Really sorry RL has got in the way. I was having trouble up loading to the forum and I need to go away for the weekend

hang in there guys

thanks

sorry guys been super busy will post for tomorrow.

D'awww you guessed it!

@Nayli There is a pirate next to you so I will use that roll as a straight attack. Unfortunately it still misses

Thanks SaltyI forgot! Nayli and Joan If you can make an AoO do so. And the square (24,6) is empty.

I hope you are following the battle because I'm not sure I am!

On the deck of the Bea’s Gambit the Small oil skinned figure is sighted once again. Strolling amongst the burning crew members he raises the sharks jawbone and the same salt water spray washes over the downed pirates. They rise up gathering weapons and putting the fires out on themselves and their comrades.

Crew vs Pirate rolls were made Paraphrased here

The crew of the Lady Sue hold the rail valiantly striking climbing pirates some of which fall between the ships. Those not quick enough to climb aboard the outrigger once again are crushed to death between the heavy boats. The pirates strike back at the defenders and whist not able to gain a foothold on the deck several of the defenders are struck by heavy blows now sport open wounds. Due to the design of the ship 2 Pirates are able to squeeze aboard next to salty and in front of Brayan the blinded Dwarf swings a mighty blow at the pirate and the attacking human breathes a sigh of relief as the hand axe which surely would have buried itself into his skull only finds the rail. (FYI: Brayan Crit with near max damage but failed his miss chance due to being blind.)

At the bow of the ship Errol almost single headedly holds off a mass of attacking pirates. You are suspicious about his stated lack of combat experience.

The final boarding ropes are attached and the remainder of the pirates on the outrigger start to assault the Lady Sue.

Attacks vs the PCs (Round 2)
Elenia: 1 ranged 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 Hit 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Joan: 1 melee 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (13) - 2 = 11 Miss
Mirandir: 1 melee 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (20) - 2 = 18 Crit threat 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (6) - 2 = 4 Not confirmed 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Morvan: 2 ranged 1d20 ⇒ 15 Hit 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
1d20 ⇒ 5 Miss
Nayli: 1 melee 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (17) - 2 = 15 Hit 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Salty: 2 melee 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (11) - 2 = 9 Hit 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
1d20 - 2 ⇒ (8) - 2 = 6 Miss

Elenia regains her sight just in time to see an arrow fired from the deck of the pirate ship pierce her magical barrier and strike her in the body. Joan duels the pirate she wounded as he climbed the rope blocking his scimitar swing with the borrowed cutlass. Miradir drives his trident into the shoulder of the climbing attacker who shouts in pain and in return slashes her blade across the elf’s belly. Morvan’s singing draws the focus of a pair of archers from the pirate ship. Despite being behind the large half orc one arrow still finds its mark wounding the skald. Nayli brings her whip down against a climbing pirate but only hits the wooden hull of the ship. Her strike leaves her open to a counter attack and the warpriest receives a shallow cut for her efforts. Finally Salty screaming with blind rage sends 2 pirates plummeting from the side of the ship with grievous wounds. Their places immediately taken by 2 other pirates who both attempt to subdue the fearsome opponent. Unfortunately for them, only one blade finds its mark.
The remainder of the pirate archers make their way onto the outrigger and prepare to climb. The Orc leader makes his way towards the bow and Errol. The small oilskin clad figure is joined by a dwarf in a leather apron holding a wooden mallet a human in ornate leather armour and a human who can only be the captain; dressed in a long armoured coat and large hat. The 4 figures make no move to attack content to merely observe the unfolding battle.

New map

Along the deck the pirates begin to gain the upper hand dropping several of the crew, their places taken by pirates waiting on the ladders. Essentially pirates lower down on the ladder move onto the deck through the attacking pirates square. I have ruled that they can only do this on ladders not on the ropes. It also takes a double move to do it. A second wave of crew from the Lady Sue fill the gaps along the rail left by their fallen comrades. Despite being surrounded Brayan manages to deflect the attacks aimed his way but in return his own strikes find no purchase.

Everyone to act.

Ok no problem I will wait till tomorrow. Thanks all normal service will resume shortly.

OK a new week and a new month so I am bumping this post please act if you have yet to do so.

OK so I am still away from home and I will be until Friday. I can post but I don't have all my prep here. Please be aware that as I am working mostly from memory some of my rolls may be inaccurate. If it becomes an issues I will have to postpone posts till Friday but I do not want to do this.

Joan’s attack on the rope 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Joan moves to the rail displacing a crewmember and chopping down on the rope. Which she severs neatly with strong downwards chop.

From the main deck the remainder of the pirates attempt to provide their comrades some cover. Longbow armed elven crewmembers fire their deadly weapons at the deck.
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Salty’s vicious attack had thinned the ranks of archers ready to fire so he only found 2 arrows aimed at him.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
The screams of burning sailors seem to unnerve the ranged attackers as the arrows aimed at salty fly harmlessly above the large cooks head. At the same time as the archers fire several pirates swing from ropes across the void between the 2 ships. The crew ready attacks against the aerial foe, but to everyone’s surprise they swing well short. Equally surprising is the aim of their manoeuvre at the apex of their swing the attackers who are mostly gnomes hurl a number of pouches at the deck of the lady sue.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
With a blinding flash the pouches explode as the hit the deck causing many of the crew to stumble backwards holding their eyes. (Everyone except Nayli please make a Fort Save DC13 or be blinded next round.)

Mirandir please take an action otherwise you will be readying to attack someone climbing.

Elenia your action.
Errol averts his eyes before the flash and readies an attack on the first pirate to come over the rail. Brayan is not so lucky but raises his hand axe ready to strike none the less.

I have been called away from home for a couple of days this will mean no post till Sunday cheers

Nope there is still one rope attached at (14,06). The assaulting pirates are below you on the outrigger readying ropes and ladders they are about 15ft down and there is a 5ft gap between the 2 boats.

House keeping:
@Salty: I have your first turn thank you. Also to make that shot you will need to be standing at (22,6/23,6/22,7/23,7)

@Joan: With your rolls Knowledge (Geography): You would guess that you were still on the same course you and the captain plotted.
Perception: The crew of the ship seem to be of similar composition to that of your own a good mix of races etc. You the huge sails of the ship cast a great deal of shadow over the deck consequently you are unable to learn much more about its construction other than the stern sweeps up and tapers at the back. From this distance there are several people who could hold rank but what that rank is you cannot be sure. Looking up you see a single robed figure in the crow’s nest. Your eyes must be deceiving you could this be a fabled Drow?
Profession (Porter): Not relevant at this time.
Sense Motive: The overall feeling among the crew is one of fear and determination.
Survival: Not relevant at this time
Symbols on the shark jaw?: Yes plenty you would need ranks in Knowledge religion to understand them however. As for who the small figure is you are unsure but he clearly holds some rank.
Also I’m moving you to (12,6) the captain doesn’t want anyone other than the officers on the bridge.

