According to the Paizo schedule, it's being released in late april. Maybe it was pushed back further?

I know there's been a lot of delays due to myriad issues, including weather and the chinese holiday.

Thanks Cheapy, especially for the Paizo schedule link - I get a little lost on the paizo.com website.

I pre-ordered Skull & Shackles Part 1 awhile back thinking of an early March shipping date. However, this morning Amazon.com sent me an email stating that the release date has been pushed back and now the estimated delivery estimate is July 16-20, 2012!

What's going on? Sorry for the crosspost but I'm very disappointed if this is true.

Thanks.

Is there some sort of Easter egg in this book? I was browsing through it (at least I think it was this book, although I went through Volume 2: Lords of Chaos at about the same time) and there was a passing reference to an otherwise unmarked obelisk with an inscription something like "IHYSSEPW" which I assume expands into a phrase or sentence, along the lines of "IYWIMAITYD."
Okay, it was “I-H-Y-S-S-I-G-E.”

If you read Volume 1 closely you find that Ihys was Asmodeus' brother.

Salintar -

Thanks for the info...and I think some of you need to take a "chill pill". Relax - deep breath in, deep breath out, repeat x 5. :-)

Last night I noticed that the D&D / WotC site was down and it appears to be the same this morning. During my afternoon run yesterday, to blow off steam from writing grants, my buddy and I were talking about it. He plays in my campaign and is somewhat looking forward to 4e because of the streamlined skills, but other than that not much interest on his part. Now, he's 26 y/o....being 36 y/o myself and playing since '79...I can understand the hesitancy on his part (from his generation) and mine.

Salintar's "$" in a way is quite apropos considering that it will require lots of "$" down the road to build-up a 4e D&D library, if someone so chooses. Sadly, Dragon and Dungeon mags have come to there end and I haven't opened the past four issues of each...too sad. :-( I've invested a lot over the years, as I'm sure 99.9% of the people on the boards have too, from 1e to 2e to 3e to 3.5e and now to 4e? I'm not sure I will make the change, probably not. I'll buy the books for my young kids and nephews so they can start their library but my 13 y/o nephew was honestly in tears when he heard that Dungeon had been cancelled and this is right after he returned home from winning the county soccer tournament. He thought it was so cool when he started getting Dragon and Dungeon in the mail, but I transferred him over to Pathfinder and I hope he finds it fun too.

Well, off to a research seminar, but regardless I am looking forward to seeing how this all evolves. It will be interesting to read comments a year from now about all of these events.

Big D, Max,

To get the "Pathfinder Charter Subscriber" tag, you will need to create an ongoing, month-to-month subscription to Pathfinder before the first volume ships out in August. Which means, that you two will need to set up your subscription in addition to transitioning your remaining Dungeon and/or Dragon issues.

Eyebite,

You've got the "Charter" tag, so you are all set up. :)

Thanks,

Greetings!

I would like to jump on this bandwagon as well. My account does not show Pathfinder Charter Member, can you please take a look at it for me?

Also, a question regarding the Dragon/Dungeon subscriptions I gave my nephew. How do I transfer his subscription over as well to Charter Memberl? I want to make sure he does not lose any issues of Pathfinder. I am not sure if his name is in your database under my account or not...

Please advise and thank you for all of the help!

Great suggestions all around. My ultimate dilemma is that they are in Eberron, so the power needed for their "wants" is in question. The fight with the bullywugs caused a lot of damage to the manor and since one of the PCs is an estranged cousin to Lavinia, a good idea may indeed be the "gold piece sink" to help fix-up the place.

They certainly need to be lightened in the purse-strings, paying for the raise dead may certainly do the trick! They would have to trade in some magic items or two as well.

Tough call on this one to be sure. I know it's my game and all, but the group as a whole are fun to play with, one guy got a little sassy when I wouldn't agree right off the bat to the flaming sword idea, but he later apologized. I haven't run into this before.

Greetings!

I'm running the Savage Tide AP in Eberron and the group recently finished off the Bullywug Gambit with everyone reaching 6th level (yes, they took out Harliss Javell) and they are all loaded.

Here are my dilemmas which I hope someone can help me...

- A PC died in the Vanderboren Manor (6th level Kalashtar psionicist) and the group, and the player understandbly, want to bring him back. Considering that there are time limits on "Raise Dead" and "Resurrection" is an extremely high-level spell, does anyone have some good ideas on how to address this? There isn't anyone in Sasserine of high enough level to bring him back.

