Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Oh man, I'm out for a couple nights this weekend, and come back to find it's all go!!

Glad we were able to finish up, it was a fun scenario and fun group; thanks everyone!

GM, have sent you my email, and here is day job roll:

Day Job - Profession (herbalist): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Flask of alchemist's fire ready, Crin shuffles around the pillar, closer to Nikomedes, and where he can get a clean line of sight on the dragon. He lines up his shot - he's only going to get one shot at this - then hurls it at the undead wyrm.

Ranged attack with alchemist's fire: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Wow! Can you score a crit with alchemist's fire? Here is the confirmation roll if you can.
confirmation roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5 Ahh, nuts.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

For a moment, Crin is tempted. Seriously, ultimate power would be fun.

But really, did the demon have to disguise itself as a gnome? That was just wrong, and it made Crin mad. Sure enough, he'd like to be an all-powerful spellcaster, but he'd like to feel he'd earned it, and didn't want help from some stink-horned demon anyway.

The diminutive gnome drops into a combat stance, ready to blast the demon with a spell if it starts to get any funny ideas.

Ready action to cast magic missile at demon if it finds a way out of the circle.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Sorry folks for being AWOL last few days, screen time has been restricted and what time I found I was wanting to catch up with the games I'm GMing. This is exciting stuff!

Crin's attention fastens on the other gnome. "Wow, so you've been here a long time? Who are the Thrallkeepers? I like the hair, good shade. I had pink hair once, but found no one take me seriously. Funny that." Ever eager to help a fellow gnome, Crin starts to move forward to help the emaciated looking gnome. But his eye is drawn to the concentric circles; now, why do they sound so familiar?

Know (arcana): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Knowledge (arcana) check to understand the nature of the runes. As an afterthought, threw in a Spellcraft check for the same as well. Sense Motive check to determine the gnome is genuine; Crin is always inclined to help a gnome in need, so unless he sees a reason that the gnome isn't all he appears to be he'll try to disrupt the circle.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

"Well, that's unexpected." Crin looks round at everyone. "Sorry guys for sucking away all your strength with the wand. It's just temporary, I think. But don't worry, I'll protect you!" The little gnome inches forward to peek over the ledge. He tries to gauge how deep the shaft is.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11 To see how far down the shaft goes.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Ok, Crin fails save voluntarily. Crin puts his shoulder to the dais, takes a deep breath, and pushes with all of his might. He doesn't see anything happen.

Strength check with bonus: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

"Yeah, it's worth a try. Though I don't feel any brawnier standing up here." opines Crin in response to Shayla's suggestion. He jumps up and down a couple times on the dais, as if it might shake something loose.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

"Hmmm, this is interesting." At Strat's suggestion, Crin steps onto the dais and pushes on the doors, curious at this turn of events.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Actually, Crin is a fey-bloodlined sorcerer. He just happens to also like music. And magic.

"Shayla, wait! Don't step on the.." Crin cries, too late as the elf steps on the dais to try to force the doors open with her strength. He winces as magical energies drain away her strength. "Sorry, I thought there might be some kind of magical trap there."

Crin resumes his study of the statue of the old human. The words of the riddle keep tumbling in his head, but don't quite come together. "Nikomedes, do you think it was the wand that zapped Shayla? If so, we'll never get that door open. Unless, do you think this statue moves? Like we could point it the other way?" The little gnome pushes against the round base of the statue, trying to see if there's any give to it.

Not sure what is needed, so will make a few rolls now so I don't hold things up:
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Strength check: 1d20 ⇒ 9

What is Kalkamedes doing during all this? Is he keeping still or is he trying to move on?

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

On entering the structure, Crin's eyes light up in wonder. The first thing he does is summon a spell that illuminates his hand in light, allowing him to wave his hand around like a torch. Then he has a look around, trying to understand what this place is all about. "Kalk, don't wander off now."

