Focus Abi! Now's not the time to ask what countermeasures they have planned in case undead or shapeshifters or something try to infiltrate the festival. Just do the job and deal with the noise complaint... And then maybe ask about the countermeasures when you're in the Lieutenant's good books.
Name: Abi Klebrirndi
Abi grew up reading pulp mystery novels, and despite her family’s wishes for her to continue the family tradition of practicing medicine, she always knew she wanted to be a detective, like the heroes of those stories. Well, maybe not the heroes, they tended to be buff and athletic, with a taste for danger and a sometimes cavalier disregard of the rules, and Abi was none of those things, but she could be the diligent researcher who finds the last piece of the puzzle the hero needs to solve the mystery, or maybe even the plucky sidekick. Upon joining the guard, Abi was able to put the medical skills she learnt from her parents to good use, both in patching up her co-workers in the and in examining dead bodies, but reality wasn’t quite like the stories and most crimes, even those in the Wise Quarter of Absalom are rather mundane and banal. This didn’t deter Abi, who frequently came up with outlandish theories involving the Skinsaw Cult, Daemonic manipulation, or Undead predations being responsible for whatever the latest crime being investigated was. To date, none of these theories have been proven correct (although a few crimes such theories were concocted around are still unsolved). These theories soon developed Abi quite the reputation among the Learned Guard, one mitigated only by Abi’s otherwise good work. When the call for volunteers for the Edgewatch came out both Abi and her boss leaped at the chance – for Abi, any supernatural conspiracy in Absalom was sure to target the Radiant Festival, and for her boss it was the perfect chance to hand off responsibility for the excitable gnome. Abi is both excited and nervous about her first day on the beat, especially as she was rarely in a ‘front-line’ role in the Learned Guard. Mechanical Details::

Quirks:: Abi is still obsessed with the pulpy detective novels she read growing up, and continues to read (and occasionally write) such stories whenever she gets a chance. She’ll also make references to such stories whenever an applicable situation comes up in her day job, pointing out how the situation was resolved in that story. Due to this aforementioned love of stories, and her belief that people are fundamentally good, Abi also has a tendency to construct elaborate conspiracy theories involving the supernatural around quite simple crimes. Unlike the protagonists of the stories she reads, Abi definitely isn’t a cowboy cop and wherever she can will follows rule and regulations to the t and is somewhat of a teacher’s pet.

Here's my concept for Amne Simnes, a Sylph Mirror Witch (probably level 12 - 15 but not statted out yet) and believer in non-human solidarity (and superiority). Background:
Amne Simnes spent much of her early life as a slave in Qadira (I believe I read somewhere than owning geniekin slaves is a considerable status symbol among certain Keleshites but cannot recall where). Most of the other slaves, knowing the reputation sylphs have for gathering secrets, treated her poorly, in the (initially) mistaken belief that she was a snitch and a spy for the master.Eventually she decided that if everyone already thought her a tattletale, she might as well receive the benefits of being one as well as the disadvantages. Her considerable talent at gathering information and natural gift for magic caused her to quickly become one of her master's most prized possesions and when a freak gust of wind lead to his unfortunate demise, she ended up free and with control of a sizeable portion of her former master's trading network. As she advanced in the world of business she noticed that although her past was not unusual her present position was. Almost everyone of any wealth or importance was human (or possibly elf or dwarf), despite the fact that many non-human races lived for longer and had numerous innate advantages over humans. Such a state could not possibly be natural. Eventually it hit her, humans had achieved a position of dominance by sheer weight of numbers and the patronage of the now deceased God Aroden, and kept other races down, either by taking their land and condemning them to savage barbarity, as with the goblinoid races, or by encouraging assimilation, as in the case of the various plane-touched races. The Plan:
About 15 years ago Amne opened a school in [Taldor?]. Half finishing school, half magical academy, Amnes aimed to attract the children of minor nobles and important officials, as well as providing free scholarships for tieflings, aasimars, and other non-human races. In this way in time she would gain a large pool of manipulable alumni near to various centres of power, as well as a number of devout, hand picked followers. After all, when you live for over three times as long as humans do you can afford to be patient. More recently she has also began an experiment in raising a tribe of civilised goblins. It has not gone well so far, but the creatures amuse her, and could have their uses. The plan is to either create, or take advantage of some sort of crisis somewhere; such as war, rebellion, or some other power struggle; to seize control of a city, either openly or through puppets. This city will serve as a magnet for all who are dissatisfied with the tyranny of humans and will surely only continue to grow in power until the true, natural order is obtained. Afterall, humans have no Aroden to protect and shelter them now.
Personality:
Amne is arrogant, vain, and always thinks she knows best. She does however genuinely believe in helping people (as long as they are the right sort of people). The world in her eyes would be a much better place if more longer lived races, such as sylphs, were in charge, and if by way of achieving that noble goal she should become, say, an Empress in the process well that is just a happy coincidence. She naturally has a love of ferreting out secrets and is normally patient and cautious in her dealings, preferring to operate as a shadowy manipulator than to put herself at risk, although this sometimes clashes with her vanity and her desire to have people know just how clever what she has done is.
Note: Inspirations for this character motivations are based on Magneto (from the X-men) and Scar (from the Lion King)

I've just opened up the gameplay thread if anyone wants to do a little preliminary roleplaying. It isn't mandatory, I just made it to pass the time and possibly introduce an NPC or two if I feel like it. I've seen this done on a number of other threads where the PCs start within a large group of similar people (such as a school) setting and it seemed to go down quite well. Not participating will not harm your chances of selection but it will provide a chance to show more of your character's personality. |
