![]() I'm looking for players for a Rise of the Runelords PbP campaign. Any races and classes from the 3.5 core rulebook are allowed, as well as anything from the PH II. Any feats from the RotRL Player's Guide are available too. That's also a good source for campaign background. I'm looking for 3, maybe 4 players who can post frequently. Post a character concept with a SHORT background here. Be sure to include a reason for your character to be in the town of Sandpoint during the Swallowtail Festival. Good and Neutral characters work best. ![]()
![]() The votes are in. Over the past week, the votes for hottest Iconics have been collected in this thread. The results are here! Our categories were: Hottest male Iconic: Valeros, the hunky human fighter. With Sajan the Monk our runner up. Hottest female Iconic: Surprisingly enough, Amiri was voted the hottest of the female Iconics, with Seoni the sorcere coming in second. Most talented Iconic: Our voters chose Lem the Bard the most talented Iconic character, with Merisiel the runner up. Most likely to be eaten by a monster: Lem will have trouble accepting his award for most talented Iconic, as he is also the winner of the Most likely to be eaten by a monster award. Regards to the tentacles dragging him away. Lem is joined in the Aboleth's stomach by Valeros, the runner up for most likely monster fodder. Finally, of the new Iconics introduced in the Paizo blog, the Human Witch was voted the hottest. The runner up was the Inquisitor. Yay for half-orc love! ![]()
![]() Who's hooking up with whom among the Iconics? Who should be? Which ones wouldn't be caught dead next to certain fellow adventurers? In the vein of my other Iconic thread, share your opinions and favorite Iconic ships. I personally think that in the middle of some harrowing adventure, Kyra and Valeros are going to quit playing games and admit how they feel. ![]()
![]() Vote for the hottest Iconic! Let's see who's the most popular of our dear Paizo characters. The candidates are... The lovely ladies: Amiri
But don't forget the hunky fellows: Lem
Our categories for voting are: Most attractive male
Special Category:
Human Cavalier
Let's have a week of voting and find out. Let the voting begin! One vote per poster for each category. Contest is subject to local Magnimarian laws. No charm person spells. Iconics using bodily harm to encourage voting one way or the other will be disqualified (I'm looking at you and your daggers Merisiel) ![]()
![]() Hey all, I just ordered the Shackled City AP book and expect to be running the campaign withing two or three weeks with the 3.5 rules. As of right now, I have three players. One is considering a human fighter and one is thinking about an elven rogue. The third is undecided, but wavering between human paladin, human cleric, and dwarf ranger. All three are open to new character concepts to make the party balanced. What are your thoughts? Can the party make it with only three players? Should I run an opening adventure to give them a little extra xp? Will the absence of either a divine or arcane spellcaster mean disaster? Thanks. This AP looks great. ![]()
![]() I'm considering playing a Ranger for the first time in an upcoming game and I had a question I was hoping someone could help me with. I'm planning on making a crossbow the primary weapon of my Ranger. When I get the Rapid Shot feat at 2nd level, do I need the Rapid Reload feat to utilize it with a crossbow? Or does the Rapid Shot feat apply to any ranged weapon normally? Thanks. ![]()

![]() Hey all. I'm looking to get a PbP game up and running on these boards and I'm looking for up to four players. We'll be playing using 3.5 rules. Standard Races and Classes.
I know it's kind of impossible on these boards, but limited knowledge of Rise of the Runelords is preferable. Anyone interested? ![]()

![]() Hey all. Not sure if this is the proper format for a request like this, but I'm a long time DnD player looking to find a game here. Is anyone running a 3.5 PbP game looking for a player? I have all the core rulebooks and a few supplements, and I'm willing to fill any role required in the party (meat shield, healer, scout, etc.} ![]()
![]() Ran into a bit of a quandary when it comes to my RotRL campaign. After the death of the dwarven cleric at Thistletop, one of my players has elected to run Shalelu and make her a full-fledged PC. I have no problem with this, and in fact am quite excited about it. My problem is when the PCs reach the Hook Mountain Massacre. Spoiler:
The adventure states that Shalelu asks to join the PCs because she heard rumors about Jakardros being at Fort Rannick. It doesn't elaborate on where she heard about him or from whom. This is a great roleplaying opportunity for the Player and I don't just want to throw it away with a "you heard through the grapevine" Any thoughts? ![]()
![]() Running through my RotRL campaign last night, my players finally reached Thistletop, only to end up captured by the goblins. Spoiler:
They found their way into the thistle maze, no problem. The party bard scouts ahead and sees the birdcrunchers. Quietly, the party moves into position, and the wizard readies a scroll of flaming sphere he found in the Catacombs of wrath. He rolls a 1 on his level check to operate it (the party is level 2) and alerts the goblins, who attack en masse. A few rounds later, Gogmurt the druid arrives with his Fire Pelt and goblin dogs in tow.