First round, cast light. Second round, cast detect magic and move around the chamber past the archway, looking for any magical auras. Third round, inspect the seven-pointed star and the weathered script on either side of the entrance, making a Knowledge (arcana) roll if that's any help. Unless, of course, we get ambushed after round one.

Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

HP 7/7
Spells Cast
1st - reduce person, magic missile x2
0 - detect magic x2, acid splash x2, light
spell-like ability - speak with animals

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

As Strat unleashes a wave of positive energy, Crin feels invigorated as it washes over him. He looks for another target, dragging Kalkamedes along a bit as he jumps between the man and Nikomedes. Looking around for thugs shooting at him, he spots one thug and hurls another magical glob of acid at him.

If it's possible to do so while still holding on to Kalkamedes, Crin moves diagonally as indicated on the map, throwing an acid orb at Thug #5.

ranged touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3

HP 7/7 Thank you Strat!
Spells Cast
1st - reduce person, magic missile x2
0 - detect magic, acid splash x2
spell-like ability - speak with animals

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin reels from the impact as he takes a hit in the chest. Blood gushes out, and he retaliates with a silvery magic missile more out of instinct than conscious thought. Cringing by Kalkamedes' side, the little gnome sorcerer hunkers down and hurls an acid orb at the next thug in his line of sight. What he really wants to is make himself small, run and hide like a rabbit, but two things are stopping him. One, he doesn't want to leave Kalkamedes alone in the middle of the fight. Two, the group is surrounded - where would he go?

Throw acid splash at Thug #4.
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2

HP 7/1 Yikes!
Spells Cast
1st - reduce person, magic missile x2
0 - detect magic, acid splash

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Sharp eyes, but a bit slow off the mark?

Just in case Crin can act, and so that I don't hold up the action, Crin's first action is to blast to blast the nearest thug (Thug #1) with the magic missile that he's had at the ready.

magic missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin follows behind, continuing to help Strat keep a lead on Kalkamedes. The little gnome keeps his readied spell in reserve, in case of ambush. "Are we there yet?" he squeaks.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Wordlessly Crin moves closer to help Strat hold on to Kalkamedes while Shayla moves towards the trees. Waiting to see what happens, he starts to call to mind a spell - just in case.

Ready acid splash to cast at nearest opponent if the party is attacked.
Acid Splash Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
acid damage 1d3 ⇒ 3

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

GM, the men ahead in the trees, are they blocking Kalkamedes' progress? Or can we go around them?

Crin edges a bit closer to the others. "Maybe they'll just leave us alone?" he wonders out loud.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

"Two? I count three, at least. They've got camouflage." The little gnome brings his hands up, ready to hurl a magical missile at the men in the trees if they become hostile.

Ready action to cast magic missile if the men try to attack. Target closest opponent to the group.
magic missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Result! Go on, attack us - I dare ye!

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin fairly glows under the praise from the two ladies. As the group continues on, he tries to look out for other obstacles or hazards that might get in Kalkamedes' way.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Impressive kill with the bear!

Crin is genuinely sorry that the bear died, but his first thought is to go check on Shayla. "Shayla, are you alright?" He casts a curious glance up at Kalkamedes as he follows along.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin wrings his hands for a moment as he realizes he's not going to talk the bear into leaving Shayla alone, concern for his comrades warring with his reluctance to harm animals. In the end, he takes a step back, out of reach of the bear. "Sorry bear." He raises a hand, and a silvery mote of magical energy darts out to strike at the bear.

5 foot step away from the bear, cast magic missile at it.

Magic Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

HP 7/7
Spells Cast
1st - reduce person, magic missile
0 - detect magic
spell-like ability - speak with animals

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

"Bear! Don't eat my friend! She will give you a sore stomach, you'll not like it. Really, I think there are fish in the stream north of here, big, juicy salmon. Don't you want to go have a look?" Crin continues his odd grumblings and growlings as he attempts to communicate with the bear, fighting to keep a note of desperation out of his voice - Shayla looks like she's in a bad way.

