Background: Carlos Montoya is a minor aristocrat. The wealth his family had two generations ago is gone. His estate's buildings are dilapidated. One can live in them if willing to tolerate leaky roofs, tendrils of wind through broken windows, or rotting floorboards.
He harbors a resentment towards the Spanish crown for an injury to his family around 300 years ago. His ancestor sailed with Columbus' fourth voyage. He was promised vast tracts of land that were never given. He views the calls for freedom as a means to increase his wealth.
Most of his livelihood is made by leading expeditions to find the lost city of gold, El Dorado. This explains his poverty.
