Hello. Hoping for some assistance. I received order 24243955 today. I was outside when it was delivered. We were enjoying a rare sunny Ohio day.

The mailer envelope had old dry water mark stains and was deformed.

When I opened the envelope, the books were wavy from exposure to water at some point on their journey to me. I was hoping to get replacements. I am happy to send pictures if needed.

I recently received this order. My copy of Pathfinder Adventure Path #107: Scourge of the Godclaw (Hell's Vengeance 5 of 6) contains a misprint. The text that should be printed on the spine is skewed toward the back cover. The volume number is not readable and a portion of the front cover overlaps onto the spine.

Can I get another copy of this volume? If so, I am in no hurry and it can be included with my next subscription order.

I've lived in Florida for most of my life. I have a very large book collection. Five bookcases and two closets packed with TSR's back catalog hog two rooms of my very climate controlled and dehumidified home. Dry and 77 degrees is the norm.

My wife and I are toying with moving north. Midwest or Pennsylvania.

If I finish a basement and build a library, am I inviting a host of mildew and water damage?

I've never lived in a home with a basement, so I don't know the difficulties associated with storing books in that environment.

I'll preface this with the statement that I am crazy about books and condition. Crazy.

Do any of you store your books in the basement? How has that affected them over the years? Do the books now smell like your grandmother?

Any recommendations?

I was checking out at FRP games and suddenly this shiny game flashed into the new releases and began hypnotizing me. Then I noticed the stocking levels were plummeting from "Very Good" to "Low Stock" so I hurriedly ordered it on a whim. Anyone know anything about this game?

Hello

Yesterday, I received order 1561144 and the box was mangled. All of the books packed toward the top of the box experienced varying degrees of damage.

I can live with most of the corner dings and bent edges but the back half of the Planet Stories Novel is twisted beyond repair and Dungeon issues 120, 121, 126, and 127 are torn and battered as well. Can I send back these items and get replacements?

I'm a sucker for kingdom building rules and from the table of contents posted in the rpg now preview, it looks like there are around 40 pages devoted to that subject. yes it is a long post....

So I've been reading the Midnight campaign setting and I believe I finally have a good idea for a campaign. So far I have rounded up two players and I will possibly have a third joining us. I wanted to run my idea past a few people. I have a few questions in mind....

Is it too railroady?
Is it too cliche?
Are the roleplaying opportunities developed well?

With that in mind consider one of my players is my brother who will be playing a human ranger. He is an experienced role player. My other friend will be playing a dwarven cleric. He has minimal role playing experience.

I have welded together a few tried and true campaign hooks to forge a Frankenstein like abomination....Here is the premise.

The campaign is going to start with the players captured, enslaved, on the way to the gallows. They are currently being carted to the local city to be put to the death...The slaver caravan is packed with other slaves including the remnants of a band of well known resistance fighters. A day out from the city, riders attack the caravan, desperately trying to free their trapped brethren. The PCs are freed but the fight goes terribly wrong. Reinforcements from the shadow ambush the rescue attempt from behind. It almost appears like they were waiting for the rescue operation to be sprung. The resistance fighters are wiped out and only a few slaves survive. The leader of the resistance fighters who wears an ornate mask covering his features is mortally wounded. He beseeches the player characters to contact the resistance movement and warn them that he believes they have a traitor in their midst.

I have a whole back story woven for the resistance movement but to make a long story short they all wear masks so as not to reveal their identities to each other in case the organization is infiltrated. The resistance movement consists of several fallen nobles, church leaders, and merchants who all live in the neighboring city. Haven't decided where yet.

He asks the human pc to assume his identity, gives them the location of the next meeting, and begs them to warn the others that something is afoot.

Now my back story on the leader is that he was the traitor. He was horribly scared by burns, tortured and turned to the shadow. He couldn't live with himself anymore and lead the suicide mission to rescue the slaves knowing he would be cut down. It was the only way he felt he could be redeemed. He also has betrayed several other long term plans and he hopes by sending the PCs to warn the resistance council his sins will be atoned for.

so this leaves several options.

the first factor I was going to throw into the mix is that when they make it into town a couple days later, there are rumors circulating that one of the lords, who was a puppet to the shadow legate in the area, is missing and presumed to have joined the resistance. There is reason to believe that his young and beautiful wife is going to be put to the death as show of force. Obviously this turns out to be the dead resistance leader's wife....

this will give the players some choices.... first...ignore the situation. second ....wait till the wife is captured and rescue her.... or contact the wife, explain the situation, and then assume the role of the husband, disguising himself in some manner. The husband was horribly burnt and scarred after all so maybe it could be done....