@Mirandir: You also spot the robed figure and can identify it as a Dusk elf.

@Nayli: you may make a Knowledge religion check for the small figure with the shark jaw.

The chains connecting both ships tighten and drag the 2 vessels together a scattering of shots are fired from ship to ship however very few do any real harm to either crew. For the most part it seems that the crew of the Bea’s Gambit are preparing for a full scale assault. The outrigger is now empty of its previous occupants who line the decks facing you. A calm descends between the 2 boats which is only broken when a massive orc stripped to the waist steps forward and bellows ATTACK!!! with that the enemy crew surge towards the side of the Lady Sue Grappling ropes and Ladders in hand.

(Discription)

Climbing on top of the workshop Morvan stands up to his full height and begins to sing:
Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley,

Wey hey, Bully in the alley.

Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley,

Bully down in Shinbone al.

The crew know the song well and join in with gusto, stamping their feet and slamming the hits of their weapons on the guard rail. This visibly gives the pirates pause, not used to enemies who meet them face to face let alone sing. Errol stands at the rail towards the bow of the ship, a dull short sword in hand ready to cut any boarding lines that may be used for climbing. Brayan stands next to salty holding a hand axe and prepares to do the same. The Pirates carrying the boarding equipment react quickly surging down the ships ramps and onto the outrigger preparing the boarding equipment. 4 sailors are in a position to throw grappling ropes:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13 vs DC11
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 vs DC11
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 vs DC11
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20 vs DC11
2 of the ropes attach firmly to the rails (at 14,6 and 28,6) Errol is ready however and chops at the rope:
Sunder Vs rope 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
Errol casually slices through the rope attached to the grappling hook tossing the now useless piece of curved iron over the side and into the sea.

Elenia, Joan, Morven & Mirandir you are up!

Salty hefts the iron bolt before expertly throwing it like a javelin into a large mass of waiting pirates including the muscle bound orc.
1d8 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 targets in the area.

13 Ref saves DC15:
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

The bolt flies true striking the deck of the ship the glass of the orb shattering hurling the viscous green oil in a wide splash. As it reacts with the air the liquid explodes into flame covering the poor knot of sailors in sticky fire. Due to the design of the ship and Salty’s forethought the now flaming liquid drips between the holes of the top deck and onto the unsuspecting crew below. Horrifying screams of pain erupt from the inferno as only 4 of the sailors hit remain standing the others crumple in a still burning heap. The Orc is fast enough to avoid the explosion leaping onto a low hanging sail rope and only sustaining light burns.

On your 1st turn you may make a thrown attack with the bolt. If you hit deal 4d6 damage to all squares 5 feet around the target space, DC15 reflex for half if they fail they are set on fire. Standard thrown attack rules apply. The most favorable square is 20ft away and will allow you to hit 8 targets you could hit more people but the shot would be 50ft away.

I dunno a bout a barrel of something flammable, but there was an alchemist fire ballista bolt. Although I will have to work out what the damage for it used in this manner is.

Pirates VS Players:

So I am assuming that you utilise the cover when you fire.
Elenia:
1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (19) - 4 = 15 (Hit)
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 (Damage)

Joan:
1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Mirandir:
1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (5) - 4 = 1 (Miss)
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (20) - 4 = 16 (Crit threat)
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (3) - 4 = -1 (Not confirmed)
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 (Damage)

Morvan:
1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (13) - 4 = 9 (Miss)

Nayli:
1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (7) - 4 = 3 (Miss)
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (16) - 4 = 12 (Miss)

Salty:
1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (17) - 4 = 13 (Miss)
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (18) - 4 = 14 (Miss)

The crew of the Lady Sue stood at the guardrail bows and crossbows readied. Captain Loophook gave the order ”Fire!”. The majority of the shots were aimed at the unprotected crew manning the outrigger. The long ranged volley takes a devastating toll on the assembled foes with many falling to the deck screaming as arrows and bolts pierce their light armour and flesh. After 5 waves of projectiles very few of the men and women who previously manned the outrigger were standing. First blood was struck by the merchant vessel but the crew of the faster ship hit back with disciplined volleys of longbow fire from the main deck. A steady hail of arrows thumped into the rear of the Lady Sue. Despite the relative force of the barrage very few missiles hit the crew, due in large part to the temporary barricades lining the ship’s rail. After 2 such waves of direct fire the enemy bowmen decided to change their tactics. With deadly precision despite the range, the longbow armed archers fired their arrows high into the air attempting to negate the protective boards attached to the ships rails. A hard rain of iron tipped arrows thudded into the deck sowing confusion and panic among the crew of the Lady Sue. Morvan sheltering next to Elenia was shocked as the half elf let out a muted shriek as one of the enemy arrows struck her in the neck burying itself deep and causing the woman to slump forward unconscious and bleeding. Likewise Mirandir, who was preoccupied with the condition of the officers was caught in the shoulder blade with a well placed arrow sending him sprawling to the deck. Still conscious, he managed to steel himself enough to slump against the thickest part of one of the boards attached to the ships rail, resulting in him breathing heavily. Salty found himself to be the only uninjured member of his ballista with his fellow crew having taken the brunt of the arrow storm. Feeling helpless as his shipmates were dying around him he was shaken to his senses by a familiar voice. Toby ducked next to the half orc his usual smile now replaced by a look of determination. ”Salty help me with this!” The Halfling holds up a and a wand, the bag is tossed to the cook which clinked as Salty caught it. ”Pour one of those down the throat of the most injured and I will use this wand on the bumps and scratches. Oh and keep your head down!” inside the bag was a large number of glass vials containing sparkling blue liquid.

Morvan tries desperately to stop the bleeding around Elenia’s neck tearing the sleeve off her robe and attempting in vain to apply pressure to the wound. ”Out of the way Mr Greigor” Mr Stokes kneels beside the dying clerk opening her mouth pouring a vial of blue liquid straight down her throat.

Heal:1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Elenia wakes coughing to find Morvan and Mr Stokes looking at her. ”Stupid woman”. The quartermaster thrusts her spellbook into her chest saying ”Mage Armour; cast it!”