The PCs put up a good fight, but end up unconscious and nearly dead. I've had the druid stabilize them, but I'm not sure what he'd do with his new captives. Any thoughts or ideas? ![]()
![]() As an idea for the RotRL campaign I'm running, I'm thinking of involving some Hellknights and I'm looking for advice. Spoiler:
As things stand now, the PCs just emerged from the Glassworks, having saved Ameiko. When they were breaking in, a few locals started asking questions. The bard failed her diplomacy check so the Fighter managed to shoo them off with an Intimidate check. The same fighter that managed to infuriate Ven Vinder when he was caught in an awkward situation with Shayliss.
Now as they emerge from the building with a battered and bloody Ameiko, they are greeted by a few guards with a crowd at their backs. The bard managed the Diplomacy check this time around, and the PCs were led to Mayor Deverin and Father Zantus. That's where the session ended. The PCs plan is to show the mayor Tsuto's journal. My plan is to have Titus Scarnetti barge in after their meeting and demand the PCs be arrested until everything is cleared up. The Sheriff has already left for Magnimar, and the PCs were recently approached by Scarnetti, who was attempting to hire them as enforcers in Hemlock's absence. He hinted at that time that he had resources coming from Magnimar. I'm thinking now that those resources are Hellknights. I was planning on having a few knights arrive in town at Scarnetti's request and kind of make things a bit difficult for the PCs in their zeal to get to the bottom of the recent troubles. Maybe have Mayor Deverin approach the PCs quietly to investigate on their own. Thoughts? Opinions? ![]()
![]() I'm starting this thread as a general brainstorming session for weird and/or unusual villains. I was looking through the DMG and started thinking about a Hafling Blackguard as the main villain of an adventure. It'd throw the players for a loop, especially if he was lording over a force of ogres and trolls or other large monsters. Picture it: The PCs burst into the throne room of the evil warlord. The figure is clad in black chainmail and sits astride a monstrous fiendish beast. His eyes glow red as he calls on the power of evil to smite the heroes. He also happens to be three feet tall. Anyone else have and idea for a villain with a twist? ![]()
![]() With the release of the Cavalier, Oracle, Witch, and Summoner came some more fantastic sketches from Wayne Reynolds. Is anyone else as excited as me to find out more about these characters? Will these sketches be fully realized into new Iconics in the future? And if so, will they get mini backstories like the Pathfinder Iconics? I'm a huge fan of the Pathfinder Iconics, and I can't wait to see them join the likes of Valeros, Seoni, and the rest of the gang. Which of the sketches is your favorite? Which do you want to find out more about? I'm personally interested in learning about the Witch. ![]()
![]() Hey all, I'm making this thread to compile great roleplaying anecdotes from the Rise of the Runelords adventure path and ideas people have for rp moments not outlined in the adventures themselves. I'll start off. I took an encounter from an old Dungeon adventure when I ran it. After the goblin attack at the Swallowtail Festival, amidst such encounters as the Boar Hunt and the Misadventures of Miss Vinder, a young dwarven girl named Jolie snuck into the sorcerer's room at the Rusty Dragon. Jolie wanted to grow up to become a great adventurer, but her parents were hearing none of it. The gnome sorcerer found her going through her potions and scrolls when she returned from a night at the Hagfish. It was quite a sight when the gnome dragged the girl back to her parents tugging on her ear with a mage hand spell. ![]()
![]() In the PH description of Bucklers, the rules state that you can use the arm the buckler is strapped to for other things. You can hold an object and even attack with an off-hand weapon. When you're wearing a Buckler and attack with an off-hand weapon, the rules state you lose the Buckler's AC bonus for the rest of the round and the off-hand attack suffers a -1 penalty because of the extra weight on you arm. What about two-handed weapons? Can you use say, a greatsword, while wearing a Buckler and still keep the AC bonus? ![]()
