That's me.
I had been part of Cirle's previous "Trail of Cthulhu" game, which ran for more than 3 years! I had missed his PMs about this new one, but he'd said there was still room.
My inclination is to have a character that is a professor of ancient languages at Miskatonic, but I am open to suggestions if you guys think you need a different character type for balance.
I am thinking Professor of Ancient Languages at Miskatonic, but if you need another type of character, then I will be willing to play anything you like.
Cirle,
I sent you a PM.
Thanks,
The character previously known as Edward R. Carter, III.

I'm definitely interested in the CoC game!
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
This has been an awesome game. Thanks so much for all the hard work GMing us and adapting the adventure for this rule set. This is the first PbP I’ve ever had run to completion.
As I said above, I’d love another game. I’ll watch the site and see if the rest of you are interested.
Again, thanks,
Keith

While the downer ending is probably better from a Lovecraftian perspective, I think I’ll vote for the “upbeat” ending since that gives closure to the espionage part of the story.

Once it is obvious that the amulet is not going to save them, Edward takes the artifact and heaves it into the lake.
He falls to his knees and begins to quiver. "The thing, he says. "There really was a thing down in the trenches.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
I would love an actual Call of Cthulhu game. I have the rules, but have never played.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
"No!!!" Edward screams as the LCDR fades into oblivion. The old writer holds out the amulet in a -- probably hopeless -- attempt to channel any supernatural powers the talisman might have to save the LCDR's life.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Contiuity question: Earlier, when Edward saw the amulet on the ground, I had him grab it, and then say he was throwing it in the lake. However, that was during my confusion of where exactly Edward was relative to the water's edge. So, does he still have the amulet?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
I assume this game is winding down, but I would enjoy another (Cthulhu, PFR, D&D, whatever). What do you guys think? I wonder if the person playing the LCDR is still checking in.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
As if waking from a nightmare, Edward swings his head about wildly.
What the bloody hell? I was in France! Now, now... I’m back... here! Emrys, what in the name of Mother Mary is going on here?
Edward's white hair is wild, his blue eyes are bulging.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Is there anything that Edward can do, other than cackle and gibber like a madman?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward, sweating from the intense heat, gets to his knees, grabs the amulet.
It’s almost as if he can’t NOT pick it up. He NEEDS it.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward opens one eye.
"Cousin? Cousin, wh'tis? Please don’t tell em those ghastly farmhands have returned."
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
I'm guessing Edward cannot see the light, as it were, since he’s lying facedown with his hands over his head
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
At the sound of the shotgun blast, Edward throws himself to the ground and covers his head.
”They’re bringing up the big mortars!” Edward yells.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Stability Test out of curiosity: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Edward blinks rapidly, taking account of his surroundings.
Injured? Injured... oh, yes, that would explain the pain. Seeing the field medic couldn’t hurt. They are very good. And there is this one nurse...
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
"Emrys? Emrys, is that you? What in the bloody hell are you doing in France?"
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward, blreay-eyed and shaking, resists the pull of the stranger who’s grabbed him by the arm in the trench.
"Away?! I can’t get away! I have to hold our position. The Hun will will be coming over the anytime now. If I leave I’ll be a deserter, a DESERTER!"
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
I goofed and forgot to finish my question. Do the rules specify what a -4 means? Is Edward now a blubbering idiot? Suicidal? Violent? Unconscious? Anything like that?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward's Stability is now at -4. How does a stat that low affect him?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
I have no points left to spend in Stability
Stability: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Edward drops to his knees.
"By all that is holy, the serpent! It slithers! It slithers just like the thing in the trench!"
Edward begins to tremble and sob.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Athletics Check: 1d6 ⇒ 5
They should really mow their grass. This is annoying, Edward says to no one in particular.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Sorry about that, I thought Edward was closer to the water's edge
Edward makes his way through the weeds and brambles as if he were being drawn to the lake's shore, much in the same way he was drawn to the thing in the trenches in 1916.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward kneels down, peers into the water. He takes a whiff to see if it smells. Then, for a reason even he can’t explain, he dips the medallion into the loch.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
LCDR HRS is the sanest man alive!
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Something catches Edward’s attention out of the corner of his eye.
Sense Trouble: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
My eyes and ears must be playing tricks on me, he thinks.
He stays put, the murky water of the lake lapping at his feet.
Does Edward need to make the Stability check since he didn’t make the Sense Trouble check?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
I don’t want to metagame, but it does seem logical that Edward would turn to help soothe his cousin's nerves if Edward can also hear the shrill sounds. If that’s the case, then Edward will back up from the shoreline.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward carries a standard issue British revolver. I'm afraid I've lost track of his bullet count, though. I remember researching the pistol early on during our game. I can't find the website I got the info from, but the Wikipedia entry is close enough for government work :) .....
"The Webley Revolver (also known as the Webley Top-Break Revolver or Webley Self-Extracting Revolver) was, in various marks, a standard issue service pistol for the armed forces of the United Kingdom, and the British Empire and Commonwealth, from 1887 until 1963. The Webley is a top-break revolver and breaking the revolver operates the extractor, which removes cartridges from the cylinder. The Webley Mk I service revolver was adopted in 1887 and the Mk IV, rose to prominence during the Boer War of 1899–1902. The Mk VI, introduced in 1915 during the First World War, is perhaps the best-known model."

