Emily says, "I suddenly feel the need to do a story on street preachers..."
Emily sits forward and says "I'm all ears"
Emily says "Well damn.." and shakes her head. The look on her face says she's totally flummoxed.
Emily rubs her hands together excitedly and pulls a chair up to sit and watch, trying to see what they see.
Emily looks at what Zerin points to from where she is and is silently annoyed that she didn't notice anything.
After BART says that, Emily stops pacing and looks at the Detective to watch for his response.
Emily leans forward a little to squint at the screens. After a little bit she says, "Yeah, I got nothin'" and stands up to pace around the room a bit / stretch.
Emily mutters "Showtime" under her breath as she turns her attention to the streams.
"Ok, now that we're gotten that out of the way, let's get back to business." Emily says, "I'd like to speak to the profilers. Or see their report. And I'd like to see the case files. One of us might recognize something in there that we're taking for granted." "I assume it's not possible to do facial recognition analysis on the bystanders in the victim's previous vids because they'd be blurred out due to lack of consent. Correct?" "Also we should try and feed Avryl before midnight or bad things will happen."
Emily nods then says "What you're saying is: We're hanging out here until you get the all clear. So we might as well brainstorm to pass the time?"
some of us have a nasty habit of tattling. Emily rolls her eyes... When B.A.R.T. finishes Emily says, "I have to agree with him for a change. You haven't mentioned anything about how you intend to protect us. All we've talked about is catching this guy. We can talk about solving the case forever but we're going to have to leave this room eventually."
Apologies for my tardiness. I keep forgetting this section exists and life has been chaotic of late.
To Zerin Emily says, "Honestly when aren't we being watched? How the hell does one single out one watcher of one person this day and age? Or multiple people? Hell, any number of people could be keeping tabs on all 5 of us at once. Emily sits back in her chair, looks at the ceiling and thinks out loud: "If the profilers think he doesn't care that I'm NOT broadcasting about this right now, that means patience. Patience works with the idea that he spent a ridiculous about of time searching for the right group of people to involve. Patient AND meticulous...and more interested in the final outcome than watching me work my way unwittingly to my demise... hmmm" She looks at Eteki. "But I don't use a feedback unit. And if he was creating his own show for sick freaks you'd think he'd want to build anticipation and excitement. We've got two different MO's here. Have the profilers considered that this could be a team?"
Emily tales a second to rub her temples and grumbles, Great, another one.. To Eteki she says coldly "I'm sorry I was unclear just now when I TOLD YOU I can hold off until after the investigation is closed. Not sure why you think I don't get the gravity of the situation... unless you were expecting hysterics. I don't have time to be a blubbering idiot about a threat to my life right now. There's a serial killer targeting me for something. I can freak out later." "As for getting out there with a sniper, I'm all for it. But how long do you think you can keep me offline without the killer losing interest and moving to a different spiller? And how pissed off do you think they're going to be when I get back online and say I'm dropping this or present some made up BS? Something tells me a killer with a story to tell or a lesson to teach isn't going to be pleased with the situation." "Now to answer your question, why us? Why can't it just be that we know each other? Who knows how long the killer has been stalking people looking for people with the right kind of connections?"
Emily doesn't even look at BART as he talks and just looks at the ceiling. When he's done she nods and says to Detective Eteki "Obviously I don't speak for everyone here. I'm willing to help and will defer to you regarding the best way I can be of assistance. If you want me to leave the whole thing to you, I can do that until this case is closed. Then yes, I'll expect exclusive access." "I haven't shown Zerin or Avryl's faces on my feed so it's possible the killer doesn't know they're involved. That's not something I would count on but it is a possibility."
BART perks up a bit in his chair and straightens up. Oh... me? Emily closes her eyes in annoyance when he starts speaking as she had been addressing the cop. After a second to regroup to opens them again and nods along with BARTs retelling of events. "Or unless you get a video file like that one. The same kind Candy Kane got. The same kind that got her killed." Emily takes some time to process everything she just heard. Her face is blank, but she cracks a small smile when Avryl defines "Chatelain"... She looks at Detective Eteki, slides the card with the video over to him and says "How can I help?" "I am sure you understand this is a story I am going share, but much as it pains me, WHEN I share it can be after we take this lunatic down." "Also, I am not going to be able to stay off the feeds without talking about this much longer. I've built up anticipation... did Candy broadcast about her video? Was she sharing her whole investigation with her followers? This jerk is almost definitely watching my feeds and waiting..."
