Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Just to keep things flowing slightly... pretend I'm Ragnarr. I don't know his stats, but I'll assume he attacks at about +6 for 1d12+6?
Attack 13, damage (if needed) 18. Hopefully that'll put paid to this scumbag.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

I may have to brush up on my Pathfinder rules... I haven't read them since the last Alpha release, I think.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

No, I'm OK with that, but a little confused with the initiative order. Are you able to re-post that occasionally, just to remind us?

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Sorry Brendan, I've been offline for a few days. Thanks for covering my action this round.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Adamantium and cold iron? Very nice. Fey and iron golems, look out! (Just don't run away, 'cause I won't be able to catch you...)

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

OK, after some research, I was thinking... "Hraustiglr", meaning 'Dauntless' in Old Norse, apparently. I like to personalize it, and I like the idea of a blade that's not afraid to hit hard things.

That said.. what's it count as- adamantium? (Hmm... Improved Sunder)

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Uh, just for the purposes of fixing up my character sheet- what are the stats for my sword? I'm thinking of naming it... any suggestions?

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

At my wedding, one of my cousin's children came dressed as Batman, wearing a Zorro sword. He was 4, but I still turned to my wife and said "I told you we should have had costumes!".

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

I'm a little more inclined to the story-based way we've been doing it, but I figured you were just keeping track of our experience points until they meant something. Either way, I think it's been going reasonably fluidly, happening 'off-camera' so to speak after we bunk down for the night or finish a quest... so it's not feeling forced or artificial.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Well, I'm Australian, so all we have today is "National Public School Day"... yay. Plus, I don't drink, so I'm out, I can't even celebrate in an honourary way. :(

Tell you wait, I'll raise a cup of Mountain Dew for you Yankees. (And the Canadians)

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Hey Brendan, read the article... very nice. I did notice the small mention of the necromantic stuff, but I think it works well within the context. Overall, I liked the article (I personally would have liked some mechanics, maybe even just for the necro-stone?) and it makes for some interesting adventure hooks.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Absolutely, I'd love to.
Please, email it over to me.

True, and I think Ragnarr is taking that statement and running for a few miles with it. In his own, rather charming, way. Sort of like a dog that pees on your best carpet.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Hey, I'm not complaining. The more the merrier... indeed, I'd look pretty silly pontificating away on my own. Vlad's a big team player... he just likes being the face of the team. When it comes down to it, Kveldulf and Ragnarr are much better warriors... we all have our own strengths, and I'm having a lot of fun, just let me know if I'm overshadowing you a little. I have no problems backing off.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

I hope I'm not going to get in trouble for killing Egil... but would we have been able to save him?
I'm feeling bad now, but I have a feeling if he survived, he'd be a) horribly scarred, b) bitter about a), c) not our friend any more, and d) possibly still possessed.
Any of these could cause us problems, but I'm still worried.
Damn LG alignment! I guess call it survivor's guilt.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Eh, that's fine... not having any way of hurting them is why incorporeal critters are so damn nasty. I think one of my favourite Conan stories has Conan tossing his broadsword aside in order to hit a demon with a silver candelabra, reasoning that "silver and fire can harm it where steel fails". I'm having fun (just not paying enough attention!).

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Just to confirm, these shadows are incorporeal, yes? As in, nonmagical weapons... kaput?

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

I'm having fun... I worry a bit about forgetting people and events (when making a post I generally keep about 5 tabs open- one on the current post, one on my character stats, one on previous pages of posts, one on Invisible Castle, and the last on the actual new post), but I'm loving the feel of the game.

I do worry a bit, though, that I'm overshadowing everyone else. If that happens, just beat me down a little, hey? If I start monologuing on, just have action interrupt me.

My wife was just reading through one of her LiveJournal games, and came across this, which someone had posted as a link to a funny site.

Now, we did actually (skim) read through this, and it is definitely worth having a laugh at. It's like someone put a purple prose fantasy story in the blender with a 2nd edition DMG and some pictures of jewellery... definitely worth reading for entertainment value.

A+++ Funniest item on eBay!!![/stupid eBay feedback]

My session last night made me think of this question:

Have you ever had a dragon use a weapon?