The players will go to the meeting and hopefully try to convince the others that something is wrong. I'm gonna play one guy as a war hawk who plans on leading another series of raids regardless. I'll have one who doesn't trust the PCs... and so on and so forth. "So you were the only survivor of the raid, I see? You and this lone dwarf that you've brought into our midst...." That sort of thing.

Then I was going to have the players be surreptitiously contacted by agents of the shadow looking to be fed more information..... give the players a chance to figure out whats going on. They'll either have to out right kill the contact or try to bluff their way through the situation.

I'm trying to think of ways to tie the dwarven player in.... he has never read any fantasy books so I was almost going to sneak in the whole "reclaim the dwarven fortress and use it as a base" device...

so that's the beginning.... what do you think?

So I am curious. I have been involved in rpgs since I was 12 back in 1990. I took a long hiatus away from gaming from 1996-2004. Even at 12-13 I purchased more rpg books than I could consume.

I'll spoilerize the background material. You don't really need to read it to answer my questions.

I mainly collected Tsr products. Lately I have been on a rampage. I am rapidly chomping through the missing holes in my collection. I set a goal, a scary very large goal. I wanted to own all of the 1st and 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons books. Well most of them. I don't much care for rule books. There will always be rule books around but good fluff is hard to find. My focus was getting all of the setting books especially the ones I was missing large chunks of.... planescape and greyhawk in specific. I am armed with a checklist. I started with around 300 d&d books. I don't have the numbers in front of me but I wanna say there are around 750 tsr era books and I own around 600 of them now.

I comb ebay daily and I have now developed this awful awful habit.

Whenever a book goes out of print and suddenly the prices skyrocket! surge! spike! I get extremely irritated. I didn't even collect Star Wars Saga but when I saw online sellers trying to get 100 dollars for Knights of the Old Republic I tracked one down at retail and purchased it. Its like a challenge. I found Ptolus for 93 dollars at a game store in Canada. Realms of the Ice Queen.... I found that in Florida for 25 bucks. I am still trying to find the Tome of Corruption for something reasonable. I ordered Cadwallon from France and the Hackmaster Coloring book from England. Oh and Temple of Existential Evil .... you are my evil quarry that I can never find. Then that starts the completionist wheels turning.... now I own all of the Star Wars saga books..... and I have about 19 WFRP books. Its an awful domino effect.

To my actual questions.... How much do most gamers actually collect? Do you keep your old books? How many lines of games do you follow?

I have tried to keep my new purchases to several gaming systems....

There is some yahoo trying to sell a copy of the Temple of Existential Evil for 19,999 on amazon. The copy according to the description has a hole through it. Wooo!

I have a whole conspiracy theory developed around the company any-book which sells on Amazon. They tend to have old rpg books labeled as like new or new that they are selling for five or ten times the retail. Who buys these books for these ridiculous prices?

I'll see something that sold new for 35 bucks.... an ebay store wants 75..... an amazon seller wants 100 and when it goes up for auction on ebay, I get it for 20 cause only one other person bids on it. Certainly there is something to be said for getting it right away but....

Wilderlands of high fantasy (the necromancer games version) is on amazon for 700 dollars. I saw it go for 60 dollars on an ebay auction last week. Why are things getting priced so outrageously? Are people actually buying these books for these prices? If they are not how are the sellers still in business?

Here is my dilemma.... I'm a long time 2e fan. I was briefly browsing through my Fantasy Flight Games' Midnight books when I was seized with inspiration. With a great idea for a campaign brewing in my head, I launched into my sales pitch to convince my brother and friends to join a game. I played it a while back using a loose 2e conversion but now my brother has been pushing for us to make the leap to a new edition. He says he is tired of 2e....blasphemy, I say! Some of the Midnight books were published under 3e and some 3.5, I believe. Problem is I've never read any of the 3.5 rule books. I own the 3.0 books only cause someone gave them to me and I've never cracked the covers.

So I've bought the Pathfinder Corebook and I am currently having a staring contest with it right now. I always have to work myself up to read rules...hate rules.

If I delve into the Pathfinder book and then attempt to use the Midnight books am I gonna notice the difference? Will problems arise? Will I understand the stat blocks or will I scratch my head wondering how the FFG designers crunched the numbers. Am I better off under taking a full conversion to another system to avoid any chance of confusion?

I recently rediscovered Earthdawn. I've managed to track down most of the 1st edition books on ebay. I started wrangling togther a few of the 2nd edition titles from Living Room Games and I just ordered the 3rd edition stuff put out through Mongoose.