Bluff check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 Speak with animals lasts for one minute.

I could always shrink the bear...

HP 7/7
Spells Cast
1st - reduce person
0 - detect magic
spell-like ability - speak with animals

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin moves forward and throws up his hands to the bear, growling to the it: "Wait, bear! We can give you something much tastier than the elf, I'm sure. See how scrawny she is?" Turning his head to the others, he urges, "Quick! Anyone have any food to feed this bear? We don't have to kill it, as long as we can distract it. Anyone have any fresh meat? Fish?" Inwardly, Crin is cursing himself for thinking this night-time mission wouldn't require any rations. He's also conscious of being just the right size to be bite-sized morsel for a hungry bear.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Wanting to help Shayla, Crin's fingers stray towards his crossbow, but he's indecisive. Shayla needs help, but he doesn't really want to hurt the bear if he can help it. Studying the bear for a moment, he summons some of his innate gnomish talent to speak to the bear. "Hey, bear! Why are you hurting my friend! If we go away will you go away?" If the bear doesn't react, Crin reluctantly takes up his crossbow and fits a bolt.

Cast speak with animals as a spell-like ability. If possible, will attempt a Diplomacy/Charisma check to get on the bear's good side.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Great to have you back Strat!

Apologies as well for missing the last few days, have not been well and it kinda floored me. Back in fighting shape now.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

A sheepish look crosses Crin's face as he wrings the water out of his clothes. "Yeah, thanks for that. Guess I didn't think that through, completely. Are we still heading north?" Crin looks quizzically over at Shayla as she walks beside Kalkamedes.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Is Kalkamedes back to full size again?

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Reminder to self: stop trying to kill the lead NPC.

"Whoa! Grab him!" Crin is initially gratified to see that his little spell has worked, but upon seeing Kalkamedes shrink down to his own size the gnome becomes horrified to see the man immediately go underwater. He dives in, trying to pull him up but only succeeds in getting dragged down as well. Only rising air bubbles show where the two were standing, and the rope and harness trailing into the water.

grapple check 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 - If I've ended up drowning Kalkamedes and the game ends, this will be my, like, second-shortest PFS adventure. But so far I think it's going well.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

If the spell takes hold, Kalkamedes should shrink to half his height (Small size) and 1/8th his weight. He gains a +2 bonus to Dex, attack rolls and AC but a -2 penalty to strength. Duration is one minute.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

I might have missed it, but did we receive faction missions for this quest? I was thinking I couldn't remember what mine was, but when I looked through the threads I didn't see a mention of them.

And as for the party, it seems there are less of us than were on the recruitment thread, so we are:

Crin
Strat Spineshanks
Shayla Amye
Nikomedes Diogenes

Anyone else? Just wanted to know, so I don't ignore anyone in my posts.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin grunts and summons arcane energies to his command. "Hold on to him, he may try to fight against the magic. I'm not used to trying this on someone else, but I find it useful for helping me hide." Crin casts the spell on the former paladin, looking to see if it takes effect.

"The spell's only going to last about a minute. So if we can skirt the bog and keep out of the water, all the better. His smaller size should make it easier if he struggles."

Cast reduce person on Kalkamedes. He can make a Fortitude save against DC 14 to resist.

HP 7/7
Spells cast
1 - reduce person
0 - detect magic

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

With the swampy water becoming deeper, Crin starts casting about for something to help Kalkamedes and those minding him. "Hold on guys, maybe there's a log or something he can float on. He doesn't look like he's in the mood for swimming, and I doubt he can breathe underwater." Crin looks about all over, but quickly gives up hope of finding anything that might be used for a raft. Baldric's spurtle! Where are all the logs? Don't all swamps have floating logs for frogs and toads to jump on, and for swamp folk to use as rafts? What kind of place is this?

