Ok group 2 members, a discussion thread is open here for you to go over and start chatting: Say Hi!

2 people marked this as a favorite.
Aria Park

Feel free to introduce yourselves a bit more.

Something for you all to consider before we start the campaign proper:

- Is your character a native of Kintargo? If not, how did they come to be here?
- Does your character know any of the other player characters? If so, how?
- How would you describe your character?
- How would your character describe themselves? (Remember these two things can be very different).

Alyksandrei wrote:

I believe I get Group 1, as it only has 5 players...

Um, NOTY, how do I get started with a campaign? Do I need to start with a Recruitment thread and link the Gameplay and Discussion threads to it, or can I skip the Recruitment thread (since this was sort of mine as well as yours) and go straight to Gameplay and Discussion?

I'd just make a recruitment thread, and call it a closed recruitment, then make the campaign from there. That way you know for sure that all the threads are correctly linked :)

Ok, sorted for balanced parties, I'm proposing:

Group 1:

Viviana the Reborn - Human oracle
Gilen Reidford - Human Barbarian
Malph Rumlinger - Gnome Rogue
Alassa Vaenar - Sylph Sorceror
Matsudaira - Human Monk

Group 2:
Oskar Gorunn - Dwarf Cleric
Rhen Selador – Human Fighter
Alina Dereni - Human Magus
Renvil Ratarion - Human Bard
Donal Death-Greeter - Half-orc Inquisitor
Henry Ravenheart - Investigator

Happy to do that. Six and six because of Rhen, I'll pitch two groups later today.

Henry Ravenheart wrote:

I applied prior to the due date.

This was sent by personal mail as well as by my alias.

Yep, received that. Apologies for missing you off the list.

Alyksandrei wrote:
Either is fine with me. But I think I'd like to stick to this group of applicants to start? I've never done this before...

Well, given that there is - by my count - 11 applicant, how's about we split it into a group of five and a group of six. That way every applicant gets a chance to play :)

Aleksis wrote:
You missed me. Unless you were planning on having me (Alyksandrei) run a second group?

Yeah, I'd thought you'd indicated that you were going to try your hand at DM-ing?

If that's not the case, I'm happy to add you back onto the list :)

Aria Park

Initiative Order
Aram - 28
Kessa - 22

Guards - 20
Ariella - 16
Crady - 16
Thugs - 14
Zakli - 12
Killian - 10

Bold can act (Aram I'll treat your action as above).

DM:

Will(1): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Will(2): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18

The thug in the crowd, having brandished his weapon promptly drops it to the ground in a stupor. His companion, just outside of the crowd stares at him for a moment, before yelling "Eustic, what in the seventeenth circle of hell has come over you?"

Ok, recruitment is over (as of 2 days ago).

The current list I have of submitted characters are:

Viviana the Reborn - Human oracle
Gilen Reidford - Human Barbarian
Renvil Ratarion - Human Bard
Matsudaira - Human Monk
Alistair Underhill - Halfling Rogue
Alina Dereni - Human Magus
Alassa Vaenar - Sylph Sorceror
Oskar Gorunn - Dwarf Cleric
Donal Death-Greeter - Half-orc Inquisitor
Malph Rumlinger - Gnome Rogue

Please let me know if I've missed anyone, or if there was anyone that had shown there interest but had a nearly complete character and I missed a question or something similar.

As a sidenote, apologies for poor communication over the last fortnight, work had been busy but I'm now in the right place to get this game kickin'.

Aria Park

Yep, can do.

Aria Park

Map has been update to show the state of the crowd. Hats are citizens, things with maces are thugs and dottari respectively.

Init(thugs): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14
Init(guards): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Aria Park

As the full weight of Thrune's words sink in, the crowd immediately starts booing and jeering. From somewhere in the middle of the crowd, a handful of manure arches up towards the lord-mayor. The putrid projectile misses Barzillai by barely an inch, however the lord-mayor nonetheless flinches and in doing so spills some wine from his goblet across the collar of this clothes.

Instantly, the lord-mayor’s demeanor shifts from amused to bellicose.

“Enough of this! Nox, run them out, arrest them, or kill them. I don’t care which!”

