in place of an existing spell by expending 1 point from her arcane reservoir. Using this ability is a full-round action that provokes an attack of opportunity. The arcanist must be able to reference her spellbook when using this ability. The spell prepared must be of the same level as the spell being replaced.

Backstory

If Attention Deficit Disorder were diagnosed on Golarion, then Karcinal would have been its poster child. The half-elf has been to five separate wizardry schools, picking up this and that from each. A destined dropout, it wasn't until he joined the Church of Nethys that Karcinal was able to piece all the disparate facts and theories into a cohesive whole, and earn his degree with the sponsorship of his mentor, Father Otis.

Karcinal is now a field scribe with the Dark Archive, using his eclectic demesne to make connections where others see only chaos. He is always on the lookout for seemingly irrelevant leads--from a wizard's choice of arcane notation, to the key of music a bardic score is written in, to the arrangement of trees in a druid's grove--there is little that Karcinal does not initially consider, and even less that does not make it into his eidetic memory.

Karcinal finds most people frustratingly uninformed when trying to convey his ideas, and cannot bring himself to respect anyone who refuses to learn. However, Karcinal envies the "lesser races'" ability to fall asleep out of boredom, especially when dealing with elves. A second-generation half-elf, he finds elves' patience maddeningly dull, especially since their days are less constrained by sleep. Karcinal is intimidated by half-orcs and humans, and has taken to using a combination of Prestidigitation and expressive Nethys masks to help express himself around them. The half-elf finds dwarves fascinating and deep, and appreciates halflings' penchant for recordkeeping and the odd joke. Karcinal is an oddball even among his own, and believes his parents to be saints for their patience in raising him. He finds kindred spirits among gnomes, finding their antics and expressiveness to make up for their tendencies to dwell on the subject of their fixations. More than one gnome has been left in awe by a language-defying joke told by "the world's tallest halfling," or a prank pulled by "the Mischievous Masked Man."

On the battlefield, Karcinal makes up for his physical weakness by optimizing his spellcasting, extending the duration of his spells to make a few projectiles last the whole encounter. He does his best to avoid situations that will make him consume the party healer's abilities, eventually taking up the Extend and Enlarge metamagic feats to do as the rich do and throw money at their problems from afar.
