Digits grins mischievously. "I suppose there's only one way to find out, eh?" Despite the evasive answer, Digits treats Chroknight's shoulder would with expert care, and within a few moments has a glowing fungus soothing the wound. "In a pinch I'd offer to take the spike out too...but this school's probably got someone better than my field first aid skills."

As Indy flies off Digits turns to the others. "Sooo...what's next? I still wouldn't mind knowing exactly who that Shard bozo is. I gather he's got a real rep around here?"

Is that supposed to be some sort of solution?!"

With a chuckle, Digits says, "I mean attacking him like that was dumb as f&^k, but I thought the kiss was genius! Did you see how it threw him off? That's the move of a survivor.

"I've done dumb stuff myself, more than I can count, so I get it. No shade for acting like a fool. Sometimes staying alive is the best you can shoot for...and I'm glad you survived, Chroknight.

Digits had mostly been watching with interest, but things are starting to seem like even more of a mess.

It's not my mess, of course, but...

They turn to the friends around them and say, "Pssst. What should I know about this Shard character? And Ballista?

"And maybe more importantly: Should we be getting out of here?"

Digits watches Chroknight's gambit, grinning. Keep him on his toes. I like it!

Digits fiddles with their portal gun and–if it looks like Chroknight could use it–remodulates it in a way that they hope will destabilize Shard's portal (at least for a moment), distracting him.

Spend 1 Team to get Chroknight to a 7, if they don't get there on their own through influence.

Archie walks out of class alongside Indarius and Digits massaging a bruised elbow. "Hell yeah I could eat, making that many dupes always makes me hungry, for spicy food. I hope they've got like some Szechuan cuisine or something." He groans at the dull ache in his elbow.

"To the cafeteria then!"

Phalanx aka Archie Greene wrote:
"Say, that portal gun seems pretty useful, you should show me how it works so I can make 'em, then I can dual wield them. That'd be f$%#ing awesome. I'd be like Chell from Portal 2, but slightly cooler cause I'd have two portal guns." He says while motioning like he has two portal guns and makes some sounds with his mouth.

Digits casually tosses the gun to Archie. "Give it a look! Honestly, it's a prototype that I liberated from a Trynxus R&D lab. I've been trying to reverse engineer it for a while now. The main thing I've nailed down so far is that the quantum entanglement matrix is calibrated on a delicate n-dimensional crystal that was grown using xenomycological lattices in zero-gravity. That much is fairly straightforward...but energy signatures also suggest the lattices might need to grow while bathed in a symmetry-breaking cascade like the one that happened when matter first won out over antimatter, shortly after the big bang. Leave it to the f^&king Trynxus to harvest that!...

"Heeey, speaking of you making things...can you just make a hot meal to order? Does anything weird happen when people eat things you create? (Bad-weird, I mean; not good-weird.)"

Phalanx aka Archie Greene wrote:

Once they're about halfway to the cafeteria he leans over to Digits.

"By the way, you're from outer space right? You ever smoked before? You have any alien drugs I could try?" He whispers to Digits so that Indy doesn't hear. If he's there.

(Not catching on to the importance of whispering) Digits replies, "You know it's surprisingly disappointing how few space drugs are compatible with human anatomy. Some are just sad...and a lot are pretty fatal, though I've developed a pretty tough gut biome over the years. If you've got fun Earth substances, I'm happy to give'm a shot.

"The main thing I could offer in return is some of these mushrooms. They've helped me see some pretty sweet things–and were key, honestly, to me making as much progress as I have so far on figuring out how this Interstitial Quantopological Tunnel Projector works."

Advanced Combat

Digits isn't a stranger to roughing it up. Since childhood they've passed through their share of 'retched hives of scum and villainy', and the crew of the Madcap drills together some as well...

...but Digits quickly learns that Terrier runs a tighter and tougher drill than anything Cap'n Tayo put the Madcap's crew through.

At the beginning, Digits manages to dodge and weave, and uses their portal gun to create mayhem: aiming to cause charging robots to suddenly bash into each other or the walls, and to redirect projectiles toward ones that stand still.

After a while though, their muscles are starting to ache. A robot strobes them with a dazzlingly bright light, disorienting Digits for a few crucial seconds. They drop and roll instinctively into a portal...but pop up too close to another robot, that manages to slam Digits in the gut, winding them.