And with that, Thrune sweeps through the doorway behind him, slamming it shut as he goes.

Down below, the woman by the opera house door yells an instruction to the guards near her, who draw their weapons. At the same time, the men and women throughout the crowd that Kessa and Aram had spotted pull back their cloaks, revealing matching armbands, truncheons, and with sadistic glee start attacking the crowd around them. Pandemonium breaks loose as many protestors take up the fight, whilst many more attempt to flee out of aria park by any means necessary.

People looking for a contact:
As the manure started to take flight, you thought you spotted a gloved hand being shaken in the air, somewhere towards the front of the crowd. However, as the riot starts the sudden rush of the crowd causes you to lose sight of it far too quickly

Gimme those initiatives again! Kessa + Aram, you both have +4 to initiative due to spotting the pattern of the crowd

Aria Park

As the crowd reacts to Aram's words and reaches a fever pitch, again the bells ring. This time three loud drones blot out all other sound, signifying that it is three minutes past the third hour (as is the norm for these bells).

A few moments later - as the hum of the bells are still fading from the air - the wide windows on the third floor of the opera house are flung open. Standing in the window is an imposing, middle aged man. He is dressed in red, orange, and black clothing and an ornate breastplate emblazoned with the pentagram of Asmodeus and the cross of Cheliax. Cradling a wicked looking mace in one hand, and a rich gilded goblet in the other, the man peers down on the hushed assembly and starts to speak:

"Ah, my adoring little chickadees. I am sorry to say I have not yet adapted to your quaint, country ways, being accustomed as I am to the sophistication and learning of Egorian. Nonetheless, know I have heard your concerns, and that I appreciate your valued feedback, and I know we shall eventually find a mutual understanding in the fullness of time. I take pride in updating Kintargo's quaint, outdated laws to the standards the city deserves, and strengthening its ties with the empire in these cruel times, but obviously I have approached my duties too aggressively.”

“You say you chafe at the presence of non-natives in positions of power? That authorities not of this city have no places as its leaders? That you will not be yoked by intruders? Your lord-mayor hears you. And so it is with a heavy heart that I issue this proclamation, in response to your demands: all ships’ captains are hereafter barred from leaving their vessels and setting foot on Kintargo docks or streets, under pain of… let’s say… squassation!”

Know. Local (DC15):
Squassation is a form of torture in which the victim’s hands are tied together and raised above the head ; the victim is then hung from the hands while a weight is suspended from the feet, causing intense pain to the arms and legs.
This is Barzillai’s 8th proclamation since taking up the mayorship, but the first to include any form of torture.

Stupid question. How do I share a character?

Normally you got to your account, create a new alias, and fill in all the character details on that alias :)

Aria Park

Happy to step out of initiative and play this out

The crowd is starting to get noticeably restless. Adam's voice struggles to reach through the hubbub of competing voices, between the chants the lectures and the general jeering from the the hoard of protestors.

Nevertheless, a number of people near Aram appear to take heed of his warning, and start to yell angrily along about dissenters and government plants in the crowd. In particular, a group that was standing behind the fountain appear to take great offence. They start picking up rocks and tearing branches off trees and start stepping towards the crowd.

As Ariela bumps into the man - successfully pulling a light mace out of a concealed holder near his waist - he turns to look at her. A lean, pale man, he looks down at her with a flicker of scorn. It is quickly replaced by a warm smile. In awkward voice, he says "That's ok, um, miss. We're both here protesting that blasted house Thrune together, just watch yourself."

DM:

Perc1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Perc2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Sorry team, I'd had a busy week at work this week and was waiting for the bundle to close so that any last straggling recruits would be able to sign up.

Let's say that applications (in the form of rough character concepts) are due by this Sunday, 11:59 PM AEST. I'll then assess how many players we have and what to do about running it. I know of one other GM who might take up a game as well, so that we can have twice the number of players.

Aria Park

Aram:
Woops, sorry I missed that in the first instance.

You can tell that the infiltrators are clearly moving as part of a deliberate plan. Once in a group they appear to be waiting for some kind of signal.