![]() Hey all. I'm gearing up to start playing in a friend's new campaign and I'm looking for help trying to flesh out a character concept. I've decided to play a human fighter, a melee specialist, and I'm trying to decide what weapons to specialize in. We're using a 28 point buy system, and my abilities are. Str 17 Dex 10 Con 14 Int 11 Wis 8 Cha 12 I'm shying away from using a shield. I'm thinking of going with one large weapon or two-weapon fighting right now. I'd like the character to have a unique flavor, so I've been thinking of unusual combinations, like battleaxe and dagger, sword and handaxe, etc. Though options like the heavy pick and halberd crossed my mind. Personality wise, the character is a tough, self-taught warrior. Any suggestions? ![]()
![]() We just finished running through the first part of the Bullywug Gambit. My PCs are currently hacking their way through frogmen at Vanderboren Manor, but developments have me looking much farther ahead. Serpents of Scuttlecove says that if Captain Harliss Javell was made friendly or helpful in the Bullywug Gambit, she would contact the PCs with a dream spell and lead them to Red Foam Whaling. The adventure assumes that she left the PCs with a favorable attitude. My problem is, do to a horrendous roll on the Diplomacy check, the party only managed to make the good Cap'n indifferent, despite a total +15 to the check. How should I weave Harliss back into the story when Serpents of Scuttlecove comes about? She certainly made an impression on the PCs, so they'll remember her. Should she be a bit combative if the PCs find her. How will they know to go to Red Foam Whaling? etc. ![]()
![]() Hello all. After much time spent agonizing over character creation and a game that would suit the tastes of everyone at the table, I finally got my campaign off the ground. We had our first session tonight, and I'll be posting the adventures of my players as I have time to put them into a nice narrative. For now here are the characters: Cole Martell (NG male human Bard) worships Fharlanghn
Age: 24
Malgrim "Mal" Shalefist (LN male dwarf Swashbuckler) worships Moradin
Age: 60
Darley Seaworth (CN female human Rogue) worships Xerbo
Age: 22
Callindra Nailo (NG female elf Abjurer) worships Corellon Larethian
Age: 138
From here on out, there be spoilers. Yar. Ye've been warned. ![]()
![]() Taking a look at the Savage Tide Iconics while browsing through Dungeon today, and I noticed that the Dwarf Barbarian iconic seems to wield a greataxe, yet carries a large shield as well. Just randomly thinking. Does he have a special feat like Monkey Grip (CA)? Or does he carry the shield and uses it separately with a lighter weapon like the short sword at his side. Thoughts? ![]()
![]() Hey all. About to start our new RotRL campaign in a few days, and while planning ahead I ran into a conundrum. My party consists of: -female human Rogue
The fighter has a CHA of 11, and the dwarf sorcerer has a CHA of 15. My question is which one would Shayliss go after? The text says she goes for any male PC who thinks he's quite the ladies man, which is more the dwarf's personality. So would she try to jump the reasonably handsome human fighter? Or cross the race line and go after the handsome dwarf? ![]()
![]() Hey all, my group and I are in the character building/conceptualizing stage of a RotRL campaign I plan to run. As things stand right now, no one wants to play a cleric or a druid, and I'm worried about the party surviving. However, one of the players has put forth the concept of playing a Desna-worshipping bard as the primary healer of the party. She plans to invest in scrolls of CLW early on, and a wand when she can afford it. There's little chance of her multiclassing into a cleric because her wisdom is an 8. Any thoughts on the feasibility of this? She'll pretty much be the main healer. ![]()
![]() ...birth of a new one. As the semester here at college ends, my RotRL campaign is falling apart. I'm in love with the adventure path however, and I'd really like to run it with my group from home. So does anyone who has run/is running RotRL have any advice for kicking off the first adventure. I've run through it once already, so I feel like I have a handle on it, but the roleplaying aspects felt a bit stale. My prospective players will probably be: A female human bard (a bit of a gossip and history buff)