My first thought was to run the party over to "Expedition to Castle Ravenloft" with the gimmick that "...towards the West there is a man rumored to have conquered life and death..." I was also thinking that they could afford to lose a level or two, but maybe that's being too tough.

I have not yet read the third installment, "The Sea Wyvern's Wake" so maybe some of the problems could be solved there. I am afraid that I can't think of a 'realistic' way to get the PC back into the game nor a way to lighten the 'confidence' of the party by removing magic items and/or levels.

Another problem I am having with the group is that one PC in particular insists that Sasserine is a big enough town to go shopping for a flaming longsword +1. Now, I'm not fully abreast of all the rules, but considering that Sasserine is on the far eastern outskirts of Khorvaire and without any Dragonmarked Houses, what "rules" are in place to help a DM with what PCs can or cannot purchase in the town.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

DeadDMWalking -

Thank you!

I honestly have been deeply saddened by the discontinuation of Dragon and Dungeon magazines. My 12 y/o nephew, to whom I gave subscriptions last year, was in tears when he learned. Like many others on the lists expressing their discontent, sadness, anger, etc...I would like to contribute by letting Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro know my thoughts and disappointment.

Does anyone have the names and/or addresses of those individuals to whom I should write? Frankly, Scott Rouse's message was condescending and insulting asserting that the readers of Dragon and Dungeon want this information in an e-format. Did he or others ever think to ask? Like many others have said, I am sure that this message and letters to the individuals of importance will probably be deleted, trashed, or ignored....but I want to feel like I tried. If not for me, then for my nephew and my 10 y/o son and 8 y/o daughter who would always run them to me when I walked in the door after work. Such fond memories that will disappear..."like tears in the rain." An escape from the tediums and reality of work in academia, it's been hard to believe that this is really happening.

Please give me names and/or addresses (snail/email) of anyone of potential impact. As for me I do not know what I will do with Wizards or Hasbro when it comes to my wallet. I am mad but more out of despair and disappointment. My ultimate fear is that D&D will fold completely. I have cancelled my plans to attend Gen Con - it's anti-climatic now.

I miss the days of E. Gary Gygax, Bruce Arneson, etc. etc. I wish you had never left.

Thank you.

Darin

old-school gamer, since 1979 when I was 8 y/o.

I'd like to go out on a limb and suggest that the folks at Dragon look at a regular installment of Greyhawk based articles to parallel the Eberron and FR that they have now. Considering that the game was born (excluding Blackmoor), weaned, and reared in GH, I'm saddened by the lack of attention that GH gets. Now, before everyone says "are you crazy? it's the core world? you've got years of material already? blah blah blah" I'd like to point out the simple fact of how many 3.5e hard backs do you have on shelf with the Greyhawk logo on the top? Rough estimates: FR (10) Eberron (8) GH (0)....

Being an old school D&D guy for the past 27 years, I have (and will always have) a fond association with GH and I'd like to see it developed more than simply throwing Wee Jas, Vecna, Boccob, etc. into the PHB as the core deities. I'm sure the next retort is going to be that WotC can't cover all the game worlds (FR, Eberron, DL, RL, DS, etc. etc.) but hey! if the GH deities are going to be set as the core, then why don't you develop the world around them?

Just a pitch for my favorite and fondest gaming world although Eberron is pretty sweet.

Here's hopin'....

I just hope there's a decent amount of non-Mieville articles in the magazine. I don't mind an article or two on a best seller fantasy novel, but devoting a lot of pages contents to it isn't really enticing.

Got my issue today and you're going to be disappointed just like I was...quite a number of pages are devoted to it. I hope this isn't a recurring theme. In fact, the regular Eberron and FR (not a big fan but it's cool) are a great idea but I'd like to see a regular installment for GREYHAWK that seems to be forgotten about except for the core deities.

Of course, pbskids.org doesn't load fast either but I'm really not there too much on my own. :-

Eltanin wrote:

I've seen some similar pleas out there before, but nevertheless I wanted to ask one more time.

Based on some holiday gift cards etc., I am in a position to purchase a new D&D book or three. Currently I own the core rulebooks and DMG II. There are so many supplements out there, it's hard to wade through sometimes. So I'm looking for suggestions.

