Egil claps Cnut on the shoulder, much too hard as two warriors might.

"An excellent tale, and well-told!" he roars as he takes two more full mugs of mead from the humming bard of a barmaid.

"Now, to continue our epic, we must drink another round! Or three! Or seven! It depends on how much you can hold, but I promise to drink you under the table this day, with tales told between each round!"

He drinks some more from his tankard, though this time he does not finish it in one go.

"I shall go next. When I was in Karlsgard, in the Lands of the Linnorn Kings, I was over-sized and strong from my youth. At twelve years of age, before I came of age, I held a shield for his brother Floki in a bloody battle with the minions of Baba Yaga! So bitter was the cold that my shield froze to my arm, and if a warrior left his sword outside overnight, he would find the cold had shattered it by the next morning. But I would not let my brother Floki win my share of the glory. As if the cold were not strange enough, the northern lights were so bright and sustained that they were mistaken for daylight. These events seemed like omens of the terror that was to come."

With a distant look in his eyes, he says [b]"Ice trolls, cold fey, frost giants--they all came at us, and but a lad I did not wield a blade. But I did save my brother from a small white dragon, which cleaved my shield in two and broke my arm. Ah, but a taste of the glory awaiting me!" he says.

Finishing his flagon, he says "You told a fine tale before! Tell me something else of yourself!"

Egil raises his tankard to Cnut. "The first requirement is do legendary things," he smiles, "starting with a drinking game. You must drink one tankard for each question you ask, and I shall do the same."

The large Ulfen man drains his tankard in one go, then smiles broadly again.

"Drink up! Now, of course it helps to know someone there, or a former member. But you know me now, do you not? Tell me--what have you done to earn a reputation? You better not say until you have finished your mead!"

Egil smiles broadly at his fellow skald and waves for Cnut to come over and join the conversation.

"From your own adventures?!" he asks a little too loudly. "Why, that is the best kind of saga--a tale with a ring of truth! A little puffery, a little embellishment, that is all well and good and makes for a fine telling. But if, at its heart, it is not true, then it may as well be a longship's oar dropped into the churning sea."

To his fellow Ulfen, he says "Indeed, I was a member of the Ulfen Guard. My brother Floki earned me a chance to join. I am no longer a member, though, for I seek a chance to make a name for myself, to be part of something bigger--the legends sung by skalds such as this fine one here! But if pointers you seek, pointers you shall have. What do you want to know?"

He waves for the bartender to bring drinks for the three of them.

"Perhaps we can start tonight--we will make a place in the tales with a drinking game! As you know, Ulfen mead is made from honey. Let us drink until it is no longer sweet! Though I shall buy the first drinks, with the tales I shall tell, you will beg to purchase me round after round so that I will continue the telling! Haha!" he exclaims boisterously.

A tall, muscular Ulfen man listens transfixed by the entertainer, lost in thought. When the bard completes the epic recital, the warrior stands and claps. Over six and a half feet tall and muscular, his well-groomed blonde hair frames a handsome face with a forked beard.

A greataxe, sword and shield lay near his table. His scale armor is emblazoned with a dragon on the shoulder guard, and the honorific ‘huscarl’ broach of the Ulfen Guard clasps his cloak.

'Do not go meekly into that hard fight.' An excellent line!

"Well told!" he exclaims as he walks toward the bard and strikes up a conversation.

"I am a bit of a warrior-poet myself," he says jovially. "Often the star of my own tales!" he adds boisterously.

He runs a hand down his forked beard. "The sagas of my people are similar to what you have sung--stories remembered of real people and real events, perhaps embellished for the retelling. Someday, the tales will be told of me! And when I've earned my place among the legends of my people, I will seek a warrior's death in battle! It will be glorious!"

He turns back to the bard, smiling broadly. "Tell me--where is this from? I have not yet heard it."

Sorry, a little late to the party!

Alright, I've dotted with this character, a former member of the Ulfen Guard. Interesting recruiting method, which seems appropriate for a heavy RP game.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry you're going through that. I hope things ease up for you.