Edward pulls out the medallion and trembles as he stares at its emblem of a snake coiling around an inverted trident. He looks up at the coiling fog around the standing stone, back at the coiling snake. He shivers.
There must be some connection between this unthinkable scene and the engraving on this medallion. What do you think, Gentlemen?
Edward holds the medallion out in his palm so the others can see the detail.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward take a deep breath of the cool Scottish air. He begins to feel a little more invigorated, and less like a man who's had the bloody hell beaten out of him.
He approaches the stone slabs cautiously, with an academician's eye.
He uses a point of this skill
Evidence Collection: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Despite the obvious fact that it’s there in the first place, does Edward see anything about the scene or scenery that seems unusual or out of place?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Be on your guard, gentlemen. I do not think we we lucked out. I think we were LED here, unless paranoia has taken me over.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward uses a point of Theology to see if he remembers anything about such a fog from reading ancient, worm-eaten manuscripts
Theology: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward races to catch up with his companions before the villagers have a chance to regroup. He brings up the rear. A tunnel through the fog is weird, but it's a bloody sight better than a shoot out with a bunch of unhinged cultists.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
There’s no way on God's green earth that Edward is "coming out with his hands up." Wounded, scared, fatigued and just plain fed up, Edward fires his pistol at the ground, hoping to scare off the thugs.
He turns to his partners: Lets get out, NOW! and races to the window after firing his pistol.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
I assume he's talking to Edward. Before I answer, can you give us another quick sketch of where everybody is? I've lost my mental picture of the surroundings.
Glad Paizo's site is finally back up!
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward draws his pistol while, at the same time, seriously doubting if he has the energy for a fight.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
That would be too many to engage even if we were all healthy. As it stands, we have no choice but to retreat, Edward thinks.
He whispers to his companions: Quietly, Gentlemen, Quietly.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward, being the healthiest of all, keeps watch while his two wounded comrades attempt to escape through the back window.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Are the LCDR and Emrys still there when he wakes up?
Do I need to roll for listening to the sounds?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
My thought, as far as being in character for Edward is concerned, is that he is exhausted, injured, scared and pissed off.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
As a matter of fact, I am.
Edward takes aim at the cultist and pulls the trigger.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Just to be on the safe side, Edward backs up so that he is out of range.
The candlelight flickers.
"You'll be cutting no one into any kind of ribbon, so you may as well tell me what is going on. I want it all, the whole story. Start talking."
Edward makes sure the man can see the barrel of the gun.
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Is Edward surprised, a la D&D? Or can he take an action, namely shooting the cultist?
Male Human Author of Planetary Romances
Edward uncovers it with the legs of the milking stool, drops the stool, pulls his pistol and inches closer as he continues to hold the candle out in front of him.