Aria Park

Kessa:
You look throughout the crowd, but you can't spot anyone who looks anything like your mentor. However, you do notice something unusual about the movement of the crowd. Every few minutes, one or two people will splinter from the smallest of the groups that has formed. In a deliberate and organized way, these individuals will approach another group and blend into the crowd that is forming.

Additionally, as you scan the crowd, you notice some movement from above. Through a window on the third floor of the opera house, you notice a shadowy figure moving behind the thick curtains. They appear to be watching the crowd gathering below.

Aria Park

The Gnome doesn't seem to be anyone of particular importance. Ariela does notice however that the group he is surrounded by seems to be all dressed in similar shades of red, and quite a few of them - including the gnome - appear to be wearing bronze necklaces around their necks.

Perception(DC12):
The necklaces have the symbol of house Thrune carved into them, as well as three engraved letters: C C G

Aria Park

Apologies about the delays team, it was a busy weekend. GM'd two different games IRL ,'=/

Aria Park

At Crady's suggest, Vic settles down a little but continues to preach to the open air around him.

Suddenly, the bells of the Cathedral of Asmodeus chime once with a deafening clang. The whole crowd seems to pause as the note hangs in the air, but as the resonance fades away the chanting and jeering of the crowd resume.

However, in the last few minutes one of the groups seems to have swelled, and the pause seems to have given them the opportunity they needed. A short gnome steps forward and starts yelling towards the singing protestors.

"Under house Thrune, our great and noble nation has grown to be the empire that is today! How dare any of you want to challenge the infernally ordained, rightful rule of Mayor Thrune. There is no doubt in my mind that our town is in for an exciting new time of prosperity."

Kessa - you're up

Still accepting for the moment. I'll need to go through today and work out how many players we actually have so far.

Aria Park

Killian:
The younger brother makes one final point to his brother: “I hear the dottari guard towers are so full of prisoners now they’re keeping those they arrest in warehouses. Cousin strix even said they’re putting prisoners to work in places like Sallix Salt Works! How can the system be working if they're arresting the whole city for slave labour?!” Before his sibling can reply, he storms offs and joins the large group of protestors now bellowing in song

Aria Park

"Metronicus, they're all dying. The Devil's Nursery will all be silent soon, and it's because of this damn Barzillai! Not thrice damned, but quarce damned! All the little red-breasted birdies have stopped singing their tunes. Why won't they listen to me Metronicus, they're all dying!" The burly man has started twitching, apparently shaking himself into a frenzy now that he has an audience to his missives. He lets Crady lead him away from the crowd, but is no less passionate in his please. "One by one by one by one! They're coming for the grin, and the blood is just collateral."

Aria Park

Killian, what are you spending the round on?

Aria Park

Although the man talking over the gnome at first seems like a protestor stirring up support, Ariela quickly realises that he is a homeless person, possibly mentally afflicted, shouting random phrases at the towns people who have interrupted his space. "“That bodyguard of Thrune’s, that woman Nox, is half devil. She’s too ugly to be just human, that’s for sure! And the hell knight took me at night and experimented on me. The bells chime late, that says it all! It's all part of the silver mountain conspiracy, Aroden told me so!!!”

Crady:
From your position near the fountain, you recognise this man as Ol' Vic, a well known homeless man of the area. He's actually quite pleasant once calmed down.

Aria Park

Ariela, which of the two actions are you doing this round? :P

Aria Park

The group of protestors closest to the opera house doors all pick up on Zakli's tune, and begin to chant it passionately at the guards. A few gesture for the gnome to join them on the front lines. All dressed in respectable clothing, the group carry the song well:

"Barzillai Thrune, what a great buffoon:"
"Has to hold the opera 'cause he cannot hold a tune."
"Barzillai Thrune, and his Thrunish goons"
"Better leave the opera, 'cause we're coming in soon."

Zakli, you get +1 to Charisma checks for the next hour, and crowds no long count as difficult terrain for you.

Aria Park

Kessa:
As you scan the crowd, you see a flash of red on someone's shoulder and recognise it as a rose petal. As the moment passes however, the person brushes their shoulder and you realise it was actually a rose petal falling from the trees next to you, borne aloft by the gentle breeze. Feeling a bit foolish, your attention drifta from the crowd for a little while.