Mirandir struggles to retain consciousness as Toby and Salty come upon him. The Halfling stooping and the Cook half crawling with one knee dragging behind him in a comical fashion. Toby looks at the elf turns to Salty and says ”Potion” Salty gives Mirandir a vial and moves on to the next casualty. Toby looks hard at the elf and waves the wand.

Heal:1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
UMD:1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Heal:1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Having found an area that received relatively light fire Joan risks a quick peek at the enemy ship. On the outrigger a similar story to the one on the Lady sue was taking place injured sailors were being dragged or carried to the centre of the outrigger’s deck. As this happened from the main body of the ship a small figure clad in oilskins moves down the walkway and onto the outrigger. Standing in the centre of the wounded sailors the figure raises a rune etched shark’s jaw above their head. With a flash, a burst of salt spray emanates from the jaw covering the injured crewmen and women. Groggily the mass of bodies begins to move getting to their feet, their previous wounds now healed.

The ferocity of the bow fire suppresses the crew of the merchant vessel and those crew members not already doing so hunker down taking pot shots wherever possible. As a consequence the Lady Sue slows allowing the enemy ship, now revealed to be called ‘Bea’s Gambit.’, to close the distance quickly. At this range the siege ballistae become devastatingly accurate. 2 large fires erupt on the main deck of the Bea’s Gambit. In return a 6ft bolt trailing a light chain smashes into the workshop. Errol and Brayan lead a team trying to dislodge the bolt but their efforts are rendered useless as a second bolt drives itself into the deck. The chains tighten and begin to drag the 2 ships together. The volleys of arrow fire become single well aimed shots as the bulk of the archers ready boarding weapons. Captain Loophook draws her cutlass ”Crew to the guard rail! Stand by to repel borders!”

Initiative please along with any preparations you may want to do and where abouts you would like to stand (refer to the coordinates on Mirandir’s map use the side closest to the bottom of the screen for where the action will take place. Avoid standing on the bridge please the enemy cannot board this area directly at this time). I will need a post within 24hours of this post otherwise I will have to bot your character. (I know I have been slow with the posting of late for which I apologise, however I plan to pick up the pace going forward.) The first round combat will commence tomorrow.

NB. If you have any questions or actions regarding any of the above feel free to ask.

Cheers for updating guys pace will speed up from tomorrow expect at least 1 post per day from me.

they have got better but I was waiting for Nayli and Morvan. I will bot them tonight.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@salty: Your alchemical knowledge allows you to easily deduce that the liquid is a highly potent alchemist’s fire.

With all the crew at their stations the Lady Sue somehow picks up speed, holding the other ship at a constant distance. If there was any doubt left that the thin ship was friendly, this vanishes when a large red flag emblazoned with a pair of crossed flaming Scimitars is raised above the mast. The hopes of avoiding combat further decreases as smaller triangular sails are unfurled along the lines linking the main hull to the outriggers.
Now under extra sail, the hostile ship begins to gain on the Lady Sue. Upon the Lady Sue, the stern ballistae crew aim the large equipment at the approaching ship but Captain Loophook stops them from firing saying ”Wait till they get closer when our shots will count.”
The hostile ship doesn’t seem to share the Captain’s view with regards to their weapons. As soon as the Captain gives the order to hold fire, a large iron bolt flies into the sea to the left of the Lady Sue. The enemy ship continues to send probing shots like this. For the most part, these have little impact on Lady Sue other than intimidation. A few hit the rear quarter of the ship with a resounding thud.
Time passes in this manner and you start to see the hostile ship more clearly. It has a high prow with what previously looked like a ram actually revealed as being a reinforced metal prow. The main hull sweeps steeply down, meaning that the deck is very close to the water’s surface. However, over the top of this is a wooden lattice deck, upon which you can see the ship’s crew moving freely. The line of the hull sweeps up sharply at the back to where the bridge is presumed to be, but your vision of the precise nature of the bridge is obscured by the unfurled large red sails. At the top of the largest mast is a covered crow’s nest. The outriggers seem to be connected to each other by a sturdy wooden walkway without rails. This in turn is connected loosely to the main body of the ship, allowing both outriggers and hull to move independently for greater manoeuvrability. On top of the outriggers themselves, what looks like 8 crossbows fixed together into a form of siege machine can be seen.
Captain Loophook finally gives the order for the rear ballistae to return fire. At this range, the first two bolts fired from the Lady Sue hit the armoured prow of the approaching ship but deflect off harmlessly into the sea. She shouts: ”Aim high for the rigging and score me a hit, then use the fire shots to slow her down! This proves to be more difficult than it appears as the helmsman of the enemy ship is as skilled as Ms. Avalon and under evasive manoeuvres the ballistae crew of the Lady Sue struggle to land any direct hits. All the while the hostile ship closes in. The Captain bellows the order: ”Ms. Avalon, hold this course steady. Everyone else, prepare your ranged weapons. “

The approaching ship is around 200 foot away currently. You may have 5 shots each at it at this range before we go to a closer increment. you must specify who each shot aims at. Those without ranged weapons may use a heavy crossbow.

To hit outrigger crew AC 15 (no cover):
To hit ballistae crew (i. cover) AC 23:
To hit deck crew (s. cover) AC 19.
If you wish to do something other than take 5 shots please let me know as you may also get the opportunity to shoot. At this stage, initiative is not required. Good luck: I will post the return fire tomorrow!

sorry for the continued delay my internet is awful at the moment I aim to have an update by close of play tomorrow.

I need to do a lot of prep for the upcoming encounter so posting will be delayed now so it runs smoothly later. thank you for your patience.