Crin turns back to the group. "I have good news and bad news. The bad news is, I can't find anything in this in this blasted bog that we could use as a raft for him. Good news is, I do have a spell that could make him smaller, and easier to carry or keep above water. Though we may need to adjust his harness."

Perception check to look around for raft material - 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

If you think it's helpful I can cast reduce person on Kalky, it would reduce his weight to 1/8th if we have to carry him.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin's jaw drops as he witnesses the sleeping man lurching forward. What kind of sorcery is this? A sudden thought pops into his head, and he whips around to speak to Strat. "Ohh, ohh! Strat, are you able to cast protection from evil? I wonder if it might make a difference to Kalkamedes."

Crin might not be strong enough to hold Kalk back if need be, but he could keep just ahead and scout for any pitfalls that might be in his way.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

I'll be out of town for a couple days, so feel free to NPC Crin if need be. Should be back posting by the weekend though.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin just looks on in bewilderment as Shayla seems to be holding a one-sided conversation. "Shayla? What's Gamin saying to you?" His voice is tinged with concern.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

"Whoa, this is a bit weird. I've never spoken to a sword before. At least, I've never had one answer back," Crin says in wonder. He watches the proceedings for a moment, then suddenly his eyes widen as something crosses his mind. "Oooh! Ask Gamin if he knows why Kalkamedes decided to stop being a paladin."

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

If Sheila Heidmarch is still in the room, Crin indicates the sketch and asks if it looks familiar at all. "Does this look familiar at all? It looks like it could be important. Not to mention looking a bit ominous."

He also tentatively reaches out to touch the speaking blade.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin looks up at the others. "Any of you know Kalkamedes personally? I only know a bit about him, but have never spoken to him." He relates what he remembers about the man to rest of the group, and looks to Sheila Heidmarch for confirmation. "From what I heard, Kalkamedes was once a paladin, a defender of the meek. He abandoned the faith later, so they say, and after that he developed an interest in the runelords. Also those heroes who tried to stand up to the runelords. I think he must have come here to study that a bit more."

A sudden thought strikes him, and reaches up to try to touch Kalkamedes' chest. "Anyone see anything that might look like a holy symbol? I find it curious, if he was a paladin, did he abandon his faith completely, or did he just have a change of career choice?"

Perception check to look for any holy symbols or texts, primarily on his person (if he allows me to look)
Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Before starting play, made a couple last-minute changes to Crin's spell roster. Swapped mage hand for detect magic, and burning hands for magic missile. Thought both were more in keeping with how I see this guy developing.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Crin is excited by this mission, hardly able to contain himself as he considers all the possibilities. "Wow! Is there any type of magic involved? Sounds like it could be some sort of enchantment. What kind of guy is Kalkamedes? What was his last mission? Perhaps there could be a link. Did it have anything to do with the north? Or are there any obstacles that you know of that we should watch out for if we let him go?" Crin takes a deep breath, trying to focus on just one thing at a time, but his mind is racing. As he speaks, he casts detect magic and tilts up to examine Kalkamedes, looking for any magical signatures and trying to tease out any that might belong to magical possessions of his so that he can see what is left. Cast detect magic. Use either Knowledge (arcana) or Spellcraft to tell if there are any magical effects out of the ordinary that might be acting on him.

Spellcraft 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Know (arcana) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Woohoo! Good rolls to start with, now I know all my attack rolls will be 1's. ;)

Crin, or Crintalabbarok Frothelthimble, as he introduces himself, is also a bit nervous. This is mostly due to the other gnome in the room, Cyrinda. After so long in the lands of the talls and not seeing any gnomes at all recently, here he is adventuring with one! Not to mention that she looks quite alluring, and tall. And is in to magic! So Crin tries his best to act professional, in order to impress. He hopes she doesn't notice how short he is, barely three feet tall, and slight and pixie-like.

GM, as Pathfinders would we know Kalkamedes by reputation? Where he comes from, his interests, or recent activities? Would that be a Knowledge (local) roll?

