Spoiler:

Could this be a trap? Carlos thinks. But why? If the authorities know about the chalk mark, why not just arrest me? Whoever left the mark...do they know I've been in the jungle for weeks? I better go to El Bergantín Viejo before going home.

He returns the bronze box underneath the roots. He repeats the message to himself multiple times and tucks the note into his boot, to be disposed of later. Stretching, as if finished tying his laces, he proceeds through the streets towards El Bergantín Viejo looking for anyone taking a strong interest in him.

...And how will I gain access to the lowest room? he wonders.

Spoiler:
"Fountain of Youth? That is nonsense. A fantasy! But if there is a city of Silver, why not a city of Gold?"

Carlos moves his hand like he is brushing away a fly. "Let the British come! We will defend what we have and take what we are owed."

"If El Dorado were easy to find it would have been found centuries ago," Carlos Montoya replies to Don Enrique. They and Don Enrique's servants are returning to Buenaventura after a fruitless five weeks in the jungle. They push leaves and branches from the overgrown path that are attempting to keep them in the jungle.

"I made no promises of finding anything," Carlos says. He wipes the sweat from his face with an old hankerchief, one that had belonged to his father. "I am disappointed too. I've been searching for years."