If you had to buy just one (or two) books, which would they be? I play as both DM and PC. Would you recommend different books for each facet? Are there books that you consider a must-have regardless of use by DM or player? Are supplement books a waste of money and I should buy something for my wife instead? Thanks for the thoughts. Happy 2007!

Hi Eltanin -

You've gotten great suggestions but I'd like to throw my few cents into the fray. What would I suggest???

For the DM:

#1 - EBERRON CAMPAIGN MANUAL.
Without a doubt I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everything I can get about Eberron. I started playing back in 1979 when I was 8 y/o so I've been around quite a while (my increasing waistline and the white hair my kids point out can attest to that) so I'm surprised by some of the answers you received from other people. I gauge the quality of books by how often I thumb through them. When I hit the sack, ~80% of the time I grab a D&D book off of my big bookcase to read next to the kids. Now granted nothing will compare to the insatiable reading I did when I first found the game. I can't say how many times I've read the 1e MM, DMG, MotP, etc. I loved 1e because it was new and exciting...the books on the whole were much better than they are now. 2e was terrible, absolutely terrible, so no comment. 3e/3.5e is new and exciting and Keith Baker's Eberron has raised the bar. The integration of magic into the campaign world, lightning rails, Xen'drik, warforged, the Houses, etc....it's awesome. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

(Note: The rest of the Eberron books I would rank as: Secrets of Xen'drik > Explorer's Handbook > Sharn: City of Towers > The Five Nations > Magic of Eberron > Faiths of Eberron > Races of Eberron).

(Note 2: I don't have Dragonmarked).

#2 - FIENDISH CODEX I: HORDES OF THE ABYSS

An excellent book covering all the nasty demons (I refust to use the idiotic terms of baatezu and tan'nari) in the Infinite Layers of the Abyss. There's enough material in there to keep your wheels spinning for a long time - I've been through it at least twice now. I'm hoping to pick up the FIENDISH CODEX II sometime in the future. Reminscent of the 1e MotP and significantly better than the Book of Vile Darkness which was a bit over the top IMHO.

#3 - EXPEDITION TO CASTLE RAVENLOFT

Wow, what a nice job! I can't wait to run this in my Savage Tide campaign...now I've just got to find a way to integrate it. The maps are gorgeous and the work put into it was top notch. Unfortunately, I never played the original I6 - Ravenloft by Hickman et al., but from what I hear it's lived up to expectations.

For the Player:

#1 - EBERRON CAMPAIGN MANUAL

Same reasons as those for the DM. A high-quality, top notch campaign setting that both players and DMs will thoroughly enjoy.

#2 - DRAGON MAGAZINE

Now, I put Dragon here instead of in the DM section for the simple reason of keeping players excited about the game. A DM probably doesn't need much encouragement to drop a few bucks on new books every now and then. I think Dragon would help players (and all D&D fans) passionate about the game and hopefully bring more to the gaming table than dice, chips, pencils, and a character sheet. I am not a big fan of the Class Acts section but I know a lot of readers write in on how much they do, so I respect that. The Demonicon of Iggwilv is so good, I wish there were installments in every issue.

#3 - SPELL COMPENDIUM

Magic is what makes D&D so fun and it's also what makes it so complicated. This book centralizes enough spells in one place to keep everyone happy for a long time. I like seminal references and this is certainly one of them.

(Note: I'm not a big fan of the Complete Series...too many books, too much money $30/book, and from what I've seen, not enough quality material to warrant such a purchase).

For your WIFE:

#1 - PERFUME / JEWELRY / PAJAMAS

Usually a safe bet is somewhere in that list, I tried all three this past Christmas and it works!

#2 - KILLER BUNNIES

A great game! My wife and kids LOVE playing it and knowing that it's hard (nay impossible) for her to play D&D with my regular group because of the small ones, it's a great way to spend quality time playing a game. To heck with Playstations, X-Boxes, and WIIs...face to face gaming is where it's at.

#3 - JAMES BOND 007

The 007 game put out by Victory games in the 80s is still one of THE BEST gaming systems ever designed. Hopefully, with the tremendous success of Casino Royale (the best Bond movie ever!!!) somehow, somewhere, someone will pick up the game and re-introduce it. It's a great game that allows players to...well....be a secret agent! Who hasn't seen a James Bond movie? A female James Bond (Jacqueline Bond?) campaign would be a lot of fun to do with your wife. If we can find the time, I know my wife would love it.

