About Charles Otharan

How I roleplay?:
For any of my characters my main focus is the party and trying to keep things fun. I don't try to take whatever treasures are encountered, especially if an item could benefit the party more with someone else using it/them. I do my best to avoid mixing player knowledge with character knowledge.... But, I am human and do make mistakes. As such, if/when I make a mistake, tell me. OOC or PM. And be blunt, I don't always get hints. Thank you.

Charles Otheran:

Character Name: Charles Otharan
Character Race: Human
Alignment: Neutral Good
Deity: Chadali

Current Moderator: DM Ray
Adventure: The Search for Aroden

Personality:
Charles likes to think that people are good, until he learns otherwise. Freedom and safety are very important to him. While he understands that not everyone feels the same, he will not accept that anyone he works with would consider slavery as 'OK'. The last thing that his mother told him before she sacrificed herself to save him and the people of the village was, "Sometimes the brave need to survive." He never forgets and won't needlessly risk his life.

Character History:

I'll start my history with my parents. Mariamna and Ronald Otharan were from Marian Leigh in Southern Ustalav. Mariamna was a small woman, quite beautiful, and a Celestial Bloodline sorceress. Ronald started an adventuring career as an Eldritch Guardian, but the familiar that he gained convinced him to learn magic. As he was quite intelligent, he sought out a wizard to teach him the basics and help him scribe a spell book. Along with an elvish rogue and a half-elf druid they roamed the area earning some notoriety and a bit of gold. During their adventuring days, Ronald and Mariamna became a couple. Ronald swore that Mariamna charmed him, but she swore that she never used magic on him. If pressed, he would admit that her charms had nothing to do with her magic.

When Mariamna found that she was with child, they decided to retire, temporarily, from adventuring. They settled in Courtland, buying a small house about three months before I was born. My birth was uneventful even though I was slightly larger than an average baby and Mariamna was so small. They added a shop front to the house and started selling oddities that they had saved from adventuring. Their connections with active adventurers helped keep the store stocked, and Ronald occasionally travelled with the old team to the small towns locally and as far north as Lepidstahd. It was on one of these trips that the Devil in Gray attacked.

I was eight years old when the Devil attacked. My magical talent has just surfaced but I wasn't even able to reliably cast a cantrip. Mariamna tried to help me, but somehow my bloodline didn't match hers. I also didn't learn by studying any of Ronald's old books, although it seemed strange that I could puzzle out some of his notations. Anyway, when it attacked the town it easily ripped through many of the defenders. Regular arrows and even swords and spears seemed to simple bounce off of it. One old man with an ancient sword, family heirloom that he loved to talk about, did cut deeply into the Devil. But then the monster gutted him and threw his sword far behind him. A couple other retired adventurers tried the same and were also quickly torn to pieces. Mariamna hid me in the house and told me to stay quiet. "Sometimes the brave need to survive." she told me, as she left the home to join the battle.

She tried to stay behind barriers as she hurled spell after spell at the Devil, keeping hidden long enough to burn it severely and puncture its hide with magic missiles. When it finally spotted her she was down to her rays of Heavenly fire. While they did hit and harm the creature it wasn't enough. She was the final victim of the day. Perhaps the thing was struck by her beauty, or it was just tired. While the other victims were practically torn apart, she only suffered a thrust of the Devil's claws into her heart. Regardless, she was dead before anyone could get to her. Ronald returned home to a town in mourning the next day.

Ronald was a good father, but without Mariamna he was a morose man. He continued the shop and did his best to raise me. Together we were able to figure out that my bloodline was a combination of Mariamna's and his. My ability to cast spells was based on my intellect and understanding of magic, not just willpower like her bloodline. I couldn't 'learn spells' from a spell book like a wizard, committing them to memory until they were cast. But reading a spell book did help me to understand how a spell worked and how I could cast it.

When I reached adulthood we hired a friend to run the shop and I traveled around the country with him and his old friends. Many of them had tales to tell about my mother. I was fairly certain that several of them had been a bit jealous of Ronald, thinking that they might have had a chance with Mariamna. Well, that's history....

I don't follow any of the 'standard' deities of the lands. In my travels I met with a warpriest of a strange deity called Chadali. Chadali is an empyreal lady, originally an Azata, that gained a spark of divinity making her a demigod. While I don't pray for my power, it seemed to make sense to occasionally thank a Goddess of luck and safety when things were going right for me. At least, it couldn't hurt, right?