The crew of the Lady Sue rush to action. There is a mixture of apprehension and excitement from amongst the crew. With speed and effectiveness, the crew don armour, predominately consisting of loose leather jacks and in some cases, heavy waxed coats. Most of the crew arm themselves with a variety of knives, hatchets, or shortblades. Many crew members also grab spare tholepins to use as clubs in the event they lose ownership of their weapons.
Morven arms himself and assists other crew members with their armour at the same time.
At the ballistae Toby greets Salty saying ”Salty, I’m glad you’re here. Give us a hand with this.” With that, Toby points to the covers, which Salty helps remove. Brayan then ensures that the mechanisms run free, without catching and that the sightings are aligned.
Mr Gleambright catches Nayli’s arm and points to a large plank of wood and 3 large metal brackets. He says: ”Attach these to the back of the board, then hang it over the guardrail at the side.” He is about to give Elenia a job when Mr Stokes calls for her by name. Elenia hurries over to Mr Stokes, who is standing with Errol and another sailor whom she had been introduced to as Fletch. ”Ms. Caledor, you know where the crates marked with the number B-2256 and B-2257 are. Please show Mr Fletcher and Mr Oakes where there are, and bring them up to deck, with a crowbar please. Elenia’s knowledge of the hold allows her to find the crates very quickly. Both crates have the same rough dimensions as a coffin but are substantially scaled up. Errol and Fletch struggle to haul the heavy crates back to the top deck but once on top, Elenia cracks the top of the crates open, revealing large ballistae bolts in once case and in the second, more ballistae bolts but instead of a sharp point, there is a glass looking globe containing a viscous green liquid.
On the bridge, the Captain calls Joan to her side. Captain Loophook has yet to don any armour or weaponry but is instead intently staring at the approaching red sails. She speaks out loud saying: ”By the Gods, she’s fast! She has a great blade as her prow She hands Joan the spyglass and says: []b”Ms. Porter, tell me what you make of the boat. Looking through the offered spyglass, Joan can make out the opposing ship. It is a thin hulled agile ship, similar in size to the Lady Sue, but using four large triangular sails, one per mast. The ship has two thin outriggers that barely touch the water as the thin boat drives hard towards the Lady Sue. Joan conveys this to the Captain who says ”Thank you, please assist me with my armour in my quarters.” Once inside the quarters, Joan assists the Captain in tieing straps, holding weapon belts and ensures that the Captain’s armour is sufficiently fitted. The Captain looks at Joan’s cutlass and says: ”May I see it? holding her hand out. She tests the weight and balance of the blade and puts it on her desk. ”in my weapons rack, you will find a better crafted version of this. Please use it for the battle should it be necessary.”
Temporally equip a masterwork cutlass.
As Ms Avalon has taken the helm, Mirandir takes to the lower deck and tightens sheets. The crew are wary of the elf due to his somewhat aloof nature until now.
With the efforts of the crew the Lady Sue gathers momentum. The sailors work industriously to push every ounce of speed out of the heavy boat. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the other ship is gaining on the Lady Sue with every passing minute and will be within ballistae range within two hours.
At certain places along the guard rail, the Lady Sue has large wooden sheets, which provide decent cover from conventional ranged attacks. Around each of the masts, there are boarding spears (martial weapons). On the deck there are also several racks of loaded heavy crossbows and piles of crossbow bolts neatly stacked. To use the ballistae requires a crew of 2 people per equipment. To fire it requires the feat: Weapon Proficiency, Siege Equipment but anyone can assist in loading them.
Discuss what your plans and preparations are. The boat is closing fast – if you have any plans for long range combat please make them known. I am aware of the rules for naval combat but for this encounter, we will solve the battle in a narrative fashion when/if/until any potential boarding action occurs. The first phase is long range combat – ballistae only.

Ms. Avalon raises a quizzical eyebrow at Joan. ”Sails, you say?” She then looks in the direction Joan is pointing and takes a spyglass out. She raises it to her eye, scanning the horizon. Just before Joan leaves, she says I can’t see any sign of sails, it doesn’t mean there are none there.”
Mirandir gives the rites as Morven and Nayli untie the bodies. They finish just as Elenia returns to the deck with the spare hammocks. Respectfully, each body is placed inside of the hammocks, with the hammock wrapped around them and then sewn shut. 2 pieces of silver are placed on each body, in each right hand.
As you work, word reaches the crew and many come out upon deck to pay their respects to their fellow seamen.
As Elenia is sewing up one of the hammocks, she notices something strange about the clothing on the body. It appears to be of fine quality and seems to be an undershirt, similar to the ones worn by the officers of this very ship. It would be reasonable to then assume that these 6 were not your average crew members. Mirandir also notices this but studying the soft skins on the hands of the bodies, he is fairly sure that the deceased sailors are indeed persons who held some form of rank.
With the rites for each body concluded, they are commended to the deep. The rowing boat is taken into the workshop for repair.
The Captain watches the whole event without saying a word but, when the last body pops into the water, she speaks to Joan: ”Show me where you saw these sails, Ms Porter.” and with that, she hands Joan a spyglass. Joan looks through the spyglass but is unable to spot the sails. The Captain then goes on to say: ”I need your sharp eyes on watch more than I need you mending and folding my clothes. Get to the bridge and alert myself or Ms. Avalon at the first sign of another ship.
You are all on edge for the rest of your watch. The wind drops noticeably, which does little to alleviate the situation or calm your nerves. Finally, on the horizon, Joan’s vigilance pays off as she spots once again, the 4 triangular blood-red sails with the aid of her spyglass. She calls to Ms. Avalon who takes the Captain’s spyglass from Joan and looks for herself. She says: ”Keen eyes Ms. Porter.
and hands the spyglass back to Joan. She moves to the ship’s bell ringing it vigorously, shouting ”All hands beat to quarters.” The cry is taken up by Mr. Winters who for some reason was standing on deck.
You all rush to your stations on the main deck and await orders from the Captain, who issues them thusly:
”We have spotted a ship on the horizon and due to recent developments have decided to treat it as hostile. We will attempt to run from her, however now is the time to equip weapons and armour if you have it, do so by watch. Mr Gleambright, see if you can knock up some defensive screens. Mr Winter, take a work party and make the ballistae ready, Ms. Avalon, I want you to take the helm. Mr Stokes, would you see if you can provide us with some magical assistance please? Everyone, double time please, this is not a drill.”
You now need to go and don your armour, weapons etc. Let me know if you are helping each other, or just trying to do it yourself as quickly as possible. The initial part of this phase, we will run in an abstract way, so I don’t need initiative from you yet. When you return, let me know which of the crew members you are going to assist: Sailing faster, preparing defences, preparing weapons, or something you might think of. If you wish to cast spells, know it could be hours before combat is fully joined, if it is at all, as you may get away 

back now big update coming tomorrow.

"Untie those poor souls. Mr Waverider Please would you give them some rites. Miss Caledor please fetch 6 spare Hammocks, a needle and some thread. Miss Porter please go and get the captain."Ms Avalon usual passive expression is now replaced by a worried look.

Joan scans the horizon and for the briefest second she spots sails in the far distance. Looking again however reveals nothing.

Hello all

Just to let you all know I will be away for the weekend with no internet access. so I will aim to post something up tomorrow and wont be posing again until Monday.

cheers all have a good weekend.

Judd

Thank you I was about to say this very thing. Mr stokes incurred the cost himself when he gave the spell to Elenia.

Ms Avalon says "Get a line on it."