When they walk out of class, sore and tired, they turn to Archie and Indy and say, "Oooof! That was a workout, eh? I'm starving!"

They aim to keep up a brave face...but they truth of it is that the onslaught (and the shear length of fighting for so long, when they're used to cutting and running) leaves them feeling insecure.

"Oh, well, the constellation is made of a bunch of stars. Some aren't really that near the others, but there are a few interesting ones in it."

Dropping into a more confiding tone, they continue, "A lot of people would tell you Cygnus X-3 isn't that interesting as a place, but I think it's gorgeous. The Wolf-Rayet star–that's what my translator says it's called here, anyway–is pretty unique.

"Cygnus X-1 is a more common destination, because the Gurblu thrive in high X-Ray environments, and use the black hole as an anchor for one of the most popular networks of artificial wormholes...but to me it lacks the wow factor of Cygnus X-3."

When Cygnus explains a bit about herself, Digits nods with interest. [b]"So you have a family of people with...magic swan powers? I don't know the story, but that's pretty sick! I don't know anything about magic, really. I think it's way more common on Earth than most places.

"Speaking of which, I guess I'm not technically an alien. I was born on Earth, but kinda accidentally hitched a ride into the stars on a dimension-shifting mushroom that can traverse the transgalactic mycorrhizal network without needing to worry about overly-patrolled wormholes. I guess it was a weird childhood, but I had fun, mostly. The Madcap is pretty good at staying a step ahead of trouble. Now I'm back on Earth though, for the first time since I was teeny.

"I don't exactly have powers, but I'm pretty handy with tech, especially mycorrhizatech...and I managed to swipe this hear portal gun from a Trynxus lab, and have even managed to improve on it a bit.

"What's the inside scoop on Daedalus? How long've you been here? Who did I need to watch out for?"

"I'm Digits, by the way. No code name; I'm not sure I really get them...but I maybe don't get a lot about Earth so far. Cygnus is a sweet one though. Have you ever been? I personally think the Wolf-Rayet star in Cygnus X-3 is one of the most beautiful sites within twenty kiloparsecs, easy!"

Slowing down (and putting their portal gun on their nightstand) they add, "So, uh, tell me about yourself!"

"Woah! That's straight from the netherrealm!! It's probably drawn to–maybe even created by–the darkest and most vile impulses in our minds.

"DD, maybe you can fight it by facing your own dark thoughts?"

Seeing the camera shoved in DD's face again, Digits adds, "Or I could try this!" And attempt so interject a portal in front of Devil Diva's face in order to redirect the camera toward the ceiling.

While it had taken Digits a while to relax into the photo shoot, eventually they find themselves having fun camping it up.

When it turns nefarious, they're caught off guard. Unable to reach for their portal gun or omniprocessor sporebelt, they sigh inwardly. Then they do their best to tune out the surface world around them and tune into the deeper mycelial network.

How am I gonna get out of this one?

Out of this world: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 1) + 2 = 9
When you plug into the mycelial network and tune out this world, roll + Freak. On a hit, you come to a new, interesting insight about your current problems and situation; the GM will tell you what. On a miss, you realize something dangerous or terrible; the GM will tell you what, and shift your Labels accordingly.

On the whole, Digits has been a bit quiet and distant, drinking mushroom tea and tinkering with their portal gun...and just looking off into the stars a bunch. Do I really belong on this planet? No one here really understands the life I've led...

Digits isn't quite sure what to make of the photoshoot at first, but eventually decides they're into it. The energy that DD, Empyrean, and Gui generate with their earnest mugging is electric. When Indy leaves, Digits shifts closer to the center, beside Empyrean.

In the thick of the shoot they reach into a pouch to pull out a greyish puffball the size of a child's fist. They squeeze it upward and suddenly a glitterstorm of phosphorescent purple and lavender spores dance around the whole group, and Digits gives their best grin as they–for the moment–feel like they're genuinely a part of the group.

Digits had truly meant to go to school today...but come on! For a podunk planet, they made some pretty F'd up media here! And really, how important is Earth school in the Grand Scheme, if I'm gonna be back in the stars before too long, right? And what the f&^k was Starbuck even thinking in that last scene. OK, just one more episode!