If you're still accepting applicants, I'd like to submit Egil Forkbeard, Skald 1

I was accepted into a game a couple months ago, the GM and players basically posted introductions, and then the GM never came back. I'd love another shot at this.

Hey guys, it looks like we've been abandoned to the cold winter. I'm going to go ahead and hide this thread since I don't see much possibility a GM wants to pick up a game that had a couple dozen posts in it. If for some reason our GM comes back or it otherwise starts back up, I'd love a PM to let me know. It was a promising start! Best of luck!

I'd like to apply, since a group I was just accepted in last month already has a missing GM (hasn't posted in several weeks).

Do you know when applications are closing?

I think a replacement would be awesome, but I'm not sure there are many out there wanting to take a new campaign that has effectively had the opening scene.

Previously...

Egil looks back at the crowd after they pass.

"These ingrates seem far less friendly than they did last night," he says. "Perhaps I will not honor them with a tale upon our glorious return."

Currently...

As they approach the overturned carriage, Egil draws his greataxe.

"This scene of battle is one for the legends," he says. "My Ulfen countryman did well to escape at all," he adds.

He walks cautiously toward the overturned carriage, looking for signs that might help him determine what happened. However, it all seems a snowy blur.

A 20 diplomacy didn't get us an alchemist fire? Very well...

Egil's smile disappears as Tessaraea declines to give them any alchemist fire.

"It will be your loss instead of your gain, then," the Ulfen warrior tells her. "Instead, I shall proclaim your establishment the stingiest purveyor of alchemy throughout the land! None will send for your wares, or if they do, they will send them back," he adds.

He exits the shop and notes that the goat had been chewing on the strap of his backpack he had left by the door.

"Curse you, confounded goat!" he says, kicking toward it and sending it scurrying away. "Perhaps we'll have chevon for dinner tonight!" he growls.

The goat bleats at him from a safe distance.

Changing the subject, he turns back to Ylbanna. "I will pull my weight and more. I've enough strength to help you pull yours, as well. You'll buy me that ale...you shall see."

I don't have any new purchases...ready to roll!

Egil takes the sword gladly. It was of fine material, he could see. I'm guessing it's not masterwork or anything, so I've just put it down as a plain cold iron longsword.

"I will avenge you of these foes or die in glorious battle! This I promise!" Egil grins.

He straps the sword to his waist, where it sits with a couple of other weapons.

As the others proclaim their willingness to also go, Egil looks around as if he hadn't been expecting a team effort.

"If we are to travel together, we should be introduced!" he says loudly.

"I shall begin. You have the great pleasure of battling with Egil Forkbeard, champion of the north. I am fated for great deeds, which will only be eclipsed by my telling of the tale! Join me in saving this Lady Argentea, and afterward you shall each have the opportunity to buy me an ale!" he says with a broad smile.

He turns to Tessaraea. "We would take a few of these fires in a bottle, and after they burn our enemies to a crisp, I shall proclaim your establishment the finest purveyor of alchemy throughout the land! Kings will send for your wares!" he boasts.

Egil listens to his fellow Ulfen grimly.

"You fought well and made your people proud," he tells the man. "Someday, you will earn a glorious death in battle. But your time to return to Vallenhall is not yet, friend."

He looks over at the blade. "It would be an honor for me to carry on the fight with your weapon," Egil says as he hefts it. "Unless one of these would rather," he says with a look at the group.

He looks the bodyguard in the eye. "I have just left service to the Ulfen Guard," he says. "I, for one, will carry on this fight for you. I do not covet riches, but I do covet the glory I would receive for rescuing Lady Argentea. Tales will be told of this day!" he smiles.

Ylbanna, I think you're the only other one that could put the blade to good use. I did think it was kind of cool for the fellow Ulfen bodyguard to take the blade, but if you would rather have it, let me know.

The previous evening...