Aria Park

As you all settle in amongst the crowd, a trickle of people continues to wander into the park. A few noticeable bundles of people are already forming. The largest of the groups is positioned between the fountain and the opera house. They are crowded around a tall, thin elven man. He appears to be reading some form of economic treaty on the adverse effects of unjust taxation and business policies upon the merchant class, with the listeners occasionally throwing in their support. “…and the third proclamation compounds this issue! The necessity for additional taxes levied from the business community to maintain an artificial industry of the capture and care of canines is entirely contrary to free market thinking! It distorts business and will lead to a bubble, much like Galt Tulip situation that occurred in…”

The doors to the opera house are guarded by a number of Dottari – hellknights serving as local town guards. They are forming a loose arch around the entrance and whilst they are watchful of the protests, they do directly engage any of the citizens.

Everyone - Perception(DC12:

The guards seem noticeably edgy, until the door behind them briefly opens. A scowling woman steps out and takes place right behind the foremost pair of dottari. She seems almost cavalier in her distain for the crowds. Seeing her presence, the guards seem to relax a little.

Aram:
You look throughout the crowd, but you can't spot anyone who matches the description you have for your contact. However, you do notice something unusual about the movement of the crowd. Every few minutes, one or two people will splinter from the smallest of the groups that has formed. In a deliberate and organized way, these individuals will approach another group and blend into the crowd that is forming.

You also qualify for the above perception check automatically

Aria Park

Turn order is:

-Kessa
-Aram
-Killian
-Zakli
-Ariela
-Crady
- Protesters - modified it, GM caveat ;)

For the protest, each of you post what you intend to do with relevant dice rolls, and ill provide outcomes, with a big recap of the hour happening during the Protestors turn.

Aria Park

I was certain I'd be last in initiative. A great start to this campaign :P

Aria Park

First post is up :)

Aria Park

Even with the cobblestones of Argent Avenue and the foliage of Aria Park still wet from the morning’s light rain, dozens of Kintargans have gathered along the facade of the opera house to protest the city’s new lord-mayor, Paracount Barzillai Thrune. The city’s new leader was appointed by Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II, in the wake of the previous lord-mayor’s sudden flight from the city— an event that still has local rumormongers whispering furiously. In a scant seven days, Paracount Thrune has instituted martial law, a curfew, and seven outlandish and polarizing proclamations. These actions and more have called many of Kintargo’s dissatisfied citizens here on this overcast morn. There’s been no sign yet of Barzillai Thrune himself, and the opera house’s doors remain tightly closed—as they have since the man chose the landmark as his new home—but judging by the growing sound of the protesters, he surely can’t ignore the scene on the streets below much longer.

Although it is still early, each of you know that you are in for a long day. And yet, there is already so much to do!

ROLL FOR INITIATIVE!

Each of you will be able to undertake a number of actions (listed below). Each action/turn takes ~1hr, and we'll proceed through them in initiative order. The map available above shows the state of Aria park at any one time. You are free to place our characters anywhere to start with, and to move them freely during your turn. Red zones show where there is a particularly dense crowd that may hinder your movement.

Options:

Listen For Rumours: Diplomacy or Perception check to learn more about Kintargo’s Political Landscape.
Pilfer: Sleight of hand check to make the most of the crowds distractions.
Rabble Rouse: Diplomacy or Perform to better organize the protest.
Search for Contact: Perception check to try and spot amongst the crowd your contact.
Silence Undesirable Elements: Bluff or Intimidate check to try and silence or outshout members of the crowd you disagree with.
Watch the Crowd: Perception or Sense Motive check to observe the situation and the crowd.

Init(GM): 1d20 ⇒ 3

Howdy friends! I'll have a look through everyone's alias tonight and let you know if there are any problems :)

Aria Park

I'll have the opening post up this afternoon (Australian time). I've planned most of it, just need to post to upload.

Like I said earlier, happy for you to have some links. Pitch them, and I'll voice any particular concerns I have. For those with currently unnamed NPCs, expect a little blurb for you in the opening post.