![]() My group is in the middle of the Skinsaw Murders, just about to head off to Foxglove's mansion for some haunted fun. I figured if they survive, I'd like to throw in an encounter with the widowed Amele Barret from Burnt Offerings, once they reach Magnimar. In Burnt Offerings, I threw in the encounter about her sister coming to get her, and scolding the PCs for not getting there earlier. Now I'm torn whether to go tragic or hopeful with her story. The two encounters I have in mind are? Hopeful: The PCs encounter Amele doing quite well for herself and her children. She's working as a merchant's clerk in the Bazaar of Sails or some other similar job. Tragic: Amele never recovered from the death of her husband. She lives under the Shadow of the Irespan, and barely acknowledges her children. Perhaps she's working as a streetwalker or is a beggar near the Shadow Clock. In either case, she could be a source of info about the city for the PCs. Thoughts? Ideas? ![]()
![]() Note: We're using a mesh of 3.0 and 3.5 rules. PC Profiles: Lenna Sunrider (NG female human Cleric 1 of Sarenrae)
A buxom Shoanti woman of the Tamiir-Quah tribe. She was kidnapped by hobgoblin slavers when she was fifteen and carried far from her home before being rescued by a cleric of Sarenrae. Intriqued by the "civilized lands", she stayed with him at the Windsong Abbey, eventually becoming an acolyte of Sarenrae. Valeros Rey (NG male human Fighter 1)
Born a farmer's son in Andoran, he left to become an adventurer and has since become a skilled warrior. He's a fan of the two-weapon fighting style, and hides a strong moral streak beneath a devil-may-care soldier's attitude. Cirilli (CN female gnome Sorcerer 1)
Styles herself as a battle mage, with the attitude to match. Dull-witted for a gnome, she left her home in the north when her sorcerous talents emerged and she realized she no longer needed to rely on her more clever friends and family. Malgrim "Mal" Copperthumb (N male dwarf Rogue 1)
A dwarf from an enclave in Riddleport with little love for mining or smithing, he instead puts his talents with locks and traps to work as a talented tomb-breaker and adventurer, much to the chagrin of his more traditional family. ![]()
![]() My gaming group recently started playing through Rise of the Runelords. Tonight was our first session, and led to one of the little roleplaying accidents that create great gaming stories. Flush with their success against the goblins raiding the Swallowtail Festival, the PCs returned from the boar hunt with Aldern Foxglove, whereupon he took them to the Hagfish to show them a good time (and to continue putting the moves on their cleric of Sarenrae) Of course the PCs were met with dozens of challenges to drink from Norah the Hagfish's tank. I'd set the task as a simple DC 13 Fortitude save. Just maybe easy enough for a first level PC, but rare enough for an NPC to make. The first character to try was the Fighter, Valeros. Stepping up and taking a swig of the slimy water, the warrior rolled a 12, and spit the stuff out after only a few seconds. Laughing, Malgrim, the dwarven rogue, told the human to stand aside and leave such things to dwarves. Taking a drink, the dwarf rolled a 10, immediately spewing the foul water all over the bar, much to Valeros' amusement. Everyone in the tavern was shocked when the petite gnome sorceress, Cirilli, declared her intention to drink Norah's water next. When handed the mug, she took a whiff, made a face, and chugged. The 'lil devil rolled a 17! Standing on Valeros' shoulders, the tiny gnome sorceress became the 29th person to carve their name into the ceiling beam above the bar. And also won a good chunk of change in silver pieces. And everyone said she was crazy when she put a 16 in Constitution... ![]()
![]() So I was wondering if anyone had played any of the Pathfinder Iconics for a substantial part of an ongoing campaign. If so, how'd it go? Did any of their adventures in your campaign change them unexpectedly from their roots? My group is in the process of creating characters for RotRL. One player is planning on playing Ezren, and another is considering Lem. ![]()
![]() My gaming is group is getting ready to play RotRL and I was wondering...where in Golarion did the Kaijitsu family orginate. There's a reference to some place called "Minkai", but I can't find it on the map of Golarion. I know Lonjiku was born in Magnimar, but I was just curious as to where his culture originated, since one of my players is interested in playing a samurai or monk from the same area. Thanks. |
