Gwynn rises from his seat at the table. "If you don't mind my company, I'll tag along, as well...extra eyes, ears, and swordarms can't hurt, right?" He pauses as he fastens his dagger to his belt, "Although, on the subject of swordarms, I can leave behind the heavy equipment for now if subtlety and diplomacy are the watchwords of the moment. Too many armed strangers milling about the town and I fear we shall give ourselves away to our quarry."

Gwynn nods to the sheriff, "If you feel the need for extra swordarms in this matter, mine's not spoken for yet, either. I'm not able to bring forth witnesses to vouch for my skill or virtue, but I'll take any test of either you would feel necessary to put me to. If you want to question my motive, I'll try to be plain - I don't want to risk staying or fleeing if the region's still stalked by some unknown slayer, and I doubt the man who was put to untimely death in this place was guilty of something deserving that fate. Call it petty boredom if you like, but I'd prefer to help put down a dangerous criminal rather than walk away or hide."

Gwynn raises an eyebrow at Gargos's comment. "Commanding, eh? He frowns. "Rarely do I hear words such as those on my behalf, though I'll gladly shoulder the burden of command if none other are versed in the art to my satisfaction. He offers a handshake. "My name is Gwynn-" He stops with the next word on the tip of hos tongue. "Hmm...Gwynn will do. Apologies for the exclusion of the rest, but I assure you, it holds little in common with that which is current." He pauses for a few seconds, staring off into the distance, and then returns his gaze to Gargos. "I am not held to this situation by anything aside from personal interest in seeing justice done. However, if an extra swordarm is needed, I'll gladly volunteer, I admit, for as little as a few days' lodgings, though you'll never catch me turning down pay..."

That is strange,"Gwynn muses in response to Uldhazel and Irian, I must wonder, if magic is involved, might the assailant's unnecessary brutalty have been for some fell ritual purpose?" He stares off into the distance, pondering for another moment,"Or mayhap the magic brought forth some sort of ravenous beast with a grim hunger?" He scratches his head. "As for the girl and the shout, I was quartered down the hall and only heard the scream of the innkeeper's daughter, overwhelmed with horror at the grisly sight, I imagine." He spares a glance over his shoulder, to see if breakfast is being served in the common room. Returning to the conversation, he concludes "I am afraid to say, I spied little else of note, and feared rousing the proper lawman's ire by taking the case in my own hands. I am no inquisitor, sadly. I can see some of you are better trained in such arts than I. A single pair of eyes, even the lawman's, is unlikely to see everything. I hope he will listen to you when he has concluded his own inquest."

Gwynn spares an incredulous glance to the sheriff's back as he passes into the room where the grisly event took place. Then he looks at the other curious parties. I failed to spy anything amiss, yet I gather from the rest of you that little surrounding this event is ordinary nor simple. If it doesn't offend, I will join you in the common room as you make this story ever-clearer. With that, Gwynn turns to head downstairs.

Gwynn softly mutters "Aw...hell" as he catches a peek through the crowd at the grisly scene. After several more moments of uneasy silence, he starts, looking embarrassedly at the weapon he is holding rather prominently. Inching back through the crowd, Gwynn ducks back into his room to stow his weapon and shield, donning a proper tunic while he's at it. He re-emerges, furrowing his brow at Thorson's words. "I take it this isn't exactly a common event? No general troublemakers around who would be in this sort of vile business?" He stops for a moment to think, and then continues, "Come to think of it, was this last eve the poor fellow's first night here?" Spoiler: Gwynn's the paranoid sort who would always carry his dagger concealed somewhere on his person, but he's leaving the battle gear behind for now. The danger seems to certainly be no longer immediate.

Gwynn rubs the sleep from his eyes as he pulls the blankets aside and rolls off of the bed, sweeping up his sword from under the frame in one smooth motion. Crouching on the floor of his room, he squints until the blurry light of the morning coalesces into recognizable shapes, and then bounds down the stairs, stopping only to scoop up his shield and sling it across his arm. Spoiler: If it matters for timing, I'm guessing what I just described probably takes two rounds. First round, stand from prone, move to where my equipment is stashed. Second round, pick up and equip my shield, then move as far out of the room and down the stairs as I can. Since my armor would take too long to put on, I'll just do without for now, my AC drops to 14 (10 + 2 shield + 2 dex) |