That leaves one missing component...the classic stuff put out by Redbrick. I've only managed to track down a couple of the books online and I haven't decided whether its worth it to purchase them. Most seem like reprints of 1e books and the others seem like they might be re-released under the Mongoose umbrella. They are ungodly expensive as well. Especially since the couple I found are in England which doesn't help.

I'm a nutty completionist but the price of the redbrick classic books may finally undo my instincts. Are they worth it? Especially if you already have all the 1e books?

Alright first and foremost the disclaimers! I like 4e. I actually like 3.5, Pathfinder, 2e....never played 1e but I have the books. I think I'd probably enjoy 1e as well. I got everything covered.

My concern with 4e is not the ruleset but in how WOTC is supporting the campaign settings. The whole two books and an adventure format. So my question is how can 4E survive on its own? Because of the lack of setting fluff support do you find yourself plundering previous editions by necessity for world information?

I know the argument has come up that 4E is desgined to be less work for the DM but does it not require a tremendous amount of further world building? I know DDI provides some support but certainly not to the degree of the previous books that came out under different editions. Was there not a market for all of those setting flavor books? In my 3.5 library I have around 38 or 39 setting books between Forgotten Realms and Eberron. Were these books not selling? If they were selling and players were buying them, did the market cease to exist or are players porting in 2e books from ebay or adapting books from other game systems? Would this by default accidently drive people to other systems to lets say find a fully fleshed out city supplement....with no book on Sharn or Waterdeep would gamers find themselves buying an Earthdawn book where they wouldn't normally?

Just curious. I miss dungeons and dragons setting books. I miss the days of campaign overload during the reign of 2e.

and again....I like 4e. Otherwise I wouldn't be concerned. And yes I like 3.5.... but 2e is my favorite and for any die hard 1Ers.... I'll try it out soon. Don't leave nasty messages.

I'm firing up a Traveller campaign using Mongoose's rule system set in a sector of my own creation and I was wondering if anyone knew of a book dedicated to providing rules detailing player run organizations in a space opera setting. Something smacking of Birthright, Strongholds and Dynasties, or Dark Sun Dune Trader. I haven't checked out any of the Gurps' Traveller products so I don't know if there might be something available there. I don't mind what game it originated from as I am happy to adapt it as long as it has a sci-fi basis. Any ideas?

So, I've undertaken the horrid task of creating my own world as a setting for a new campaign. In the same vein as a player's guide, I'm attempting to craft a handout for my players disclosing some of the world's history. I've never considered myself much of a writer and this is the first bit of fiction I've penned in sometime. If your gm was attempting to introduce you to a world, would this interest you? Please keep in mind this is just a fragment and much more is to come...

