as you are looking at a caster I would consider the Vulture as its support benefit will trigger on spell attack as well as a strike.

Gross lol, but good point. Sadly doesn't have stealth so not sure if it could be spotted, and if it is, underground, would other dezinens care or not.

Another GM variable is how other creatures will react to your animal. A bad GM will have everything try to murder your animal on sight. A good GM will consider several factors. Is your animal native to this environment and therefore unlikely to alarm anyone? Birds should fit this in forests and bats in caves. Is the creature capable and inclined to hunt animals like yours? Are they aware of casters being able to use animals as scouts? Finally, your GM has a lot of leeway on what constitutes "simple" questions and requests.

Generally, familiars will be better scouts than animal companions, to the point that choosing an animal companion based on scouting potential feels like a waste. Lots of reasons for this. If a a familiar is killed while scouting you rarely lose combat power. And familiars have a wide variety of abilities you can choose from that companions don't.

-They always share an empathetic connection with you that can let you know if they are attacked or spotted something particularly interesting.
- When those triggers occur you can Share Senses and potentially identify the creature yourself.
- Speech and touch telepathy can let you understand each other outside of druid stuff.
- Can be adapted to different environments, such as giving it a burrow or swim speed.
- Can have more senses, like darkvision, scent, snd tremorsense.
- Always tiny, making it less noticable.

Oh, 100% familiars are better, I just don't have the option with this build and the feats I have to take, but as a Beastmaster hoping I can find more functionality with the "other" animal companions.

This is underground, so yeah, bat, or maybe owl, but the cave pterosaur also makes sense, but the lack of stealth could be an issue

What you can do in terms of controlling an animal/familiar scout like this is highly GM dependant. There is no real agreement about it.

True, I'll work that out, just making sure I'm thinking about the other aspects correctly

Greetings, I have some thoughts below and would love input if I have the wrong ideas about how it all works, thanks!

The idea is, what could be the best scouting companion
Druid - Animal Companion - Free Archetype Beastmaster
The druid is more casting focused, so many of the support benefits won't be useful.

Bird
Doesn't have darkvision, but good fly, support ability not useful for this character
Stealth skill is good option

Bat
Has echolocation as precise, although 20ft, slower fly, support ability not useful for this character
Stealth skill is good option

Cave Pterosaur
Has darkvision, good fly, and support ability can give a +2 to AC/Reflex to whoever is behind it.
Doesn't have stealth, has thievery, very situational, although funny

At earlier levels, as an Animal druid it seems like I can give a simple command, like "Fly ahead and look for anything moving, come back if in danger" and being able to talk to the animal feels like I could get a simple, animal-like response "three things moving, two-legs like you" type of thing.

At 6th level I'll get the Trance so I can see myself.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the clarifications and comments!

To rephrase more precisely...

We don't think this is the full context of why the question is being asked or why it needs an answer. Especially a formal answer backed by the authority of game developers.

So - to ask again - Is there a particular reason this needs an answer?

What scenario would it make a practical difference? Something that would significantly and noticeably change the outcome of the battle.

The hesitancy is because we have all seen times where someone comes onto these forums asking a seemingly innocuous but somewhat vague and hypothetical question - and then once they get an answer that they like (usually because of some form of leading question) - they then state assertively that something else that is clearly an abuse of the rules and completely out of standard game balance must also be rules-legal.

So you can see why we are a bit hesitant to answer your seemingly innocuous but somewhat vague and hypothetical question here...

Sorry for the confusion, specifically the situation is a potentially high undead adventure with a kineticist using Safe Elements which does non-lethal damage to avoid allies in AoE. Research has shown what others had said, that there is no immunity, but asking the forums if there was ever a clarification from a writer/staff. But maybe no clarification is required, as everyone says the same thing.

Thanks

Baarogue wrote:

It's the full question, it's related to any spells or kineticist abilities that do non-lethal and needing confirmation, a staff/writer would have been nice is all.

I've seen dozens of threads saying that undead are not immune to non-lethal, but also a lot of confusion on the unconscious part, but has there ever been any sort of official clarification from the staff/writers that could be pointed to for anyone who is also confused on this point?
Thank you

Greetings all, so I'm sorry to say, it is possibly a good thing that elephant abomination is going to stomp Enoli, as I, unfortunately, have things in life that really will just interfere with my keeping up. Sorry, I wish I could continue, just not sure when I could. It's been a great game watching all of you act out this horror/mystery. I hope you all survive and save the world.

Enoli stoically takes in the briefing and accepts what he hears just as he accepted it in the jungles. That there are evil creatures, demons or spirits does not surprise Enoli, but the scope of it all takes him back. Nothing in Grandfather's stories said anything of an empire of these creatures before men.

Enoli closes his binder and partially stands, leaning over the table towards Shapiro.

"Mr. Shapiro, we almost died against a small group of these snakes, some who were actually just controlled humans. How do you expect us to succeed against these? There we're other...things out in that jungle that our regular weapons could not harm. Do we get to take the strange weapons we found with us? Also in all these years has Caduceus not learned of other weapons or weaknesses? Has anyone tried to reach out to the Yig worshippers for help, with their own understanding and advanced technology?" asks Enoli.

Can I also spend a day learning the language? And is there any information from my augury before this meeting, or maybe I could have done the ritual afterwards, or should I get that sanity back?

On the flight back Enoli watched his new friends Minerva and Abraham, and his old friend Father Pena. He wished he had the strong medicine his Grandfather had, to help both Minerva's wounds, but also the haunted look in Father's eyes, and the distant view and clenched jaw of Abraham's. But he didn't have strong medicine, he wasn't able to help, and this brought out a wave of anger he wasn't expecting.

Enoli also reflected on the horrors he saw and wondered why they didn't seem to affect him as much. What were the visions he saw during the fight, of Grandfather and the rituals, the ones that gave him these scars? He needed to know, he had to, he won't be unprepared when this happens again. Why do I assume this would happen again, it seems...right

Once they landed Enoli knew he would be both unneeded, and most likely unwanted, at the hospital, so he let them take Minerva, vowing to visit her later. He made it to the small apartment above the boxing gym that Father helped him find while he was in New York.

He slept for almost a full day, a restless sleep, full of potential answers hiding in the shadows of dreams, fleeing when he would reach out. When he woke he knew he needed something, any answer to fill this void inside him. If the dreams won't answer him, he would need to take more direct action. He gathered his larger medicine pouch from his footlocker. He gently untied and unfolded the pouch of herbs and small bones, he prepared the bowl for the offering. He set the knife next to the bowl. There must always be a sacrifice, said Grandfather, a sacrifice of the body and the mind

Enoli sees the serpentine scales beneath the torn flesh and there are flashes of memory; the cold stone slab, tight ropes burning his wrists, Grandfather standing above him chanting, the blackest of nights with brilliant stars, their light seeming to reach the hill on the plain, and highlighting dark figures slowly coming up the hill, coming towards him. He shouts for Grandfather, tears swirling the light of the stars.

Enoli snaps out of this sudden fugue, wiping his eyes with his forearm.
