Flying has not been done in any fantasy mmo that I know of. The coding alone would be ... interesting.

I seriously doubt we'll see flying combat unless its restrictive in some way or is in it's own instance/dungeon and not allowed elsewhere.

I have to admit that either having a young dragon companion or better yet, being able to play one (I know ... not a good idea) would be awesome.

As for Dire bat farms ... at least there would not be any Stirges (Dire mosquito) around :p

You need to read up on the plans for the game. Players will be able to engage eachother at random all over the map. If you are in a lawful area the guards will come in to help but basically this game is the wild west. PVP can happen anywhere, anytime, for any reason.

With that in mind EVERYTHING needs to be looked at from the prism of how it will effect PVP before it is implemented. That may not be true for every game but it is certainly true here. Like in SWTOR PVE abilities should all be given purpose for PVP so it isn't just your PVE or your PVP build. Its your build, and you can use it 100% of the time.

Instant-kills would be broken in PVP and I don't think we should have entire super-powerful abilities that are PVE only. So leave them out of the game. The ONLY acceptable way I can see insta-kill abilities implemented is if they insta-kill most NPCs and just do a high amount of damage to other players and more powerful boss-like NPCs. Save or die = broken crap.

I read up on the game and I know that this will be a PvP based game with some adventuring thrown in here and there.

now to the subject at hand-

As Pathfinder is 3.5 DnD based there were some save or die spells in the game. The vast majority that were in 2.0 and 3.0 were taken out and changed to heavy damage rather than save or die.
Of the few that are left, these are pretty high level and sure, in a MMO would be broken. I don't expect to see these.

The point of my post was that I see this nearly exact same post on all message boards no matter the type of game.

This was more a sarcastic/snarky comment than anything else poking fun at the same pvp arguments that always seem to crop up.

My apologies for my snarky post.

I won't even think twice about never buying another Paizo product again if PFO turns out to be just another attempt at grabbing a teat on the MMO money cow.

Make your customers proud. Don't just follow the money, because you won't get mine if you do.

And this type of post helps put your style of play upfront how?

If this is your strategy ... good luck :)

Ha!

I see this post on ALL betas I get into :p

Same arguments ... different abilities is all.

Anyone remember city of heroes before PvP was added in?

Was a pretty fun game before then :)

Not saying I dont like to get my PvP on -

I just dont think all games need to revolve around it.

Hrmmm ... just remembered where I am and the fact that the creators all enjoy the game EvE.

Nevermind. Nothing to see here, move along.

Well ...

There are those who can live the game and those who cannot.

Who to cater too?

Quite the balancing act if you ask me.

Nice to see some Dev/Ceo feedback :)

Griefing is an unavoidable consequence in any game where there is Open PvP that does not acknowledge a gap in power.

People will be unable to compete on their 'level' and will go take out their aggression on new players.

Oh I understand that ... I was just shocked at the large numbers I encountered :(

There were 3 friendly people I met. Three. All others were more or less either trolling or griefing. Was sad really to see that. It let me know that once you reach a certain point in that game, that is all there is left to do if your not PvPing.

You mean that PFO should be like WoW just to be sure?

Not sure he meant THAT.

Personally, I think that wow has had a great success but it can be ... blah.
PFO is still in the design phase and thus all we see is subject to change.
Would I like to see PFO a WoW clone? No, I would not. That will NOT make the game a success.
Some of the ideas that were listed in the blogs seem promising (random dungeon spawns, small threats that grow into large ones like a kobold
camp left unchecked) but these are not unheard of (Istaria does this to a lesser extent).
For now I am going to keep a close eye on things and see what else crops up and if I get a great idea, I'll drop it in here and see what happens with it.

I played Eve for about a month. I at first was pretty excited until I found that it was loaded with griefers who had nothing better to do than mess with anyone who had just started playing the game.
There were also some really great people who I also met, but I have to admit that the jerks far outnumbered those who were decent.

If this game will be EVE based, then my guess is that it may attract the same jerks that inhabit Eve.

Granted my experience was limited ... but I gave it a month. After that, I had no desire to do nothing but get either ganked for just trying to explore or robbed when I try to mine and since those robbing were far more experienced than I ... it did not end well for me :(

Even with some friends on it was no real help.

In an eve type of environment, you are either in a guild or you are dead meat as a beginner player. That simple.

NOTE: This was MY experience - yours may be very different ... at least I hope it was!