I don't think dragons are naturally proficient with weapons, but with the whopping BAB served up to most dragons, it stands to reason that they'd figure out a weapon like a spear (duh, pointy end this way?) and be able to use it.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Pleased to meet you, NecroticBanana (only on the internet do you ever get to utter those words together...)

Pleased we'll be gaining some company, hope you have fun with us.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

I certainly think it's fair to allow him to drag me to safety... but then I'm biased (and bitten). :D

I'm having a lot of fun, I didn't realise we'd been at this so long, but I'm still enjoying it. I think that Vlad would like to do something about the political structure (if that's possible) but he's willing to take his time about it- after all, challenging the 'finest swordsman in the land', Sihtric, is certainly not something he'd survive if he can't take a Worg, alone or with friends.

Still, having a boat would be cool. We could travel to the far lands, maybe even go to Thule, and perhaps gain allies in the battle to liberate our fine kingdom from that pretender!

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Yeah, I'm running a PbP as well, and I went from 8 players to about 5, to 6, to 4, to 3, to 0, back to 3, now down to 2, then I emailed one player to ask if his character could do a cameo, and he's become one of the main players again. o_0.

Life can be tricky...

There was a Vampric Gibbering Mouther in one of the iconic 3e adventures, Heart of Nightfang Spire. It actually had a decent 'explanation', if such a thing is possible.

I was at Australia's CanCon this year, and came away with (I kid you not) 20 kilograms (or 44 pounds) of old 2nd edition books for around AUS$150. Most of these were in near-mint condition, having been read through once or twice, and most of the boxed sets had all of the pieces included (the dark Sun one, unfortunately, didn't have the cloth map).

I just wish I'd spent more there... I didn't want to "go crazy"... but I really should have just picked up the entire three or four piles (about a foot high each) and said "I'll take these".

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Yes, sorry, haven't checked the discussion thread since a bit before Xmas, when everyone went on holidays. I'm here, good to have you back.

(40 - 50 below is a bit of anti-fun)

Wow... we've just come off of a 14-day heatwave in the middle of summer. It got up to 48.C here (that's 118.4 in Fahrenheit, apparently!). We've had nearly 300 people killed in massive bushfires sweeping a couple of states, and floods in another. 40-50 below sounds kinda nice! :D

All warlock invocations are spell-like abilities, which means that they're about as powerful as an icecube in the City of Brass when the warlock is in an antimagic field. [/evil DM smile]

Hiya Paul, Luke, your good ol' DM from CanCon here. I had a quick look at your website... quite nice, I like the pictures, crosslinks, and sparkly text for spellcasting, especially.

If you're ever in the Southern Highlands of a Wednesday night, let me know- you'd be welcome at my gaming table any time.

Good luck for the last few weeks of the campaign, I hope it's all it can be.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

OK guys, at this point, shall we just call it quits? It's been dead three weeks without anyone posting... if anyone reads this and disagrees, let me know. Otherwise:

Thanks to the players who stuck it out. It wasn't always easy, but I appreciate the effort. Hellard, Brother Thomas, Riven, I have enjoyed playing with you guys, and will hopefully do so again some time. If you're ever in Australia, drop me a line, you would be welcome at my weekly gaming table.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Yeah, I'm having a good time. I am forgetting my reserve points, though... I'll have to try to remember those.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Cats your spells however is appropriate, I'm not too fussed about "what you have prepared". Personally, I'm a fan of the notion that (nonspecific deity) is going to look after you if you really need a lightning bolt from the sky or a purging of disease. Especially since you've spent the last umpteen years learning magic prayers, it seems appropriate.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Yeah, sounds OK to me.

I should probably post more often, I'm feeling a little guilty reading posts when I just don't have time to reply.

But I'll be here.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Guys? C'mon, you can stop hiding now...

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

All good- things are about to heat up again.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Oh, c'mon... no-one else?

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

So... votes for Hellard giving away all his worldly goods and possessions to needy orphans with one leg?

Aye.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Of the people I contacted (Lily, Breyr, and Hague), Lily has contacted me and let me know that (his player) is too busy to continue at the moment.