A tall, blonde, and handsome Ulfen man had only been in town for a day. He had spent the previous evening entertaining a handful of listeners with heroic legends of his people and his exploits with the Ulfen Guard.

"...and with that, Floki fled into the darkness, a score of deceived women chasing him away!" the Ulfen man said at the conclusion of his story.

The group had laughed and clapped. One man even hands him a silver or two for his efforts, and ale flowed freely, with others paying.

"Many thanks!" he had said. "I will continue the tales of Floki tomorrow night! Perhaps I will also tell something more serious, like the epic of Freydís the Boneless and the Valkyries! It will be your pleasure to hear more and perhaps buy me a another drink!" he bellowed. "Tell your friends that Egil Forkbeard, warrior of the north, is not in town for much longer!"

Currently...

His hair is well-groomed with braids, silver clasps, and a forked beard. A little groggy from the previous night, he exits the inn carrying a greataxe over his shoulder. He wears worn, mismatched scale armor, with a broach of the Ulfen Guard clasping his cloak. A longsword is strapped to his waist and a shield to his back.

A warrior's warrior, the Egil looks like he would be well-suited slaying dragons. Or at least raiding coastal villages.

He eats an apple as he exits the inn, and several of the patrons from the night before accost him with information about the strange events happening in town, as well as the mercenary brought into town.

"I used to be a bodyguard myself," he boasts. "I protected the bearer of the Primogen Crown myself. I would speak to this warrior as one who knows the dangers he faces. Lead me to him, compatriots!"

GM:
For my familiar, I was planning to have it be a large goat.
Heiðrún (or Heidrun) is a goat in Norse mythology, which consumes the foliage of the tree Læraðr and produces mead for the einherjar. First of all, the goat isn't actually my familiar yet (will be next level), and I'm planning to have a love/hate relationship with the goat. Egil thinks it's a trick from the gods to torment him. It saved his life, so he's not planning to kill it, but it's an obnoxious goat that eats everything, bleats when he want it to be quiet, rams into people, and is dumb as a stick. I would absolutely love it if you have some control for flavor purposes. I'd imagine in combat I would control it to make things easier. I would probably also have it do some things for role-play, but if you want to join me in role-playing the hellion goat Heidrun, be my guest!

GM Baba Yaga:
Also, I did switch out Power Attack for the Toughness feat. Thanks for clarifying that.

How would you feel about me switching out Scribe Scroll for Extra Performance like they do for Skalds in Pathfinder Society? I don't find much use for Scribe Scroll on a spontaneous caster. It's not a big deal, but thought I'd check.

GM Baba Yaga:
I was definitely planning on 'just passing through' for my background in Heldren. However, I'm also very eager to be challenged, so anything happening where I might follow any challenge fate sends my way, I would be eager to pursue. I'm trying to find myself at the moment.

On another note, thanks for being willing to allow me to switch my level to start, but I've changed my mind and will stick with Skald for 1st level and will take Bloodrager next level. It only makes 2 hp difference long-term. Aside from the hp, the other thing I wanted from Bloodrager was to establish this love/hate relationship with this goat familiar, but I think I could do that with it just following me for now and play it out role-playing. It won't have anything to do mechanically until I have my Bloodrager level.

Can we open up gameplay for dotting?

Many thanks!!!

Hey all, glad to be selected! I look forward to some fun role-playing.

I should note that I have a funeral on Monday morning, so I may be a little slow off the blocks. However, I can generally post multiple times during weekdays, and will catch up quickly.

I should also note that my build is going to be a Skald 19/ Bloodrager 1 (though I'm sure we won't get quite that high). Because I only have a d8 and my familiar is going to be a big part of my role-playing, I asked the GM if I could start with the bloodrager level. So I'll be changing from Skald to Bloodrager for level 1 before we start, though the rest of my levels will all be Skald (I do see we already have a Bloodrager...my RP will be the same as if I'm a Skald).

Anyway, if anyone sees any connections we might have, let me know. Looking forward to this.

Hey there, Egil Forkbeard, Skald 1, at your service.