Happy New Year!

I think the bastard brother should be uncovered publicy and then the party suffers in diplomacy checks and gather info checks period...and let ech pc during the adventure a taste of what they are doing..if u steal be stolen from..lie and get lied to bad. Then do real alignment checks on everybody by announcing any character who dies has to have a relative or friend come to find out what happened to them. Lavinia will take care of herself..maybe weak now..but with her connections through the seekers she could become a powerful enemy in her own right.

Good suggestions! Boy, the wheels are turning now. Lavinia has turned to her "long lost cousin" as a source of support, but I could have the inquisitive (or the Lotus Dragons for that matter), publicly decry his guilt with the murders of Lavinia's parents. A public outcry would result and they wouldn't be as comfortable around town.

I guess that's the key thing right now that I'm trying to fix. The PCs are too comfortable. They have a Seeker-associated matron (Lavinia), cash, and a bit too much bravado.

James Jacobs wrote:

You should certainly play Lavinia as less of a victim and more of a strong-willed character. She shouldn't be a pushover, and if she starts to suspect that the PCs are robbing her, she'll confront them. Using diplomacy at first, but after that she'll probably cut them loose.

If you're still interested in running Savage Tide, things aren't lost. You should have Rowyn Kellani approach the PCs with a reverse job offer; work for the Lotus Dragons and help her gain control of Sasserine (and eventually, control of Farshore).

And yes... PCs who rob from their employers should definately drift toward Chaotic in alignment, and if they get worse, they might even start drifting toward evil. If there are lawful or good clerics or if there's paladins in the party... this might be enough in and of itself to get your PCs back on the path.

In closing, though, don't worry TOO much. The title of the adventure can just as easilly apply to the PCs. "There Is No Honor" is actually intended to put the PCs in situations where they'll have the chance to make moral decisions on what to do when they recover someone else's stolen treasure, and while Savage Tide assumes they take on the role of the good guys, each adventure will have a short "Switching Sides" sidebar that details how you should adjust the adventure if the PCs decide they'd rather be bandits and pirates themselves.

Hi James,

Thanks for the suggestions. Great ideas all around. The group is "good" aligned but a counter-offer by the Lotus Dragons (after learning of their behavior) would maybe show them that they aren't on the "straight and narrow". I need to stress alignments in Eberron by having them move to Chaotic alignments. The good aligned cleric could have a crisis when a spell is needed but the Sovereign Host isn't answering.

After running two sessions on There Is No Honor, I didn't realize that it is "actually intended to put the PCs in situations where they'll have the chance to make moral sions on what to do".

The party is all good-aligned but I must say that I was stunned when they decided not to give all the pp's back to Lavinia. Thanks again.

A question for y'all....

I'm running the STAP in Eberron with a "good" party that stormed the "Blue Nixie" and recovered the 100 pp bag from Soller Vark's cabin; however, upon returning to Lavinia they gave her back only 50 pp saying that was all they found. Not the most honorable of things to do, but I'd like to have it come back and haunt them.

I've been role-playing Lavinia as a scared, somewhat clueless NPC but after their actions I might switch her to seeing through the PCs but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions? An interesting coincidence is that the background for one of the PCs is that he's an estranged, "bastard" cousin of Lavinia and Vanthus who wasn't recognized by Lavinia until they entered the family vault. I've hinted that an inquisitor was hired to look into the murders of Lavinia's parents, so maybe I can build on that.

Thanks.

Big D!

An interesting note on "lich", the guys on the "Fear the Boot" podcast pronounced it as 'lick' although I'm one in the 'litch' camp. A bigger question is whether anyone's ever compiled a pronunciation guide for D&D, especially for Eberron and Greyhawk. It would be a worthy endeavor....

Hey!

Speaking of Vecna references, for the past while I've been searching in vain for a copy of "Vecna - Hand of the Revenant" by Ironhammer Graphics. Would anyone on the messageboards have a line on getting a copy?

Ever since reading my "Vecna Lives!" module ages ago (what a terrifying adventure that would be...it sure would be awesome to get a 3.5e conversion for this - HINT HINT), I became fascinated with the evil mage sitting on his Spider Throne.

Big D!