Using a combination of grapples and billhooks, you manage to drag the wreckage alongside the ship. As you roll the small craft over you are greeted with a horrifying sight: 6 very dead bodies, you presume to be the former occupants of the boat have been tied by their waists to the boat's seats. The corpses are bloated with sea water and have several small bites taken out of them.

Heal DC 15:
The people had their fingers broken before death. Cause of death was clearly drowning. Bite marks are from fish. The bodies have been in the water for around a day or so.

Brayan pales at the sight of the bodies but looks at the hole on the boat. "Someone took an axe to that boat, but swung it badly at that - she would have taken a long while to capsize."

@salty:Theoretically yes but just take 10 dude! I will assume you pass. RP away.

@Elenia & Salty:- Seems fair, more in favour of RPing it out rather that roll offs but a spellcraft check would be a fine icebreaker.

In the cargo hold you spend most of your shift undoing the storm lashings on the cargo. However, you miss a large proportion of this and Mr Stokes has to pull you up and ask you to finish your work before you finish your shift. Due to this, you don’t get to chat with Mr Stokes about further training.
You read the Pathfinder Chronicle, absorbing as much of the information as you possibly can. The book was written by Tristan Verner. During his visit to the Uncharted Isles, Tristan describes in great detail the wild fauna and flora of the Isles. These include many species thought to have been wiped out by global catastrophes as well as other undiscovered species. He hypotheses that the Uncharted Isles form their own microcosm and events that have huge impacts elsewhere have some, little or no effect in the Isles, whereas some insignificant events elsewhere have altered the habitats within the Isles significantly. He also goes on to describe the strange geography there. The Isles are in the shape of a somewhat typical archipelago, interspersed by massive bodies of unfathomably deep water. He writes that the islands themselves appear to be reasonably flat, but have a varied and sometimes surprising topography, with microclimates forming sometimes snowy regions in close proximity to beaches. Finally, he seems perplexed by the lack of any settlements, primitive, tribal or otherwise.
@Joan

Joan is greeted by a pile of charts and books upon entering the Captain’s cabin. Ms Avalon and Captain Loophook appear to be talking quietly. When you enter, they stop talking immediately. Ms Avalon throwas the Captain a sharp salute and rounding on her heel, curtly leaves the room. The Captain says ”Ah, Ms. Porter, as you can see, the Master of Sail and I were reviewing the best course ahead. Would you be so kind as to start by tidying up these papers for me, thank you.”
Sense motive rolled. You get the impression that the Captain is irritated about something and is trying to disguise her feelings.
With that, the Captain excuses herself about 5 minutes later, making her way outside to the Bridge.

@Mirandir
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Profession: Sailor – you take 10, gaining 16.
You steer the ship true once more. Ms Avalon is absent during your shift. However, Toby, the Halfling chef is in charge of the deck. He leaves you to your duties, confident in your abilities. After a time, you are surprised to see the Captain appear on deck. She tells you to carry on, and takes a place at the rail, staring at the horizon.

@Morven
Errol holds his hands up and says ”Still with a smile, one day when you’ve got your own ship, I’m sure that you can ask the question before you go to hire the crew.”With that, Errol returns to his duties. Once again, you demonstrate a superb quality of work, even replacing a slightly storm damaged, frayed rope without adversely affecting the steering capabilities of the ship. You hear a shot from the bridge: ”Superb work once more, Mr Greigor. Keep it up!2You turn to see the Captain has taken her place at the top rail and is intently studying the horizon.

@Nayli
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Nayli:
Nayli, your years of light sleep at the Temple mean you wake to see Morven casting some kind of spell on Salty’s back. The wounds on Salty’s back begin to stop weeping and scab over.

Profession: ABS Take 10 = 15.
You feel reinvigorated after a good night’s rest, setting to work the following day. Mr Gleambright is not on watch but instead, Toby is on deck and tasks you with touching up some of the paint on the side of the ship. Alongside Brayan, you sit on top of a plank, which dangles down the side of the ship, with a rope attached at each end. The work isn’t particularly difficult and the salt spray kicked up by the breeze is a pleasant addition.

@Salty
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Salty continues to earn his nickname and once again, he over seasons the evening meal. The crew grumble in acceptance but no one outwardly comments on the state of the food.
You wake up after a deep refreshing sleep to find that your back is almost completely healed. Putting it down to your stoic orcish heritage, you go back on watch the following day with a small skip in your step, and take a small degree of pleasure in over exaggerated stretches in front of the Captain, who stands on the Bridge.
Seems likes something Salty would do.

@All
The day’s stretch into weeks and the watch pattern repeats. After 18 full days at sea, you are on watch when Morven spots something ahead of the ship in the water. He calls to the rest of the watch and as you get closer, It appears to be wreckage.

Ms Avalon summons your watch about mid afternoon to the deck along with a couple of other sailors, saying: ”Someone with sharp eyes, tell me what they think that is.”

Perception DC 15:
It appears to be an upturned lifeboat with a large hole in the side.

Post coming tomorrow.

@Elenia
Mr Stokes looks at you and says ”A circumstantially useful spell, and if that’s all you need, it’s very easy for me to teach you Enlarge Person. However, I can think of 2 more useful spells for you. I only have time to teach you one at this time.” He points to 2 pages of his spell book. You can now clearly read what was previously illegible. One page says Jump and the other says Touch of the Sea. You choose one of the spells offered and Mr Stokes teaches you how to cast it, enabling you to write it into your spellbook. At your mention of the Uncharted Isles book, he takes it off the shelf, letting out a chuckle and saying ”Want to find out where we’re going eh? Well, by all means, you may borrow the book. However, honestly? It doesn’t tell you much and whilst we will skirt close by, we won’t be entering the Isles. I’ve seen you reading – is it a factual or fictional book? If its factual, may I borrow it in exchange. If it’s fictional, never mind.”
Please gain one of: Jump, Touch of the Sea or Enlarge Person in your spell book. I will PM you the synopsis of the book.

@Joan
Like you, the Captain drinks slowly. ” I’ll tell you a story. It was when I was a midshipman. We were in a ship, hauling timber on a coastal route, with not a hint of weather, but somehow we ran aground on an ocean bar. We tried everything for the rest of the day to shift her off, to no avail . We had almost given up hope, when towards us a small fishing boat appeared and sailed alongside. There was only one fisherman aboard. He asked us ”Do you need a tow? I laughed and said ”Why not old man. Do you want to borrow our oars or do you have your own?” What he did next, I will never forget to this day. He smiled, held up a hand and cast a fishing line out into the deep water, beyond the bar. We waited – it must have been 3 to 4 minutes before he knocked on the side of the boat and tied his rod to our tow line. It was then, with a tremendous jolt that the ship hauled off the bar and refloated into clear water. We looked in amazement to see a huge fish sleek with bony scales and a long set of toothy jaws snap the tow line and dive back into the depths. I called to the old man to ask what that was. He just laughed and gave a one word answer: Gar!” He continued to laugh and sailed back towards the coast. “
The Captain finishes her tale then informs you she can map the rest of the course herself. You then go, returning back to the cabin where you fall asleep almost instantly, due to exhaustion.