They'd put on Battlestar Galactica last night, thinking that watching Earth's ideas of life in space would be a good chuckle before bed...and then got totally sucked in. (Unrealistic, sure, but who cares!)

They were already more than an hour late to school by the time they finished the two-part season finale–and they hadn't slept a wink yet–so they were woken by Statian's alert. Digits pulled on their clothes and grabbed their portal gun, but everything was over before they could get there.

[To: group chat]
Digits: Sorry, was sleeping when that alert came in. Is the fight still on?
Digits: In my defense, none of you warned me how addictive BSG is. Yall have had years to digest Earth media. Maybe you've built up some natural immunity to binging shows or something? I'm defenseless!
Digits: Where you at now? I can come by.
Digits: Can you f&^kin believe Baltar got elected? And Boomer shoots A?! What's next?!?!? No spoilers!

End of Session: Grow closer to Andromeda (giving her influence): She was the first to not be a downer or scarey-flughwum when Digits suggested pranking Nimbus' gang back (which is what any self-respective star scavenger would know to do in an instant, right??) Still seems like a hassle, and you gotta admit it kinda reflects poorly on your planet to have to go to the trouble, especially if your whole in-costume thing is just wanting to make things better...but I can go put on some of those Earth clothes you helped me pick at Goodwill."

Whispering (though perhaps not terribly quietly) to Andromeda and Phalanx, they add "And we totally are going to plan a prank! But we can chat when Gui's not around, if he'd rather."

When Digits takes off to their quarters they do it at a dash, clearly having fun, shooting a portal into the far wall and then another at their feet, dropping through, tumbling, and then shooting another. Minutes later they're back dressed in jeans, a baggy grey sweatshirt, and some well worn hiking boots. They've pulled their hair into two puffs. "So, what's a taco?"

Watching Andromeda, they ask, "So...you can't really turn that forcefield thing off, is that it? That's rough. I mean, being super strong and kinda invulnerable is totally cosmic–it'd have helped me on the Madcap more times than I can count–but..." They trail off, not quite sure what to say next.

C&S: 2d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 4) - 1 = 4 Remind me, what happens when one biffs on C&S? The basic moves sheet doesn't list anything.

Then the last moments before being knocked out return to him in a flash. "Statian! Is she okay?"

"Yup! Thanks to you. In fact," Digits casts a meaningful glance over at Statian and Indy's awkward conversation, "I think maybe she's better than OK. Is she blushing? That's adorable. And she could clearly use something to spice up her life."

Looking back at Gui, she adds, "That bruising you took looked nasty though. Good thing you had a...what do you call her? Warrior Princess? To heal you up.

"I...I gotta admit, watching you do that scared the friggin' spores out of me. You're not invulnerable like Andromeda. What you did was brave. Dumb as a puffball, mind you, but brave.

"I'm not sure I'm up for that kind of shit, honestly. I like that yall go out of your way to help people. It's bad ass, and I kind of want in...But I sure don't want to get creamed in the process."

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, mark a condition (INSECURE), give them (Gui) Influence over you, and mark potential.

Digits watches with interest. They pull their myceliospectrocosmiscope out of their sporebelt, squint through it, and say, "Hold on there. There's a 350 micron gap in that seal. Not much, but if you smooth it over a bit...there, that looks better!"

"Oh, vacuous void, f^&k that!"

Digits watches Gui–the first person, so far, to really go out of his way to get them oriented–get buried after heroically saving Statian.

They look for a way to use their portal gun to free him. (perhaps shooting him out from under? Or dropping a portal above his body for the rubble?

"Oh hells, No! Those things look nastier than the Gangrenous pus-grubbers of Arcturus Prime."

Digits projects an exit portal on the ceiling, as far behind the plague doctors as they can, and then starts blasting the nearest leeches through into it, sending them dropping behind enemy lines.

Sam's gaining XP by the second!

"Oh, I can help with that!"Digits fiddles with their omniprocessor sporebelt, sending streams of mycelial noise to interleave with the stream Statian is sending.

"How do you like that weirdness, Governess?"

"Woah. Not bad holo-sim tech! Though maybe a bit fragile?" Digits glances as Statian. "Do you think you fried it? If so...awesome! They totally deserved it."