Hi James,

Thanks for the 411 on where the Eberron campaign begins. I apologize for not understanding the editing limitations at Dungeon...if you need any outsourcing, I'm there for you! All I'd need is to be able to stay in Madison, WI for my current gig, but my ultimate dream is publish in Nature, Science, Dragon, & Dungeon....hey, priorities right!?! :-)

I appreciate the fast responses on the board too. My group began "There Is No Honor" this past Saturday and it was a blast. Maybe I'll zip over to another thread and post what's happened. Briefly, one PC is a Vanderboren bastard, childhood friend of Lavinia and Vanthus who's been disowned and suspected of killing the Vanderboren parents. He was terribly upset that Lavinia didn't recognize him (although it's been years, but I rolled a "5" on a DC10 Recognize Distanced Family check). Lavinia has procured the services of a high-level Inquisitor to find out anything about the murder of her parents. It will give this PC something to worry about...(insert evil DM laugh here). They visited the "Blue Nixie", defeated Soller Vark (didn't put a guard on him so he escaped), and nearly had a TPK with the rhagodessa (3 out of 4 were down and out...I kept on pretending to miss the nearly dead halfling but it made for good entertainment).

Great start so far! I can't wait for future installments and our next game. Now if I could only convince my wife that every Saturday night would be a good thing....that's a DC40 Placation check and me with a negative Cha modifier from our last game running 90 min longer than expected.

Big D!

When (if ever) are we going to get the Eberron conversion notes for the ST? If Keith has already submitted his notes, then why can't they be posted with the conversion notes for the FR to follow?

Don't punish the Eberronites because of the slow FR response for the conversion!

Keep it real,

Big D!

Good morning,

I have a need for a 3.5e conversion of the GDQ1-7 supermodule. Has anyone seen one lurking out there?

My beef with the conversions is that they should be provided by WotC. How can you sell a new gaming system without providing those of us who have invested so much in the older 1e and 2e modules a conversion to the new system? The parallel I see is in video games (sadly) wherein older PlayStation 1 games can still be played on PlayStation 2.

Any thoughts out there?

Thanks.

You hit the nail on the head with Dungeon magazine, sometimes I get a little burned out on Dragon. I've just recently renewed my subscriptions to both and the new Dungeon I got yesterday was awesome! I can't wait to actually sit down and read through it page by page.

BTW, I wanted to drop you a line noticing that you are in the Madison, WI area. My family and I have recently moved here as well. In the next few weeks I will be starting up an Eberron or GH campaign and you're welcome to join!

I got my copy of the Dragon Compendium Vol 1 the other and after looking it over I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. Erik, I hope you are reading these posts to hear comments from your fan base.

When I heard of the "Dragon Compendium" I was expecting primarily material from classical issues from Dragon Magazine way back in the day and updated for the current 3.5e system. Instead, I get another huge list of races, feats, prestige classes, etc. that we get ALL THE TIME. I mean, do the editors (or whomever put this together) realize how many feats and prestige classes are already out there in the recent 3.5e literature. We have been bombarded with these, the sheer number is unbelievable. Someone in your design group should have compiled a current number of how many feats and presitge classes have been put out in Dragon Magazine, hard backs, website, etc. There must be dozens and dozens and dozens.

I was extremely discouraged with the number of articles pre-dating the 2000-2006 era. Most of these issues are easily available at the local library or by purchase on Paizo.com. The older issues, and in my opinion, the CLASSIC ISSUES were entirely under represented. The bias towards the newer articles was blatant and painfully obvious, and reading some of the posts a number of other members feel the same as I.

I feel robbed at purchasing this volume and it was a kick in the teeth for a player who's been playing D&D since 1979. What about the classic articles you read about all the time but you can never get your hands on: (i) discussions between Mordenkainen, Dalamar, and Elminster, (ii) details of Zagyg and the classic imprisonment of the nine demigods, (iii) the intricacies of the outer planes (Nine Hells, Abyss, Pandemonium, etc.), etc.

Where were all the historical articles? Where were all the classical characters reinstalled in the 3.5e system.

You totally lost me on this one and I'm not going to pre-order the next volume but rather wait this time and see how everyone feels about it. I apologize for the length of this diatribe, but I had to vent as it was brewing all night.

Sincerely yours,

I am disgruntled, disappointed, and frankly I feel cheated and betrayed... It was definitely not worth the money I paid!