One thousand years of unbroken peace conspired against the bulk of citizens toiling under the golden sun of Sylstorm. Prior to the bonds of serenity forged after the sprawling aftermath of the Corpse King’s dire invasion, the world tossed in a terrible time of tumult and chaos. Great nations warred and chained together mighty empires drenched in blood only to falter, collapsing into the dust of their own broken swords. Weary peasants struggled to raise their eyes, barely witnessing the passing of kings struck down by rivals and nations sundered. Warrior cultures dominated. Women swung blades alongside their men. Children sat astride horses, bows at the ready. Their accuracy was unquestioned. The world churned in a cauldron. Primal forests resounded with heathen battle cries. The gathered Elven host vied for control of the endless heartland, trailing the herds of bison sacred to their primitive religion. Storm wracked seas battered the stalwart coastal citadels of the Karhuul League as their sentries scanned the grey expanse for invaders from distant shores. In the frigid north, the barbarian hordes eked a brutal existence, raiding clan holds across the blasted steppes.
Waves of famine and drought, dislodged massive segments of population, sending horse cultures spilling into the myriad of free city-states rooted in the towering Myradon Mountains. A great wave of orcs and humans battered themselves against the ancient walls of those cities. Civilized islands of democracy and culture, many of these free cities fell to the advancing tide. Pyres fed with the corpses of thousands of citizens illuminated the skies. Rape, murder, and cannibalism reigned. Unending carnage swallowed thousands and gave birth to smoke, ash, and chaos. Drum beats echoed against the mountains. Drum beats sounded the march of the bloated, bloody legions. Drum beats drowned out the cries of widows and the orphaned. The world teetered perilously on the edge of a razor wire, a plump apple awaiting the finishing slice.
As the violence reached an unprecedented frenzy, a far greater threat emerged. Colossal stone portals, anchored into the bedrock of each continent, were long a source of scholarly musing. Carved from unknown quarries, composed of an impossibly strong stone, they silently watched generations pass. Dormant, sleeping giants, scholars deemed them harmless relics of an unknown elder race. Circular in shape, the portals dangled from massive chains moored soundly into alien frameworks. Runes etched deeply into their smooth surface glowed with a demonic blaze. Flickering between a fiery orange and the dark purple of churning seas, their bizarre illuminating light triggered numerous peoples to construct cities and temples within the cast of their unearthly glow. The debris of a staggering number of civilizations lined their bases. On the fringes of the Dust Empire, a shanty town of black market traders sprung up in an ashen valley clustered around the largest of these behemoths. Three hundred feet tall, it sported an opening two hundred feet in diameter. Screaming through this gaping maw armies emerged, lighting the world afire.
It began with the harmless whistle of the winter wind. Soft at first like the comforting murmur of a mother’s voice consoling a distraught babe, the noise surged swiftly. Gusts of ash laden air, poured through the bore of the portal. As the flow of tainted air amplified, the runes flickered and died. Darkness enveloped the valley. The hard case men inhabiting the ragged town below hastily sought shelter. Blasts of wind tore through alleyways. Those few brave or drunk enough to bear witness to the events that followed soon panicked. Some took their own lives. Others, paralyzed with fear, froze, eyes fixed on the horrors tasting the air of our world for the first time. A meager few stood and fought to the last.
Blue lights coursed along the inner ring of the portal. Caressing the surface of the stone for a flicker of moments, the lights then converged and with an ominous silence tore through the fabric of reality. A rift opened. An angry gash, the light pulsated with the rhythm of a dying heart, straining to pump. The rift spread, filling the entire diameter of the portal. On the other side, a world filled with a sickly green haze watched consumed with jealousy. Boiling forth, creatures, contorted and twisted, disgorged themselves from the newly formed hole in Sylstorm’s reality. This mass of abominations spewed mightily onto the valley floor. Uncontained, they descended into the shanty town ingesting all before them. This town had a reputation for breeding scarred, independent souls, quick with a blade. They plunged their swords within the bellies of the beasts ravaging their home. Black blood spattered the ashy ground. Blades rose again and again to hew the enemy until they were dull, choked with sinew and bone. Nonetheless the tested cut-throats fell as they lived, one by one. Their foes were legion. Feral swaths of beasts tore down the ramshackle buildings. The inhabitants were devoured in an orgy of devastation.
The Dust Empire succumbed within weeks. Her proud cities were laid to ruin. A great blight spread from the portal’s sustained festering fissure. Threatening the slew of parasitic states clinging to the edges of the Dust Empire’s mass, the otherworldly army poised itself for further conquest. Those beleaguered frontier territories marshaled their outnumbered forces. Fleeing refugees ignited stories depicting the horrors to come. Panic welled.
In glimpses of the few survivors’ tales, a profile of the enemy was gleaned. The enemy was undead, yet an intelligent green light burned in their hollow eye sockets. Foot soldiers comprised the bulk of the invading force. Encased in suits of dusky, bile stained black armor, they expertly wielded curved tulwars dripping with foul poisons. Strips of flesh remained, bonding dried chunks of muscle and withered tissue fast to yellowed bone. Leathery skin stretched taunt across body cavities, straining to hold in place corrupted, once vital, organs. A vile, oily, black fluid circulated lethargically through what masqueraded for their heart. Great undead beasts lumbered behind.

alright...I was browsing Wizards website looking at the product schedule for 2009 when I noticed a glaring little gem. Looks like the original five Dark Sun novels are being re-released next year. Now I'm certainly not up on the insider knowledge, and I apologize if this information has already been released, but doesn't the presence of those old Dark Sun novels on the schedule indicate that Dark Sun is probably gonna be the campaign of choice come 2010? No sense to drag out those old novels unless they're planning to 4eify Dark Sun, eh? Again.... I'm not really up on the rpg news scene but maybe someone could verify this for me...

Alright...I finally managed to reunite a fragment of my old college group and I plan on launching my own campaign set in Golarion. If you will indulge me I'd like to post my campaign premise here for review to get some feedback and some ideas on where to take the story arc. First let me preface this with some of the fundamentals of our play style. My players lean toward a magic light world and care little for game canon. No arguments over the direction that the River Sphinx in Osirion flows and what not here. We are not overly concerned with violating fluff as we are more concerned with creating our own story.

