Background: The Vanderhaven family are the best ship-builders in Riddleport, and when Lady Vanderhaven was with child, they were thrilled. Unfortunately, it turns out that Lord Vanderhaven wasn't the father. The father was the elven gardener. This didn't exactly endear him to young Geoff.
Anyway, Geoff wanted nothing more than to be the captain of his own vessel. Eventually, he got into an argument with Lord Vanderhaven. Geoff swore he would one day become a captain and make him proud, Lord Vanderhaven swore that Geoff would never set foot on a boat as long as he lived. Geoff swore that he would be a captain no matter what he or anyone else said and punched Lord Vanderhaven in the face. Stealing a sword and chain shirt, Geoff fled into the night.