Looking at Andromeda (and understanding the look on her face but quite what she's talking about), Digits adds, "And, yeah, bit of an a&$hole move. What's this 'Department' thing? Bad news?"

Digits gasps as the wave of noise finally ends. They look at the damage Indy's cold has done and decide maybe this is their moment.

They aim their portal gun deep underwater, and then above and behind the giant, attempting to launch a torrent of water down on it from an angle behind its walls.

"It's bedtime, big guy!"

"Statian! There's someone watching. With computers, I think. Can you hack the--"and then the monster opens its mouth again and the blast rolls over them.

Digits looks up: There's Indy and Andromeda, still fighting through this barrage. And Empyrean and Gui, helping the others. These Earthlings are willing to risk so much. Should I?

––but the memory returns of all the hard lessons Digits has learned aboard the Madcap, outrunning the raging wars: No. Smart move is always to stay safe. Look for a chance to strike, or else flee.

––and in that moment, they cover their ears and grind their teeth, as the wall of sound almost knocks them onto their back.

I'll get my chance...

"Woaah!"

Digits opens their eyes, and finds they see everything differently: colorful gossamer threads connecting the monster to...something nearby. "Magmordius is just being controlled by someone or something very nearby. They're watching all of this. I think if we can find and stop them, we may end the show."

Assess: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 1) + 2 = 8 how could we best end this quickly? --> hoping to follow the filaments and discover "the man behind the curtain"

Belatedly noticing that there are several magmites running toward them, Digits shoots a portal up onto the side of the bridge, facing the water, then–as the magmites close on them, they open new portals under the feet of the charging magmits, sending them tumbling though...and the out the side of the bridge to fall into the water.

Digits blinks at the massive lava creature. "That thing is bigger than a Genkorian Flugglepod. But you know what they say? The bigger they are, the more likely to fall into a gravity well!"

When Indy announces a plan, they smile. "On it!"

Digits pulls a small mushroom out of their sporebelt, pops it in their mouth, and closes their eyes: dipping into the sub-ether rhizosphere, hoping to glance the unseen here and discover an insight that could help them save the most earthlings.

On a 10+ you can also shift your own Labels accordingly to match your new understanding. Digits is fully on board with protecting civilians, and with following Indy's lead.

Digits' confused look dissolves as Gui corrects their misunderstanding. "Oh, right, you were talking about yesterday.

"So you haven't faced the Sporocyte Rhizastrophe?" They nod to Andromeda, "But you two have?" Digits nods to DD and Indy. "And you helped actually drive them off of your world?" (Digits pauses for a second, wondering, 'Your world?' or should I say 'our?'...but just cuz this is where I was born, who knows how long I'll be around. Hey, the whole GALAXY is my world, right?? Still, I wonder...

"How did you manage it? Mostly when the Madcap meets the Sporocyte Rhizastrophe–or Trynxus, or the Geerthi Regency, for that matter–we hightail it further into space. Fighting the Deathcaps has always seemed like a good way to become fertilizer."

Digits looks back and forth at the kids they've fallen in with, checking them out.

Fruubas warned me that Earth wouldn't be weird enough for me, but some of these kids seem like they've got potential.

Digit's curiosity is piqued when the Deathcaps come up.

"Wait, what now? You fought on the side of the Deathcaps? What does that even mean?" Digits sounds more curious than concerned.

At Indy's words, Digits has an odd mix of feelings. Colliding in their head simultaneously are a the pleasant surprise of Hey, he included me in the team!, and What makes him think he gets to say if I'm part of this team?

"Whhuuuuuughhh"

Digits woke, looked at their buzzing communicator and ran their fingers through their hair. It's gonna take a while to get used to the day/night schedule on this ball of dirt, isn't it? Looks like everyone's been up for a while.

Whelp! No time like the present to learn a bit about the old Home Planet, right?

Digits pulls on their suit and is thinking about what to type when they hear commotion in the hall.

Tucking the communicator in a pocket they shrug, Even better, sounds like the crew's here.

They projects a self-holo to pick their afro, then tuck their pick into their hair and take in the folks around them. They note that most of their new acquaintances know this Nimbus and Half-Pipe.

When they see Gui they say, "Hey! Thanks for teaching me last night about burgers, fries and...milk shakes, was it? Would you call that a classic Earth meal?"
