Guys, I think I'm out of this. I'm not enjoying it, and find it too deadly to be fun. I also have taken on other resposibilities so that I need to be careful with my time. I hope the rest of you have fun.

GM, can you please remove me?

Is this particular book really lethal, or are we just rolling poorly? I'll admit that I'm not having fun, mostly because I just keep expecting someone else to die...

Carianna walks forward and tries to smack the scary doll with her sword, holding it with both hands.

attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Before combat I had noted that I had moved to about halfway between the group and the hut, so I moved myself there before I started this turn.

Carianna moves over to the hut.
double move

Carianna moves forward part of the way as Fin enters the hut, so that she can aid him if he runs into trouble.

Carianna prays for Fin as she watches him approach the hut.

Carianna looks at the others. "Does anyone have any idea what that could be?"

Carianna closes her eyes for a moment as the others argue, clearing away her fear and asking strength to go on. As the others prepare to move on, so does she, keeping her sword in her hand and following after whoever leads.

Level up transferred to online.

I've done the level up on paper, I just have to update the character profile, so please don't hold up the game waiting for me.

Carianna sighs as the second tree monster falls. She was sure that this new group to protect would also have fallen. She whispers a few words of prayer of thanks under her breath, gripping her holy symbol. Then she turns to her new companions and checks if anyone is injured.

Carianna sees the enemy near her fall, and moves over slightly to be close to the remaining enemy. Then she holds her sword in both hands and swings it.

attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Yikes, this is the first time I've had a character die and made a new character to continue. I think I like Carianna better than Alexia, but I'm still finding it really hard to get back into this adventure. Any suggestions, or experiences from others who have struggled with the same situation?

Carianna steps forward to attack the tree with bluish leaves. Then she swings her longsword at it.

attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Yeah, Carianna is build to be a secondary tank and healer, but by trying to do two things, she's only reasonably good at either. I agree that having her in the middle rank is good in terms of channeling. She doesn't have many channels because of low CHA, but they may avoid a TPK when everyone starts to go down again.

Do we need Quasit in the first row for trap spotting? I'm fine with either suggested lineup.

Carianna explains her conclusions to the others, and points out the injuries to Fin.

Carianna smiles at Quasit's enthusiastic curiosity. "I can't describe any trick with a wand, either. In my training, they showed us that in order to use a wand, it's the same process as casting a spell, you just mention the wand in your prayer. And the wand often has a specific word you must use at the end of your prayer. They did tell us that some people who can't cast spells can still use a wand with enough training."

Carianna looks carefully at the body to see what she can determine about it.

heal, untrained: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

Carianna smiles at Ibona, sensing a possible friend. "Are you doing OK healing our companions? My healing abilities are limited to a few times a day, so I don't want to use up all of them, but I can help if you need me."

Carianna lifts her holy symbol and prays. The others all feel a wave of warm energy wash over them. Those who are injured feel comforted, as they are partly healed.

channel to heal: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Mostly doing this to stabilize right away, rather than going to one person at a time as they keep taking damage from not stabilizing.

I think Quasit and Sakitu are down, but not Bulvi. I'll channel to heal next turn, which will hopefully get them back up, and if not will stabilize.

Carianna sees the undead, and her stomach turns over. She remembers the lessons she learned, but has never had to use and lifts her holy symbol. A wave of positive energy rolls out from her as she prays, damaging the undead abominations around her.

damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 DC 11 will save for half, undead do not get to add channel resistance to save

"Thank the Inheritor. Kelvah's greatest nightmare was being made undead. And thinking of his face changed, I just can't bear that, after all the times I stared into his face as we shared our hopes and dreams."

Carianna then turns her face away for a few moments. Anyone who watches her closely sees her shoulders shaking in carefully supressed sobs.

If he was present, it would have been at the carriage ambush site.

Carianna takes a tiny locket out from under her armor around her neck. She opens it and shows it to Bulvi, who she is talking to, as well as any others who are curious. "This is Kelvah. Did you see him yesterday, either as a dead body or... as one of the undead you fought? She said that she saw him struck down during the ambush where she was taken captive."

Carianna nods at Bulvi's comment, tears obvious in the corners of her eyes. "One of the others with the same mission was Kelvah. He was a paladin who was in the same group of trainees. We wanted to be married, but were strongly 'encouraged' to wait until after our first mission. And now, he's gone. And I don't even understand why."

"It was my graduation assignment from temple."

"Doing the right thing isn't always easy, or safe, or even successful. It is still necessary."

Carrianna looks at Bulvi. "I would like to join you. I lost friends, I failed people I was responsible for protecting. I want to make that right, the best I can. My sword and my magic are both at your disposal if you will have me."

Carianna's somewhat stern face softens at Quasit's approach. "You remind me a great deal of my baby sister. She's always getting into mischief, and no one can every be angry with her about it."

Carianna approaches the group hesitantly. She is still not sure if she is welcome to accompany them. She looks around, hoping to see a friendly face, afraid she will instead see hostility or blame. If I had done my job, they would never have had to come to the rescue, and two of their friends would still be alive. If I had done my job, my friends would still be alive, too...

Yeah, that was the best kind of argument I could come up with; I wondered if there was something more specific in one of the player companions I don't have. I guess I'm spoiled because most of my divine casters follow Sarenrae, who clearly does have a meaningful time of day.

The rules say that clerics prepare spells at a time of day meaningful to their deity. Can anyone think of a reason for a particular time of day to be meaningful to Iomedea?

Carianna makes sure her former employer is safe, and then spends the evening in the temple. She mourns for all her dead comrades, and even more for those who are worse than dead. She confirms her conclusion that she must investigate further. Those who rescued her from her bonds appear to be the best way to do so, so she makes a commitment in her own heart to stand by and protect these people to the best of her ability, even at the cost of her own life. Great One, bless my promise here. Give me strength to protect these new companions, and wisdom how to guide them in paths of goodness.

After her prayers, she makes sure her gear is all ready for travel the next day, and then sleeps soundly until morning.

Carianna stands and bows formally to Lady Argentea. "My Lady, I will see you safely back to town, in fulfillment of my promises to you. Then I must leave you to see that no one else will be harmed by these villains, if these good people will have my help. I also need to make the death of so many of my friends count for something."

"Yuln? He survived? He was part of the group who guarded Lade Argentea while some of us scouted. The zombies attacked us, I don't know who attacked her.

"We were attacked by zombies. I saw so many go down under their attacks, so many friends sent to Pharasma's judgement... And then I was here, looking up at you. And now I shudder to think what may have become of those friends, even who they might have hurt."

The woman who was unconscious when you found her blinks and stirs. At first, her eyes are full of fear, but then she realizes that you don't look like her captors. "Hmmm, who are you? Where am I? Is Lady Argentea alright?"

OK. Let me know when I can do something, I don't know if I've yet been healed enough to be conscious.

GM, is there anything I should know about how I got there, tied up?

I'm not sure about the heavy armor proficiency. After I put as much as needed into other stats, that's what was left. I wasn't even sure whether to raise dex or con above 10. str and wis are the characters most important stats, and cha had to be 13+ to qualify for selective channeling. In terms of a shield, I don't have the cash, and I've never put one on any of my characters.

In looking over the traits, I wasn't finding much that fit with the character and was more beneficial. Any suggestions?

Probably a good idea, considering how lethal this is...

Here's the new character. The mechanics are done, I'm still working on her background. She's built to be reasonably good at melee, spells, and channeling, including selective channeling to hopefully save us next time most of us start to go down.