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

I second Strat, the investigator class sounds intriguing and it might provide some skills that could be useful for this particular adventure (based on the description we were given). But, play whichever you think would be fun. :)

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Hi, I'm Nick, for this module I'll be playing Crintalabbarok Frothelthimble, or Crin to his friends. Crin is a gnome sorcerer wight the fey bloodline, so I'll be playing up his gnomish mischief ness. Looking forward to playing Crin, has been a backup character for a while, took part in a recent PBP module but we didn't get past the first combat before the game folded.

Crin is short, even for a gnome, and always tries to use his size to his advantage. For spells I plan to focus on compulsion spells, mobility, and combat magic. Also I can try to coordinate spell tactics with Cyrinda.

Crin's talents center around knowledge skills (nature and arcana) and Spellcraft. His interests include alchemical items, helping fellow gnomes, information about the First World. Oh, and extreme sports.

I live in this UK, so my posting pattern might be a bit off everyone else's. If you feel you need to NPC Crin to keep the game moving go for it, but I'll try to post as regularly as possible. Looking forward to this!

Liberty's Edge

Great! When do we start?

Liberty's Edge

Wow, this looks like an interesting potential cast of characters. Just looking at a summary so far:

Strat Spineshank - lvl 3 half-orc cleric (Sarenrae)
GM Tektite - ??
Shayla Amye - lvl 1 elf ranger
Cyrinda Wix - lvl 1 gnome sorcerer
Rhanloi - lvl 1 elf wizard (evoker)
Crin Frothelthimble - lvl 1 gnome sorcerer

Whatever the party make-up, certainly would have plenty of magical firepower! :)

P33J wrote:

Crin, it would really depend on the speed your fellow players want to go. I'm certainly not going to dismiss you outright for being a bit on the slower side, because if your consistent in every few days, you'll ensure we keep moving when things get bogged down (as they sometimes do in a PBP).

So lets play it by ear until we have a full party and I'll let them decide.

PJ

Sounds good! I'm interested to see who else turns up at the table!

Liberty's Edge

Hi, I'd really love to join a group for PbP Game Day, and this scenario sounds intriguing. I'd like to submit Crin Frothelthimble, a first level gnome sorcerer. First time trying this PFS character out, but if the rest of the party is a higher level I could swap and play Crar, a 2nd level half-elf eagle shaman.

GM P33J, how often would you want us to post? Realistically, I think I can only manage to post every couple days, though I aim for checking posts daily. I can understand that might disqualify me, if you are wanting to run the game a bit faster.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

John, are you out there? Any chance of resurrecting this game? It sounded so promising, and we were just getting into the groove of our first combat.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Thanks for NPCing me, GM, and sorry everyone for being incommunicado last week. Had a few things on that prevented me from getting on to the computer.

Crin hovers at the edge of the battle, jumping up and down as he tries to see how best to help. Finally he utters some mystic words and directs his arcane energies at Hildr, trying to break her concentration. He sees that she must be this Skell's friend, but her actions show that she's no friend of the group. And besides, she's looking a bit the worse for wear after the gnome's earlier spells. "Focus your attacks on the woman! We can bring her down!"

Cast Daze at Hildr (or Skell if she's gone down). DC 13 Will save or she can take no actions for the next round.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Sorry to lose you Talwin, I can understand though it gets difficult to keep track of several games. Hopefully we can game again in future.

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

No worries - it's all part of the fun!

Liberty's Edge

Male Gnome Sorcerer/1

Uh oh, ok. I'll just hope that Skell swings high.

Liberty's Edge

Crin moves forward slowly to keep near Max. When Max signals the attack against the other two warriors, Crin runs forward and flings his hands out at Hildar. A cone of hot flame bursts from his palms, hungrily eating at the cold air.

Will move forward until 15ft away from Hildar and cast burning hands, if possible also catching the other warrior in the 15ft cone. Anyone hit takes 3 points of fire damage, or half if they make a DC 14 Reflex save.
