Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Sorry about the disappearance. I have my campaign page bookmarked, but I didn't notice that I had gotten signed out of my account until this campaign was marked as inactive. I'm still interested in the game if it starts up again, though.

"I'll follow your lead, but I at least would hope that they're coming in peace."

I'm going to be inactive for a week or two.

"There's some edible food here, come have a look! I'm going to bring along some of these lilies. You never know when glue might come in handy." He folds a few into his backpack, careful not to cut into the resin, and cuts off some strawberries to eat.

When he has his fill, he despoils the unlucky creature of its equipment.

Are we tracking rations in this game? Because if we are, Daivid is going to fill himself on strawberries and pumpkins for the rest of the journey, since he didn't explicitly bring anything else...

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Yes.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"Just some odd plants," Daivid answers. He picks one up and examines it to see if he can figure out its properties.

Daivid tests the bridge with his foot, and if it supports him, moves on carefully.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"I'd guess that's the chaos storm. Let's run!" Daivid suggests, already acting on his own advice.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"No reason not to. We didn't know where we were going anyway," Daivid notes. "But a pity for the gold."

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"We don't know if he's alive or dead, and everyone else on the mission perished. Take that as you will. Do you have any particular interest in the topic?"

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"He was here to lead a mission against Shaggath-Ka. One of his lovers was sacrificed in the Worm Sultan's rites."

I had reread the post in the beginning, but I figured it was better to be vague in case the people are Shaggathians until he was asked explicitly

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"My friend simply wanted to keep your informed. We are searching for the Prince who came by here on a mission. The rest of his party perished, and we would like to know if he is alive or dead. And what are you doing here?"

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"Let's go ask. Maybe one of them saw the prince," Daivid nods in assent.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

I'm interested in continuing if you're still up to it. There's no reason to be too afraid to post, because there's no pressure to go beyond what you can do.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid readies his coins and hands six more to Stauntram when he notices that the dwarf is short the gold.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid looks up at the guards and tries to recall what, if anything, they were expected to do before passing the towers.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"...a statue of Shaggath-Ka, the Worm Sultan. We should put an offering into this bucket, if we mean to show our support; or perhaps ignore it, if not. In any case, Prince Eyrean may have passed nearby, as his purpose down here was vengeance against the depicted demon."

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid gets closer to take a look at the statue and gives a knowing nod. "This is obviously..."

I have advantage on "lore relating to history, culture (including myths and legends) and etiquette."

"Not me," Daivid replies, in the mushrooms' native tongue.

Technically I should roll for that but it seems inconsequential enough that failure doesn't matter.

I actually still haven't converted my S&W inventory (since the prices aren't fixed). Do I roll for their prices or are they just still with me (I don't remember anyone having rolled)?

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Here. It was for S&W so I didn't assume it carried over to LFG. Was it supposed to?

Daivid's vision is not as good as Stauntram's, but he knows even without reading it that putting a signature to a contract spells trouble. He tries to intervene before any problem comes of it. "These requirements might pose difficulties for Stauntram later on. Surely you could waive the formality, as a gesture of good will, in view of how helpful he is trying to be for you!"

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"Dunno about you guys, but I'm from above," Daivid says. "I think we should just respond; I'm all for advancing science." Daivid himself has nothing to hide, except for his other dozen aliases.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"Are you talking to the shrooms?" Daivid asks from a few paces behind Yamagata.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"Never seen it before," Daivid confesses.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

At the mushroom people's urging, Daivid approaches with Stauntram. He looks down at the mushroom that they want Stauntram to breathe to determine how safe it is.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid, already at the back of the group, quickly paces further backwards. He would sooner hide than shoot and risk being overpowered, but his bow is readied in case of aggression from either side.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid passes the dissolved corpses and follows with newfound vigilance.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid shrugs and throws in another silver piece, though without copying Yamagata's gestures.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Me too.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid is conflicted, so no vote. It seems Yamagata has the deciding vote.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid snorts. "I've worked with humans worse than any such things, and I'm still waiting for them to be damned. But you're the holy guy, so I won't risk it without your say-so."

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"But are they friendly?" Daivid wonders. "If we could communicate with those spirits, we might even be able to get help finding the Prince - if they are aware of what goes on in the corporeal world."

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid shrugs.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"It's a fungus," Daivid nods knowingly. "Possibly a murderous one, too. I'd stay as far away as possible while passing it."

Are we rolling HP or taking maximum at first level?

Go ahead and take max. That will simulate what the Baron was willing to lend you at the beginning.

HP or GP?

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"Forward," Daivid agrees, and then goes backwards to take his place again at the back of the party.

I think I'll translate as bard, since the thief isn't made well for ranged attacks.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

I personally don't feel that all of the problems that you mention are so bad (between the extra HP you gave us and the option to roll up new characters if necessary), but I don't mind changing to another system.

I know 13th Age well, so I could convert myself to it easily. I agree with Helaman that it isn't close to OSR-style, but it does fit your other criteria.

I don't know Low Fantasy Gaming, but it's free, so I would be willing to try it out. But its description makes me doubt that it will help with regard to your feeling that S&W is too deadly.

I don't have 5 Torches or Torchbearer.

You might also want to look at Microlite20 in one of its myriad incarnations (very rules-lite with OSR feel but not intentionally deadly).

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid slinks into the shadows, and once hidden in a niche near the hole that the pillbugs came out of, he readies his bow to fire.

From what I understand from the core rules (I assume we are ignoring the alternate combat sequences), I can move this round to get behind the enemy, and make ranged attacks next round (and every subsequent round?) for double damage. But my weapon gives me two shots, and it's "up to the Referee" whether the second shot is resolved during the move phase or the melee combat phase, so conceivably I could make one Backstab ranged attack this turn. How would you rule?

If an attack is allowed:

Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6x2=12

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

Daivid moves far to the side and strings his bow. "See, I told you there was danger here!" he notes fiercely, annoyed that Stauntram once again seemed to have displayed more knowledge than he did.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"More bugs! We didn't approach them when there was a chance of gold, so definitely no reason to disturb them now, alive or dead. I wonder who took the trouble to make the pile, though."

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

I could use some of the arrows (I could take all of them for now if there's no other archer), and one Ancient charm vs. Chaos and Stone Cloak.

Bard 2 | HP 15/15 | AC 16 | Sword +0 d8+1-1, 19=disarm | Bow +3 d8+2

"Yes, ahem, it might be wise to ignore" – Daivid winces – "the gold, until the creatures leave. And perhaps we should bring an offering of dead meat with us to throw to them if they remain."