Aria Park

I'll try and have our opening post up once everyone has dotted in. I'm happy for you to make any little changes to your characters as necessary now, be that shifts to backstory or stats.

The AP assumes that you don't know each other yet, but id be more than happy for you to workout if anyone has shared backstory or previous interactions.

So, after re-re-reading through everyone's applications and struggling to narrow it down, I've decided that the final players will be:

Ariela Fiorell
Kessa
Metronicus Crady
Zakli Warbleflinger
Killian Shaburn
Aram Greyfeather

Thank you so much to all the other applicants and please know that there was not a single character submitted that I didn't struggle to put aside. Best of luck in other applications, and to my six new players feel free to go say hi in the discussion thread.

Aria Park

Open to dot away.

I'm aiming to hit the first three at a minimum. We'll see after that :)

Posted this in the welcome thread, but I figure it's worth copying here as well:

Interesting. I'd love to try this, but I think I'd need a little help building a character...I usually build characters with, essentially, custom classes in order to get the concept I have in mind. PFS rules are so much more restrictive than the rules I usually use!

Hi Alyksandrei, welcome! I don't know how much you've read of the Pathfinder books yet, but you'll find that there are a multitude of Archetypes that allow you to narrow down a class so that it closer fits your specific idea for a character. Perhaps this well help you a bit?

Hello there! My name's Caleb and I just purchased the bundle--I've been involved in role-playing games for many years now, with the most experience I've had in D&D 3.5. I've been wanting to try Pathfinder for a while now, but because I have so many of the 3.5 manuals (and I usually GM campaigns instead of playing in them), the usefulness of having so many resources as opposed to having very little by switching over to Pathfinder was enough to keep me with 3.5.

Hi Caleb, welcome! In many ways you should find pathfinder pretty intuitive coming off 3.5, it's sort of the next step in that progression.

Xcarthan12 wrote:

So, all that to say, I'd love to play in this! I had a few questions, mainly what the "application process" as you described would be, and any other info you could give me on the campaign and how the play-by-post would work would be fantastic.

Good questions!

(1)Application Process: For Play-By-Posts on the Paizo forums, the GM will give a set of character creation requirements, and often ask for some kind of backstory. I'm running another recruitment for this campaign at the moment, and I'm requiring applicants to answer a few questions to get a feel for their roleplaying style. Players will then build a character sheet and a character backstory and submit it to the forum as an Alias. The GM chooses the number of players he wants from the pool of characters, and away we go. Some play by posts can be very popular (i'm looking at you Way Of The Wicked) and can wind up with 50+ applications for a 5 player game.

For this game, I'll be looking to have five players, and if I get enough interested people early, I may just close applications so that people don't get disappointed.

(2)Info on the campaign: Hell's Rebel is an adventure path, which is a campaign from level 1 to between level 13 and level 20. They're released in 6 parts, one chapter per month, and each campaign has a different feel. I've played or run a few of them and most are very well written.

Hell's Rebels his set in the city of Kintargo in the diabolical empire of Cheliax. Cheliax is ruled by Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune. The country is a decaying empire that has seen much better days, but the nobility of House Thrune hold tightly to their power and impose strict law across the country. However, recently rebellion has been stirring through out the nation, in part prompted by a group of religious crusaders known as the Glorious Reclamation. The Glorious Reclamation are followers of the Goddess Iomedae (google her). The recently recovered an artefact of significance to their deity by defeating an order of the Hellknights (the harsh law keepers of Cheliax), and in doing so have started staring up discord throughout Cheliax. In response, the nobility of thrune have put the nation into a state of martial law.

At the start of the adventure, the player's characters find themselves assembling - each for their own reasons - at a public protest against Thrune and their martial rule in the city of Kintargo.

(3) How Play-by-Post works: There's a well regarded forum post here which runs through a lot of the basics of play-by-post, but typically the games run like this: There is a gameplay thread and a discussion thread, which serve as the in character and out of character game. In the gameplay thread, the GM will present information to the players, and the each of the players have a chance to post their response. Different GM's run at different paces, but typically the posting rate is one post per day. That means the GM will post something, and will wait