The main thread of the campaign involves the players, Sargavian nationalists, attempting to shore their nation against it's external enemies and return the former colony to some semblance of prosperity and peace. The story begins with the player characters returning home after a five year stint as political hostages in the Shackles. The party's fighter is the first son of what was once the preeminent trading family in Sargava. The rogue is the daughter of one of the major nobles who has a massive estate on the fringe of the colony. The wizard is the second son of another mercantile family and the last party member is a dwarven cleric who has served as the steward for the fighter's family. The first adventure will open with the player's sailing home, becoming ship wrecked, and will follow with me running my own bastardized version of River of Darkness. From there I will move into the key elements of the campaign.

First, someone in Cheliax, haven't decided who, has learned that Aroden's body....or perhaps pieces of his body....were secreted by paladins of his faith to Sargava. Second, by harnessing the latent energy in this relic, a certain amount of divinity can be achieved. Third, a focal point is needed to store the energy. This focal point is another relic (haven't quite decided what) that was parted out among the various Cheliaxian subject states as gifts of birthright. Cheliax will attempt to gather these relics through subterfuge, violence, and by spreading a blight on the crops over the nations of Andoran and Galt and then dangling the cure in front of them as negotiation leverage. Because Cheliax cannot strike at Sargava, the Cheliaxians have sent agents to inflame the Mwangi tribesman into acts of open war with the hope of pushing Sargava to the brink. One of the major houses of Sargava has fallen under Asmodeus' sway and will be agitating toward turning Sargava over to Cheliaxian regents to stem the erosion of civil authority.

The players will need to help turn the Mwangi invasion, counter the pro-cheliaxian agents within their country's government, and either stop the crop blight in the north, or use their families trading connections to supply Sargavan foodstuffs to their allies until the cause of the blight can be determined and countered. Later they will need to discover the location of Aroden's supposed corpse and eliminate a party sent by Cheliax to retrieve the item.

Another of the theme's I wanted to explore is a little more complex.

Early on I wanted the party's cleric to discover a shrine to some long lost god who takes favor on the party. This unwanted patron will provide boons and attempt to aid the party, however, I will slowly reveal that this god was an evil power in Golarion's past who's followers murdered each other into extinction. Years of being bereft of faithful has left the god time to ponder his ways and his reflections have changed him for the good. The god believes that by sponsoring the good aligned player characters he may be able to introduce himself as the new patron deity of Sargava. Unknown to the players, the awakening of this god will trigger a cult of secret paladins who were charged with halting the return of this once evil god's faith. The player characters will have to decipher why paladin's are condemning them as evil doers and harrowing their efforts.

And one last theme.... gunpowder....

The party's dwarven mentor hails from Dogun Hold in Alkenstar. In the River of Darkness adventure the players will stumble upon the ravaged remnants of a field expedition sent by Alkenstar to obtain a rare ingredient that effects the potency of gunpowder. In exchange for rescuing the captured alchemists from tribesmen bent on cannibalism, sacrifice, slavery....some heinous act.... the party leader wounded and dying imparts the secrets of this strain of gunpowder to the player characters. I haven't quite decided how yet..... but this form of gunpowder will have an incredible psychological effect on the Mwangi tribesmen and these tribesmen will believe that if they die by gunshots their souls will not pass onto whatever happy afterlife the Mwangi embrace. My players love owning their own businesses and I was going to use this an opportunity for the player characters to attempt to create enough gunpowder to help turn the Mwangi.....I'm going to reduce the damage it causes so it doesn't spread to the rest of the campaign. It's fluff value is what makes it so strong. Later in the campaign I was going to introduce a Mwangi witch doctor who convinces his warriors that they are untouchable....

so thats my basic long winded premise..... any ideas? I'm not sure on the mechanics of how to introduce a fledgling god attempting to wash away his evil past. I know my Aroden's corpse idea is a little far fetched. If anyone has a better catalyst I'm all ears. Any feedback and criticisms will be greatly appreciated....

I'm planning on starting a new campaign and my players tend toward getting involved in starting their own holdings may it be a trading company or attempting to carve out their own kingdom. Does anyone recommend any 3.5 or even 3.0 books that support this? From browsing around I've noticed...Cry Havoc.... Fields of Blood... Empire... Strongholds and Dynasties. Any body have any personal experience they can relate in respect to how these rules played out in campaigns? Most of these books look centered around domain building but I was also looking for something leaning toward the rules for running a merchant based game also. Something akin to Dune Trader for Dark Sun or if I remember correctly the Gazetteer for Darokin had rules for incomes earned through caravans. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