@Nayli
Mr Gleamright looks at you in a wounded manner. ”I didn’t mean anything by it. I just like to reward hard work with better task. However the rope still needs making, so you might as well stay in here. “ He leaves the boatshed and you don’t see him ‘til the end of your watch.

@Mirandir
As you are thinking about him, Mr Gleambright hurries from the boatshed, with his face flushed red. Evidently, he or Nayli had said something that caused him some embarrassment.

@Morvan
Errol tosses you a dull copper piece, saying You’d be surprised how many professional sailors don’t know how to swim. Brayan now, he doesn’t mind telling folks about it. I’m sure with all the offers of lessons, he will be paddling like a hippocampus in no time! Don’t be too hard on him

@Salty
At some point during the next day, Toby approaches you looking worried. He informs you that it his duty to tell you that you will receive your punishment at 6 o clock this evening. He then offers you his hand, saying "Brave thing you did, saying Brayan. Don't let it go any further but you don't deserve what you're going to get."

Heal any damage and new profession rolls please. DC's are:17 due to having to unpack and the storm lashed gear.
As it is wont to do on the open sea the wind subsides to a light breeze. The sails flicker and the heavy boat dawdles along it's course. The weather remains overcast, threatening rain.

Shortly after 6PM the Captain summons everyone to the deck. She speaks to the assembled crew in a loud but somber tone. "As you are aware a crew member fell overboard recently during the storm. Despite showing bravery and loyalty to a fellow shipmate, Mr Salt disobeyed a direct order given by myself. The ship's Charter is very clear on this and it is to my extreme displeasure that we assemble to meet out fair punishment this evening. Mr Stokes please: read the charges."

Mr Stokes clears his throat and reads from a large book. "1 count of disobedience contravening a direct order. 1 count insubordination. 1 count of being lax in undertaking of duties.” Mr Stokes finishes and the Captain begins to speak again, directly to Salty. ”I have taken into account your bravery and selflessness and so my judgement for the offences perpetrated is that you shall receive 7 lashes for insubordination. Furthermore, the person to dispense these shall be Mr Gold. (Brayan) If I see you holding back Mr Gold, there will be severe consequences. Mr Salt, if you would step forward please, and remove your shirt. “ Salty does this and wraps his arms and is shown by two crew members to a capstan at the bow of the ship. He is given a piece of rope to loop around the capstan. It is loosely tied around one of his wrists, with it held in his other hand, securing himself.

The Captain steps down from the top deck and she hands a short whip to Brayan. It consists of 9 knotted lengths of plaited yarn attached to a whip handle. Brayan somberly moves to stand next to Salty. He offers Salty a piece of wood for Salty to bite down on. Brayan goes on to say ”Salty – every fibre of my being is sorry for what I have to do. If I could take the lashings for you, I gladly would.”

The Captain says ”You many commence."

7d4 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 2, 1, 3, 1) = 16

After the 4th lashing connects with Salty's back, he falls unconscious to the deck. The Captains holds her hand up, looking slightly sickened. She says "I think the lesson is well received. Please wake him up. Give him a dose of cure light wounds and 2 cups of rum; 1 for him to drink and 1 for his back!" 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Mr Stokes moves forward and complies with the Captain's order. Salty wakes up, looking horrific. His back is now freshly scarred. With that, the Captain dismisses the crew back to their duties. Your watch returns to the crew quarters for your rest period. Errol is strangely quiet ans his usual grin is noticeably absent. Brayan looks as sick as a dog.

Interact with each other as you wish - you are now off watch

No Worries Nayli RL takes priority.

@Elenia. Depends what you are looking for if you want to find out about the Uncharted Isles then you know he has a book on it. For the rest of the shelf yes you may take 10.

@Morvan. You call upon all of your reserves of strength and willpower to make it though the next few hours even picking up the slack where other the other sailors falter. Whilst you are trimming a sail Errol approaches you and begins to help. ”You don’t say much my friend, but there are few who work more diligently. A copper for your thoughts?”

@Nayli. Exhaustion weighs heavily upon your limbs and your movements become slower and more deliberate. Mr Gleambright taps you on the shoulder mid way through your shift and ushers you into the workshop. At first you are convinced he is going to pull you up for the pace of your work, but instead he points to a chair ”Sit down please. Every time I have seen you over the past 3 days you have been in the thick of the action. It is to be commended truly; I can only recommend you receive a pay bonus to the captain. If you keep up the good work I see no reason you won’t receive it also. I know that does little to relive the ache in your joints, so for the remainder of your shift I need you to Repair the damaged rope. It isn’t the most prestigious job but you do get to sit down whilst doing it. “

@Salty. The already tired crew are extremely vocal about the quality of their meal. As more and more complaints are heard you cannot restrain your anger any further and hurl a ladle across the crew quarters towards a human who just insulted the meal you have just prepared. He stands and points at you “Oi Watch it you green skinned lunatic. It’s a good job you saved old Brayan otherwise I’d swing for you. ” he sits back down saying under his breath. ”Throws about as well as he cooks.”

@Mirandir. Ms Avalon nods her head slightly in response to your compliments. “I’ve Lived 54 years under this sun, spent 50 of them on ships, 48 at sea and 47 and 6 months. Behind the wheel of ships. She laughs it is an odd sight. ”That probably sounds more impressive to someone who isn’t a pure blooded elf. Suffice to say I’ve had lots of practice and that’s the first bit of advice I can give you. The second is to know your ship seam to seam. Every one is different; this one for instance is classed as an Absalom Junk, I’ve sailed 3 in the same class and not one of them steered from the centre like this old lady does.” She looks down the length of the boat. ”An old captain of mine used to say if the ship builder had a bad breakfast it might ruin a boat. For if he’s hungry he sinks a run of nails too deep into the hull, that in turn makes her float an inch lower in the water, which makes her unresponsive, so much so as she lists too much in bad weather and takes 50 plus souls to the bottom of the sea.”The master of sail pauses for a long time before saying. ”It is your skill that overcomes a boat builders bad days. Finally know your crew, as a helmsman they are an extension of your will. I will let you into a secret. During a storm I don’t see people on deck; I see cogs in a machine, I see fractions and timescales. I watch the crew at work and I know how they react to the ship and vice a versa. Heed my advice or not. It works for me; it may not work for you. Now in the spirit of lesson one please take the helm and practice you steering.” she moves from the sailing deck back towards her cabin. Calling as she goes ”Mr Gleambright the ship is yours.”

