I agree, there are lots of different methods for painting miniatures. I think the trick for me is to watch others paint, and if it makes sense to ME, and is something I can accomplish, adopt that technique as my own. Most important of all, have fun while you're doing it. Otherwise why bother? :)
Basing was done by attaching the mini to a 25mm games workshop base and then using Elmer's glue and a ballast mix I scrounged up to fill in the gaps. I did a video of that as well

I've found that if I paint with multiple coats I get better coverage, and less detail filled in on the miniature.
