"Ehm, please. This has been a difficult time. The mayor was in an impossible position. And he makes a valid point. Kelseph was responsible for many deaths, including the town's most prominent citizen. These are hard questions that must be asked."

"The person being carried by Vegazi is the leader of the Hell's Fury tribe, an orc named Kelseph. She is also Vegazi's mother. She is the one who has been sending attacks against your town and citizens, and it was she who demanded the blood of her own daughter. She had enthralled herself to a powerful devil who offered to satisfy her dreams of power, but in the end all she managed to accomplish was to decimate her tribe and her family. She is a wicked creature, but she is also to be pitied for her mad folly."

"Terrin, I'm glad we encountered you first. There are some things that must be handled delicately with your fellow townsfolk. I think you did the arithmetic incorrectly on Daylin. You subtracted 9 HP from him instead of adding it back to him on the two channels. He's at -8 at the moment by my count.

I take it the last channel for +4HP healing didn't go off? Otherwise Daylin's health should be -8 lethal. It matters since Daylin has 7 channels per day, and he's either used 3 or 4 of them, which might be important before we finish.

I think Ehm was at -15 lethal before I hit him with the wand last round for 7 healing, so I think he comes into this round down 8, and the 10 from the channel should fully heal him as well as the rest of the group.

'It can't be! We killed it! We cut off its head!" says Daylin in confusion and consternation. For a moment, it looks like the priest might lose heart and run. But then his jaw sets.

"We killed it once, we can do it again. Magnu, Akaasha, Vegazi, that bearded devil needs to go down fast. Focus fire on it. Ehm, do what you can to keep that masked woman busy. I'll try and hold off the Hellhound and keep people standing."

He casts 'Align Weapon' on Vegazi's bow, then readies himself for combat.

Angry though Daylin is, something in the mayor's tale gives him pause. Nevertheless he moves to Terrin's side to physically protect Vegazi.

"Mayor Proum, my companions and I came to this town to lend our aid, and more than once have acted on your behalf in good faith to protect your town. Trust me now then when I say that this remains our goal!"

"You say that strange and disturbing things have happened in the day that we were gone. Very well, let us speak more of these things. Perhaps we can learn what is at the bottom of it all, and forge a way forward."

Kind, respectful and even-tempered as Daylin usually is, at the moment he is weary from his journey, wracked with guilt for his failure to save all the scouts, and filled with foreboding about the trials to come. Seeing this scene with the mayor play out, and especially the spiteful reference to Vegazi, is simply too much to bear.

"Here we are!" he shouts out angrily. He storms forward toward the mayor. "We found the kidnapped scouts! And we disposed of the orcs and the devils who were tormenting your men! And we have a good lead toward the location of the Hell's Fury camp as well!" He points back toward the surviving scout, and his tone becomes more circumspect. "Alas, this is the only man we were able to save. The scouts had been beaten and starved nearly to death, and as we were releasing them, we were forced to fight a powerful devil who began executing them out of malice and spite. But we destroyed creature and took his head, and have brought back the bodies of the fallen."

He comes closer still to the mayor, looking eye to eye with him, in unblinking fury.

"Fault us for leaving the town without your permission if you wish. Fault us as well for failing to save all the men. For that all our hearts burn with regret. But by the Light, you will watch your speech regarding Vegazi. Outsider and half-orc though she may be, she is innocent of any wrongdoing toward you or your town, and has risked her life many times over today to track these villains and save that man. We would not have had what little success we managed had it not been for her."

"She deserves your thanks, not your slander."