@Elenia. You accost Mr Stokes in his office you try to sound sincere but just come across as blunt. Mr Stokes doesn’t look phased and puts down his pen and looks at you. ”Yes. I thought you might have. Good work by the way. I don’t like to see crew drown, especially when they can be easily saved. I fear your friend Mr Salt may receive a rather harsh lesson in humility soon though.” He takes his Spell book from the book shelf and asks ”What is it precisely that you want to learn about?” He holds a hand up to stop you before you can answer ”First. What School do you specialise in? I am a Transmuter but I cannot help you much with the Evocation School.”

@Joan(Sorry thought you had +8 in diplomacy.). Sense motive: (re-rolled in secret please discount your score.) You think the captain is being genuinely nice to you; this might be because she is tired, she genuinely needs your help or some other reason you can’t put your finger on at this time.

The captain mainly uses you as a sounding board for her ideas. However you have the good sense to give honest opinions and even make a suggestion or two. After a time she asks you to get a bottle of Ice wine brandy from her cupboard and 2 glasses. She pours the brown liquid into both glasses and offers you one. ”Joan tell me about yourself. Have you any family? Where were you born? “

It is finally your chance to get some sleep you fall gratefully into your hammocks and go to sleep almost instantly.

Please remove the exhausted condition. I do not want to stop any further conversing you may have please feel free to chat to anyone. We will go on when everybody is ready.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Mirandir and Nayli jump into action hauling ropes and raising the main sail, with assistance from Errol and another sailor the sheet is let out in good order. Seeing this Morvan lends a hand on the fore sail with a group of other sailors. With her sails now full the Lady Sue turns her back to the wind and is propelled almost immediately with a burst of speed.

“Excellent work ladies and gentlemen.” Captain Loophook says. ”Get some of the crew down for a couple of hours rotate them regularly. Ms Avalon the bridge is yours.” And with that she makes her way down the stairs and into her cabin. Just before she enters the room she calls out ”Miss Porter. Attend to me if you would be so kind.

Joan rushes to the captain’s aid glad at least to be out of the driving rain for now. ”Please hang up my coat and fetch my charts and navigation instruments from where you packed them away.”

Again Joan obliges without saying a word, while the half orc changes into a fresh set of clothes. Now Changes Captain Loophook moves over to the desk and looks at the course she had plotted. Joan instinctively moves away towards the pile of wet garments when the captain stops her. ”Joan. Well done with the rope. Quick thought turned to accurate deed and I truly appreciate that in my crew.” She sighs ”Know that I will take little pleasure in disciplining Mr Salt but it must be done, you understand of course.” She looks Joan deep in the eyes and the usual hardness is absent.

”One more thing do you know anything of charts? I could use a hand plotting our forward course.“

Joan: Please make a DC 15 Knowledge Geography Check.

If you pass.:
The captain confers to you that the seas around the southern edge of the Uncharted Isles are perilous and poorly mapped so a little detective work will be required to choose the best course. You spend hours poring through charts and books discussing ideas and theorising currents and weather patterns. Please make a Diplomacy check (DC 13/18/23/28)

If you fail.:
The captain thanks you for your effort but asks if you would send for Mr Stokes. You return to your usual duties. You fall back into the crews watch pattern. you will need a perception check (DC10) to hear what is being discussed.

Brayan now recovered is truly grateful to all of you, but especially to Salty. ”You saved my life I will never forget this. Never.” when you suggest again that he should learn to swim he seems to agree but stipulates that he will learn when the sea is calm.

The ship drives hard through the heavy weather but the immediate danger is over it seems. The Storm continues for another 2 full days in this fashion. You and the rest of the crew are sent in groups of 4 to rest for 2 hours at a time. In this way you remain tired but functional. After spending a total of three and a half days in the storm with little to no sleep, the wind finally begins to die down by around 8 o’clock. The wind remains strong but the waves and rain have subsided. The crew are dismissed back to their watches.

Profession checks all.

You don't need a perception check to over hear the captain this time. She is shouting over the wind and not trying to keep it secret. so act on the information as you wish.

Elenia: You only know that the Uncharted Isles are a group of small islands in the sea you are currently in. Very few people have ever been there almost none have returned. It is because of this that many of the fictional adventure books you read are set in this location. Strangely enough you noticed Mr stokes had a book on them in his office.

The rain and wind lash the ship ceaselessly throughout the morning. By midday you are all exhausted even Joan and Elenia are required to maintain the integrity of the sails. Whilst on deck on the bridge you all overhear the captain saying to Ms Avalon ”Who knows how long this weather will last. I’m making the decision, we run to the north.”

”That might take us close to the reefs of the uncharted Isles.” The half elf says.

”It’s a risk we are going to have to take. We won’t enter the archipelago. And I trust in your ability and the ability of your sailors.”The captain turns to the crew on deck. Shouting to be heard over the sound of the storm she says ”I’m sick of this wind. Unfurl sheet and let’s head north.”

Those who can please make a Profession: Sailor or Able seawoman check with a +2 (DC15) I need at least 2 out of 3 passed checks or something bad will happen. (you are not able to take 10)

Yet!

Just felt I needed to clarify, as it is a fairly common house rule. We can implement Crit fails if you would like. I know how much you like them. :)

Quote:
The Captain retorts Then he will drown, won't he, Mr Oaks? No-one goes overboard. I'm not losing anymore souls!"

The words are barely out of the Captain’s mouth when Salty quaffs 2 viscous bottles of liquid. His muscles bulge outwards and he grows in size, giving out a bestial roar. He then commences a loping run towards the stern rail, leaping at the last perceived moment. Unfortunately, he mis-times his jump and catches his trailing foot on the wooden balustrade, resulting in him plunging headfirst into the swirling water and going under. His poor dive leaves him in the wake of the large ship and he flounders for a moment in the undertow.

Realising Brayan is in trouble, Salty galvanises his nerves and makes strong arm pulls towards the surface. Despite his Orcish heritage granting him darkvision, he is thankful for the light that Nayli’s spell provides, as he is better able to orientate himself in the swell.