"You're not being taken to the local Precinct House," he continues. "We're going to be swapping ident-tags when we hit the Mission/Central mainline tunnel, where another cruiser is waiting to take our place. I'm taking you to City Central. Detective Eteki will explain more when we get there." Emily raises her eyebrows and then squints but doesn't say anything. She's prepping her feed to switch to a recap of the past few days with overlays the footage with the most popular comments. There's also a banner apologizing for the replays but promising hot new content coming soon. When the cop car parks, she winks at the camera and she switches to this feed. She continues to record though. Emily? "I was sent a video file that may contain evidence that Carrie "Carrie On" Mendez was murdered. It also infers that myself, Cassidy Lane and the courier who brought me the file," she nods at BART "are potential targets. It may also imply that Carrie is not be the first victim, or that she IS and there are 4 more people in danger." "Your turn."
"Don't worry, I'm only out to ruin his life," Emily says glancing at BART.
Emily hasn't gotten much accomplished but she's been doing her best to LOOK like she's ignoring BART. She can't stifle the "heh" when Zerin says "stunning personality" though. She takes a second to give BART a look that she hopes reads as "I am so done with you"... then she turns to one of her cameras and goes live. "Hey everyone, thank you so much for your patience today. YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE what is going on. BUT, here's the thing, I can't tell you the whole story yet. I know, I know. Trust me, the wait will be worth it." "At the moment, I'm in limbo while I wait for a ride. While I'm waiting I want to hear from all of you. Have YOU ever witnessed a crime? Did you report it? If not, why? Sound off in the comments! Keep watching for the big reveal coming up! She does not bother setting up filler video this time and just lets it all run. She's still got it set so her companions are blurred as they haven't signed releases.
When the call ends Emily sits down and rubs her forehead. When BART finishes she looks up at all of them and sighs. She shakes her head and starts preparing to broadcast their ride to the police station. She starts making notes for addressing her followers. Once in the police car, she's planning to announce that she's stumbled on possible evidence of a murder and she's going to be helping the police get to the bottom of things. Out of respect for the families, she's not going to broadcast who or exactly what happened yet but she's going to bring everyone along for as much as she can.
HEY! I literally just found this section. OK, to answer the GM's question: Personally, I think I need to spend more time rereading previous posts before I post. I'm fairly certain I misremembered and caused the confusion myself.
Emily says, "We are currently safe but I am concerned that at least two of us are being targeted. No one has been injured. I'd like to request transport to the precinct office - there are three of us."
After another deep breath, Emily says, "Someone sent me a recording of Carrie "Carrie On" Mendez's death, and it appears that it was not an accident. The video also seems to be threatening myself and the courier who delivered the card. While checking to see if this thing is real I also found ties to Dwight Kaplan's death."
Emily takes a deep breath and presses whatever button she's been avoiding pressing to connect a call to the authorities. As she doesn't have a direct line for someone she's starting with whatever precinct is closest to her apartment. When someone answers she'll say "I need to speak to someone about evidence I have found of two possible murders."
"How paranoid is your circle about security? Living on livestream isn't exactly the most subtle way of existing. Emily scrunches up her face in disapproval at that. "Given enough time any security system can be interfered with, so I'd say 'access' might be relative. But I wouldn't say 'sabotage' sounds paranoid in this situation at all." Emily says, "It's not paranoia if someone uses a convoluted method to send you a creepy video anonymously..." Emily pauses for a second, cocks her head to one side, and finishes "...that's entertainment. I may be off crime thrillers for the rest of my life. " Emily then remembers she was going to call the cops...
Distracted again, Emily asks Avryl, "Avyrl? Are we sure there's no way that card or the reader has tracking on it? Did we check for that?"
Emily looks away from what she's doing because the curiosity is getting the better of her, "Zerin, Could someone have sabotaged that gear? That would mean they had access to their homes, right?"