As such, the 'phantom' members of Hell Squad will be disappearing. I know that we've been busy (Snorter's gotten married, congratulations on that front; Rusty has been busy at work; I've just been lazy), but we will be plowing on. I have a big post coming, I'm just letting people settle in to the Watch Post for now... mysterious plots are afoot.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

No, I'd say 'Dad' is probably a prestige class (or maybe like d20 Modern's advanced classes- easier to get into, but harder to master).

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

By the way, the map for the Watch Post if right here on the wiki.

I do agree- being a paladin (or any good-type character) shouldn't be a cakewalk... but it shouldn't constantly be a drama, either (certainly not as a base class- for a prestige class, I'd call it even).

I guess perhaps my perception is that if there's going to be a 'walk in the door, you're a paladin' option (playing a paladin from 1st level) it shouldn't preclude you from doing the things your friends are doing. If my friends started working at Al Swearengen's Gem Saloon, I think I might have to find other friends... I just wouldn't be comfortable. And that shouldn't be the answer- put up or shut up.

I don't think that refusing to work for a man who a) imprisons devils; b) employs an evil, intelligent magic item; c) holds pit-fights at the back of the hall; d) has his waitresses dressed as succubi (this one, not to much, but at first glance, it might be a little off-putting); would be regarded as stuffy and inflexible- I think it would seem like a wise idea for the paladin to tell his friends "I don't like the look of this place- let's try the next tavern."

Just got my copy of Second Darkness, and while I liked some of it (especially the 'Deadwood' feel)... a few things popped up at me just from a quick reading.

1. Lavender Lil...

Spoiler:
In the Players' Guide, she's listed as a CN bard 6. In the section on Riddleport, she's now a NE bard, and she's lost a couple of levels (maybe Zincher introduced her to the Wight in the tunnels under the Gold Goblin and that got her an alignment makeover?).

I know this is just a small thing, but on an NPC who gets a 2-page spread in the Players' Guide, the PCs should sort of know what to expect.

2. Again... moral ambiguity. I don't want to go off on a crusade, but I'm tired of morally ambiguous heroes doing 'what needs to be done' to save the world.
Savage Tide WAAAY did it. Having the players be part-owners of a gambling hall, associating with crime lords, prostitutes, people who keep an imp in a cage and have a fighting pit out the back, who have an intelligent, evil magic item for entertainment... I'm really not interested in this kind of stuff. While I can recognize the plot twists and cool stuff involved (again, the 'Deadwood' feel)... I like that in a TV show where there's a definite good guy and definite (but maybe ambiguous) bad guys. It's not something that I want to roleplay.

It's the Book of Vile Darkness again (and let's please not re-open that festering old sore of an argument)... if someone wants vile (or morally ambiguous) content in the game, let them add it, don't make it a fixture.

Can they be given a nudge?

Yes, they have now been nudged. I let them know that if they wanted to continue playing, I had no problems, but if they wanted not to, that was OK too. Perhaps this will jog a few memories.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Yes to more riddles... no to ones I can't figure out! Heh heh heh.
Um, perhaps less cryptic riddles would be good, I think I've dead-ended on this one a couple of times. I'm just trusting Will and Boxhead to get me out of this one without turning me into rusalka-food.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Uh, did I not tell you about the odd 'disappearances' that happened last time this Watch Post was garrisoned?

No bodies were ever found.

Just blood.

About 6 litres per missing person... sprayed all over the walls, floor, ceiling...

OK, I'll let my reserve know. You might meet him 'in the morning'. If you make it that far. :)

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

At this point, it seems like we've lost Durendal (Breyr), Grimcleaver (Hague) and possibly Fatespinner (Lily/Pariah).

So far, the people still posting are Kirth Gersen (Hellard), Rusty Ironpants (Darius), Azoun the Sage (Riven) and Snorter (Brother Thomas).

Does anyone disagree with this?

That said, I have another player who has expressed interest and has been waiting 'in reserve' since the beginning... would anyone mind another character joining (their character concept is a currently serving Guard, so he might be seconded to your unit as a 'professional advisor' or something).

If anyone has any problems with someone else joining, please let me know...

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

On the other hand, Brother Thomas has been a bastion of calmness and authority in your absence, and has agreed with all the important NPCs at the right times.

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

I must admit, I'm a little lost with the riddle. I can't quite figure where it's headed... I'm usually good at these. A nice change of pace, though!

Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2)

Do whatever rules you like... but tell the story.