On deck, Joan hurls a rope out at the drowning dwarf. Her throw is marginally short of Brayan. Had he been a swimmer, he could have easily swam the five or so feet to it, but he continues to panic heedless of the efforts above on deck to save him.
In the water, Salty hits a comfortable stroke, and makes his way towards Brayan, saying through mouthfuls of seawater ”Easy sailor, I’ve got you.” Salty extends a beefy arm around the dwarf and with his free hand, grabs onto the end of the trailing rope.

Back on deck, Elenia steps up beside Joan. Whilst reading aloud from a leather bound tome, she waves her hands in an precise manner, speaking in an intricate language, composing of clicks, exhales and chitters she touches the rope.

The wet rope becomes almost impossible for Salty to maintain a firm grip on. Just as it is about to slip out of his grasp, the rope, as if sentient, coils around both Salty’s and Brayan’s waists, and finished by tying itself in a simple but sturdy reef knot.

Errol shouts a cheer and rushes to the rope, saying ”Don’t just stand there, haul ‘em back in quickly. Elenia, Joan and a couple of free crew begin the strenuous task of assisting Salty’s swim back to the ship. Once close, Salty is guided around to one of the ladders built into the side of the boat. Brayan climbs up first assisted heavily by the deck crew, with Salty following afterwards, requiring less help.

Once back on board, the crew give Salty heart pats on the back, shaking his hands and tousling his hair, offering words of praise. The Captain shouts to the crew ”I don’t know why you’re all cheering. We will all be over unless we get this boat under control and out of irons soon. Mr Salt, I will not forget this act of insubordination, but at this time, take yourself and your shipmate below and get dry.”

Whist all this is happening Mirandir and Morvan get the rogue sail under control lashing it down tight once again. Once the sail is secure Ms Avalon hauls the ship back down a wave and into the groove of the waves once again. The storm continues throughout the rest of the night and shows no sign of abating come the morning...

You are all still on duty gain the fatigued condition.

keep rolling.
You need to fail at least 22 more before Brayan starts to drown
24 before you start to drown. FYI in this campaign you cant crit or auto fail a skill check.

yes quite correct. Even so you still don't get it close enough.

@Joan: Was just thinking about this the short answer is if you hit your throw NO. However I grossly misread the AC which is 5 Plus 10 for every 10ft over the first 10ft so 25 total even with high ground bonuses you won't get close but however the rope only scatters 5ft away from the target in a random direction so salty will need to take a dunk.

@Mirandir: I Know right!

@ Elenia
I will give you the benefit of the doubt and let you have animate rope prepared this one time as it is in your spell book. However, make sure you are more prepared with what spells you have - in combat I will take what you have on your sheet.

@ Salty - Unfortunately, you don't have touch of the sea in your formula book, otherwise I would extend the same logic as above.

@ Joan
Brayan isn't a strong swimmer so will not proactively grab the rope - he is panicking too much but not necessarily underwater all the time. It will be important for you to roll a ranged throw attack to get the rope as close as possible to Brayan. This will help Elenia to animate the rope around Brayan.

Edit: Thanks for the roll.

So... This is how I understand the plan Salty will drink his potions etc. For a +7 to swim. (assuming you drop excess gear on the deck but take minus 3 if you wish.) He will then dive in and Make 2 successful Swim (DC20) checks or 1 successful Jump (DC15) and 1 successful swim check, to get to Brayan. If you fail the Jump then you will need to make the 2 checks.

At the same time Joan will throw a rope as accurately as possible. (Vs AC 10 25) and Elenia will animate the rope around Salty and Brayan and tie it around them.

Morvan and Mirandir will get the sail under control.

Is this correct? We will wait to see if Nayli wants to add anything before I describe what actually happens.

@ Salty: Please start rolling checks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You make your way up on deck.

When on deck, you can see the storm cloud in the distance, and feel the wind on your faces beginning to pick up. The sails start to flap at the edges with the increasing wind power.

The Captain is standing by the helm barking out orders. She says "Mr Greigor and Mr Waverider, prepare to reef the mains'il. Ms. Belequa, assist Mr Gleambright and his team with clearing down the decks and make safe any loose items. Prepare to batten down the hatches! Mr Oakes, rig the jack lines and make sure everyone on deck has clipped on! Mr Salt, follow Mr Winters and make sure all cooking equipment is stowed away. Ms Caledor, take 4 crew and meet Mr Stokes down in the cargo hold. I need the cargo made secure. Tie those knots tight! Ms Porter, my cabin is secure, however please ensure that the crew quarters are made ready!

You all set about your tasks with haste. The Officers continue to issue orders. Errol comes to you all in turnm with a length of rope and a coiled metal hook on the end. He says:"Tie this round your waist and make sure you clip on the reef lines at all times when on deck.

Whilst undertaking your tasks, the first heavy droplets of rain start to fall, making the deck a bit slippery underfoot.

In the distance, you are alarmed as a fork of lightening shoots out of the sky, hitting the sea and a peal of thunder accompanies the now inky black, heavy rolling waves.

You all finish your jobs, finding time to assist others where needed. Ms Avalon takes the helm and on the Captain's command begins to take the ship in a S=shaped course, attempting to ride the groove of the waves. The look of sheer grim determination as this fairly slight elf wrestles with the ship makes you develop a new found respect for her.

All of a sudden, disaster strikes!

randomised hit:
1d6 ⇒ 2

One of the sheets attached to the head sail comes loose at the sail end due to a slipped knot. The line flicks back into the boat with a twang. It hits Joan across the back causing her 1d6 ⇒ 3 points of non lethal damage and forcing her to make an acrobatics check Reflex save, or fall prone to the deck.

The sudden loss of tension on the sail causes the aft end of the sail to be picked up at the mercy of the wind. In turn, despite her formidable sailing prowess, Ms. Avalon loses control of steering momentarily, and the Lady Sue takes a large wave full abeam on the port side.

Brayan is knocked over board into the swirl before he had a chance to hook on to the reef line.

Captain Loophook shouts to the crew: "Besmara's teeth! Heave-to and get a line out to him.No-one goes overboard and for all the Gods, secure that sail!

You hear Errol shouting from the lower deck "Brayan can't swim!

The Captain retorts Then he will drown, won't he, Mr Oaks? No-one goes overboard. I'm not losing anymore souls!"

Someone trained in it must pass a profession sailor check to secure the sail back to a seaworthy position. Also, Brayan is in the water and will die unless you disobey a direct order from the Captain. I need your character emotions and what their planned actions are. Roll initiative to see who acts first in the event it becomes necessary. Feel free to discuss in discussion thread.