Under the "Current/Former Partners and References" section, things get interesting, as both Carrie Mendez and Dwight Kaplan are listed. Emily reads that and thinks, "I'm an idiot... wait, Cassidy was involved with both of them?!?!" She starts dialing the cops and announces, "I think Cassidy Lane has a stalker that might be killing off people around her. I'm done messing around and I'm calling the authorities." "Avryl, BART, you probably want to take off. I'm sorry to have dragged you into this. Send me a bill when you're somewhere safe." "Zerin, I'll be out of your hair as soon as I can."
Emily shares this information with the group and then starts searching to see if she can find out WHERE Dwight died. However, a few seconds after starting that she suddenly swears out loud. Then she mumbles "I am such an A...grrrr." and changes gears. She is going to search for the name Cassidy Lane and try to find contact information for them. Gotta make sure they're alive. If they're still alive then she's going to call the cops.
"oh gawd this just gets better and better... Avryl? Is that something you can check?" I go back to searching obits...
Emily is going to wait to see what Avryl can find before doing anything else.
"Well, ONE something tells me that's what this mofo wants me to do. So no. He doesn't get that. TWO if he's planning to do something to either of us, I bet he's waiting until after we see the clip. So I'm not letting them know we've seen it." "And lastly, what we just watched? That's snuff. I don't deal in that crud. Yeah, I want ratings, and I want this story, but not like that. We're going to do a little investigating, then we're handing this over to the cops and we'll get our protective custody. "
Emily looks up from her budget app and says "Avryl, should I wait? What do you need from me? I want to get as much data as I can before we turn this over to the cops."
"I need to broadcast something soon but I need a good cover story. I am not putting what we just saw out there. No effin way." "Zerin is it ok if we hang out here a bit more since going back to my place is ill-advised? If you want us out of here just let me know, I'll put some feelers out. I'm sorry to have dragged you into this."
Emily just glares at BART for a second and then starts working on his payment.
Emily starts to collect her thoughts and says That was my door. That was BART's door... a murderer paid BART to bring me footage of a crime and then what.. THREATENS US? And why you BART? That was your door right?" Emily starts pacing... Oh Avryl, I'm gonna need to know everything you can tell me about that file. And I need to talk to Cassidy. And oh boy, we have to bring this to the authorities. Right?
Emily will post some old replay footage, maybe a montage from the day before, while they're watching the footage. Right before the video started Emily would have recorded herself looking into one of her cameras to say, "OK, this fiasco seems to have reached its finale! Let's take a look at what this wild goose chase has brought us." Emily makes a face when she realizes this is Carrie On's footage. She thinks to herself "Ugh, gotta reach out to her people to let them know I had no idea. Go on the record about it not being cool to air someone else's footage yada yada" After that final image appears on the screen, Emily looks around wide eyed at everyone in the room for a few seconds.
Emily grabs the group of dockside businesses and saves the data in a "story ideas" file. Then I'll see if any of the more technical socials have something I can share about SD cards.
Emily is going to take a few minutes to check on her feeds and making sure she still has content rolling. She's also doing a very cursory sweep for comments and mentions and the like.
"Avyril, I really appreciate that you gave it to him though. The harder it is for us to get into that damned chip the more curious I get!"" Emily says with a grimace. "I'm so sorry. I never expected this level of a fiasco. No matter what happens though I can spin this into a good story, even without live footage. So I will totally share ad revenue.
Emily sighs. "This has not helped my standing with him AT ALL has it?"
Emily says "Thank you SO much" to Jagger while patting Avryl on the shoulder. A very meaningful pat. Emily is barely suppressing the urge to squeal, while jumping up and down and clapping. Then she turns to BART and says, "How much for you grab the reader out of the locker and meet us back at Zerin's? I'll pay you for your extra time and send you on your way. And next time someone wants you to deliver something to me, outsource it."
Emily pipes in with, "We're looking for something that can read an old data card. Something called a MicroSD card. Or parts that Zerin can use to make a card reader. Can you help us out?"
"Works for me. Can we head there now? I really need to finish this up so I can release BART back into the wild."