I built this character for a different Reign of Winter campaign but didn't make the cut (hence my rapid completion). I would really love a spot here, and usually post several times a day. If you are looking for consistent players, I've been here for around five years and have over 19,000 posts.

This character would make an excellent 5th man for the group. Thanks for your consideration!

Liberty's Edge

Egil Forkbeard, Human Skald 1, at your service.

Egil would be a great 5th man for any group, and the plan is to be a Skald all the way through except for 1 level of Bloodrager. He would fill the role of off-tank, party buffer, and knowledge guru. In character, he would be a boastful seeker of glory and teller of tales. Backstory, appearance, and personality are included on the character sheet.

I'd love a spot in this campaign. In the event it matters, I have over 19,000 posts and have been here for about 5 years, so I'll be in for the long-haul.

Thanks for your consideration!

Liberty's Edge

Okay, I think I'll bite on this one. I've been part of a number of campaigns here that fizzle out after a few months, so the fact that this is re-recruiting and still going is interesting to me.

I'll submit Egil Forkbeard, my Ulfen Skald.

I do have 1 level of Bloodrager, but all the rest of the levels will be Skald. Though he isn't currently the best party face, by next level I receive Versatile Performance, which ties my Diplomacy with my Perform (Oratory) skill (already at +7 and will stay maxed).

The focus of the character is on buffs, skills, and should be able to help with versatility. I think I've answered most of the questions you asked in my Background section of my character sheet, but any of the story is open for expanding or changing to fit the campaign.

I did put an 8 in Wisdom. Honestly, the Skald is so MAD that I would ask for an exception to having no attribute less than 10. I think reducing any of my other scores would adversely affect the character, and no score is higher than 16.

I'm in the Mountain time zone, and am part of a couple of other long-term adventure paths (I have over 18,000 posts on the boards over probably 5 years). Thanks for the consideration.

Egil smiles at Amieko, then turns to the sheriff.

"Any word on the attacks? What has come of the investigation?" the skald asks.

Egil lets out a hearty roar, glad that the situation has been defused.

"Sometimes you must either laugh or cry, and I'm glad you have chosen to laugh," he says.

"Does your father live here in town? What was he going on about, anyway?"

Take it easy man! We'll be here when you are ready. :)

"Do not be too hard on him in front of Ameiko," Egil says. "She is clearly upset, and he remains her father."

The skald goes back to his breakfast, unsure how this day could have started worse.

It's all good...sorry you are going through that.

My mom has had recurring dental issues, and it's awful and unfortunately expensive, too!

Best of luck to you, and thanks for the update on your condition. We'll be on hold until you're feeling up to it!

Egil's effort to distract the inn from the confrontation in an order to help them both save face seems to have failed.

"Well, perhaps it is a tale for another time," the skald says. "Ameiko, is there anything we can do to help? This is a difficult situation," he says. "Surely he will come around."

Indeed.

"Well deserved, Ameiko!" Egil whispers, though not loud enough that the man could hear. "And well delivered, at that!"

Sensing the need for a light-hearted distraction, the skald pounds his flagon on the table, calling the room to attention.

"Have I yet told the tale of The Lay of Thrym? Mjölnir is stolen by the frost giant Thrym, who demands Freyja's hand in marriage as a ransom."

The skald tells the tale, hoping it will distract from the argument.

Egil laughs heartily at Bogan, apparently not willing to take offense from this crazy old foreigner.

"Ameiko has her work cut out for her. I have a suggestion to improve her business...a bouncer."

Sorry for a slow weekend. A big remodel project and Father's Day meant no time for posting.

I'd be sorry to see Anca go. I will say that as far as pacing goes, I'd like to see it a little faster myself. Time for role playing is great, but I usually like to see the role playing in the context of whatever is happening to us, not just spending time quizzing the other players.

Having done this for a few years, I'd say that if the DM and players all post most weekdays and maybe once per weekend, we're in for the long haul.

Anyway, having fun and hope we can keep it going.
